Resistance 3 first month sales revealed

Resistance 3 was undoubtedly one of the most anticipated PS3 exclusives releases of this year, with many saying it being the last PS3 exclusive title by Insomniac, who’s since then signed a deal with EA. However, its first month sales figures are shocking to say the least, at least in the U.S.

I think Insomniac screwed up w/ the direction they took R2 which hurt R3, Sony didn't advertise it enough and when they did it was all about the PSMove. Plus there are sooooooooooooooooooooooooo many games coming out in the next month its beyond ridiculous. All of this, led to this.

I think R2 left a sour taste in peoples mouths and with so many shooters coming out they seem to have chosen to pass R3 up. It's too bad because it's the campaign I've played all year.

I agree on the marketing by Sony with Resistance 3. I wished they would have another commercial showcasing the game besides JUST the Kevin Butler one with the sharpshooter. That's prolly the only commerical I know of that advertised Resistance 3. It's such a shame, I had so much fun with this game, prolly the best resistance game I've played yet. Only Resistance where I liked both the multi and story modes as well.

I agree. The Kevin Butler ads for individual games have frankly got to go. He was great for advertising the console, but when it comes to trying to sell viewers an individual game, just show the game. Most of the commercials devolved into Kevin Butler's talking head just spewing words out at the viewer and not enough of showing the game in a stylish manner. Compare the Gears 3 commercial to the Resistance 3 commercial, they're polar opposites. Gears 3's commercial shows the game and the carnage you can expect to encounter while playing it while juxtaposing it with that classical-style, slower-paced, emotional-type music. The Resistance 3 commercial hardly shows the game or the experience of being in the game at all and instead shows the totally non-warlike faces of Kevin Butler and a pile of gamers as KB talks vaguely about gaming in general and not even terribly specifically about what it's like to play the game he's marketing. His voiceover is energy over a picture of nothing, while the Gears commercial is a picture of energy over dulcet tones for sound. One of them engages the viewer and makes them think "That's a world I want to delve into" and the other one makes the viewer go "But what's the game like?"

The online pass made me rent instead of buy. If i couldve demo'd the multi to see if i like it and if theres a decent community i wouldve. I said screw it, il just play the campaign which ROCKED btw. A few things couldve changed my mind like if it had a survival mode, offline bots, and 8 player co-op. I dont buy alot of new games so they need longevity which r3 doesnt have. Its a damn good campaign though.

Idk why some games sell and others dont? I know my reasons for passing but i still played it day 1. Its not marketing because i saw more r3 ads than gears 3 ads. R3 ads were all over tv, the budle ads, youtube ads, ads on game sites, demos/betas, sony went all out.

PS3 Owners didn't appreciate the LOW DEF , backwards 3d technology of this game.
THEY should of Licensed Unreal Engine or some Engine!!hopefully they have learned a lesson, and don't bite off more than they can chew or try to sell sub par technology with a same story eerie quieriee story line.

It was the first really big game of the holiday season and I don't think there was enough incentive to buy it straight off the gun when compared to other releases.

Add to that a poor reaction to the beta, news of 1.2GB of patches over the first 2 days of release and a general tiredness of the brand and it's no surprise people are waiting for a price drop - sales will definitely go up closer to/after Christmas.

It's a shame because it really was a good game.

But he is right there are a core 500,000 fans that will wait till it gets really cheap before laying the cash down because they are no longer exclusive devs.

People also have to remember the demographic is different on ps3 alot more 25+ year olds who buy a month after 2 months after, this will have legs.

At the end of the day, this is business, this is people's lives. With sales as atrocious as this, can you blame Insomniac for going multiplatform? Just look at when Bungie left the Halo franchise to go multiplatform, there was some hysteria surrounding the topic but that was short lived and Xbox 360 owners still purchased Reach, in fact, Pre-Orders alone where over 10 times as much as the first month US sales where for Resistance 3.

I still think Resistance: FOM is the best out of them all. But yeah, even with it's flaws, Resistance 3 is a great game and Insomniac deserved much better than this, especially after everything they have done for Sony and the PS3 this gen.

Well it did give it a nice boost it was #1 on the PS3 charts when it came out. It was #7 over all too. How is that a flop? Does this mean nothing below the top three are successful? I didn't buy it because it's just another shooter. I preferred ICO collection which is one of its kind. Multiplayer beta was a huge disappointment and singleplayer demo was quite ok but subHD graphics is not what I expect from a PS3 exclusive.

With Resistance 3 coming out (Despite it being the best since the last 2 installments) it couldn't reach its goal in terms of popularity or the "Must Have Game", even with positive reviews PS3 owners just passed on it. Sony didn't market the game enough. As crazy as it may sound Sony should have released the game during the holidays and plugged the game a little more with more ads and commercials here in the states. On a side note the graphics are absolutely stunning!

@Xero - They did a commercial for the kick off of the NFL season during some game but I forgot who were playing so they have already marketed it to a big audience.

Plus they are doing that AMC promotion where people can play it on the big screen and get a copy early. Albeit that's for a very few select theaters.

