Top Five Classic Games That HAVE Modernized Well

OC Weekly: It's not an easy task to take a once-popular gaming franchise and fine-tune it to appeal to a modern day audience. Games with cute graphics and simple gameplay aren't very marketable to a more blood-thirsty and online competitive modern crowd. Remember when certain NES games would cost up to $60 when they first came out? No one would buy a simple NES game for that much money these days.

Luckily, there are certain games that were popularized on the NES that have retained their classic charm and feel, yet have matured enough in order to make it a brand-new experience with present day sensibilities. The following are best examples of five NES games that do just that.

Metal Gear Solid 4 will remain as one of the best games of all time.

Truly a phenomenal experience.

DarkCharizard_4617d ago (Edited 4617d ago )

It will always remain the best ever game on the PS3 for me, that's for sure.

BrightFalls764617d ago

It's not a game, it's a movie.

bequietjohnnie4617d ago

Dark you're def right. One of the first true games of this "generation".

And Bright....I'm going to take every cutscene from Gears and Mass Effect and disregard the other hours of gameplay and claim that it's a movie.

PirateThom4617d ago

Bright Falls?

Oh, from Alan Wake?

That famous 360 movie.

NoobSessions4617d ago

Someones getting defensive..

RedDead4617d ago

Disagree so much, it's average for a Metal Gear

CDbiggen4617d ago

I'm a massive MGS fan, but i'll always prefer MGS3 to 4.

bozebo4616d ago (Edited 4616d ago )

MGS4 is the best game of this generation.

But it isn't as good as 1, 2 or 3 lol. (yes I know everybody hates 2 because you play Raiden but it's a fantastic game)

MGS4 and Lost Odyssey are the only 2 games this generation that actually left an impression on me.

For anybody who loved FF7,8,10 - get a 360 just for Lost Odyssey. If it carried the FF brand then FF would be #2 in this article (it was made by the best people who left square after enix broke them).

@ brightfalls76 Its not a movie it's an experience

zerocrossing4617d ago

Metal Gear Solid 4 pwns most games this gen, nuff said.

chidori6664617d ago

MGS4 might not be the best game of this gen, but it’s very close to it in my opinion. I’ve almost played every game in the MGS serie and it never lets me down in it’s story.

zerocrossing4617d ago

agreed, story wise and gameplay wise, MGS always delivers imo.

Godmars2904616d ago

Pity the "political" air of this console generation has prevented Konami and Kojima from directly building building from it.

MGS5, if they're ever going to do it, should have been announced at least two years ago. Instead we got the multiplatform Rising which doesn't use the MGS4 engine.

Castelvania lords of shadow??
No way! That game was a huge disappointment for many castlevania fans.

First, since when castlevania is about fighting huge monsters, riding on their backs?
Oh since GOW 1 introduced, that's when!

And really, Satan??? I wanna fight motherfu@$@ng Dracula!!
And many of the original soundtrack didn't make it to the game.
Like bloody tears. Tho they got Simons theme and vampire killer so I give em that.

But overall, it is a huge disappointment.

KingSlayer4617d ago (Edited 4617d ago )

Did you play it or acting like you did? When a game has a "God" mask, wouldn't you expect the Devil? After all, Dracula is Dracula because of his betrayal of Jesus for silver. I thought it fit, made sense and that ending...hell fire! Castlevania LoS was great and underrated.

@Catoplepas I beat LoS and have both DLC packs. And to your point, I don't think he's played it if he wants to fight Dracula.

Catoplepas4617d ago

Actually he is. Did YOU play the game?

Either way I agree with you the game is great although I really wouldn't consider it to be underrated since it garnered a unanimously positive response from critics.

@dark-hollow As for fighting Dracula I'm assuming you didn't watch the ending?

dark-hollow4617d ago (Edited 4617d ago )

Please show me you FIGHT Dracula, you know by gameplay not cutscenes or DLC bullshit.

Besides, Satan IS in the game, who do you thought that naked douchebag is called??? Yeah, Satan.

