The Best Video Games To Play On Halloween

UGO: Halloween is slowly closing in and we at UGO hope you’re getting ready to celebrate. On October 31st, you’ll have the chance to roam the streets dressed as any kind of crazy creature or character you can image, annoy your neighbors and be rewarded with mountains of free candy. In the process you can boast and show those elementary school kids how to trick-or-treat like a boss. Try this any other day of the year and we’re fairly certain you’re going to end up behind bars. In the event you’re too cool (or lazy) to dress up and venture out into diabetes paradise, you can always escape reality the same legal way you usually do: playing a video game. From the Playstation 2 to the Xbox 360, the horror-laced holiday has haunted many consoles for your enjoyment. To stay true to the Halloween spirit, here are the best video games to play on Halloween.

Think I'm gonna play a little Silent Hill 2 this Halloween

CrescentFang4572d ago

Ah, The nightmare Before Christmas Oogie's Revenge. Developed by Capcom (at least the time when they were liked). It used the DMC (3?) battle system, but it was dumbed down and was a little awkward, but fun to play (it also has a music rhythm minigames for some boss fights). Fun nonetheless and cheat codes to unlock stuff, like costumes. (I don't think there were any game breaking cheat codes. I think they had the unlocking cheat codes for those unskilled to get them.)
The game isn't the best (which may frustrate you since the level design and battle system weren't polish and you would question who could get a S rank on each level), but it was fun.

Kakihara4572d ago

If I get stood up by my friends and don't get invited to a party it's gonna be Batman Arkham city for me (if I havent already played the crap out of it) after reading Batman-the long Halloween and maybe Grant Morrison's Arkham Asylum. Not technically horror but gothic and creepy enough that I think it's alright. I'm actually kinda hoping I get stood up, I dont know if that makes me even sadder than I think I am but screw it.

Most Offensive Video Games That Would Never Cut It Today

Times are changing, and these games would have never been made in today's climate.

Every single time someone uses this phrase whether it's music, movies, books, comics, video games, etc it's always the same claim.

The ubiquitous "they" won't allow it to be made. And every decade these claims are made the claimant completely ignores all the "offensive" material that is published when the claim is made.

In ten years, you can write a new article about how you can't make games like Helldivers 2, Resident Evil VIII, Mortal Kombat I, Dragon's Dogma 2, Alan Wake 2 etc etc etc any more.

MrBaskerville34d ago

Yeah, people wouldn't be constantly outraged if there weren't games that people found enraging. The whole SBI discourse shit wouldn't be a thing if all games were inoffensive. A game like Starfield can make a guy froth at his mouth, so there will always be room for a list like this.

0hMyGandhi34d ago

Normally, I'd be inclined to agree with you, but there are massive caveats.
TV shows like Venture Bros, Ren and Stimpy, and Aqua Team wouldn't/couldn't be made today. Hell, Ren and Stimpy was a *children's* show, same thing with Rocko's Modern Life.

It's not for some arbitrary reason, either. It's branding and IP alignment. Companies are far more risk-averse than they were when I was kid in the 90's. Of course, you have companies coming out of the woodwork to hell spur on similar content, but remember: Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon and some incredibly provocative material.

And for movies? it's pretty obvious. American Pie/Wedding Crashers/Eurotrip among many other "raunch coms" have fallen out of style, and are absolutely outside what the modern day film industry is willing to stand by.
Ace Ventura 1 and 2, Dumb and Dumber, Freddy Got Fingered, Rat Race, Harold and Kumar, and Van Wilder follow suit.

Remember: I am not explicitly talking about films put onto streamers. I am talking wide-releases in actual theaters. Same thing goes for games: Carmageddon, Duke Nukem, Manhunt, Six Days In Fallujah (with their original concept), Hatred, and so on and so forth. Of course, I'd be inclined to mention most tactical shooters like Rainbow Six and Joint Ops as well, due to cultural sensitivity regarding *who* you are shooting and why.