1 week after release I saw 5 preowned copies at my local GameStop which was a bit surprising for a game to be traded in that early. Im sure its not a bad game but after playing the demo it put me off big time I couldnt get over how bad the graphics were especially in 3D

My local Gamestop has exactly ZERO used copies. Cool story bro. The graphics and effects in the UK demo are good. You either never played it, are confusing it with the old BattleLA 2010 demo build, or think everything should look like Uncharted.

Some games burn slow. Look at Demon's Souls, not exactly a graphics killer either. Game took forever just to pass 1 million, but it got there. Crackdown 2 has yet to even hit that mark. It happens.

That probably means about 300-350K copies WW. That's not great, but then... the holidays aren't over.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it hit 1 million WW by early next year, and since sequels have far less investment than original IPs, that probably doesn't qualify as a "flop" at all.

you can't trust vgchartz. According to them ps3 sold 260k for september then few days later NPD results says ps3 sold 376k. And then they overtrackted the 3ds by over 100k. So in general they're numbers are off

It's a pity, considering the franchise is one of the biggest hitters of the PS3. Now it's supposed "best" is barely doing 10% of it's predecessors. Added to that, even Eurogamer stated the game's resolution is very low compared to most standard games. Even the negative reactions the single-player beta was beyond damaging to say the least.

I think the fault lies with the devs themselves, they should'nt have released poorly represented betas as many consumers could easily place this below their priority lists when expected games start releasing in the same time frame. Did anyone remember of a Dead Island beta? Neither did I, but since there was no pre-conceived judgment beforehand not to mention the infamous trailer. It's no wonder why the sales are exactly the way they are.

well these numbers will not go over well with Sony Game Division investors. Just about every ps3 exclusive released tis year under performed in sales. I think next year 2012 Sony wil take a different approach and cut back the number of exclusives to release.

Uhhh, you realise that Sony's exclusives like KZ3 have outsold pretty much all of their multiplats this year, right? Why would investors be upset when they're getting their returns?

Go check out some NPD or vgchatz estimates. Big names like Crysis 2 (740,000), Deus Ex (490,000), Mass Effect 2 (600,000), Portal 2 (900,000), Dead Space 2 (900,000), Driver San Francisco (190,000) sold on PS3 worldwide. R3 is half way to Dead Space already. People's goalposts for what constitutes a flop and a hit should change DRAMATICALLY after looking at what multiplats do on a platform by platform basis, not just the NPD that lumps all systems sales together. Dark Souls PS3 for example is all that's keeping that title alive, outselling the 360 copy like 5-1.

Too much emphasis on exclusive sales when multiplats by in large have done far less on a console by console basis this year without bloggers batting so much as an eyelash.

I agree with your statement of other exclusives making bigger hype then R3 (Uncharted 3) or the series in general. Resistance has always been on the somewhat lower side of big AAA titles. Sony has so many exclusives this year alone it's hard to justify marketing R3 heavily and even if it was, people are saving money for other holiday releases. It also had competition as people were going bat shit crazy over Dead Island and Gears 3 which released shortly after. I completely agree with the hype statement, although that does not validate that the series is getting "stale" by any means. It just means that it was eclipsed by other releases that month and incoming holiday titles. =)

I really didn't see or feel any hype for this game. Resistance 2 was such a turd compared to the first one, I personally didn't care less about R3. It looked like they overhauled the graphics compared to R2, but I've never been a graphics persons, so oh well.

The only thing I'd add to this is that these number only count the retail copy of the game. What it's not counting is the number of Sharpshooter packs that came bundled with the game. All the media I saw about this game surrounded the PS Move capabilities. Those packs were expensive. So we really don't know how many were actually sold, or how much Sony actually made since it's not factoring in the sales of these sharpshooters. TBH, it was only when considering picking up this pack that I even considered jumping into R3. Who knows how many gamers actually took the Sharpshooter plunge and their numbers just aren't being represented in the NPD.

And if those Sharpshooter packs are being represented in these NPD numbers, then man did this series fall off the planet in the US.

I just don't think the franchise ever really got it's fair shake. Thou, I also don't think it should be matched up against say a Halo like game. This did it's own thing but I always felt like Sony wanted to push this as their Halo instead of Killzone. Marketing could have drawn people to this game but, they never built it up. Dead Island had been built up and built up so when it finally came out people went crazy, do I think it deserves it's place? Hell no, I still look at Dead Island as nothing more than L4D:Open World. But I can't deny that they made me kinda wanna play the game. Sony, didn't make me wanna play Resistance. They did grab my attention and say hay screw those other game, play this game it's awesome. This is pretty easy to see why Resistance 3 sales flopped.

First, I think a lot of PS3 owners are X360 owners as well. It came out the same month as Gears 3 and most of them chose Gears 3.

Also, with released of Battlefield 3 and MW3 on the horizon, most PS3 gamers are putting their money aside for those hyped and well known franchises.

I might pick this game up once it hit the $20 bargain bin.

Someone else mentioned it but it's a great point. Look at what most multiplats do on their individual consoles week 1, month 1 and you'll see "bombs" (by the standards in this thread) everywhere...only saved when PS3/360/PC sales are all lumped together.

