Expectations have been high for Mass Effect, the studio's first Xbox 360 release. After playing through the game more than once, IGN says with confidence that Mass Effect delivers on those expectations. The ride may get a bit bumpy at times, but it's one you don't want to miss.

watch the video review...nearly 5 minutes of the 7m 20s video is negative stuff...framerate "isn't stable to save its life"...lots of texture problems...AI is akward, and at times doesn't even "turn on" resulting in an enemy that just stands there...the combat "isn't deep"...controls are awkward and stall the combat...and numerous glithces plague the game...one of which result in the game not recognizing your button input at times...The galaxy is not deep, and doesn't differentiate itself much in any side quests...

haha that is pretty funny...I know its a great game, and I am a sci fi RPG fan anyway...I was treating this game like a warm up for Fallout 3 next year, and was fully aware that it wouldn't come close to bethesda's offering anyway...

if this game had been Exclusive to the ps3 and it released with all the problems this review noticed this would have gotten a 7.0/10. Its amazing that reviews are willing to ignore the problems with 360 games and absolutely destroy the ps3 games for less. Oblivion was full of glitches, pop-up, texture loading and framerate problems. It's combat was simply hit, block and magic. The conversations were not nearly as well done. The story wasn't as cool.

IGN Gave it a 9.3, and lots of people agree its one of the best RPG's ever.

Mass Effect pushes the limits of what can be done in the genre or in any video game for that matter.

i was going to buy mass effect but my friend bought his copy over lastnight and ive got to thank him, because i cant get past the flaws enough to actually enjoy the game

the graphics arnt anything special, the first planets trees look like poo, the framerate is shocking, the textures arnt anything special even after the finally finish loading up, im sure the story is good but the gameplay really chugs along at a pathetic pace

i like my xbox but im starting to get pissed with games that dont load textures or objests properly, its not verry next gen and even viva pinata showed pop up in the reflections of the lakes you dig, add this to gears of war mass effect and bioshock, it seems to be an issue with all the hyped 360 games

i would rather have simple but stable graphics over pretty but buggy

Oblivion was my favorite RPG since FFVII (after which I completely lost interest in the FF series...couldn't bring myself to get into one since)...

I played through the main quest on a friend's PC...then later purchased the PS3 version to get through the side quests (and did the main quest again)...while the PS3 version did get the overall best version of the game, there still were some minor graphical issues...it did not have texture pop in like the PC/360 version...had cleaner draw distances...and no where near as many framerate drops in my experience...and I was playing it on a pretty good strong PC with high detail...

but even on a PC, those issues where minor...the "glitches" i think most reviewers were talking about was mostly with quests...things like completing the dark brotherhood quest before getting into different guilds can basically trap you, in which your infamacy (sp?) can prevent you from continuing on in multiple quests that you have started...and lowering that can prove to not work...

lots of things like that could happen...the vampire problem of not being able to find certain ingredients for the cure potion depending on whether or not the main quest had been beaten...etc...were all around...but technically the game itself ran beautifully overall for such a huge game (100s of hours for everything...far bigger than ME)...

just got a call today from GameSpot earlier this evening...My preorder for ME will be in by 11:00 am eastern tomorrow...hopefully all the stuff this review mentions isn't enough to piss me off...

Try playing it before you ask. I would give it a 10 in graphics. It's the best looking game out there. It's kinda sad it does'nt get higher scores than games like COD 4 and Uncharted. I mean play the game for yourself and compare the work that has gone into the games. Mass Effect is more of an experience, it's not like anything I've played before.

What is the deal with everyone referring to Uncharted like it is the best game ever. The game looks cheesy and boring IMO. I admit that R&C looks fun, although it's does not look like a pixar film. Mass Effect is a great game with excellent graphics. It's definitely worthy for GOY material.

The score dosn`t match the all the complaints they mentioned, so i was a bit surprised to see it got a 9,4.