It's not underrated or anything.
I mean I didn't dislike it because it didn't follow SOTN style.
Actually, I loved the classic gameplay of the first castlevania games where you play in a linear style.
But this game doesn't feel like a castlevania game at all.

FEARprototype4617d ago

lol...you,ve been playing as dracula from the beginning....

dark-hollow4617d ago (Edited 4617d ago )

But you don't recognize that till the ending.
All the game you play as a Belmont.

If actually you play AS Dracula after the ending that would be interesting.

theEx1Le4617d ago

Awful lot of spoilers up in here -_-

yourgodisdead4616d ago

You should learn the phrase "spoiler alert"

Im sure not everyone on the site has played it

Metal Gear Solid 4 is the only game from previous generations that didn't suck this gen.
look at DMC, Final Fantasy,Resident Evil and Silent Hill

Stealth2k4617d ago

and even halo got worse.........

BrightFalls764617d ago

I have never understood the love for the Metal Gear series. It's a interactive movie, not much gameplay.

KingSlayer4617d ago

Play it. Don't regurgitate the opinions of those who haven't. It's cutscene heavy and gameplay heavy. See, it has what's called a STORY.

punisher994617d ago (Edited 4617d ago )

Thats insane. The Metal Gear franchise has had some of the best boss battles ever. Some of you FPS fans are to used to running around and mindlessly shooting everything. MGS has always been about a overall high quality experience, strong character support and meaningful objectives and gameplay.

ZBlacktt4617d ago

Yeah, it's above the normal avg game player's head. This game's story is very dead. It's game play is the best of the best for each game at it's time. With the HD Collection coming in Nov. We all get to relive the memories of playing the games again for the first time. Only in HD now. So can't wait.

CDbiggen4617d ago

You can skip the cutscenes. The games are just great fun to play.

TheDivine4617d ago

Its all about the stealth, the awesome bosses, and the great story. Mgs3 was as close to perfect as a game can get imo. Mgs4 not so much, hated the end but still a great game.

Metroid For NES Could Be Inducted Into The Video Game Hall Of Fame

Other nominees include games like SimCity & Tony Hawk's Pro Skater.

There are some good nominees in this list that are deserving to be inducted also, but I feel Metroid has had the most impact on the industry out of all of these. Look how Metroid influenced the evolution of the Castlevania games, and the "Metroidvania" subgenre of games have become a prevailing force in gaming today. Especially now, Metroidvanias are bigger than ever.

I can very much see Resident Evil being added later too, bc it really did popularize and define the survival horror genre. I would say that one is next in line.

ApocalypseShadow33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

Agreed. When I got my NES back then, I of course had Super Mario Bros. But I also got Double Dribble, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Rad Racer, Zelda and Metroid. Loved playing all of them over and over. But Metroid was so deep and the music was so other worldly, that that game has stuck with me to this day decades later.

Sure other awesome games came along like Contra, Castlevania, Mega Man, etc. But Metroid really hit that sci-fi fix. And the twist of finding out who was in the suit was one of those great moments in gaming history talking with other friends in the neighborhood that had the console that rushed to the end to find out for themselves.

Definitely deserves hall of fame like many other picks. Should have been inducted a long time ago.

Miraak82 32d ago

If any Metroid game should get the honor it should be Super Metroid , it's perfection in my eyes . 30 years later and I still feel it's the most epic shit ever .

OtterX32d ago

Yea, I agree that Super Metroid REALLY raised the bar on atmosphere and exploration, still in my Top 10 or 20 games of all time. The original Metroid did set a good framework, but Super Metroid perfected it in its first sequel. Since it's the only one up for vote, I'd still vote for the original Metroid bc it did establish a very good concept of gaming in a more primitive gaming era. But, you're absolutely right.

Chocoburger32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

The GBA remake deserves it or Super Metroid, the original was a very sloppy and rushed game programmed in 3 months and it shows.

If you've never played the remake, it's absolutely a must play, fixes basically every flaw in the game. Check out ExoParadigmGamer's comparison video.

My top 3 are Mario 3, Mario World and Mario 64. Mario Odyssey is also excellent, and I enjoyed Sunshine but didn't care for the Galaxy series.
