Uncharted 2 has more awards than every epic game combined. I don't think Amy Hennig can be touched by anyone at this point. She is by far one of the greatest writers in the biz, and the characters are world renowned. Gears is fun, but I don't see how anyone can connect to them. People dig Gears, but people love Nathan and Elena, and Sully like no other. Both game are going to be huge though. And for what it's worth Gears 3 looks to be the best of the series. And I can't wait to play it.

Gears story is a bit better imo. But everything else about the single player is not on the same level. Gears story follows on to the next game, it's a proper trilaogy, Uncharted is just random stories with recurring characters, love interest follows on but the stories don't. Uncharted is good for it's set piece's and presentation, so while the story itself may be just passable, the journey through it is what's amazing. Gears is just an average campaign through and throguh with a decent story and backstory, I thought humanity is almost wiped out in gears 3 anyway? Ther survival means nothing now. It's like in XenoGears,SPOLIERZZ ZZZZZthe whole human race dies except for a few.

my god, you just need to stop talking. gears wont ever, EVER have a better story than uncharted. i laughed my ass off when doms wife died because the acting was so corny and stupid. the voice acting is terrible and the plot comes out to be something a 7th grader could have wrote. cliche on an epic level is what it is.

uncharted on the other hand, has some of the best (executed) single player storyline in gaming history. its plot may be a bit cliche but the characters are so believable and relatable that it hardly matters in the big scheme of things.

and yes GEARS has a great story but the re playability is ONLINE and for me its mainly in HORDE MODE..

Gears' story is just made to serve the action not the other way around. Characters are one-dimensional, the story is incredibly simplistic, and there's no real emotion (I actually laughed during the whole Maria scene, it was horribly done).

I also found that a little hard to swallow, but I really did enjoy the story of Gears. It was like a summer movie, not big on substance but atmospheric with likable, predictable characters. They don't need to reinvent the wheel. Stories like this that entertain still have a place, in my opinion.

A story and universe concept is entirely different from the presentation of said story. For example, the novelization of the Halo series has been actually quite well done.

Karen Traviss, who is one of the few writers to do something interesting with Star Wars in recent years, also wrote a few Gears of War books. I'd wager they're quite good. Since she's also writing the script for GEoW 3, I'll further wager that there will be a profound improvement.

The first two games, regardless of any outside content, were simply nothing amazing from a storytelling standpoint. It was, as darkride suggested, a summer movie: Hyper-macho characters with massive guns spouting bad dialogue.

2. HALO AND GEARS WILL NEVER COMPARE? really? HALO is one of the most recognizable games of the HD generation, it started FPS on consoles and it has one of the best stories out there. Gears definitely has a good story too.

3. UNCHARTED has been way more recognizable then ANY XBOX exclusive.. i'm sorry again.. In terms of "story" Gears obviously beats Uncharted, seeing as how Gears actually HAS a story. The plots in Uncharted are that of Indiana Jones movies. After seeing Indiana Jones, I didn't look back and remember the key plot points fondly. I remembered the edge of my seat thrills and Harrison Ford's awesome character.

Now, saying Gears has a "good" story is going way over the limit. Gears of War's story is as easily understood and appreciated by a 6 year old as it is understood and appreciated by the Halo/COD players who play it. Uncharted 1 did kind of suck, but Uncharted 2 is probably one of the best games ever made. Gears doesn't even rank in the top 50 best games ever made.

Uncharted's story's are seperated between games. Gears is 1 long continous story.

Not really a fair comparison. Uncharted is only a franchise based on new adventures, each with a different story but expanding on character development. Gears is a franchise that takes place in a univers of 1 continous story with sub plots in each game for character development.

It's like comparing Indiana Jones to Star Wars. 1 has stories based on each itteration, the other is a trilogy based on 1 continous story.

I do prefer Gears story over Uncharted and Uncharted 2's stories but I am a sci-fi nut so I love those kinds of stories. I will take Star Wars over Indiana Jones any day, but I still enjoy a good Indiana Jones movie.

The story in Gears is just as predictable as one might say the story in Uncharted is. Aliens push humans to the brink of extinction, but humans fight back despite the odds somehow coming out victorious. It's not like there's anything new here. It's been done before.

