FPS Vs RPG's: Which Genre has the Greatest Games?

GamerFitNation's Gregory Laporte ask gamers which genre has the greatest games? Rpg's or Fps titles? "First Person Shooters are some of the most awe inspiring innovative titles ever created, RPG's are also some of the most time consuming but personally rewarding games in terms of story and combat. This brings us to the article that I am writing about today. FPS titles and RPG's have created waves of new ideas in gaming but, which has really created the greatest games?

RPGs are my pick as well.

I play FPSes sometimes cuz I play videogames... but RPGs are what got me hooked into playing videogames at all.

Skip_Bayless4543d ago

Life would be boring if one of the genres did not exist, but I must say in the modern day the FPS is dominant. I'm not a relic so I'm not going to back to the PS2,PS1, and SNES to play old games with visuals that don't stand up to today.

I don't think there's any way to really compare which has the better games.

What makes a great FPS isn't the same thing that makes a great RPG and vice versa.

HeavenlySnipes4543d ago

at least, that's how I approached the question. I saw it as "Which genre has the best games". My immediate response was RPG because my favourite games ever are RPGs (Chrono Cross and FFXII). Add to that the numerous well received RPGs like The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, most of the Final Fantasies, Dark/Demons Souls, Chrono series, Xenogears etc..

GameTavern4543d ago

You also get a ton of well-regarded FPSes as well.

And more often than not, you get something like Goldeneye, Halo and Modern Warfare which are seen as hallmark games that changed the industry.

For RPGs, I can only really think of Final Fantasy 7.

BitbyDeath4543d ago

@GameTavern
Don't forget Elder Scrolls

iamnsuperman4543d ago (Edited 4543d ago )

I personally not a fan of RPG so I would have to go with FPS even though FPS (to me) hasn't got the best games I have played. Its all about personal choice and preference.

off topic but I like the photo. Looks really good

you bring a lot of great titles that I haven't played in years relientk77. There are a lot of great series both past and present my only concern is why haven't we seen such greatness this gen. It seems like FPS titles are catching up in terms of quality and the experiences that they are providing.

There have been several great FPS titles this gen that are better than a lot RPG's this generation.

MariaHelFutura4543d ago

There has been some pretty good RPGs this gen

-Oblivion
-Skyrim
-Tales Of Vesperia
-Lost Oddessy
-Fallout 3
-Fallout:NV
-Mass Effect 1
-Demon Souls
-Dark Souls
-Final Fantasy Versus (looks to be amazing)
-Deus Ex

Thats pretty good.

Kalowest4543d ago

"It seems like FPS titles are catching up in terms of quality and the experiences that they are providing." Lmao, sorry i just had to laugh.

Nerdmaster4543d ago

@MariaHelFutura

I love RPG and hate FPS. But your post made me realize how the RPG genre has fallen this generation. I think the last great RPG I played was Final Fantasy X.

Capt-FuzzyPants4543d ago

You forgot kingdom hearts. But yea rpg's are definitely better then shooters

Pikajew4543d ago (Edited 4543d ago )

Zelda is not an RPG, it's an action adventure game. Just because they are long doesnt make them an RPG

I like JRPGs, turn based RPGs and some action RPGs. I usually get borde with shooters half way threw

The only shooters I actualy finnish are adventure shooters like Halflife and Metroid Prime

_Aarix_4543d ago

Zelda has health, currency for items an side quests.. Yea it's an rpg.

Capt-FuzzyPants4543d ago

@aarix

shooters have health and currency too.those aren't the elements that make up an rpg

_Aarix_4543d ago (Edited 4543d ago )

Zelda has had all of those before any shooter did. What exactly makes a rpg then that Zelda hasn't had for 30 years. Never mind the fact that that's it's official genre other than a puzzle/action game.

Recently, players of Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone were met with a new bundle featuring the B.E.A.S.T. Glove, inspired by King Kong's armament in the Godzilla x Kong movie. However, the $80 price tag attached to this themed accessory left many Call of Duty fans feeling underwhelmed.

Controversy in the COD community feels like it happens within an alternate timeline. Activision will take the piss with something, there will be a momentary fuss about it, and then they will forget about it and carry on anyway. Repeat this cycle literally every year for the rest of time.

Gridknac4d ago

They call that a crack head! Thats what this is really about, its an addiction. People who dont smoke cigarettes look and laugh at the addicts that spend $8-$10 a pack, but they cant help themselves, they are addicted. That same analogy applies perfectly to the whole MT industry. Only an addict that was not thinking clearly would spend this kind of money on something so frivolous. A round of multiplayer provides the same high a person gets from scratching a lotto ticket, or putting money on a sports bet. MT in general need to really be regulated because you have a generation of kids becoming adults who grew up only knowing the MT era of gaming. Its normal to them and they will in turn teach their kids the same by just being a gaming parent and getting their kids involved with them in gaming. Thats why no matter how ridiculous the headlines keep getting out of the MT industry, it never seems to fade or go away.

I'm so tired of hearing about what they're doing with this game, its never going to change and it's never going to value the consumer over money, furthermore the people who engage so heavily in the microtransactions I guess allegedly are having a blast and can't wait to do it some more this year when the new version of the game drops.

I'm Replaying Skyrim (again), and So Should You

Replaying Skyrim after 13 years is a reminder of the progress made in western RPGs over the last decade, but also what's been lost.

anast10d ago

I tried, but it's a poorly made game that insults its customers.

lucian22910d ago

nah, only mods make it decent, and even then it's bad, and this is after i modded for at least 3 years

Nittdarko10d ago

Funnily enough, I'm about to play it for the first time in VR with 1000 mods to make the game playable, as is the Bethesda way

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave10d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan10d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
