Modern Warfare 3 Xbox sales lead Battlefield 3's all formats

It was inevitable that one of the two big hitting games would come out on top and perhaps it was a mistake to have them release in close proximity of each other but some startling figures have shed some light on the cost of war between the two giants.

ZippyZapper4531d ago (Edited 4531d ago )

Yet any CoD are also the highest selling games on the PS3

darthv724531d ago (Edited 4531d ago )

I dont care for either MW or BF but generally speaking it is usually the simplicity of a jump in and play type of game that garners more players. Less learning curve to get to the heart of the action.

Now if both are virtually the same then it could be about one simple thing. Brand recognition. BF3 may be the more technical of the two but it lacks the brand recognition that COD especially MW has.

You can try and persuade people to leave MW for BF but they would need a really compelling argument to give up something they enjoy playing. Then again, entertainment value is subjective. We all place value differently in our gaming time.

saladthieves4531d ago

This is no surprise. I've said that the Call of Duty brand is associated with the Xbox platform more than any other platform out there.

Given M$'s DLC exclusivity deal with Acti, their love for all things shooters on Xbox (Halo series, Gears Series and the very high popularity of the Call of Duty series would make the Xbox version the highest selling one.

Even though Battlefield 3 is the better game of the two, people are most likely to stick with what they already know works and love. People who only play CoD will tell their friends to only play that as well. If only they'd see the awesomeness that is Battlefield 3....

Yup..by first quarter next year the top 3 selling PS3 games of all time will all be Call of Duty games. Easily the biggest franchise for the system. MW3 may end up breaking records on all consoles by the time it is through.

I've had fun playing over Live and I laugh at how a few of my friends at work are already working on their next Prestige. But, my gaming life has now stopped at Elder Scrolls. This has been on incredible fall and holiday season.

So what does that say of PS3 users then when COD also sells more than most other PS3 exclusives regardless of the genre?

raWfodog4531d ago

It doesn't say anything about the PS3 users at all. It just says that MW3 is a beast in sales.

Yes, I fed the troll. He was looking a little malnourished...

Or that more than half of the XBL MW3 gamers cant wait to try out the game hack/mods as they release, or claim they'll get you Prestige rank X for a certain amount of MSP in their BIO

ATi_Elite4530d ago

Not to discredit CODMW3 cause it is the highest selling game of the year but those BF3 across the board numbers ARE NOT CORRECT!!

Those BF3 number only account for RETAIL SALES! They completely left out the PC Digital Sales which we have no info on until EA gives it to us. As you may or may not know PC Gamers purchase most of their games Digitally.

But over 6 million on just the 360 is HUGE and a testament to the madness that is COD.

BF3 sales on PC have suffered enormously because of the Origin-disaster, which still isn't resolved.
At least in Germany.. the outcry has been MASSIVE, you could read about it in every damn newspaper.
EA shot itself right in its f*ing knee.

ATi_Elite4530d ago

I can not understand why i got 13 disagrees when all i did was tell the truth.

SOME people on N4G are a bunch of misinformed HATERS who just RAGE disagree without providing any information.

Those BF3 sales figures are incomplete until EA releases it's Digital Sales figures FACT!!

and like i said MW3 selling 6 million alone just on the 360 is a HUGE accomplishment.

Much Props and respect to those who disagree and provide information on friendly debates.

No, it is a testament to how many of us gamers have settled for the bare minimum. It is sad too. Expect next years cod to b the same engine as black ops, same generic story etc. As long as they are breaking records, they will spend little and improve even less. Yes, I like battlefield much more and I am happy that they attempted to push the boundaries with a new engine etc, but they didn't go far enough either. Here's to hoping that rice's next iteration will try new game modes, something new w Co open etc. I will buy their next game because i know they have proven the ability to push forward. Cod could help to push the genre forward w something new and fresh but we basically told them not to change a thing.

I'm glad to see that many of the hardcore gamers prefer B3. I just wonder how many copies of cod sold if u strip out those under the age of 16 & those who bought it because they wouldn't b able to show their faces in school if they didn't. My hat goes of to activision for creating this phenomonom but i am sad that the greatest franchise in entertainment history is able to get away with such stagnation.

Kos-Mos4530d ago

@darthv72

How on earth can you describe bf3 as complex?
Both games are teen games made for the masses.

FunkMcnasty4530d ago

@ Kos-Mos,
If you think that Battlefield 3 is not complex, then you must be that guy on my team who's not marking enemies, who's not capping/defending the objectives from a concealed or defensive position, who's not using their load out class to it's designated role, and who equips the flashlight/laser sight, but doesn't switch it off so as not to blind thier own teammates. You must be the guy on my team who's running around a map the size of Texas, doing bunny hops to avoid incoming fire while spinning to counter attack at range with a pump-action shotgun.

BF3 is complex. That's one of the reasons it has not sold as well as MW3, because the pop-culture crowd wants mindlessness. That's why commercial radio stations play Kelly Clarkson and Creed and not Wes Montgomery or Herbie Hancock.

well,360 leads for both mw3/bf.the console that many claim only kids play is the home for console sales of both run and gun and the mature shooter that people claim bf3.and please don't come with that 360 owners only buy fps titles non-sense....many other type of titles also sold well on the console....play games and not be loyal to some machine/ multi billion dollar company.