Still the game looks great though, a must for RPG-fans i`m sure. Too bad about the framerate being unstable, but from the score it seems the overall quality is very high.

Mart, I'm not saying ME should get lower score. I actually think ME is a game that deserves 9.9 and 10. And the true reason of me disliking IGN is their Assassins review. I may be a PS3 fan but that doesn't mean I don't like 360 games. BioShock was and still is my personal choice for GOTY. I just say the reviewers should rethink their strategies. Jade Empire definitly didin't deserve a 9.8-9.9 that IGN gave it. Much lower. ME on the contrary, deserves higher than 9.4.

A bit off topic, reviewers and sites just bash some games to get attention. Anyone remembers Destructiod's negative article on Mass Effect saying it's all talk without understanding the true nature of an RPG? They are doing it again by giving 5 to Assassins and 3 to Kane. EuroGamer tried the same attention seeking with Gears of War by giving it 8 and now is doing the same to ME.
I think those reviewers should stop being attention whores and just do their job professionally NOT personally.

Thankfully, IGN is not an attention seeker. My problem aside from their AC review is that ME definitly deserves a better score than Jade Empire and some other games that got 9.7s and 9.8s from IGN.

It's a trait that can be found in PS3 games. Little cons result in massive point deductions whereas, significant issues in 360 games, do not deter the perfect scores (almost) they get.

I'm not criticising 360 games, Mass Effect looks amazing, I'm questioning this review system here. Why do these companies find it in themselves to be bias against PS3 games - when they themselves struggle to find little wrong with it, yet dismiss it, and when it comes to the 360 - they can highlight and criticise it for issues like framerate and A.I, yet still give it an amazing score.

Maybe it depends on them trying to appeal to the mass, and that being 360 owners. Maybe if the PS3 had the biggest installbase, it would get a similar treatment.

So because the Wii has now sold more units than the 360 it will automatically begin getting higher ratings? That will be interesting because so far, they have generally been lower than the 360. Still all that will change now right?

I have been reading lots of responses on here....and I do wonder myself how "significant" the slowdowns and poppins really are. After all...the game is scoring really high.

So is it just minor graphical flaws to the point that it knocks the game down from being a 10? Or are they really an issue? I honestly cant say until I play it but I tend to think they are more minor than even IGN led us to believe. Because if they really were that noticeable and that much of an issue this game would be getting killed in the reviews for it. IGN gave this game a 9.4 with all the negatives that they stated. Those are not "minor issues" those are huge problems. Framerate is not stable and there are a lot of glitches and bugs such as you may have to reset the game to be able to continue because you got stuck or you can't shoot. I dont understand how people just trounce games like Mass Effect or Uncharted because of what some reviewer said on a website. I have watched plenty of movies that got bad scores from these so called expert movie critics and came away very satisfied. I am glad I didnt listen to the reviews. I would have missed out on a great experience.

Videogames are the same way. I dont let this website dictate what should be a good game or a good console. As an owner of both the PS3 and 360 I get to choose which games are "AAA" and which games are not. Just remember beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think this is a great site for checking up on gaming news, but some of these extreme fanboy comments really give this site a black eye.

I think that anybody that owns both consoles can agree that both the PS3 and 360 are great. Both consoles have great games. I wish we would stop hating on the other console just because you dont own it. Stop hating on games just because you cant play it on your console.

I have to agree that it seems that a lot of Xbox games are getting insanely high ratings regardless of flaws.

Halo 3 was not the perfect game. It is in DIRE need of a lobby system for the multiplayer, and they once again copied and pasted the level designs over and over. It got so many 10/10s it was ridiculous, then a week later I saw a multitude of articles complaining about it from the same people that gave it perfect scores. (it's still a great game, but I'm saying 8.5-9 tops)

This Mass Effect review sounds the same, loads of complaints and yet still an exceptional score, yes R&C gets praised for how amazing, and polished, and tight, and enjoyable, and smooth it is, yet it gets slightly lower reviews overall.

