Battlefield 3 is easily the most important holiday release for Electronic Arts. All year the publisher has aggressively hyped the DICE-developed sequel as a Call of Duty-killer, and with Modern Warfare 3 still two weeks from release, EA has the vital first-to-market advantage.Unfortunately, a host of technical shortcomings and a disappointing overall package make Battlefield 3 not only one of the biggest blunders of 2011, but it also positions rival Activision Blizzard’s upcoming blockbuster to be the clear winner of the first-person-shooter fight that, ironically, EA picked.

Well yes, the multiplayer alone is worth more than 90, but it balances out against the less than great co-op and campaign. Personally I have no intention of playing single player or co-op but I understand that reviewers have to take into account the complete package.

Apparently the author and even a lot of you guys failed to read battlelog, the site actually told users of server maintenance down time that will affect all platforms. And I have no where near the trouble knifing someone that I had in the beta. It works perfect. I have no idea what this author is talking about.

Yeah... he is one of those punks who work their tail off to get a aircraft just to ditch it and deprive the entire team of a vital component to counter air threats. I hate these people more than any FPS annoyance. And idiots like this often fail to destroy the aircraft, thus resulting in the enemy capturing it. I snatched a viper yesterday because some punk on the opposite team tried this crap. It was HELL unleashed for the attackers. I have air to air missiles unlocked, so poping the A-10 out if the sky rendered their attack limited to a beach head assault.

He mentioned being "outgunned" when starting out fresh a week after release, but he didn't mention anything about how the MP scoring rewards teamwork and support actions like placing mines to take out vehicles, healing teammates and such. I thought that one of the draws to the B3 MP section was that you can be important to your team and help win the match even without huge kill streaks if you are helping in other ways.

What I find sad is that people are so easily satisfied with the same thing over and over just as long as it looks pretty and has marketing dollars behind it. This game might be the most overrated game of the year. It's nothing more than BC2.5 with prone and more vehicles.

the new lightengine alone makes up for some completly new gameplay approach.

sorry i play bf since 1942 beta (2002) and every bf game was different.
just because you have a battlefield (vehicles etc.) doesnt make it the same game.

its the core of this franchise ....

Yeh BF3 is way better than BF2 and Hell NO BF3 is not like BC2.

I've been Battlefield since 1942 and i am very happy with BF3.

a few bugs here and there and some needed tweaks but those will ironed out in the next patch.

GOTY contender for sure along with Portal 2 and The Witcher 2!

I too have been playing BF since BF1942 and each one has been different but I'm sorry, there is very little difference from BC2. The graphics are better but that doesn't change much in terms of gameplay. You may want to argue that it does but the instances where it does change things are so few and far between that it's moot. The game types are the same, the physics for the grenades are the same(they float like wadded up paper balls- just like BC2), the destruction is probably even less than BC2...I fail to see what is soooo different from BC2 other than the ability to go prone, some more vehicles, and better graphics.

Have people become such graphics whores that they don't care that the game is basically the same? Are people influenced by marketing dollars so much that their opinions are molded by corporations? Are people so easily entertained that they can do the same thing over and over and not care if anything new or innovative is implemented?

This is the first BF game I've been really disappointed with not including Vietnam(never played that one). If they expect me to spend $60 for a game, I want a new game with fresh ideas and new game modes. Not something they did a couple years ago.

^ I'd say it's more of a mix between BC2 and BF2 with a tiny bit of 1942 and 2142 thrown in here and there...

Anyways, you should try playing it more. I was a little bit disappointed at the very beginning too but once I got into it I had a magical time...

I can't tell the difference in MP between BF3 and BC2, they feel the same, and in Xbox the MP graphics is a bit worse than BC2 including smaller maps in team deathmatch mode which ironically feels like MoH MP.

So the review merits the few surprises in MP.