Very true about 360 not being just a kid FPS console (I have one as well) but I can't help but notice a trend that there are always the least amount of players on BF3 (check bf3stats) during school hours lol while PS3/PC are always greater. Than at night 4pm onward massive surge of 360 players. Just look right now for instance:

"I can't help but notice a trend that there are always the least amount of players on BF3 (check bf3stats) during school hours lol while PS3/PC are always greater."

PS3 & PC, the platform of choice for the unemployed! The numbers are low during the day because we're WORKING!

fluffydelusions4531d ago (Edited 4531d ago )

@Montrealien fair enough but I was mainly referring to the US since that is where the main Xbox user base resides and I believe the greatest TZ difference is 4 hours.

@grahf really? I think anyone with a nice enough rig to play BF3 on is not likely to be unemployed...

Montrealien4531d ago

That's the thing though, the 360 is the console of choice in the US, so it would be normal that during US school hours/work hours, less people play BF on the 360 or any console for that matter. I am pretty sure that fact stands everywhere else for all platforms. Unless the whole planet does not work, or go to school.

darthv724531d ago

its easy to make assumptions. Point is, we really dont know the real ages of those who play. There is a great possibility of users who play that do work during the same time frame as those who go to school.

It isnt like these stats are collecting ages of players. Also, a really good pc isnt absolutely need to play this game. Some can squeak by with the minimum and still play. Sure it isnt the same as having a few thousand dollars worth of latest tech but it gets the job done.

Focus4531d ago

You win, PC and PS3 are owned by kids not old enough to attend school and teenage drop outs and unemployed 20 somethings that live with their moms.
X360 users go to school, varsity and have jobs and can't possibly game when they are at school/work.

Solidus187-SCMilk4530d ago (Edited 4530d ago )

ahahhahaah.

School hours????? OR WORK HOURS.

I could easily say that those numbers indicate that people with ps3 and PC are unemployed people and home schooled loosers that play games all day, while 360 gamers are mature adults who are at work during the day.

But as you can see, generalizing a console community based on hours played is completely dumb and can be molded to form any moronic fanboy comment that we so desire.

Also, playing games during the middle of the day is not something that mature people are goign to be doing all day. Im actually pretty sure that most mature people would be way more likely to play games at the end of the day than during the day regardless of if they are kids or adults.

Legion4530d ago (Edited 4530d ago )

"during school hours"... wouldn't those same hours be work hours too?

Whats "sad" about people willingly using their money to buy what they enjoy? It's the same reason why people buy games like Uncharted 3, Skyrim etc., because they believe that they will enjoy it.

DigitalRaptor4531d ago

What is "sad" is not what you have describe, but that the worse game that is pushing no sort of boundaries or has its own artistic direction and has become the Happy Meal of first person shooters, is more popular and having better success than the much better game.

It's sad that Battlefield 3 is less popular than Call of Duty rehash 101.

Outside_ofthe_Box4531d ago (Edited 4531d ago )

Why are you ASSUMING that he thinks it's sad that people are buying what they enjoy?

He probably could have meant that it's sad that BF3 failed to compete with MW3 after all the hype.

What I find "sad" is that once unique FPS (i.e Killzone) have been ruined due to CoD's success.

LOGICWINS4531d ago

"What I find "sad" is that once unique FPS (i.e Killzone) have been ruined due to CoD's success."

Killzones been getting better and better with each iteration IMO. Sorry that you feel differently. Playing with Sharpshooter with KZ3 is the most immersive experience I've had this gen.

raWfodog4531d ago

@ DigitalRaptor

Some people may consider that 'sad' but it seems logical to me. Quality of games aside, it's pretty much well-known that the COD:MW series is more mainstream than the BF series.

The COD:MW series has always been developed mainly for consoles while BF has traditionally been developed mainly for PCs. There are currently a lot more console gamers out there than PC gamers, casual gamers included.

Even though BF3 is available on consoles, it is very hard to see it winning out over MW3 in sales, especially with casual gamers who vastly out-number 'hardcore' gamers.

MidnytRain4531d ago

Thats like blaming nintendo because bubsy 3d sucks.

Kos-Mos4530d ago

It`s sad that people like games without depth.

NeloAnjelo4530d ago

Killzone 2 was one of the most unique shooter experiences. The heavy controls, the weight of the player, the slow reload and turning speeds, and the no perks system is everything a core shooter should be. No auto aim or quick scoping, no air strikes... what made you a better player and top leader boards were objective points. No kill streaks. A player was better, because he was, it was his skills... the game didn't make him stronger or reward him more. The reward was being better and seeing your team dominate the top 5.