I know I only mentioned 360 titles there, but it's true for lots of games regardless of system. I have lost serious faith in reviewers. I am no longer in the camp of people that just look for the final number and move on. I read the reviews and find reviewers that are intelligent. It's the only chance anymore, without actually playing them, to find out if a game is good.

I *LOVE Bioware, i *LOVE the KOTOR games, and Mass Effect is the one game that has seriously been making it hard for me to hold off buying a 360 until next year.

with that said, i found this review angering. ign has a serious case of double standards here.

Uncharted gets praised for it's graphics. the game has no slowdown, no AI problems (those that have played the game know how vicious the AI is), and is drop dead gorgeous. facial animations and character animations are great. gets a 9 in graphics.

Mass Effect has texture issues, and "Unfortunately, the engine can't keep up and slowdown is rampant," yet also scores a 9 in graphics. to me, that sounds like, at the least, an 8-8.5 for graphics.

Presentation: Uncharted: "The whole thing has the polish of a major motion picture and goes out of its way to immerse you in the experience with amazing cutscenes, music and more." 9.5.

Presentation: Mass Effect: "A new high mark for storytelling in games. Gameplay can be confusing at first due to a lack of good tutorials." 9.5. Penny Arcade also seems to have some issues with the user interface and lack of tutorials. sounds like a 9.0, not 9.5 to me.

Sound: Uncharted: "From the low instrumental piece accompanying the opening screen to the sweeping score that runs throughout the whole game, this is what videogame music should be." 9.5

Sound: Mass Effect: "An unprecedented amount of top-notch voice work." that's all? they gave it a 10 for "An unprecedented amount of top-notch voice work?" uh, ok, i guess.

Gameplay: Uncharted: "This game is flat-out fun to play. Leaping from ledges is awesome, shootouts are fun, and the occasional vehicle section is a nice change of pace. Still, the pirate battles can be a bit much." 9.

Gameplay: Mass Effect: "The RPG elements are outstanding. Glitches, poor AI, and weak squad mechanics weigh the game down." 9. due to the "glitches, poor AI, and weak squad mechanics" i'd give it an 8-8.5 in the gameplay department, honestly.

Lasting Appeal: Uncharted: "The game is short, but the medals, rewards and bonuses should be enough to bring you back at least once." 8.5

while i'm sure Mass Effect rocks (i mean, it's made by Bioware). i'm just failing to see ign's logic for scoring the game the way they did. there are games out there that *DON'T have AI, framerate, loading, and glitches issues (uh, *UNCHARTED: DRAKE'S FORTUNE, for one), that have scored *LESS than Mass Effect (Uncharted again).

If we take a look at another 360 game like say, Naruto: Rise of the Ninja its got decent scores and has a 79% metacritic avg, if you read the reviews the game runs perfectly, looks great, no bugs etc

yet its NOT anywhere near the scores ME recieved, WHY IS THAT? the simple answer is usually the truth, because obviously what few problems ME does have, its NOT something that hurts the game much, ME may have some flaws that Naruto doesn't have but that doesn't make Naruto a better game does it?, which is why ME scores are higher. It seems some people just want to make it a bigger deal than it really is, its sonykids typical pattern, for every highly rated 360 exclusive, pick out 1 flaw pretend its some gigantic catasropic problem, and ignore all the other great things about the game as if it still doesn't rate the great scores its getting overall.

Also you dont take into account that a honest reviewer who even though he's very excited about the game will likely point out flaws simply to make sure he's doing a complete assestment of the game however even though he is pointing these flaws out it still may not change his feelings/opinions about the greatness of the game as a whole is (IGN 9.4) compared to other games which may have no such problems, yet still left the reviewer feeling like "meh, it was OK", for simplicity sake again its possible to see something bad about a game you really thought was a overall awesome experience and still think its miles ahead of the game that runs perfect but is still just an avg game.

