Next Gen Engines Supporting Next Gen Games

Let’s face it, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are beginning to look outdated and discussion of next-generation platforms is at hand. Nintendo revealed the Wii U at E3 2011 and expects to ship sometime later this year with the promise to support the “core” gamer. Rumors of the Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 have been reported on the web with speculation and interest beginning to reach fandom. While details about the technical aspects of the consoles have yet to be confirmed, gamers can get a taste of what is to come by viewing the tools designers use in next-generation game engines.

Frostbite 2
CryEngine 3
A4 Engine
Real Virtuality 4
X Ray Engine 2
Unreal Engine 4
The Madness Engine 2

Here's some footage of The Madness engine in real-time in some PRE-Alpha footage.

DeadlyFire4481d ago

CryEngine 4 will likely be around in 2013/2014 as well. :P

Other engines might appear as well. I like your list though. Madness is quite impressive.

JeffGUNZ4481d ago

Looks great minus the fire, that looks so fake.

gigreen4481d ago

I guess Gran Turismo 5 is already next gen because that's exactly what it looks like in the video.

TotalHitman4481d ago

Rockstar's RAGE engine is 6 years old, maybe they'll release a new engine after Max Payne 3 or GTA V.

Your going to see $400 systems with 500GB hard drives minimum, cloud storage, Sony still with Blu Ray and the next Xbox with major PC support, better menu integration (no loading times, smoother), lots of apps to make it a "ultimate media player" and lots of digital downloads. The graphics won't change much tho in my opinion..

Maybe what higher end PC's can do, a little more at most (and that's a stretch). Both companies will play it safe now that it's so much cheaper for all of these things.

I wan't whatever's shown to wow me obviously but the closer we get to launch the more I feel like both systems will just be more streamlined and refined. Like the hardware version of Skyrim x3. Without backwards flying dragons & lag (for the PS4) hopefully!

hellvaguy4475d ago (Edited 4475d ago )

You forget the first few years of consoles hardware is heavily subsidized + they dont need to run a resource hog of an OS. Also, most all games are just made for consoles with dx9, then ported over to the pc, so they arent even fully optimized for pc hardware.

With that mind, similiar to the current console gen was, I'd expect ps4/720 to be similiar to a $3k pc in terms of what you see (maybe not raw data crunching power, but real world visuals).

Another look at the CryEngine 3

Now that deserves a bubble.

JBaby3434481d ago

Great stuff. That Titanic video was outstanding. I love the lighting effects and reflections.

tachy0n4482d ago (Edited 4482d ago )

i found another epic look at cryengine 3 :D

Razongunz4482d ago

crysis meets titanic? luv it.

I am only a bit worried if us humans can keep up with the speed that hardware develops at.

Theres only so many people out there that can craft hollywood level cgi, and with the current increase in demand for spectacular gfx, i keep wondering how we will possibly keep finding enough talent capable of producing these gfx.

Its nice to have speedy hardware, but you also need people capable of producing enough eyecandy.

personally i like to draw, and it can be quite a hassle to improve upon your own work, and we canot keep improving at unlimited speed.

In the end consoles may get so powerfull, that most artists wont be able to take advantage of the visual aspect anymore.

NoUseMerc4482d ago

Middleware and game engines like the ones in this feature help developers create the visuals seen in high-end games faster, easier, and more realistic.

Foxgod4482d ago

That part is true, but it still requires an amount of skill.
Where 10 years ago you could produce top level gfx at age of 20, you now need a lot more experience to be able to produce top level gfx.

Eventually all the top level artists will be seniors, with 30+ years of experience :P

Hufandpuf4482d ago

That's why professionals are trained. Also, updated engines aren't totally new engines of any kind. They are usually updated and retain familiar interfaces so people can understand them better. It's all about accessiblity.

Foxgod4482d ago

training is also limited tho, if we want people to go as fast as hardware develops, we need to start upgrading ourselves too :)

Bring out the ol cyber upgrades.

benpicko4482d ago

If you've seen Euclideon's Unlimited Detail engine, they made a way that allows you to scan in real world items. This makes it possible to just make an actual clay model, import it, clean it up, and then make it's rig, and you're set.

Foxgod4482d ago (Edited 4482d ago )

That would be a solution, but i dont desire that, it would lead to computers replacing humans to the point where no talent would be required anymore.

Game development would become a minimum wage job....
Where only the writers and technical designers still get a good cut of the profit.

hellvaguy4475d ago

@Foxgod

"i like to draw, and it can be quite a hassle to improve upon your own work, and we canot keep improving at unlimited speed."

This form factor in video gaming won't ever die out. Just look at the arcade sales. I think arcade level games with thier unique/quirky fun aspects can co-exist with these multi-million dollar gaming projects.

Not even too mention, cell phone/tablet gaming which these types of games/apps are the bread and butter of thier existences.