KZ3 has been CODerised... More people may have played the game at launch than Killzone 2, but this quickly dropped off. Most of the deicated players quickly left... and what do I know about Killzone? 800 hrs logged on KZ2, compared to 200 hrs logged on KZ3. 600 Hrs on COD4: MW, compared to 100 on COD:MW2.

trenso14530d ago

@NeloAnjelo i completely agree. i dont even think i logged in 100 hours in kz3 i got sick of the game. just wasnt the same as kz2 and felt dumbed down. even all of my cod friends who hated kz2 loved kz3. one of the most dissapointing games for me this year

GamerPS3604531d ago

wow, go play cod and make sure to take one copy with you when you die as well. :D

LightofDarkness4531d ago (Edited 4531d ago )

Because there's a point when what people are deciding to with their money becomes burdensome and toxic to the industry, both creatively and financially.

Think about the problem in the USA and the UK with fast-food and poor diets. At a certain point, it stops being solely a matter of personal choice and a free-market. Day after day, millions choose to eat McDonalds instead of something that doesn't have the salt content of the dead sea per 100 grams. Are they right to continue to do that? Are they doing it because McDonalds is clearly the best food available? Or is there a slightly more sinister problem at hand, highlighting the influence of marketing and branding on impressionable minds, which can have a seriously detrimental cultural and social impact?

Granted, it's a dramatic comparison, but it's not at all unfounded. In order to compete, other games try to emulate COD, trying to establish their brand in bolder and more subversive ways but always just riding on the same bandwagon as COD, and thus the diversity and quality of the products of the industry goes down. WAY down. All because it becomes unaffordable to be unlike COD, because investors know that's all the kids want to play and they want that COD money.

raWfodog4531d ago (Edited 4531d ago )

@ LightofDarkness

"All because it becomes unaffordable to be unlike COD, because investors know that's all the kids want to play and they want that COD money."

What you're describing sounds like it would be greed of the investors/publisher/developers to get that "COD money", not the consumers fault.

COD has not stopped developers from innovating and pushing the industry. Even though BF3 didn't sell as well as MW3, it still sold better than their expectations and was considered a success. If they decided to go the COD route just to get more money out of the consumer, then you can't 'blame' the consumer.

damnyouretall4530d ago

i had only one friend buy bf3 with me. everyone else mw3. me and my buddy dont understand cause they wont even try bf3 and it is the better game. i understand mw3 can be fun, but its not the best online shooter. everything EA said bout their game being better still holds true.

JokesOnYou4530d ago (Edited 4530d ago )

Lets assume what you're saying is true, which frankly its not, but for the moment lets assume that McDonalds is ruining the restaurant business with its cheap prices and our health with its fatning menu, lets assume COD is ruining gaming with its accessible gameplay and non re-inventing of wheel formula gameplay. The alternative you seem to suggest is that McDonalds and COD should just go away.....that because SOME abuse them by overeating or neglect to play other games then we need some type of government/ industry sanctions to dictate what we should be allowed to eat or play. GFTOH, what happened to freedom of choice?, what happened to personal accountability? If people want to eat unhealthy and get fat or smoke we dont need to make more laws to stop them, no instead we need to hold them accountable by making them pay higher healthcare costs, to offset future medical expenses and when they get sick that is a result of their own poor decisions but either way their choices dont effect my health actually Im in great shape, because I work at it, Im proud I just finished in the top 5% in the Spartan Race in Malibu CA this past weekend, still I like having the CHOICE to spend my money on an occasional meal at McDonalds, I dont smoke though but thats my choice and Im glad we live in a free world where I chose to buy MW3, fact is I prefer it vs BF3, ironicly contary to all the MW3 haters fear tactics darkness did NOT spread throughout the land, and you can still play BF3, UC3, Batman AC, Skyrim, etc.....but oh wait....the end is near since I just heard every dev will NOW only make COD cloned games starting in 2012 with Bioware overhauling ME3 using the COD engine with perks, killstreaks and OMG Shepard is trading in all his abilities plus armor for a riot shield and dual pistols. You' re right we' re all doomed!

Controversy in the COD community feels like it happens within an alternate timeline. Activision will take the piss with something, there will be a momentary fuss about it, and then they will forget about it and carry on anyway. Repeat this cycle literally every year for the rest of time.

Gridknac7d ago

They call that a crack head! Thats what this is really about, its an addiction. People who dont smoke cigarettes look and laugh at the addicts that spend $8-$10 a pack, but they cant help themselves, they are addicted. That same analogy applies perfectly to the whole MT industry. Only an addict that was not thinking clearly would spend this kind of money on something so frivolous. A round of multiplayer provides the same high a person gets from scratching a lotto ticket, or putting money on a sports bet. MT in general need to really be regulated because you have a generation of kids becoming adults who grew up only knowing the MT era of gaming. Its normal to them and they will in turn teach their kids the same by just being a gaming parent and getting their kids involved with them in gaming. Thats why no matter how ridiculous the headlines keep getting out of the MT industry, it never seems to fade or go away.

X-235d ago

I'm so tired of hearing about what they're doing with this game, its never going to change and it's never going to value the consumer over money, furthermore the people who engage so heavily in the microtransactions I guess allegedly are having a blast and can't wait to do it some more this year when the new version of the game drops.