And not all of it is bad (obviously). Tastes change, and perspectives change to fit the demographic.
I should add that I'm a lefty, living in L.A. Working in film.

thorstein34d ago

The Boys, Invincible, Jojo Rabbit, Deadpool, Gen V, Last of Us, Banshee... There are plenty of media being made today that people will claim "can't be made today".

Profchaos34d ago

Yeah but if you consider manhunt which was basically a snuff film could you seriously make that game with high than PS2 era graphics.

thorstein33d ago

The Outlast Trials just came out.

But the storyline of Manhunt was that you were executed. But then lived. And if you didn't do as you were told, you'd die. And the people you killed were not innocents.

It was all filmed by a psychopath.

As we speak GTA VI is being finished up for a release. You get to play a Bonnie and Clyde type of protagonist who run up against the law.

Bodycam looks so real.

People are making those games. Articles like this will always exist no matter how incorrect they are, no matter how many times they blame "them" for whatever it is "they" do to prevent "those" games from being made.

Number1TailzFan34d ago

The UK is the biggest junk country pandering to that nonsense as well, with laws against free speech and expression to match. It got so bad even Rowan Atkinson made a video on free speech about it.

Now the UK raises the age rating on harmless films like Mary Poppins, it's just a load of pansy weak ass nonsense.

MrDead34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

The right wing Tories have been in power in the UK for the 14 years you know the ones that are "anti-woke", blame them for your perceptions.

Killer2020UK34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

Are these snowflakes in the room with us now?

This is more faux outrage designed to get hits. The consequences are unfortunately creating hysteria amongst those willing to buy into it and blame "them" or "the left" or "liberals" meanwhile the left are kicking off about genocide, actual real world abhorrent acts. Nobody is campaigning to censor this shit.

Huey_My_D_Long34d ago

Not too mention the fact that some of these game are controversial for you know, underage porn and encouraging rape.

So either the guy just came in to comment snowflakes without reading anything, or he is calling people snowflakes for having a problem with said titles. Crazy how much brain rot someone can have.

banger8835d ago

Dead Island: "The early PC version of the zombie game swapped the playable character Purna’s Gender Wars skill with a prototype name, which shouldn’t be mentioned directly. The skill name made fun of both Purna as a character and feminists."

"Feminist Whore" lmao

gold_drake34d ago

ill add one more to the list.
drakengard 1.

its ridiculous tho, especially since they'd still be able to find their place in alot of places in the world. except america of course ha. and maybe Australia.

ppl are so sensitive these days. ha. but it is what it is.

Barlos34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

They're not offensive.

And we need another Fat Princess. Fantastic little game!

Some people just have no sense of humour if this sort of thing offends them. They need to lighten up and stop taking themselves so seriously.

Deeeeznuuuts34d ago

Would love a new fat princess game 🤟

CantThinkOfAUsername34d ago

Games literally about sexual assault, mass genocide, bombing civilians, and school shooting. None of which is satirical.

isarai34d ago

Actually it's about fat princesses

Huey_My_D_Long34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

Its crazy that people are fixated on Fat princess when clearly the list is going over controversies, and not all of them are equal. Like way worse examples but pretend the entire list is like that.

Kingdom Hearts Is Too Hard To Get Into

Trying to break into Kingdom Hearts is a nightmare.

wwinterj111d ago

Play the first game. That is a simple enough story to get into the series.

Crows90111d ago

Was going to say the same. It's really not hard to get into.

Hofstaderman111d ago

My advice; play the games in release order. Alot of people say story chronological order but that can be really confusing. Trust me.

Inverno111d ago

Read the manga, story makes more sense there.

-Gespenst-111d ago (Edited 111d ago )

I think a problem that SE is going to run into (or already has run into) with this series is that a lot of the people still following it were kids / teens when they played the first one, and are now much older. I know I'm finding it increasingly hard to tolerate the childishness of some of the stuff in these games, and I'm sure there are plenty of original players who have since just stopped following the series for this reason. I can't count the number of times I was playing KH3 and just feeling like, "What the f*** am I doing?"

SE can keep the series PG-13, and try to get a new audience of kids, but how do they intend to get kids into a series with a story that has been expanding since 2002, and over the course of like a dozen games? Especially when there are already loads of newer franchises out there that have already pretty much cornered the kids / teens market.

