What Should Be Next For PlayStation in 2012

Joel Taveras writes, " ['What Should Be Next' is a weekly column where I examine and discuss certain trends, franchises, genres and ideas in the gaming industry, and where they should be headed.]

If you would have told me in 2004 that in the next generation of consoles the Gamecube’s successor would be the new king, that Microsoft would take a 10 million unit head start, and that Sony’s PS3 would be playing catch up — I would have called you an idiot. And I would have been totally wrong because that’s exactly how it all went down. But now, six years into the current gen, Nintendo is at a standstill and the margin that once separated Microsoft and Sony is now less than 2 million units. Sony is in position to reclaim the crown, but there’s still some unfinished business that needs to be done before that happens. "

I would like to see...

A Orange Box styled collection from Valve announced if Half life 3 is shown at E3 with L4D, L4D2, Counter Strike: GO and maybe a updated TF2 which will all be updated through Steamworks. Could be the best thing ever....

NaughtyDog buys the right back off Activision for Crash Bandicoot and also Spryo aswell....hell if Insomniac don't want it ND may aswell buy it.

One last big update for the PSN, get all the PS1 Classics out...especialy for Europe aswell our PS1 classics suck.

If they could...and had the chance, get Resident Evil 6 to be an exclusive. I would of said GTAV but thats not going to happen with how much money it makes....nice thought but still.

At the VGAs next year have ND announce a new one off game as the last game for the PS3. No point in making Uncharted 4, they should keep that for the PS4. I mean theres some good marketing here if they can get some titles announced alongside the PS4 (if it's announced in 2012), some which would be launch games. Jak 4, Uncharted 4, God of War 4, Resistance 4, Killzone 4, basicaly of the big "4" games

JoelT4509d ago

That's one hell of a wish list you got there.

Biggest4509d ago

All I want is more games that can't be found anywhere else. A nice mix of multiplatform, PSN, and full retail exclusives is what I think should be next. Also. . . I am fully aware that this is already the case.

pc_masterrace4509d ago

The PS4. I just picked up Resistance 3 today and it feels like I'm playing a PS2 game! The textures are really bad and the jaggies are all over the ****ing place. Wow PC gaming has really spoiled me.

Iroquois_Pliskin4509d ago

pc_masterrace, you can't let graphics completely cloud your judgement man

Game3s4509d ago

2012 will be a slow year, the big 3 will be focusing on next gen.

JoelT4509d ago

There's not really a rush to next gen, especially if all it will bring is more visual polish. Sony's primary focus will be selling Vitas.

Game3s4509d ago (Edited 4509d ago )

Up to now the vita has not shown me any innovation or a reason to buy it, is just a more powerful psp nothing else nothing new.

So Sony has a lot of work to do if they want to sell the Vita and they better focus on next gen if they don't want nintendo and microsoft to get the lead.

DigitalRaptor4509d ago

@ "a slow year"

Nope, there's plenty of content (as usual) to keep fans happy year round. Talking exclusively of course.

@ "vita has not shown me any innovation or a reason to buy it"

you clearly haven't been looking close enough! plenty of innovation in both tech, and game ideas.

Game3s4509d ago (Edited 4509d ago )

Wonder what those many exclusives, it will be a slow year their will be exclusives but far less than this year , as for the Vita it has no innovation what so ever if you talking its multimedia purposes i can already do those on the smartphone it is just a psp with a better specs, so tell me what did the vita do that is innovative? come on tell me what new experience did it bring to handheld gaming?

DigitalRaptor4509d ago (Edited 4509d ago )

What exclusives? Like I said you're not looking hard enough. There are almost, if not just as many exclusives next year for PS3. I'll lift a list from one of my previous posts:

Starhawk, Twisted Metal, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, The Last Guardian, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Jak & Daxter HD Collection, DUST 514, Yakuza: Dead Souls, Journey, possibly Quantic Dream's next game, Santa Monica's next game, The Last of Us, Sony Smash Bros (aka Title Fight)... and more. That is a slow year to you?

About innovation - yes, you're right about it having the same features of a smartphone, and yes, it's a more poweful PSP, but I'm not talking multimedia. I'm talking games.

Two features alone that I think should be considered innovative:
- Rear Touch ( http://www.modojo.com/featu...
- Intui-Aim ( http://inagist.com/IGN/1466...

Look at Reality Fighters, look at Escape Plan, Little Deviants, Gravity Rush. These are innovative games with innovative gameplay and features.

There's also NEAR functionality for games, which is pretty cool and I've not seen that before. These are features that have been shown before the console is out and there will be plenty more to come. If you can't notice the implications of games using these features, you're pretty lost!

