Atlus extends online server support for Demon's Souls into 2012

Atlus today announced plans to again extend its online server support for the award-winning hardcore multiplayer action RPG Demon's Souls for PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system, ensuring that the game's acclaimed online functionality is available into 2012.

Same here, though I have to admit that I disable my network connection before I play it. Nothing like trying to farm when black phantoms appear, cool aspect, but very annoying.

Atlus has nothing to do with Dark Souls, just Demon Souls. Bandai Namco is the new publisher for Dark Souls (created by From Software) just FYI :)

They said in FF X that the land of Spira is a spiral of death.

However when you have a game so difficult one of the only ways to reclaim your soul is to kill a giant demon where the odds are you will die again or to kill someone else and take their soul.

So I have to say that Demons Soul's itself is a spiral of death.

Now, I REALLY don't have a better example of a true reminiscent developer/publisher from the days where to be a game developer/pub was to care about the fun you promote to gamers, and not just profit (yes EA, in case you STILL don't get it, you're that example..).

Dark Souls is so pre-ordered right now, even though I bought Demon's only 1 month ago and enjoying every single death on it.

Now that's funny how one enjoys much more be killed hundreads of times in Demon's than to feel the blend hero killing'em all on (let's see..) DA2.

I really don't get why people are praising them for saying something like this.

It implies that no other game that has had DLC is "complete". Well games like Borderlands, Fallout 3, Oblivion, Red Dead Redemption, Fallout New Vegas all felt 'complete' to me without the DLC. I got tons of hours of enjoyment out of those games WITHOUT the DLC and felt that every penny I spent on those games was well placed, even feeling like I got MORE than my moneys worth.

So the Dark Souls devs say their game is "complete" and doesn't "need" DLC. Fine, that's probably true, but why do people act like they're the saviors of gaming? Some of those open world games I mentioned will probably have way more content (excluding DLC) than Dark Souls, yet they had DLC that extended the game.

Is it just because you people are spoiled and cheap that you expect everything to be handed to you for free? Do you believe that if DLC is announced for any title, you feel that you are somehow entitled to even more content without paying for it or feel you are somehow required to purchase it? Because you don't have to purchase it if you don't want to, and games like those already have enough content as is and are worth every penny of their original full price tags.

I'm guessing that knowing about the lack of DLC for this game simply gives most people comfort in knowing that they will only end up paying the $65 dollar price tag. Comfortable in that they wont be tempted to pay something extra down the line to extend their already well earned purchase.

I can understand hating DLC that's already on the disc or pre-order DLC, don't mistake my argument for DLC as an argument for dayone/preorder DLC, because devs that do that can go f*** themselves, I'm just defending DLC that are similar to Borderlands/Fallout/Oblivion that extend to already well priced and content packed games.

But it seems as if there can be no expansions or addons without todays spoiled generation expecting them for free, regardless of how hard the devs worked on those expansions and how much content is put into them.

DLC certainly is a tricky subject.

I'll admit I was overjoyed when I read that FS wasn't having any DLC for Dark Souls. I guess you're right, its comforting to know that it's one time purchase. It could of been very, very easy for FS to take out some parts of the game, parts you probably won't see until several playthroughs in and make them DLC. But they didn't, it's all in there and yes, it makes me happy to know that I'm getting a quality product at a great price.

But then, I'm not a hater of DLC. Sure, developers annoy me when they add in useless stuff, special editions that is all DLC crap, or a bunch of multiplayer maps thats just pointless to have. But then the Liberty City Stories was a great DLC as was Undead Nightmare. And I'm sure Oblivion and Fallout got fine DLC but then they just release it later on down the line in a GOTY edition at the same price you paid for the original game without that stuff in there.

I think calling us a spoiled generation is a little unfair. Half of us here probably eaisly remember when game were just released and there was no hope for anymore stuff and you just had to wait for the sequel and DLC was strictly PC. But those games seemed full and enjoyable. Like you said, it probably makes people feel like they've not got a complete product, especially when you get crap like 'Day One DLC'

vickers500 I, overall, agree with you. I bought a lot of ['good type'] DLC already (R*'s - excluding LA Noire - for example, Borderlands, some others) and in an ideal concept that's the way how it should be done.

But DLC business put a 'too much of a gray area' on this, where [good or not] DLCs are a way to expand the game in a fair way or, like you and MeatAbstract already said, a way to 'profit comfortably'.

Since the subject's Dark Souls I must say I put that argument over there because when I first knew it I just thought: "wah.. with all the chances, who could've guess it. Even this [could] have been a marketing agenda talk, I know I'll have an excellent piece of fun in my hands. Without all the doubts on buying extra stuff or thinking where I'm losing some of the final intent of the game or not.".

I mean, I'm not (and I dislike people who are) a blind fan of the past in the games industry, but ten years ago when devs launched a game was their only chance to show their piece, "it's now or never", games came complete, polished as much as they could have been, there weren't other chances. Now, with DLCs, devs can just put these thoughts behind (LA Noire and Civ5 comes in mind right now) and worst yet, they still profit from it.