Honestly, I think they should either end the series once and for all, or take it in a more mature direction, and ditch the Disney stuff (I know, unpopular opinion, probably). It is a series that hasn't really grown with its audience, I feel. Alternatively, they could try to steer it in a more all-ages Studio Ghibli direction, sort of like Final Fantasy.

banger88111d ago

I felt this way with KH3 as well, ended up dropping it around half way through. I won't even bother with KH4.

CS7110d ago

Same here. Kingdom Hearts 3’s dialog was way to childish for me and I only played just to finish the story and wrap up the near 15 year wait.

I doubt I would be buying any other games unless they go in a more mature (all-ages) direction as OP said.

jambola110d ago

It doesn't help with Sora's loud stretched out constant yelling either

smashman98111d ago

you gotta remember Disney has to sign off on everything they do with KH. Disney is super protective of their IP,

Either way I don't disagree with you on a lot of this stuff becoming more and more of an issue. But it's okay that fans grow out of things like this. But if they do decide to keep it more for the young audience then they will have to solve the problem that the article mentions.

-Gespenst-110d ago

Yeah, I just don't know what they could do to get all the kids invested in it at this stage. The only thing I can think of is a total reboot, but that would be an enormous project, and they clearly have no intention of doing it. I mean, the series has just embarked upon another "saga", which, if it's anything like the last "saga", will take another 2 decades to complete, will consist of 6+ games, and will convolute the overall narrative even further (if that's even possible). It seems to me that, if this is SE's plan, and if they want people to still care about the series in 5-6 years time, then their only real option is to try to appeal more to a non-adolescent audience. Otherwise, the kids won't care because they won't have a clue what's going on, and the adults won't care because the series is too childish.

Having said all that, the Yozora stuff, and the footage we've seen from KH4, does seem to MAYBE indicate that the series is going in the direction I'm talking about, but it's too early to say for sure. KH4 might look completely different the next time we see it, knowing SE.

Crows90111d ago

Kingdom hearts 3 is horrible ..that's why you felt that way. It's the worst in the series by far.

FinalFantasyFanatic111d ago

My issue is with the decline of the writing which has been an issue for Square-Enix games across the board. KH3 should have gone out with a bang and felt very satisfying, but instead it was like a wet tissue and left feeling like I missed a lot of content. Having said that, KH3 was probably the last KH game I'll purchase.

Rainbowcookie110d ago

Im playing 3 as my first one and I got that same feeling. Enjoying the variety and combat but im not into the story...too confusing.

GoodGuy09111d ago

Indeed. If you wanna give it a try, just go with 1-3. The other games are unfortunately needed to know but you can just youtube all the cutscenes by order of release of each game.

Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare Used To Be A Gold Standard For DLC

Undead are the peace makers.

"Used To Be A Gold Standard"

And every access game journo helped lower this standard.

isarai188d ago

Seriously, like even to the point of criticizing a game for being complete out the box and not dropping microtransactions on a storefront every month. Outlets were really out here mad that Hogwarts Legacy was finished and didn't need any battle pass, or "seasons" of DLC. So brainwashed they don't even know how to handle a game with an actual ending.

anast188d ago

For sure, and don't forget how "BG3 shouldn't be a new standard".

Cacabunga188d ago

RDR online is also a great deal

188d ago
porkChop188d ago

The first time I felt like a game got DLC right was Borderlands 1. $10 for hours of content.

isarai188d ago

I paid $5 for Sleeping dogs DLC that added an entire campaign, new fighting styles and weapons, and basically turned the whole City into a zombie survival thing. Then another $5 for a full kickass tournament parading game of death which added an island, and lots of new fighting styles

Soy188d ago

Fallout 3, Mass Effect 2 & 3, Borderlands 1 & 2, GTA IV - those are my gold standards of DLC.

-Foxtrot188d ago

Something they couldn’t even give us in GTAV or RDR2

I honestly thought we’d get some Alien type of DLC for one of them at least
