Gears of War 3 – Game of the Year contender?

Lately there has been an explosion (literally) of shoot ‘em up games. With countless amounts of Call of Duty games spamming shelves and many more in between, it’s hard for a FPS shooter game to really stand out of the crowd. That is why Gears of War 3 really took gamers by surprise.

Not in my book, but we all have different tastes. Dark Souls, Uncharted 3 (assuming it is as good as 2), Skyrim (again, if it is good), and Dues Ex would all be on my list. That is just off the top of my head though.

Is this a joke? What exactly would it win for?

Best story? Uncharted 3
Best graphics? Uncharted 3, Killzone 3, or Battlefield 3 (on PC)
Best sound? Killzone 3 or Battlefield 3 (on PC)
Best RPG? Skyrim
Best FPS? Battlefield 3
Best multiplayer? Battlefield 3
Best overall? Uncharted 3 or Skyrim

This is how it will all go down. What will Gears of War 3 win when it does nothing to be different? I honestly had more fun with Warhammer: Space Marine.

Don't forget there are many sites/magazines that hand out GOTY awards. So no doubt Gears 3 will win some. I don't think it will win the Spike GOTY though, if thats what everyone is talking about.

After playing Gears I can honestly say its a fantastic game, single and multi. So I think it def deserves be in the running.

but so is Lbp2/KZ3/Inf2/P2/skyrim/batman :ac and of course uncharted 3

Deus Ex, Forza Motorsport 4 and Battlefield 3 could also be in the race.

Agreed. That's a lot of competition. BF3, Uncharted 3 and Skyrim are the favourites.

As far as single player goes, Uncharted 3 should be able to sweep the award. I have confidence in ND that they will deliver a stellar story to end the trilogy.

As far as a complete package goes, GoW is definitely a strong contender; decent story with 4 player CO-OP, great MP with competitive as well as Horde and Beast Mode.

From a purely MP perspective- BF3 might still win it contrary to the impression the BETA has given us.

It is a great year for gaming- just not for our wallets.

@ Septic, the Uncharted series is not a trilogy. Each game stands on it's own, kinda like Indiana Jones movies.

I agree with all your choices except KZ3 and LBP2. I think InFamous 2 could be a contender, but I also feel Gears 3 is as well, but I don’t feel KZ3 or LBP2 are serious contenders. Of course this is just my opinion and I am in no way trying to suggest I’m right and you’re wrong (I just want to make that clear especially on this site). I do however agree with you 195% about InFamous 2, and don’t know why this game isn’t mentioned more often in GOTY articles. I love the mission building in InFamous 2 though, I hope more game do something like this in the future. To me it’s just as fun to play others levels as it is to make my own. It really made that game stand out IMO. I just can’t believe the vast number of quality titles coming out years. No matter what system you own, or what kind of games you like there seems to be something for everyone this year, and a serious exclusive GOTY contender on every system, not to mention a number of multiplat contenders. I remember this time 3 years ago I was waiting for good games to come out ( I buy a lot of games, and would beat them faster than they were coming out), now I can’t afford the price nor do I have the time for all the good titles coming out. It’s the one downside of owning all the systems, but a problem I really don’t mind having. I know the 2 games I am anticipating the most are Skyrim, and Skyward Sword. If they are half as fun as I think they will be those would be my personal G’sOTY, but I love Gears 3, and Batman AC and UC3 are on the same level as far as anticipation goes.

Any who back on topic, yes Gears 3 is a GOTY contender. It’s an excellent game on and offline.

How is no one mentioning Skyward Sword? That game is crazy anticipated on the interwebs. You may get a sleeper GOTY this year.

It's definitely a contender. Not too often does a game come around with such a great online function and also offer an equal or better campaign/story.

i think winning GOTY this year is going to be difficult with all the great games already released as well as the ones still to come.

I believe GOTY will go to a "fresher", probably multiplat, game, likely Skyrim or BF3.

Gears, Uncharted and the like are outstanding games, no doubt worthy of any award they receive, yet they don't feel as fresh as some other brands, just to familiar IMO to win the top honours.

I am absolutely loving Gears 3 and it is easily the best multiplayer shooter this gen so far, and it goes without saying that it should be a serious contender for GOTY, but I'm hoping GOTY goes to Forza 4 because it has truly and resoundingly upstaged all competition in it's genre in a manner not seen in other genres, and therefore deserves that little bit more than just the title of best racing sim/ game this gen.

It will be difficult this year. So many great titles and upcoming ones before years end. Portal 2 for example is a GOTY contender because its so different from most other games out. The reviews also for the game were stellar. 95% overall ay metacritic.

Well you are a clown, and clowns do laugh a lot, and do completely ridiculous stuff. For example they would laugh at a game they have clearly not played when it’s said to be a GOTY contender. I say a game you haven’t played, because if you would have played it you would know without a doubt it is GOTY material without a doubt, its polished SP and bar setting MP, IMO, is the best I’ve played this year so far. You may not like it, but to act like it being a GOTY contender is laughable definitely has you living up to your name…clown.

Definitely a contender, but for me I don't see how anything will beat Arkham City this year, and I was really hoping for Assassin's Creed to pull one over everyone.

Uncharted 3, while it will still be brilliant, will most probably be unable to attain the impossible expectations everyone will have of it. Uncharted 2's success will be 3's undoing as far as GOTY goes.

Skyrim will most likely be too buggy

For me, the only other title that could compete against Arkham City will be Portal 2.

Whichever game wins it though, isn't it awesome how many great titles are vying for this year's honours? Makes me all warm and fuzzy on the inside