@ forevercloud3000

Very true, and I forgot to add in TRANSFARRING from Kojima. Another great step in gaming, whether it's considered innovative or not. Vita has the core aspects nailed down (network, dual analogue, controls, build quality, processing power) with some added functionality that adds just enough innovation to stay relevant and please fans of portable gaming.

forevercloud30004509d ago

@Game3s
What are you expecting them to do? Add a motion attachment to handhelds or something? Somethings don't need to steer far from previous entries because to do so detracts from the over all experience. Vita is a very capable handheld and boasts an impressive roster of functionality.

Vita improved upon PSP core elements and added a few new ones. Apps, Graphics, General funtionality are great improvements. Innovation is truely a trick of marketing. Motion tech and touch functionality are both OLD ideas that just didn't become popular till now. Transfarring at least can be seen as a great innovation for the Vita. Also games(which are Vita's main focus) don't have to reinvent the wheel just to be good. Sony's roster of games in unparalleled at the moment. So many great games to choose from for Vita that vary in genre and playstyle...
-SuperStardust Delta: Arcade shooter
-Uncharted GA:Action Adventure/3P Shooter done right on handheld.
-Resistance BS:1st Person Shooter
-Persona 4 Golden: JRPG
-Ruin:Dungeon Crawler WRPG with inventive online
-Gravity Rush:Action game/RPG elements
-Escape Plan: Puzzler
Little Deviants: Minigames
-Whole assortment of other games as well.

Uncharted series doesn't do much other games haven't before but that doesn't stop it from being some of the best games this gen. I find games that utilize what we already know gamers like and perfect on it instead of adding useless innovation.

Tell me you already saw these on smartphones so I can also buy one. If not, please lay off the weed.

slow? I don't know about that with the way Sony behaved this year releasing exclusive after exclusive one after the other like they want to make the deadline before the end of the world....nope.

The Last of Us, Sorcery, Twisted Metal, The Last Guardian, Uncharted Golden Abyss, Gravity Daze, Dragon's Crown, Nino Kuni, & all those multi-plats etc etc I don't think things are slowing down a bit.

Troll harder next time with sense and logic.

HeavenlySnipes4509d ago (Edited 4509d ago )

Starhawk (the beta is awesome)
Sorcery
GTA V
and Twisted Metal will make for an awesome year.

Hopefully we get another KZ announcement at E3 (better go back to your KZ2 roots GG)

D: How could I forget about the Last of US? I also still need to get UC3 and Skyrim (and Arkham City, and BF3 >.<)

Getowned4509d ago (Edited 4509d ago )

nice I'm looking forward to Twisted Metal,StarHawk,GTA5,that new Naughty dog game "last of us",new rainbow6 game hmm can't think of anymore at the moment.

I'm actually hopeing they hold off on KZ for a while and try a new game.I want new stuff :P

forevercloud30004509d ago

KZ series needs a new writer because the one the currently have sux balls. KZ1 had a great script and overall plot from beginning to end.

KZ2 was hit or miss but the excellent performance of the Villains(Radec and Vasari) saved the game's story for me. KZ3's story was just ok but ultimately forgetable.

Please do not put Destiny’s monetization into Sony’s first party games. The monetization is what’s driving players away from Destiny.

PlayStation officially losing it.. fans will never support gaas games

just_looken14d ago

@car

The new boss did a interview in japan he wants to tap into the mobile market like nintendio so he give 0 fucks about gamers/fans

https://www.pushsquare.com/...

Redemption-6414d ago

@Cacabunga
You only speak for you and those who think like you, but most fans will support what they want. Playstation and PC fans are literally supporting Helldivers 2 and that is a gaas. Maybe you wouldn't, but many more would if they like it.

Huey_My_D_Long14d ago

@Redemption-64
Look, Im not making any judgement calls about this guy, but I will say that Helldivers 2 GaaS model is unique to Helldivers, and legit the only other game I can think of thats similiar was the Avengers game except HD2 pass is still better.
The fact that you can earn in game currency in a way that doesnt make you feel like you have to grind forever, as well you being able work on that pass that you bought...on your own time without a time limit...that right there is fucking huge to me, and I can't name any game other than avengers that avoided trapping players with FOMO logic...I think GaaS on HD2 shouldn't be compared to the rest of the industry...it should be copied.

Einhander197214d ago

Cacabunga

Helldivers 2...

Redemption-64

In Europe it's a 60 40 split favoring PC.
In the US its a 60 40 split favoring PS5.

So PlayStation owners supported the game just fine, it's not getting carried by PC or anything like that.

FinalFantasyFanatic14d ago

@just_looken,
I'm perfectly fine with the way Nintendo entered the mobile market, I never touched their mobile games, meanwhile, the console/handheld stayed the way it is. As for being a bean counter, he's probably going to reel in these massive budgets that Sony's studios have had lately, I haven't played Spiderman 2, but I cannot see how they almost tripled the budget for that game.

