The world’s very best Quake Live players will once again gather in Dallas, Texas to take part in intense online tournaments at QuakeCon 2011, being held August 4th-7th, 2011 at the Hilton Anatole. Top professionals will compete in the Intel-sponsored Quake Live Duel Invitational Masters and the Intel Quake Live Team Deathmatch Invitational Masters and contend for a share of over $40,000 in prize money. Also new to this year’s QuakeCon, up-and-coming players will have the opportunity to prove their gaming expertise in the Brink Open Championships.
BLG writes, "Alongside the Wolfenstein and DOOM franchises, there are the Quake games. Known for fast-paced and insane multiplayer deathmatch action, there was a time Quake was best known for its single-player design.
That all changed as time passed (i.e., after Quake 3 Arena). Multiplayer deathmatches were never the same.
As other FPS games leaned more into improved narrative and storytelling, id Software delivered a genre-defining multiplayer experience.

Omar Banat: Despite the passage of time, the consistent player bases for these six ongoing games have stuck around through all of the highs and lows.
Huh, I'm not surprised at a couple of these but I did not think For Honor would have had the staying power that it did. Maybe I should pick it back up....
How about Warhammer Vermintide, seriously those games slap big time, and i've rarely had an issue matchmaking, but no one ever talks about them
I’d add Factions to the list. It has a smaller but super strong fan base. My brothers and I have put more hours into factions than all other multiplayer games combined
AAA games get all the attention. But some games get lost in the shuffle. Especially shooters! Make time for these five.
I didnt care for brink. I thought it was going to be like overwatch back in the day.
I read that they were going to stream the matches live, but the time difference over here means that they start will at 5am for me on a work day.
Still, I wish good luck to the 2 Australian players that are playing and hopefully I can catch a few games.
