G4TV: Dead Island Review

It’s only been several months since Dead Island was unveiled with overly hyped media fanfare with an arguable gimmick involving somber music and CG zombie mayhem played backwards. Now, with the game’s actual release, Dead Island joins the current wave of zombie-themed videogames where there’s a greater emphasis on action and less on traditional survival horror. Moreover, it’s an open world infested with the undead and the kind of sure-fire concept that we would have seen in a couple years had developer Techland not conceived of it first.

game is alright it has some cool moments but the bugs ruin the experience

MysticStrummer4610d ago (Edited 4610d ago )

Yup. I wanted to like this game. Love killing zombies, but there are more bugs than zombies in the PS3 version. I was at 39% progress in the story when I started playing this morning. I played for hours and was at 53% when I stopped for a break. Loaded my game a couple of hours later... and I was back at 39%. That's happened more than once and I've had to do several quests multiple times because of it. I've had weapons vanish into thin air, or just sit there on the ground blinking as I try to pick them up in vain. I've seen zombies run into a wall, vanish, and sometimes pop out of the ground a few moments later. Earlier while I was driving, the screen faded to black, then faded back in and I was no longer driving. The truck was down the road and I was just standing there in the middle of the street. I lost access to a weapon mod because of a bug. Dammit.

I really like it but it is super repetitive and the side quests can just get downright boring.

I love the idea, setting, etc. The main characters are pretty cheezy "who do you voodoo b!+ch!" LOL and the weapons break down crazy fast. Plus things respawn exactly where they were once you leave and come back.

Its a good game .. . but could have been great. 7/10 from me. Average game and if you like the genre it is worth buying, otherwise Gamefly/rent. Its like Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3 had a premature Zombie baby. This game feels rushed in areas and gets clunky. But the atmosphere is good.

Its like I love it and want to criticize it at the same time. Weird.

phantomexe4610d ago

I haven't seen any of these bugs. In fact until today after there update i lost the tropy count on stuff but other then that its been cool.Hell i can't stop playing it. My wife and i have done nothing the past 4 days but play it...get up go to work come home play dead island. Way less bugger then fallout or new vegas ever was.

MysticStrummer4610d ago

Not saying your lying about your experience, but this is hands down the buggiest game I've ever played. I played Fallout 3 and the only problem I ever had with it was some freezing every once in awhile. I didn't like it enough to buy New Vegas but I did hear that was a buggy game. As buggy as this has been, the online play was at least smooth... until the patch... now the game freezes about every five minutes and is very laggy while it does run.

DarkTower8054610d ago

That's one thing I never understood. How can one person have almost a bug free experience while another will be plagued with bugs?

I had a bug free experience with Fallout 3, while for others bugs rendered the game unplayable. So far, I've only had 1 bug in Dead Island, and it was very minor. I hope I don't get any major ones.

phantomexe4610d ago

I swear i've had no bugs.It sounds like i've lucked out. I hope they fix everyones copys soon the game really picks up.

Pintheshadows4610d ago

I've had little issues so far. I'm only about 3 hours in but if I get the save glitch I'll trade it for Driver.

DOOMZ4610d ago

Love the game, buy it now! 8.5/10

Dropdeadll4609d ago (Edited 4609d ago )

now is not a good time, game only saves a small percent of what you did on PS3 version

Fade_Walker4610d ago

I haven't opened my PS3 copy. I think I'll take it back and purchase it again later when they get things smoothed out a bit.

Dead Island 2 devs believe a Dead Island remake would be a “mistake”

We might be in the age of remasters, but it doesn't look like the Dead Island 2 devs believe remaking the original game is the right move for the series.

but remakes require far less effort for these companies and they can still charge $70 for them!

Feel like everyone makes fun of Skyrim re-releasing like 18 times yet applaud these remasters elsewhere. Would much prefer NEW games

CrimsonWing69405d ago

Making sequels really is the way to go. Otherwise we'll be stuck playing only the first entry, forever!!!

Dead Island's 2011 reveal is still the best game trailer of all time

Josiah Motley of KnowTechie writes: "I love video game trailers. While I don’t believe they are an integral part of a game’s success (especially these days), there’s something about a well-produced trailer that really just reminds me why I like video games."

Also the most misleading of all time

SDuck817d ago

How so? Because it focused on a family that you see dying? (innocent question, haven't gotten a chance to play any Dead Island game yet)

aconnellan817d ago

More the tone of it - the tone of the trailer suggested something personal and dramatic, but the game was very much reminiscent of Left 4 Dead in that you were just there to kill zombies and nothing more

Ashby_JC817d ago

You play as a singular character there is no family involved at all in the game. Still a stand out trailer that I remember clearly from years ago.

Fntastic817d ago (Edited 817d ago )

Did you not like the game?

I remember going in expecting a L4D style of game, but the excessive camera swaying honestly made me feel ill, and it's rare for a game to do that to me, still don't understand why the need for anything other than maybe a subtle slight camera movement when doing melee attacks etc. Other than that i didn't really find the game that good. In all honesty i had more enjoyment out of DNF, and i know many people crap on that game.

BioShockGX816d ago

I still remember this misleading controversy

RickRoland817d ago

It’s the music. It’s perfect. I agree with this for sure, it is well choreographed….unfortunately the game didn’t live up to the trailer.

brewin816d ago

Maybe not, but it was still a good game. I liked how they expanded things with Dying Light, but Dead Island was a great first attempt! I really liked all the Easter eggs and homages to other horror franchises sprinkled throughout. Sure it was a little cheesy and over there top, but it was a good happy medium between Far Cry and Fallout with zombies.

I'm gonna heavily disagree with that.

CrimsonWing69817d ago

Have you ever seen any of the MGS 3 or MGS 4 trailers? Those blow this out of the water for me.

TricksterArrow817d ago

They require prior knowledge of the franchise, tho. You show this trailer to anyone, and I mean ANYONE, and they can understand what's going on and relate to the family dynamic almost immediately. No need to know who is Snake, or Fox Hound, or Raiden, or Metal Gear...

Top 10 Xbox 360 Games That Need to be Backward Compatible

Kevin F. from Link Cable Gaming writes: "Many of the best Xbox 360 games are playable on the Xbox One and Series X|S consoles. Some even with some enhanced visuals and performance. Unfortunately, not every game from the Xbox 360 library has received this glorious feat of being able to be played on more modern Microsoft consoles."

Max Payne 3 needs to be on that list.

autobotdan1031d ago

The Spider-man games will never happen. The xbox 360 Marvel Ultimate Alliance games have a better chance of happening than Spider-man titles but won't happen. The Xbox One Ultimate Alliance games delisted years ago

Vits1030d ago

Yeah... you can totally forget about those entries that got delisted because of licensing issues. Those are not happening.

MetalProxy1030d ago

Wait everything isn’t BC? You guys act like it is lol

porkChop1030d ago

Almost all of the games people want to play are BC, and that's a hell of a lot better than having none available.

ApocalypseShadow1030d ago (Edited 1030d ago )

Almost all the games people want to play? Not true. Majority picks screw over the minority who have games collecting dust. Metal is right. Fans make it seem that it's all. 39/997 games from OG Xbox is NOT all. 568/2154 from 360 is NOT all. But you guys play it up like it is.

And from my count, there are 4,000+ PS4 BC games on PS5 that I see. And almost every VR game. Series X has no Kinect games or Kinect 2. But you played that up too. No more dancing.

As for the article, some of the BC games make sense. The others with Spider-Man aren't happening.