Are gamers not bothered with incomplete games anymore? This is another example of IGN's biased rating system: 9.4/10 isn't the overall rating of the game. It's the amount of $10,000s of dollars they received out of a perfect $100,000.

But seriously, developers shouldn't be rewarded for pushing a console beyond it's limits. Why do you think MGS3 graphics weren't released within the 2nd year of PS2's life? BECAUSE IT WOULDN'T HAVE RAN PROPERLY!

It took until almost the 'end' of the PS2 for those kind of graphics to run smoothly. If a system can't handle the game, the onus should be on the developer to spend more time either compressing or decreasing the amount of data they expect the console to eat through.

Why do you guys think Crysis isn't available on console yet? You would think money-hungry EA would rush it out on multiplatform, but they actually have some respect for gamers. When a graphically superior game like Crysis can run smoothly on a console, it will then be released for consoles.

If you are one of the few hope have played this game and still have gripes about the score ign gave(for that matter all the great reviews), then fine, don't purchase the game or if you did return it and purchase something else. Remember it's Quality that matters NOT Quantity. But it's not like the 360 is suffering from not having one or the other. There's other games you forgot to list like:
Crackdown
Shadowrun
Forza 2
PGR 3
PGR 4
Dead Rising
Lost Planet
Chromehounds (I liked it even though it didn't do so hot in reviews)
Perfect Dark Zero (it was okay at the time, average at best)
Geometry Wars (Sure it's a XBL arcade game but it still kicks ass)

Crap now I'm sounding like a fanboy, Oh Well. This is N4G anyways. I might as well stoop to everyone elses level. F*CK THE PS3! I'm glad I never bought a PS2 when I was choosing which console to buy back in 2000 because I would've bought PS3 later on and become a very depressed gamer that would flame everything that is for the Xbox 360 because I would have nothing else better to do with my time.

just most recently AC ended up being better on 360, they just need more time with ps3, and so far this has happened with allot of ps3 games,do people have time to wait for poor ports on ps3.

also do people have time to waste on waiting for decent ps3 games,MGS4 got pushed back another 3 months, ff13.....so far no body really knows how much progress is done on that game, and half life was pushed back as well....it's already going to be 08 and thats all ps3 has.

in 08 NG2 comes out for 360 and so far with in the 5 months of development itagaki has already shown us a demo 3 mags of info a RELEASE DATE and trailers. also within the time that ff13 was announced mistwalker has already got two rpgs for 360.

Man I just don't unerase why people bash each other for owning a game console. While I do not agree with the way IGN reviews games; These are just opinions of people. I've see many members give logical and sound explanations about games and their objections to review sites giving unfavorable scores to games that may or may not deserve the scores they receive. The difference between the two people is that those who are giving the reviews are "professionals". It's their job.
On another note, Mass Effect looks like a shooter to me. In my book it's a shooter with RPG elements and not the other way around like the reviewer says it is. Still, I'm going to wait until the better RPG's (in my opinion) to arrive: The Last Remnant, Lost Odyssey, and yes even Final Fantasy XIII(whenever it is released)

comparing uncharted to mass effect is unfair to bioeware...uncharted is a game most developers could make...mass effect on the other hand is art and naughty dog does not have the talent in its studios quite yet..please stop comparing the good uncharted to the grounbreaking mass effect...on another note there is no bias,its just FACT that the ps3 has no special games..well actually you guys have cod4,assasins creed and oblivion,but you dont have exclusive games that rival the brilliance of mass effect,gears and bioshock..seriously the game is getting on average 9.5s from everybody,with the occasional low score that is bs and just trying to get traffic on their website..the game is a freakin masterpiece,and thats why most revewers point out the tech issues,bevcause if it wasnt for that the game would be the highest rated game of all time,but of course for now that belongs to mario galaxy...uncharted and ratchet are reviewed really high for what they are actually...id bet that kameo is better than ratchet,yet many reviwers felt that rathycet was slightly better.....the ps3 is an average system at best,its not as powerful as the 360,and the games arnt as good...the facts hurt,i know