Uncharted may be predictable but a story isn't measured just by the story itself. The characters and the way they develop help tell the story, and the character development in uncharted blows gears out of the water. Add in the cinematic effect that uncharted has and personally i find the story more entertaining to watch though others will disagree.

Gears doesn't have much if any character development at all. There are moments here and there (dom's wife) but not too many.

Uncharted is also a game that sells for the single player campaign alone. Gears not so much.

The quality of Uncharted's scripting is streets ahead of Gears.

Romance is an extremely difficult subject matter for video games to deal with, and yet Uncharted 2 Drake's relationship with Elena is believable, even in the midst of exploding helicopters & collapsing cities.

While in comparison, who really gave a damn about Dom's tacked on search his wife, Maria? The game just doesn't carry the same emotional punch, because you don't feel as much sympathy for juiced-up bullet sponges.

Actuall the story of gears isn't that. the story is humans came to the locust's planet. The locucts fought back against the "surface dwellers" for coming in and using up all of the planets resources. Kind of a different take on an alien invasion when the aliens turn out to be the humans. The fact that people don't see this simple fact shows that people don't care about stories in games anymore. And I like Uncharted more, just because I actually take the time to understand a game's story doesn't make me a blind fanboy.

Actually, you've got the story for Gears completely wrong which is kind of ironic since you call it so predictable. Gears takes place on a planet called Sera. Neither race (Locusts and Humans) are considered aliens as they are both indigenous species of the planet. Both species evolved on that very planet and did not travel through space to get there. There is no "Earth" per say and for all purposes Sera is what we would consider Earth. Humans themselves almost obliterated the human race and the planet because of the Pendulum Wars, a war that lasted 79 years and only ended shortly before Emergence Day. Still at a weakened state from waging such a long war, human forces were easily overcome by the invading Locust forces. As far as coming out "victorious" humanity never really had any victories and in the beginning of Gears 3 the fate of humanity is uncertain. There is no more organized government, no more soldiers, no more society. Humanity is at the brink of extinction due not only to the Locust but also because of the exhausting Pendulum Wars. I got this all just from the games alone. Gears has a very rich back story that can be explored further by reading the books.

No problem, that was just the quick down and dirty. I would suggest reading up online to get a more complete refresher. I'm actually surprised how Epic built a fairly thorough back story to a game that doesn't seem to stress it that much. I prefer the overall story in Gears more but the storytelling is far superior in Uncharted. The cut scenes, scripted action, and voice acting are definitely better than what Gears offers.

Dragon, give me a break. This "Beta" was the final build since the game was suppose to be released in April. With the date being pushed back, they threw out a beta to test the servers and tweak balance issues/polish game. In this case, the beta is a PRIME example of what this game is.

Gears 2 MP was a mess simply because it was not on dedicated servers. This installment has it and the beta was the best I have played in the series, and I am a die hard gears veteran./

I think in the case of character development Uncharted is the winner, but for an overall storyline Gears is the winner. But each Uncharted game kinda has it's own plot to follow and Gears has followed one plot through the entire series.

Uncharted's story is too hollywood for my liking. Dashing hero goes off on exciting adventures around the world fighting and stealing just to make a profit.

But when a beautiful blonde gets involved he suddenly has a conscience and desides he has to keep her safe. Then risks his life to save the world all the while there is no risk because he can be shot, blown up, Left hanging from a train, attacked by strange looking zombies, Attacked by massive blue warriors and yet he lives.

But that doesnt mean i dont love uncharted, because i do. But i just dont find the story very interesting.

Making it easier to be turned into a movie doesnt make it a typical hollywood story. But then i the gears story differently to people who have just played the games because ive read the books.

I know Cole's big jolly personallity is just his thrashball act that he desided to put on because the other soldiers needed a boost in moral because they are all scared, Especially Baird. But in reality cole is scared too.

I know Baird is a sarcastic douche because he is frightened to let anyone get close to him because he spent his childhood alone in a big mansion because anyone who got close to him did so because of money.

I know Marcus holds himself responseable for tons of peoples deaths and barely shows any emotion because he is bottling it all up and thats why he barely says anything.