Mac is OK4482d ago

Why? Bioshock was built on the Unreal Engine 2.5, and COD 4 based off the quake 4 engine.

stevenhiggster4482d ago

Actually COD is using the Quake 3 engine! From 1999, very tweaked mind you.
I do imagine that most next gen games will be built using upgraded current engines.
We have some really good engines out there just now that are being held back by current hardware, just look at that Cryengine 3 vid posted by NoUseMerc, thats a current gen engine but no current console could run that.

Virtual_Reality4482d ago (Edited 4482d ago )

I assume PC games will be at 2 next gen more advanced when the next gen consoles are released.

>> There's no need to have high end GPU's for PC to have better detailed graphics.

dark-hollow4482d ago

Ugh.
Look. I've played many pc games running on GTX 560 TI mostly maxed out.
While they look waay better than console versions it's not like most exaggeration of some pc players that pc is generations above consoles!

Mainly the reason is:
Some developers cater to the lowest common deniminatir so they won't push pcs.

The second reason not everybody have a high end sli 580 so they won't develop a game that only a few can run it decently.

Foxgod4482d ago (Edited 4482d ago )

It would be nice if high end computers become affordable for all.

If we somehow would stop selling low spec pc's, then the market for pc exclusives would increase big time.
Theres just too few people now with a high end rig, to make it feisable to develop a game for them with a high budget.

Theres more then a billion pc's out there that run windows, but only a tiny fraction of those could possible run a high spec pc exclusive.

Imagine if there would be at least 500 million high end gaming pc's out there, developers would be jumping to take advantage of pc hardware by going big budget on pc exclusives.

A top game could hit 100 million in sales then.

vortis4482d ago

Lol I have 5770s Xfired and they can run all the current games maxed out. IT IS a generational gap just based on what I'm seeing and playing.

Also, GTA IV IceEnhanced and Skyrim ENB are literally a generation above anything on today's consoles and it doesn't require a $2,000 computer.

kaveti66164482d ago

PC games are never more than a gen ahead. The hardware itself might be, but the games are held back by consoles.

Dark_Overlord4481d ago

I don't think its fair to blame console gamers due to devs being lazy, its not their fault a company wants to spend as little as possible and rake in massive profits.

Some devs choose to use what they have available for games, i.e Witcher 2, Battlefield 3 etc

If anybody is to blame for PC games not being pushed to their maximum potential, its either lazy devs or greedy ceo's and shareholders

solidsheep4481d ago

Hey dark whats the point of pleasing a gaming base that mostly steals games?

4.5 million pirated copies of Witcher 2 out there, according to CD Projekt
http://www.joystiq.com/2011...
Its not being lazy its trying to make money.

I'm tempted just because I missed out on xenoblade chronicles x. But it's a big waste for just one game

Sgt_Slaughter444d ago

It's also a great system for backwards compatibility and emulation too, especially with the off TV play through the tablet.

hiawa23444d ago (Edited 444d ago )

I bought a Wii-U last year due to the fact that the Wii Punch-Out for some reason has not been ported to the Switch, which is odd since almost all of the Punch-Out games, arcade included are available for the Switch.

Prefer the wii/GameCube combo console myself.

Five Video Game Console Launches That Went Terribly Wrong

Yet they all turned out to be great systems with lots of gems, except for Jaguar. Wii U was a criminally underrated system. The Gamepad implementation of Zelda Twilight Princess was incredible! I was so disappointed they removed it altogether for Breath of the Wild because they wanted "parity" with the Switch version. Its a shame and it was a lame excuse.

You can tell BotW was designed around the gamepad usage, with all that menu navigation. That item management and weapon switching would have been 100x better with the gamepad. The worst part was they never let the wii U players know they were removing it! I got the game for Wii U at launch and was disappointed it wasnt there.

PS3 was a mess at first but what a turnaround! That was a crazy generation. Uncharted 1,2,3, Infamous 1 & 2, God of War 3, Last of Us, MGS4, Ratchet and Clank series, Little Big Planet, Modnation Racers, Killzone, Resistance. My god they were so on point later in that generation it was crazy!

TheEnigma313589d ago

Nintendo Screwed themselves using the Wii name again. And the jaguar was straight doo doo; I still have it.

darthv72589d ago

I had it too... Jag could have been something great considering how good the ST games were. And now many of those have been ported but it was too little too late. The CD was just plain unreliable (apart from being an obvious design flaw). The thing about the Jag was it was just too Euro. given that Atari was built initially a US brand and then it later became more European and you could tell from the games. There is just something that stands out with EU created games vs NA or JP ones. Alien vs Predator was cool but def needed a better frame rate. At least 30fps instead of the 15-20 it was.

Im actually surprised nobody has gone back and tried to remaster that one for other platforms. It was a pretty good game.

PS3 had a buggered up launch but Sony was able to turn things around with the PS3. I still say the XB360 had a terrible launch half the systems cooked themselves and the RROD would appear. Then the 3DO, CDI, Pippin, the Amiga, 32X the list can go on and on with systems with terrible launches.
