The Most Overlooked and Underrated Games of This Gen

QJ writes: "Instead of just going over the most overlooked and underrated games of 2011, I want to take a more all-encompassing look at the most overlooked and underrated games of this generation. Here's a list of the games that I've enjoyed this gen that many other people seem to have hated, overlooked, or ignored - in no particular order."

zeal0us4491d ago

That game was amazing and fun.

Just brought bulletstorm for like 13dollars

typikal824491d ago

Add me for some Bulletstorm MP!

frostypants4491d ago (Edited 4491d ago )

Yeah, Bulletstorm is awesome. People only knocked it because it's not what they expected. It's not about killing opponents, it's about HOW you kill them. A lot of people couldn't get their heads around that. The co-op is phenomenal.

Plus, it was just $40 IIRC.

Commander_TK4490d ago

Lost Planet 2 imo. The best boss battle I've ever experienced.

hay4490d ago

Bulletstorm. Yesss, so much fun. It's a game being a game. I love it.

Ryo-Hazuki4491d ago

I agree. Vanquish is really amazing. I only need 1 trophy left to Platinum it but challenge 6 is a bitch. Also Catherine is very underrated as well

showtimefolks4490d ago

Vanquish is very under rated but is very short 4-5 hrs arcade style. Its very fast pace but its so much fun and now a days you can get it for Under $10. Buy it new to supports the devs its one of the better games this gen, instead of all military shooters

Enslaved. You can beat it in 8-12hrs depending on your pace also there is some very good story based dlc from what i understand. The story is very good but combat and platforming suffers, again $10 must buy

Singularity. for me this was a over rated game, the ideas were cool but i just could not get into it

Bulletstorm. this game is plain stupid fun with many tricks you can do with your weapons and kick must but you will have a blast

Brutal legend. this game has been $4.99 new many times, is it a bad game no but its also not a great game. 1st half of the game is very good but 2nd half felt dull. the story is quite long and online is a lot of fun. rpg elements are very fleshed out

Transformers: War for Cybertron. i had fun with it but lost interest very quickly but if you are a fan of the tv/comic series its a must have

other 2 i have not played.

i want to try metro-2033 any suggestions. i heard the ammo is very limited and your your torch light batteries die out quick is this true?

Johandevries4491d ago (Edited 4491d ago )

The Saboteur

Singularity is not so much underrated but Actipission just didnt give it the publicity it should have had. Put more harshly: there was NO marketing AT ALL.

I don't know what Metro 2033 is doing on the list, I thought it sold well and became pretty famous with the wider public

kneon4491d ago

Big agree on the Saboteur, one of my favorite games of the last few years.

ian724491d ago

I'm another Saboteur fan, great game.

JellyJelly4490d ago (Edited 4490d ago )

Singularity was amazing. It felt like a Valve game to me. Which is a big compliment to Raven software.

Metro 2033 I didn't like but Ghostbusters that was on the list is very fun.

Matrix2k4491d ago

Alot of those games are bad. Not under rated

radiant historia
disgaea 4
dragon quest joker 2
kirby mass attack
tactics ogre psp
dissidia 2
patapon 3

ect

were under rated US titles, theres more if I start looking at other regions

TheDivine4491d ago

Radiant Historia isnt underrated but its overlooked. Most reviews and fan feedback ive seen says its the best jrpg since chrono trigger. Enslaved is def overlooked, imo it was one of the top games ive ever played, wish more people gave it a shot but everyone hates NT because they dogged the ps3. Lost Odyssey is the most underrated game this gen to me, if it came after ff13 or was named ff it wouldve gotten near perfect scores and sold 5 million. As it was people said it was too old school and expected ff13 to reinvent the jrpg, we see how well that worked lol. Metro 2033 is underrated on 360, its one of the best games on the platform but isnt widely known. On pc it gets theprops it deserves.

Matrix2k4491d ago

The real overlooked gems this year were better than the mainstream hype titles

MoreRPG4490d ago

i agree with Lost Odyssey is underrated i'll choose LO over FF13 every day i don't why there isn't a sequel already

spektical4491d ago (Edited 4491d ago )

most overrated game this gen: GTA4 by far.

Captain Qwark 94491d ago

agree with both of you....

most "overlooked" goes to dark souls or lost Odyssey imo, each of those deserves 2+ million in sales

and on that note, the games he listed...

Singularity = never played
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West = enjoyed the demo
Vanquish = demo sucked
Bulletstorm = demo sucked
Brutal Legend = game sucked
Ghostbusters: The Video Game = game sucked
Metro 2033 = never played
Transformers: War for Cybertron = bit repetitive but very good still, agreed

lastly, that web sites design is terrible, he really could list all those on a single page, f*ck them

TekoIie4490d ago (Edited 4490d ago )

In all seriousness I think it's mw2. I remember when the teaser was released, it was like skyrim at the vga's last year but not as bad. 1 month after release and the hate begun with the javelin and Semtex glitch...

ZippyZapper4490d ago

GTAIV is only overrated by one group of people, and we all know why.

Venoxn4g4490d ago

I agree 100% with you, the only thing that I liked was graphics at that time.. but after playing it some time, I was booooooooored a lot.. actually I think that GTA: Chinatown wars is a way better..

