Already know the GOTY? Think Again.

You don’t need to be psychic to predict how the media’s GOTYs are going to turn out this year. Yes, there have been big budget hits and long awaited sequels. There have been exciting new franchises, returns of characters long left in stasis, and multiplayer gaming of a quality possibly superseding any year before.

But despite the big guns, the money makers, the games that are pushing gaming further into (and beyond) previous levels of cinematic mastery, there is one huge curve-ball. A game that has entertained, educated, scared, challenged, inspired and awed people of all ages. A game so wide in scope and purpose that to explain it to a prospective player is surprisingly difficult...

skyrim is my GOTY.

omi25p4536d ago

I hated uncharted 3's story. But enjoyed the gameplay, If it wasnt for the story it may have been my GOTY

BitbyDeath4536d ago (Edited 4536d ago )

I hope Skyrim gets GOTY as well.
It is mine.

EDIT: Before playing Skyrim i would have given it to Uncharted 3. But Skyrim is just such a massive improvement over Oblivion. Gotta hand it to them considering all the improvements made.

slayorofgods4536d ago (Edited 4536d ago )

I gave agree's to the Skyrim fans. I don't want them to feel left out here and I love rpg's; Skyrim stays true to it's genre without selling out to the causal base and still manages mainstream success.

This is no knock on U3, technically U3 is the best game ever made for the PS3. I just think Skyrim is more fun, and has more to offer when it comes to gameplay (100's of more hours of gameplay compared to U3).

But then again I am biased towards rpg's and have been playing Elder Scrolls before it was cool.

buddymagoo4536d ago

Skyrim has too many bugs to be considered GOTY in my opinion.

Skip_Bayless4536d ago

Sadly.. Skyrim will win the most Game of the Year Awards based on the aggregate score. I really wanted a PS3 exclusive to win it again this year.

Veneno4536d ago

It's so damn sad that Skyrim fans think their game is so much better cause it takes more time to finish. My friend who loves elder scrolls and I who love Uncharted have this argument regularly. He thinks UC is not good cause he finished it in 20 hours while I think Elder scrolls/fallout 3 provides many hours of gameplay but 90% of it is repetitive mind-numbing activity while at least UC keeps me stimulated.

mikeslemonade4536d ago (Edited 4536d ago )

Favoritism for RPGs is stupid in gaming culture. "Don't you dare knock RPGs". Gamers have a soft spot for ninjas, pirates, zombies, and RPGs. Some gamers are just so blind.

slayorofgods4536d ago (Edited 4536d ago )

@Veneno

There is a little more to my point.

Skyrim is a hardcore gamers game where as Uncharted is aimed at being more mainstream. There is nothing wrong with that, but using that formula makes it a lot easier for it to be a hit.

Most developers are afraid to make a hardcore game with the budget and time spent that Skyrim did. Not only that, Skyrim gained commercial success even though it stuck with a formula that you say is, "90% .... repetitive mind-numbing activity" a.k.a geared for hardcore gamers.

I hope Skyrim gets game of the year for that factor. Too many games are being aimed at casual audiences, and even the classic games are being watered down or made into some sort of fps.

Intentions4536d ago

Crushing was disappointing. The easiest Uncharted game to date.

Nonetheless it was still a good game. But imo goty goes to Skyrim, Portal 2 or Batman, Uncharted 3 still has a good chance to win also.

Don't know why BF3, Mw3 and Witcher 2 didn't get nominated. :S

Veneno4536d ago

@ slayorofgods

Don't forget that the sp campaign of UC3 is only the beginning. There are a multitude of online modes which extend the game's life endlessly. And competitve online in any game is anything but "mainstream". You have to put the time and effort in it to win.

So while UC1 could've been considered a short game, there is no argument that could help you say that the latter games are "short".

darthv724535d ago

are we talking individual platform GOTY or overall? Multiplatform GOTY for me is Batman AC. I havent played skyrim yet but my choice could change.

The Witcher 2 for me but that may change with Skyrim and Batman

mixelon4536d ago

Good to see The Witcher 2 get a nod from someone. I feel like it'll be overlooked by the end of the year. :/

slayorofgods4536d ago (Edited 4536d ago )

Almost forgot of this gem. I still think this game has the best graphics so far this year.

I'm not sure if it beats Skyrim for game of the year, mainly because of it's size and scope. Skyrim just has so much more content.

But, Witcher 2 deserves a mention for sure.

xPhearR3dx4536d ago

Looks like UC3 fanboys don't like the idea of it not winning GOTY like UC2 did. News flash, UC2 didn't have hardly any competition. This year's titles killed it.

Wintersun6164536d ago

@xPhearR3dx

Looks like you don't like the idea of someone liking Uncharted 3 more than Skyrim. Uncharted 3 is my personal GOTY, but I don't have a problem with anyone who prefers Skyrim over Uncharted 3 and I don't even care because I have my opinions and others have theirs. To each his own. You on the other hand seem to be the one who has a problem if someone thinks Uncharted 3 is GOTY. News flash, they have every right to think and say so.

chriski3334536d ago

modern warfare 3?........ hahahahaha yea right

Thatguy-3104536d ago

All I'm saying is that when it comes to VGA's Uncharted 3 won't win ....Believe me on that.

the story was really good, but the gameplay in uncharted 3 is just..WOW!. i think it can get goty. but to each there own...skyrim, uncharted 3, dark souls, deuse ex hr are so far my gotys

Veneno4536d ago

I Think Dark Souls will surprise many by taking Game of the Year honors from many places.

ChrisW4536d ago

Doesn't Minecraft have to exit beta in order to be eligable for GOTY?

dvfaa4536d ago

on friday its going to be released

Ezio20484536d ago

having played Portal 2, BAC, Dark Souls, UC3 & currently digging into Skyrim, my personal vote goes for UC3!!!
i agree it has not taken that big step what UC2 did in terms of action and storytellinjg, BUT it is certainly a great mixture of gameplay, graphics, story and voice acting.

DonaldBeck4536d ago

yeah, no game on earth is half as good as uncharted 3

Veneno4535d ago

Anyone that picks Portal 2 as their GOTY has the worst taste in games ever.

Tilian4536d ago (Edited 4536d ago )

Dark Souls baby, Dark Souls.

Portal 2 a close second.

For me.

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name34d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno34d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno34d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure33d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.

Minecraft Bedrock Introduces Official Add-Ons To Marketplace

Minecraft Bedrock is introducing add-ons to the marketplace. The add-ons can now be added to many existing and new worlds.

Jin_Sakai54d ago (Edited 54d ago )

Nice! Next up, shaders on consoles.

“A new update is improving how mods work for Minecraft Bedrock. Mojang has introduced add-ons to the marketplace.”

“These add-ons can now easily be added to new and existing worlds instead of being tied to a single world.
There are plenty of free and paid add-ons that will let you customize just about anything in your world.”

OtterX53d ago

So RayTracing is no longer locked to the NVIDIA maps? I know there was a workaround, but it will be nice to have easier access to all worlds.