I guess when your highly anticipated games turn out, very dissapointing (Lair) to mediocore(HS) to good but not killer apps(R&C, Uncharted) you have to blame somebody, look at all the whinning and complaining about the scores, the bottom line is ME is a great game it deserves a 9.4 from IGN, it deserved the 10 from Gamedaily, it deserved the 8 from Eurogamer, WHY? because thats what the hell EACH of these HUMAN reviewers felt it deserved, I dont know how many times I have to make this point to you "slow" kids, reviews are NOT scientific, NOT linear equations, NOT an absolute= in the end its not as if theres only one source(review) for a game thats exactly why metacritic and other similiar sites exist and the reality is that score will reflect what the majority of *professionals OPNINION is of the game, if you still have a problem with that, dont worry because the best thing about a FREE SOCIETY is NO ONE DICTATES to you what YOU have to BUY, YOU CAN BUY THE WORST RATED GAME OR YOU CAN BUY THE HIGHEST RATED GAME yep thats right Mario Galaxy is rated very highly, but guess what I could give a sh!t if it was rated a 15 out 10, I dont care about Mario, so you see sonykids this 9.4 from IGN doesn't have to mean sh!t to you, nope its all up to you, but what we dont need is more whinning and crying from sonykids just because their miserable about their exclusive games= its NOT my problem sonykids, blame sony=

The game is bloody amazing but i seriously hope bioware patch this game big time. I know this is Bioware's first engine for the 360 just Epic's gears of war which was filled with glitches but i hope the sequels get optimsied properly.

the game gets high praise despite it's flaws is one issue.Take it up with the reviewers. Personally, i'd like to know where the integrity of dev's is? Since they think its ok to release a game with such flaws! Said it before and i know i'll being saying this again.Todays developers are greedy to an extent never before known in the video games industry. Many modern devs appear to have no real interest in games only lining their pockets. Now i know many of you see nothing wrong in pursuing wealth for it's own sake,but for me without purpose or fulfillment it's empty. If you are going to develop games, then do it with a passion and desire that demands perfection. don't do it simply because its easy money.Too much business, not enough art! Needless to say i won't be buying a game with so many flaws,but hey, you guys enjoy your bug ridden, sloppy software. At least someone gets a new porche out of it, so that's all good then.

This is a ME thread so I assume you are referring to Bioware, so who are you to judge, do you not think dev's like Bioware and others put in alot of late nights and hardwork to make the best game they could, why do you assume that a few bugs and glitches means that these people didnt do their very best, have you ever watched a movie, that was the best movie you have seen in a long time, yet you still thought it had some flaws, something that didn't quite work well? Does that mean the movie is NOT impressive and still better that most movies? Does it mean that the writers, actors, director don't deserve high praise? I don't know what line of work you do for a living but I think even you will admit that everything you do is not perfect, but I as long as you feel you put in a honest days work, I bet you think you still deserve every penny of your paycheck.

Furthermore, I like many others have been gaming for a long time and I can tell you aside from a few legendary games over the years the quality of games RIGHT NOW is by far the best in history. Forget about graphics thats a given, but look how much gameplay mechanics, AI, story telling, game controls, and all the technical stuff like fps, resolutions, have evolved= think about it how much more dev's are doing in gaming vs 2 or 3 generations ago back when the game manual was the entire story to the game, and game levels were as simple as traveling from point A to B, using a few buttons to do, 3 different moves,

I mean come on games are so much more technical these days, sure they may have more powerful tools but like always, MORE of anything always raises the RISK of flaws, however I would still take a few hiccups that dont utimately hurt a brand new first time untested, but innovative ME, than a plain everyday game that simply runs perfect but doesn't do anything to make me want to keep playing it. Its not that anybody's cutting ME some "slack", thats exactly why they point out its flaws to say "its not perfect", but its doing so many other things so well that its still better than most other experiences.