@Redemption-64,
That's an exception to the rule, I'm expecting a lot of these GAAS games from Sony to fail, to be fair, they only need a few to succeed, but I would have preferred that they put more of their resources into other types of games.

DivineHand12514d ago

True their monetization is driving players away and at the same time, their decision to chop out content and convoluted systems is keeping new players away from the game.

Joe91314d ago

I don't think that will happen based on how things worked out at Naughty Dog now that we know what we do, seems they had the option to fully commit to live service games or stay making single player experences so they gave up on their live service game. We are not sure how things came about with Bend making a live service game but I hope that was not a forced situation. Sony doesnt seem like they are forcing studios to switch up but we will see, Sony's bread and butter is single player games it is how they dominated the console market.

Obscure_Observer14d ago

Yeah, I though Sony learned something from all their failures in the LS segment under Bungie´s disastrous leadership and supervision which led to games been cancelled, studios closed and all the people laid off.

Looks like Bungie still plays a major role in Sony´s LS initiative and Sony is not backtracking on their GaaS plans.

S2Killinit14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Are we forgetting that Destiny is also a highly successful franchise? I feel like that definitely deserves mention here.

Besides, there is no reason why a person cant learn from past experiences.

Joe91313d ago

I agree, people act as if Destiny flopped when it came out lol it took 9 to 10 years for the numbers to fall yet people are still playing it add the success of Helldivers 2 no wonder Sony is going forward down this path.

S2Killinit13d ago

Personally, I see no problem with Sony also having service games as long as they make good ones, and more importantly they deliver the AAA story driven games that they are known for. So yeah, I agree 100% with you.

Christopher14d ago

I mean, this person made some pretty bad decisions at Bungie. I hope they've learned from them because I definitely don't see those type of ideas as good for PlaySation in general.

CrimsonWing6914d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Honestly, what’s to learn from? How to make people happily continuously dump money into a single game over its life-time? Buy season passes continuously for several years with a smile on our faces?

GaaS is a design decision that is everything wrong with this industry. The fact that Helldivers 2 did so well and people defend the monetization because it was $40 and is a fun game, scares the sh*t out of me to see that the door is open and all shift will probably be to replicate that in future games. We already know the ROI for traditional game dev cost isn’t doing it for them.

I thought with Jimbo leaving we’d see a change for the better… I’m not so sure now.

S2Killinit13d ago

Service games are being offered by everyone. Sony cannot afford to only create single player AAA games. No one can. They already said they will be doing both.

Abnor_Mal14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Ps5 gamers in 2023 seemed to play more live service types of games, so regardless to how people feel about them, numbers don’t lie and Sony is going where the money is. I mean look at the excitement around Helldivers2, people are showing that they want live service games.

Christopher14d ago

They play long-time existing live service games like CoD, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and the like. Mass majority of new live service games are considered failures and aren't moving gamers away from older games.

just_looken14d ago

Yep the huge issue with live service is they need paid players along with a reason to play them.

You forgot mobile market that also taps into that player base as well as the eve online style games there is only a certain amount of krakens/whales blind supporters compared to the amount of live service games we have its not sustainable math wise.

700 restaurants making food for every seat for 1000-3000 eaters just does not work out

Einhander197214d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Christopher

I am not a big live service fan and literally own zero of the games you listed, but that is not true, unless you call games that aren't the top games to be failures.

There are tons of live service games that are profitable.

Games don't have to be the biggest game ever they just need to make more than they cost.

I challenge you to show professionally prepared data that shows that more live service games fail than make enough to keep going.

Because all the data that I have seen shows that live service is less of a gamble than making a big AAA budget game which needs to survive off retail sales.

FinalFantasyFanatic14d ago

I sometimes wonder if we're at saturation point, where it's hard for a new game to join those ranks unless it's particularly exceptional, people only have so much time and money to devote to these types of games.

romulus2314d ago

Correction, they have no issue playing good live service games

shinoff218314d ago

Lol it's not even a quarter of the ps5s sold. Helldivers may have been a hit but let's not say most are enjoying it because truth is most(the real most ) don't care about it.

S2Killinit13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

I play what is fun. If a live service game is good I’ll play it as long as its not a money scheme which Helldivers is not.

And Im a single player gamer.

mastershredder14d ago

How do you kill a franchise that already been killed?
Destiny’s grind, cash-in-on-playbass-cha-Ching, and pop-culture-insertion mainstream-me-too bs totally killed any rep Bungie had. Sony/Bungie, if you are doing this to ward-off players, it’s already working.

Sony May Soon Let You Decide How Much NPCs Talk In Games

Sony has patented to add multiple dialogue modes to let players switch between how many conversations with NPCs they want in the game.

Sony in the past has always been first at bat with new ideas/tech but in the end never fully use it or just toss it away.

Motion and control input traversing over higher and lower frequencies seperate from each other allowing the controller to do both