I think the problem with Dom's wife's scene is that there wasn't really much of a background for him and his wife presented to the players other than a picture and one short scene.So the connection didn't click,it all happened so fast and by the time we reached the scene where she dies it all ended.

The gears story can be seen as rather shallow, especially the first. One has to read the books to be completely into the story around the games (which are quite good btw). I personally am really interested in story and have read 3 of the books so far. (but this is the games debate, not literature)

uncharted does a better job telling a story thoughout the game with cinematics and character expressions. the only thing lacking from uncharted is a continuing story (since mostly the stories are standalone) It also has not created a "World of its own" sort of speak. Ive never heard anyone refer to the uncharted universe.

so in the end your comparing apples to oranges. People always want to compare the two games due to being third person cover shooters, despite being the only comparison (much like comparing call of duty to bioshock).

I will enjoy both and be happy to not be arguing which is better.

Gears of War has an overarching story, one that seems likely to end with it's next game.
The Uncharted series is more like a series of vaguely connected adventures that stand up on their own without needing to play the other ones.
In short, it's an apples and oranges comparison.

I am a Pc gamer mainly, but when I play console games I tend to play 360 games more (better online). HOWEVER, Uncharted simply has a better story. Gears of War has a story that, to me, comes off as dry. We have been following Dom and his quest to find his wife in addition to his relationship with Pheonix. I thought these characters were shallow and the execution of the story is poor. SPOLIER: Remember when Dom finds his 'wife' lol Terrible acting. Gears has always been about the gameplay/graphics. Epic simply can't do a good story IMHO. Uncharted has deeper characters (you actually relate and emphasize with them). The dialogue is witty and well written as opposed to gear's very linear and predictable story. Uncharted for me is a better story/musical score. While I feel many PS3 exclusives are over rated (Infamous, resistance), the Uncharted franchise exemplifies some of the best game experiences this generation and stands as by far my favorite Playstation franchise.

Wow N4G makes the funniest jokes. Gears 'story' is basically a bunch of hard headed marines killing living things pretending that they have emotions or humanity. this guy cried when dom saw his wife get killed, for me it wasnt sad at all normal wife normal life, barely mentioned her in the first gears and through out the game he was yelling about his wife all the damm time it was annoying and i knew she was going to be dead. Maybe thats why i didnt feel a thing. elena part didnt felt nothing either cause i knew she was going to live lol.

The other scene he mentioned was MGS3 with the boss i cried at that part, why cause you could see how she acted around him the way she tried to push him back bringing him to be the ultimate soldier as she was seen as a villian but in reality a true hero that sacrificed everything even snake that she considered one of her own. And thats a few parts in the story mentioned not all of it, so you really clinged to the character in serious matter.

As for both stories gears lacks big time and even more with some annoying character, Uncharted always keeps you at your feet with twists and turns, THAT pace of story telling reminds me of MGS series, also the surprises at the end.
In my opinion one of the greatest story this gen with that feeling is assassins creed series and uncharted series. Still need to play MAsseffect though to see how it is.

Putting aside everything else and just looking at narrative, GeOW fails at so many levels. There is no theme, just an apocalypse set up meant to illicit our sympathies. Every character is gruff space marine with no differentiation in roles or personality, save for Dom. Over the top dialogue without a trace of irony or self-awareness.

Gears is a fun and very pretty game, but it has a shallow one dimensional throw away story which appears to have been written by and for pre-pubesant boys (even the angry one sided god of war dialog is better). I play gears inspite of the story, not for it.

Uncharted on the other hand, has a one of the most smartly written, witty, and perfectly acted stories to ever hit a consol, and it was clearly written for adults(Amy Heenig is among the very best writers in the games industry today!)

This year, its the two best new exclusive franchises for each console going head to head.

Gears 1 > Uncharted 1
Gears 2 < Uncharted 2

Gears 1 GOTY 2006
uncharted 2 GOTY 2009

Both games showcase the best graphics and highest production values for each console.
Both have great multiplayer, and sell millions.

Gears pros:
Multiplayer that thousands still play everyday,higher meta combined average, more sales, co-op

Uncharted pros:
AAA summer movie blockbuster experience, amazing single player experience, and with Uncharted 2 recognized as one of the best games if all time really speaks for itself.