Now, you'll tell me that FS/Namco don't deserve any merit from this behavior? They're not 'Saviours' like you put but they're, at least, keeping the ethic way of developing games breathing deeper.

I loved some DLCs and I want DLCs coming from such great devs like R* and (hoping) FS, but if it is to explicitly show how unethical devs like EA and similar (sorry, I urge to keep EA on the spotlight) I really vote on FS/Namco's act.

Apparently you still don't get what I'm saying. You assume games like Oblivion and Fallout 3 and Red Dead intentionally took out content to sell later as DLC, which cannot be proven.

All of those games I mentioned, you get a QUALITY PRODUCT at a GREAT PRICE, even WITHOUT the DLC. The DLC is simply EXTRA. The comfort I'm talking about, is those people who would rather have NO DLC at all (even though the vanilla version of the game is jam freaking packed full of quality content) simply because they believe they HAVE to have EXTRA UNNECESSARY DLC. That's what pisses me off, is those people who would rather just have the game itself without ANY brand new content being released.

If the Dark Souls devs release the best damned game of all time with tons and tons of hours of content but then released some DLC to extend the game, then a bunch of whiny, spoiled brats would STILL complain because they FEEL they aren't getting the complete experience, even though they got way more than they paid, because they are spoiled brats who think that everything should be given to them for free.

When you say DLC, it seems as if you automatically assume they cut DLC out to sell it later (which as I said before, is ridiculous to assume that every dev does), but when I talk about DLC, I mean the DLC that comes out 5+ months later that the devs actually started working on after the game was completed, DLC that has like 5+ hours of content and adds a LOT of content to an already jam packed game.

So? That's the price you pay for waiting or buying day one. Those who want to play the game now get to enjoy themselves now, those who are able to be patient and wait, get the better deal.

If you don't think games like Fallout 3/Oblivion/Borderlands are full and enjoyable without the DLC, then sorry, but you really are spoiled and expect WAAAAAY too much. People need to look at the quality of the game before the DLC comes out and decide whether or not it's worth the full price before automatically dismissing DLC as some sort of ripoff.

FS/Namco are CLAIMING their game will be complete, but really, there's no way of ever knowing if that's true or not unless you personally were involved with the dev team. Even if the game comes out and it has tons of content, there's still always the possibility that they simply cut something because they didn't have enough time. You cant always take the dev team at their word on everything they say. It's up to the individual to decide whether or not the game is worth their money (or 'complete' as you refer to it).

I will however give them credit for not having pre-order or day one dlc, but so far, that's all the credit they deserve in my eyes (in terms of how they do business).

I wish I were but I'm not. Still, I'm a developer and if you are too you must have at least the sight of what implies in delivering a 'complete' product to a huge public, and it'll be, for the huge majority, far away from the initial 'perfect' concept of it. So I really don't believe literally on the word 'complete' when a game goes out, I believe that its game experience will be complete, even with faults or mistakes.

I've been playing Demon's Souls for a little more than a month right now and what I have to say is that I don't feel any other game had reinvented some overused and some 10-year old concepts like it did.

From Software wasn't satisfied on only creating a [pretty hard and bashing] unique gameplay, this even an amateur SNES rom mod of Super Mario can give you, but it created a world where gamers could get used to it, while enjoying its discovery. They have talent on seeing how a game should be given to the player, not only on executing code.

Sorry if I get too involved on this, I can miss my point because I'm really into it, but what I mean is that after seeing all the genius work on game design [and, together, human behavior] they did on Demon's Souls I just cannot be much skeptical (which I am 90% of the time) when they say their game is 'complete'. From them, I'm understanding that I'll have a complete game experience, and that's what I'm after in a game.

I have no doubts that Dark Souls will be 'worth it'(my version of your 'complete'), because from what I've played of Demons Souls, it was pretty good.

Okay, here, picture this scenario: Dark Souls comes out, and it's everything you've ever wanted from the game, it's long, it's amazing, it's incredibly polished and you love it so much, that you feel as if you owe THEM money. Now, picture that 5 months down the line, they announce/release dlc for Dark Souls. Would you feel betrayed or ripped off because you aren't getting it for free? I'm not sure if you personally would, but I know a lot of people do, and I find that incredibly ridiculous and childish, which is the point I'm trying to make. Devs release a great game, people are extremely satisfied and feel the game was worth every dollar, devs announce DLC which isn't mandatory for the core experience, people are extremely pissed and feel ripped off simply because they FELT like they didn't receive a complete product. It's asinine to think that just because something extra is released, then that makes the previous release incomplete.

Demon's Souls 2? It'll be highly unlikely there will be one considering FromSoftware wanted to make the game multiplatform, hence Dark Souls.

It's Demon's Souls is everyway possible but just expanded upon.

Awesome sauce. Demons souls rocks and I've been trying to get people to play this in anticipation for Dark Souls. $20 for Demons Souls is an absolute steal.

There was an announcement about 6 months ago by Atlus stating they weren't cutting the service in March 2011. I think this petition is helping to decide the game's fate.
