IGN: Revengeance Will Ruin Metal Gear Solid

Metal Gear Solid helped define video games in the late '90s. Hideo Kojima's resurrection of Solid Snake on the original PlayStation was a waking moment for the industry, bringing a new sense of gameplay innovation and cinematic flair at a time when it was most needed. Yet increasingly Metal Gear Solid stands as the pinnacle of its series. The Metal Gear games have strayed from what made the original so great, and while each of them seem to capture some excellence from the past, watching the new Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance trailer proves the franchise has now irreversibly derailed.

I'll treat this as I do "The Walking Dead" TV series. It has nothing to do with the comics. "Metal Gear Rising" has nothing to do with "Metal Gear Solid". I don't give a damn what Konami or Platinum Games say.

aCasualGamer4511d ago

I doubt this has anything to do with the storyline in Metal Gear Solid series.

But that doesn't bother me. When i played MGS4 and saw that cutscene with Raiden going apeshiet on those cow-drones i honestly wanted a game where it's just me controlling raiden with his blade.

I finally got that. And i'm pretty certain, since Kojima has little to do with Revengeance, that we will be seeing a new MGS game from Kojima soon.

Also, didn't Platinum games make Bayonetta? That game was superb from gameplay point of view and revengeance will be great i'm sure of it.

crxss4511d ago (Edited 4511d ago )

it's MGR not MGS, game is going to be sweet in my opinion. since Kojima Productions is doing the story and Platinum games is doing the gameplay i don't see how you can go wrong.

the author of this article is: Rich George... an Executive Editor of IGN.com and the leader of the IGN "NINTENDO" team. come on now, MGR wont even be on a Wii console.

yesmynameissumo4511d ago (Edited 4511d ago )

My issue is they are saying it takes place years after MGS4, so they are (indirectly) tying the two series together. There's no way I'm not playing it, but I have to separate it from MGS. Regardless of what they say it's just Rising to me, without the Metal Gear. Platinum Games know how to make action titles, so I'm not concerned with that at all. I think if I separate the two in my mind, as I did with The Walking Dead, I'll enjoy it far more.

OmegaSlayer4511d ago

I think gamers nowadays are a flock of brainless people.
They only crave militar FPSs when we have seriously too many of them.
They go apeshit for a trailer that doesn't show anything (The Last Of Us) just because it's made from the best studio ever, they go apeshit for a CGI trailer that doesn't show anything (Transformer) from a decent dev studio.
They like the new DmC that is the epitome of emptiness and they bash MGR.
They want a story but complain about long cutscenes and linear gameplay.
I think something is seriously wrong with the new generation of gamers.
Seriously

FEARprototype4511d ago

they already said that they dropped the "solid" from the title.

so don't worry, enjoy the game when it come out^^

MsclMexican4511d ago (Edited 4511d ago )

Agreed....

The reason I loved MGS is because Snake seemed like a badass... he struggled to defeat the Metal Gears and you felt accomplished doing it...

But this.... YOUR TELLING ME RAIDEN CAN F**KING PICK UP METAL GEAR RAY... THROW IT LIKE A FREAKING BASKET BALL... THEN PROCEED TO CUT IT IN HALF?

This game really is Bayonetta with an MGS skin... and I detested Bayonetta (sorry but it was not a game for me)... played it on ps3, so yeah

Im just going to ignore this game, and refuse to treat it as part of the Metal Gear franchise

What Kojima presented at e3 2010 looked miles better than this

Also it pains me that xbox fans will be getting this as their first MG game...

Actually no the collection is out... get the collection and enjoy the metal gear franchise for what it is....

Optical_Matrix4511d ago (Edited 4511d ago )

What Kojima presented at E3 was exactly what we saw in the trailer. The whole slowing down and cutting people is STILL in the game. Hell, this graphical downgrade people keep whining about is non existant in my eyes.

That E3 trailer was basically a tech demo. Kojima even said in an interview that the reason the original Rising was cancelled is because they made that trailer without even thinking of where they could take the game from there. All they had was the Zan-Datsu concept and it was hard to make a game from nothing like that.

The game is a spin off. Has nothing to do with the main 'Solid' series of the franchise. Whats the problem? Plenty of great game franchises have spin offs. Stop crying because you all seemed to think this would be Metal Gear Solid 5. It never was meant to be in the first place.

Just pipe down. Don't buy the game and wait for the inevitable next numerical Metal Gear Solid game.

Iroquois_Pliskin4511d ago (Edited 4511d ago )

No optical_matrix, are you blind? Do you not see the difference between the e3 trailer and the vga trailer?

kaveti66164511d ago

You have no say in whether the game is canon or not.

I don't like the fact that Jar Jar Binks is an integral part of Star Wars, but what can I do about it?