Odd how there were no Portal2/Dead Space2/Deus Ex flopped articles when those titles did 500-600,000 in their first month on PS3 too despite being the highest rated multiplats this year. None have passed 1 million on the PS3...yet people expect every exclusive to sell 1-2 million right away? Where's the logic?

I bought Resistance 2 and 3 and the fact is that they are just not that great. FPS is the most popular genre this gen and the Resistance series has always struggled to be noticed in this very crowded market regardless of the fact that it is an exclusive.

I find the KZ series far more appealing than the Resistance series and I feel that it is justified that KZ is seen as the premeire PS3 exclusive FPS series.

Why does a game reaching 3 million sales mean so much to you? However as it seems to what about Heavy Rain, Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Gran Turismo 5? Those are the high selling well reviewed exclusives that I can think of and all very different games at that(I'm also pretty sure that both MGS4 and GT5 have outsold all the games you mentioned), there are also loads of great games that sell sufficiently just not in the multi-millions, then there's the multiplats - FIFA, COD, GTA, RDR have all outsold the 3 games/ series you mentioned, I'm confident that there are more but I just can't think of them right now off the top of my head.

The problem with the Resistance series is that they never really stood out from the rest of the FPS games out there. The first had a really cool coop mode that made the game for many people. The second had a better story but everything else was worse. By the time the third one rolled around, people had either given up on the series or just don't care. If you are going to make an FPS game, then it better be damn unique or have some mechanics that make it stand out from the rest. Resistance has neither of these and in the current economy, it died a tragic death.

Its somewhat a sameful that Sony left this out to dry but my understanding is that PS3 games generally sell well on their own merits! Resistance 3 sold more than R:FOM did in its first month in the US and that game went on to sell 4 million... R2 sold about the same in its first one and sits comfortably at 2 million! Resistance 3 will still pull out and sit well! most people just didn't have time to play the game so running out at launch isn't feasible!

Halo's numbers have gone down since Halo 3 as well, this is hardly an uncommon occurance exclusive to Resistance.ODST sold less than half of what Halo 3 did and Halo Wars sold even less. It happens as more games come out to choose from. Happened to Crackdown, happened to Fable, happened to Resistance.

I wouldn't go so far as saying a house divided, I mean I only have so much money to go around. I bought R3 at launch, but I only just got GT5 and it's almost a year old. Sometimes things get bumped. Same thing will probably happen to Ratchet&Clank next week. With new inFamous DLC, a free to play DC Universe, Payday:The Heist and a new Batman coming out in the next 2 weeks...day one doesn't mean as much to me as it used to.

Is it too late to support it though? Is the game off of store shelves? It'll still be there to buy in 6 months. Release dates are just when the games come out, but not necessarily when people will buy them. KZ2 tripled what LBP did in its first week, but LBP outsold KZ2 lifetime.

Ultimately I can only speak for myself, but as an example I only *just* bought GT5, almost a year after launch for the new $39.99 price tag. I only just bought Splinter Cell Conviction, and it was used so it won't even count as a sale for Ubisoft.

I can't support these companies like sports teams, it's too expensive. That's why I won't be buying Ratchet&Clank next week either. I bought Resistance 3, the GOW Origins Collection, the Ico Collection and SC Conviction last month. Just bought Crysis for another $20 and GT5 for $40. My bubble's burst. Even Batman has to wait. *shrugs*

Could R3 have sold more? Sure. It has a great campaign and critics pretty much agree it's the best Resistance to date. It has what it takes to sell. Whether people are just broke like me and forced to cut back, I have no clue. You'd have to ask someone who didn't buy it.

There are times when I wished Resistance series was multiplatform instead of PS3 exclusive. The Resistance games are some of the most fun games I've played in my life, I think it deserves to be expanded.

I got Resistance3 last week, and I beat it within 3 days, it was an epic experience.

For those who love the resistance series, go on youtube and type in xtheaveragegamersx, and look for the channel. I don't mean to advertise this yt channel but I'm just saying that xtagx is a hardcore Resistance fan community. We even plan on doing Resistance 1 game night tournaments with prizes. Its a channel dedicated to games that deserve more attention than they're getting..

I had more fun in the beta after the kinks were worked out. I dont have the time to sit and grind out the ranks to unlock some of the weapons and perks and the COD mentality runs rampant through most of the games I have played so there is little use for ammo/healing etc...just spam spotter and let others rank up for you.

I wish they would have taken the glare off of some of the maps, in certain spots it looks absolutely ridiculous with the way they changed up trainyard. I understand for the sniping aspect to discourage spawn sniping but I cant see the need to have it so bright.

I really wish they would have thrown a day/night option into the game, to allow all maps to be cycled through different times. More games need to exploit that feature, it adds a whole new element to a map and can make it play like a brand new map in some cases.

I can't see how people didn't enjoy this game. The story was food... in fact the Resistance franchise has one of the best story arcs for FPS games. The gameplay was not only good, but fun. I couldn't put the game down after the first 20 minutes. I finished it in one sitting, and intend to replay.

I hope its a slow burner, and that the Worldwide sales tells a different story.