Overrated is MW3

gillri4491d ago (Edited 4491d ago )

do they mean undersold or underrated? casue they are all rated quite highly

I have played Enslaved, Vanquish and Metro 2033

Im a big horror fan so I naturally liked Metro 2033 even though we have seen the setting all before

Vanquish's gameplay and graphics were incredible,

But for me Enslaved was the most undersold, what an incredible setting, gameplay was average but what a journey

If I was rating Enslaved for story, characters and setting it'll get a 9, but gameplay a 6

If I was rating Vanquish for gameplay it would get a 9 but story a 2 and length a 6,

Metro 2033 for atmopshere would get a 9 but gameplay and story 6/7

but all in all those games I mentioned averaged in the low 80's which when all things considered, is about right

Soldierone4490d ago

In my opinion Enslaved had massive amounts of potential, but the unreal engine and how they used it totally killed the game entirely. Would have been better off if they used the Heavenly Sword engine in some regards and ported it to 360 instead.

gillri4490d ago

not for me , looked incredible

You left out The Darkness games bring those back

fan_of_gaming4d ago

The head of Nightdive Studios has posted that The Darkness is on their list of games they want to do, so hopefully something comes from that

Yi-Long5d ago

Little Big Planet 1 and 2 deserve a mention, IMO.

Good call on Motorstorm, a game released 2 gens ago but still looks and feels so good. Motorstorm 2 and Motorstorm RC were gems as well. They followed up the Motorstorm games with the brilliant Driveclub, which still manages to put modern racing games to shame. Imagine closing down a studio as talented as that ... (!) Incredible.

A little 'arcade-gem' back then was The Last Guy, a top down 'follow the leader' snake-like game where you had to find and lead survivors to safety during an alien invasion, on terrible looking 'Google-earth' maps. Graphics were poor, even back then, but would love that same gameplay with modern maps and graphics.

Street Fighter 4, once it finally had a full roster, was quite good, but it was always an ugly game, sadly. Imagine bringing that back while using the current SF6 engine.

fan_of_gaming4d ago

Good suggestions, I'd be in for
LittleBigPlanet
LittleBigPlanet 2
Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
Motorstorm: RC

purple1014d ago

God damn I love motorstorm so much

At the time I had a low-mid range sony 40” tv, The latency to the controller was waaaay too high, would to play a modern version

In saying that later I got a 3d lg tv and playing the 3d motorstorm in my bedroom with the environment crumbling around the track, was something special, specially compared to what others were playing at the time, will always remember that

Skuletor4d ago

Some good choices here and Resistance: Fall of Man is my most wanted PS3 remaster/remake. Not sure about their claim it was Sony's answer to Gears of War though.

CrimsonWing694d ago

I’d rather have sequels than remakes. Look at Dead Space 1 Remake. Would’ve been cooler if we got a new entry and it failed with sales sealing the fate of a sequel rather than just replay the same game and it fail in sales and we never get a new entry.

Remakes are great for things like PS2 and earlier games to really get a crazy new graphical coat, but I think we should ease up on all these remakes and actually do sequels.

fan_of_gaming4d ago

Yeah for sure, sequels would be ideal. But in the current market environment where many big publishers are risk-averse, I'd rather get a remaster or remake that a developer can do on a budget that will be approved, rather than nothing for an IP.

Inverno4d ago

I rather they remaster and port over to PC and current gen all the games permanently stuck on PS360. Those games don't need remakes, they need to be given a chance to live again outside of their confined consoles and then give a few proper sequels. Like Sleeping Dogs, Motor Storm, LA Noir, should get another entry.

fan_of_gaming4d ago

Yeah I'd be fine with remasters of PS3 games too, they don't have to be remakes.

Duty Calls - Epic Games' Forgotten Call of Duty Parody

Back in 2011, Epic Games and People Can Fly launched a Call of Duty parody - Duty Calls - that has been lost to the annals of history.

closed_account304d ago

"Duty Calls: The Calm Before the Storm" sounds more like a massive case of the sh**s. 😂

I saw the parody mention, and half expected the ability to drop a deuce on your opponent... I left disappointed.

Bulletstorm - A Cult Classic Worthy of Revival?

Bulletstorm will soon receive a VR remake, but is it worth revisiting? Take a look back at the original 2011 release.

IMissJimRyan311d ago

Absolutely. I remember when the game came out on ps360, I thought: "wow, another shooter" and in the 7th gen that wasn't an unfair reaction.

But when the game was re-release on ps4 I took my time an played it (it was on playstation plus at the time) because, ironically, I missed a shooter in that console. And boy, what a fun game! They made a game to be played and not to be watched. It was a fresh air in the genre that deserved better.

So yes. Maybe it find its audience this time.

SullysCigar311d ago

It's an awesome game. The only exception (for my taste) is the script writing, which is OTT, but I guess that's what they were going for. It does at least match the OTT action and gore. I thought it was great overall and actually being in this game is going to be bonkers!

IMissJimRyan311d ago

Yeah, I agree that storywise it's not an Oscar nominee, but it's like a porn movie in game format.

Abnor_Mal311d ago (Edited 311d ago )

Agree with the over the top script, and felt at the time that was the only thing that people were hyped about, the language and not game play.

But in vr this game is going to be great. It has everything that would make a great vr game. Lots of bombastic action, gunplay, blood, and that leash.

Looking at the gameplay now it seems that the game was ahead of it’s time and was perfect for vr before vr wasn’t even off the ground.

Venoxn4g311d ago

I loved the game back in the day and will love in VR even more!

Yui_Suzumiya311d ago (Edited 311d ago )

I got it on PS3 at launch and am still waiting for the long rumored sequel to finally be announced. Currently have it on Switch and wish a physical version of that would be released. Absolutely love it.

FinalFantasyFanatic311d ago

I actually feel like this game gets revived all the time, not that I hate the game, I actually quite like it, it's just constantly available, unfortunately I'm not a fan of VR so I'll be skipping this version.