Uncharted - mediocre story, amazing presentation

I'm not a fan of gears at all but even i can recognize it has a better story than Uncharted, but it's hurt a lot by it's presentation. take away the game and rip just the bare plot of each and you'll see that Uncharted's story is just another run of the mill adventure story, while gears is a bit more unique and atmospheric. This doesn't change my stance on the games though, i still don't care much for gears, and i'm still a diehard fan of the uncharted series

Compare both game's game play and presentation, NOT story as Uncharted's is much stronger. Not to mention the connection and how "real" the character's feel. You can see them existing in real life. But Gears and the "bros love" thing is over the top with overstated manliness. This is fine for a game though, and fits in with the world. As a result though the story suffers.

Gears had great game play and graphics as well a Uncharted. However, Uncharted wins out in its compelling story and the way the story is told.

Game-1: A bunch of monsters/ aliens that lived underground for god knows how long, and they just decided to come to the surface of earth just because a dude was Beijing out of prison/ jail....... Good story

Game-2 : An American traditional teasure hunter that travels the world to find things, that somehow end up having the power to give someone the ability to rule the world to a certain degree, while at the same time stopping his aggressors...... Good story

Conclusion:But one of these games does a fantastic job of telling there story, at the same time having its cinematic points on par, with movies..... Uncharted borrows from Indiana Jones and Lara Croft story lines, which borrow from real life archaeologists and treasure hunters, so its art imitating life, Gears story (and Epic in general) borrow alot from the Warhammer universe, character looks, antagonist type, etc. so they are tagged as just copycats because its art imitating other art. I'm not saying either story is better, but its tougher to write 'original' fiction, science or non, when there is no real world parallel to draw as comparison. Most game developers dont have or dont want to pay talented writers to write or flesh out story ideas for games.

I've played both series and in my opinion I like Uncharted better.
(Story, graphics, faster game play, multiplayer, co op, characters, worlds, adventures and so forth are excellent in Uncharted.)

I enjoy Gears of War series for the Single Player/Horde Mode.
(Multiplayer is a lag fest and is full of shot gun spammers.)

I enjoy Uncharted a lot for Single Player/Co Op/Multiplayer.
(I'm so glad the health has been improved and situational awareness has been removed in UC3. Sweet.)

I actually really like Gears story. It works well on a game to game basis. It's not the most highbrow story and the Maria arch comes off as a bit dull and pretty much falls flat by ending 3/4 the way through Gears 2 but the whole thing is like a cheesy 80s/90s action movie, it's dumb fun and provides enough incentive to keep playing just to see how insane it can get next.

Uncharted works better as stand alone stories, while stuff caries over from game to game, they're self contained stories and they can change up the narrative a lot more as they haven't comitted to one set path. It also potrays the characters a lot better and while not bogging us down in backstory, definitely gives insight into the character.

It's two COMPLETELY different methods of story telling and both are very movie-like in their approach. Again, this for me is as silly as comparing Gears and Resistance/Gears and Killzone for gameplay, 2 or 3 completely different gameplay styles there as well.

The Gears of war story was so generic, that they had to make standalone novel books to compensate what you didn't see or feel from ANY the characters and its storyline.

For the uncharted series, it wasn't needed whatsoever. Its called having GOOD storytelling with total character engagement. You didn't need any sort of novelization outside of the game, to get a feel of the characters. They were fleshed out fully within the game.

Hell, the actress who played Elena Fisher did such a good job for her portrayal, that she was immediately hired as lead actress for the ongoing HAVEN series on the sci-fi channel.

Got to the part where the "writer" "explains" Uncharted's story; let me say this, he obviously hasn't played neither of the Uncharted games long enough to know that the franchise as of right now, has more than one story; as matter of fact it has two. Uncharted's story is executed in a fairly different way when compared to Gears. Gears, in it's current arc will be wrapped up in a trilogy. Also he completed undermined the the presentation and characters when comparing it to Gears, example he said this about Gears:

"Gears is a story about the survival of humankind on the planet of Sera. There have been a few minor victories but the outcome is still looking bleak. Fighting hard to keep mankind from the the brink is the Delta Squad. A group of men( and women) all with very different backgrounds and personalities.