Lord_Sloth4511d ago

Since it's not part of the Solid series, it's not very likely.

You can't spell "Ignorant" without IGN.

kaveti66164511d ago

Wow, people are still saying that?

SpaceFox4511d ago

It's not Metal Gear Solid FFS! IGN fails yet again.

LondonMediaOS4511d ago

And here comes IGN= Andy Dick; kills every party....

TXIDarkAvenger4511d ago

OMFG.

You people are just sad. Are you really hating on Rising just because it doesn't have stealth and your bf Snake?
Like f***, this game looks amazing, and I for one will be picking it up.

UltimateIdiot9114511d ago

You sir know nothing about MGS games and/or are no where remotely close to a fan.

If you know anything about the story, setting and the characters then you will understand the extreme caution fans are taking with Rising.

BTW, it's not because it's missing stealth and Snake not being it. Start from there.

TXIDarkAvenger4510d ago

Actually I do understand.

I know this game takes place after MGS4 which is stupid but whats stupid is people aren't even giving the game a try.

As far as I'm aware, stealth and Snake are key. If they weren't, then how come people are always complaining here about it?

Metal Gear Solid Can Work Without Hideo Kojima

There are more good non-Kojima Metal Gear games than one would realize. Scientifically, three examples prove a trend, and in this feature are three excellent Metal Gear games that Hideo Kojima did not direct.

I hope so, still cant forget MGS Survive , the first MGS game without Kojima involvement and it was a complete failure, the thing is Kojima way of thinking is outside the box and that's why their games 99% end up unique, original and a almost instant classic. MGS series are full of intricate things that somehows connects to each other, Lalulilelo, the Patriots, Outher heaven, Foxhound, PMCs , heck even Kojima manage to insert DARPA in there lol, a US government Defense Agency. So is really great MGS3 Remake is reviving the series but without Kojima who knows of the end result, I hope Konami have another or more developers insight their studios who can also think outside the box.

senorfartcushion319d ago

It actually can’t. But it won’t matter.

Kojima is Metal Gear the same way that Christopher Nolan is The Dark Knight, or David Lynch is Twin Peaks: The Return episode 8. Artistry is the creation of a thing from your own thoughts and feelings. Take away the original artist’s thoughts and feelings and you have a new thing entirely.

This isn’t going to stop the mega corporation creating a fake version and spending millions TELLING customers that it’s made with the same thoughts and feelings. The masses will buy the idea the same way the corporation will sell the idea.

just_looken319d ago

I guess everyone forgot metal gear solid rising was tossed to platnium games with a story script and that is it.

Z501318d ago

Kojima was involved in Rising tho

just_looken318d ago

kpjima just did the story everything else was platnium games look it up.

Hence i said script

neutralgamer1992319d ago

i think the bigger issue is whether or not Konami is actually interested in fully funding AAA games development. Even this remake is done by a studio not really known in gaming industry. Quality remake/projets vs cheap cash in quick releases. Which way will Konami head. I am a huge MGS fan and i feel like Kojima did long time MGS fans dirty with how made MGS5 and it's story elements

senorfartcushion318d ago

Remakes and remasters provide a gateway through to producing AAA games faster and cheaper.

RaveTears319d ago (Edited 319d ago )

Actually MGS Portable Ops which was technically the first canon MGS game that Kojima wasn’t mainly involved with it. Kojima was only the producer but not the writer and director.

Konami did other MGS spin off that were successful but that because Konami put effort. Just along Konami is not lazy and cash grab, they can a MGS game without Kojima.

i mean sure, but he made it the thing it is today and why people love it so much.

i think its not easy to replicate.

Flawlessmic319d ago

I doubt it could.

Say what you want about the bloke, but his games are uniquely his.

I don't think anyone makes games like kojima does, for better or worse.

Could mgs continue without him, yea maybe, but it would lacking his genius so wouldn't be the same.

Soulsborne319d ago

Well , he already created it. They just have to recreate it? Not like its a new concept or IP. Trash article.

Terry_B319d ago

Yes. It only needs motivated clever people.

Why We Need Metal Gear Rising 2

Demand for a sequel is about to skyrocket, like the good ol' days of 2013!

In case you're living under a suspiciously rock-shaped object, the recent PlayStation Showcase revealed that a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3 will be coming, alongside a Master Collection of Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3. While it is a remake of an existing game, there's a great deal of significance to it, considering the last time a game in the series came out was back in 2018 with Metal Gear Survive (and the less said about that, the better). Konami's decision to pull a Konami and feud with series creator Hideo Kojima has long left the fate of Metal Gear uncertain, but this recent announcement has led to all bets being off as to where Metal Gear can go from here.
