FBI Arrests LulzSec Suspect in Ohio

GR: The FBI has raided the home of a man in Hamilton, Ohio, who is suspected to have connection to the hacker group Lulzsec. Of course, the FBI isn't saying anything about the matter other than confirming that the raid happened.

I wonder how many of the users in this thread actually clicked the link and read the whole article, which is quite short.

If they had, they would have discovered that the FBI did not track down this man by way of their own ingenuity. Rather, LulzSec revealed the man's name and information because the man attempted to snitch on LulzSec. LulzSec is ruthless.

Now the FBI has the man, and who knows what precautions LulzSec is taking to insure their anonymity.

But no, the users on this site believe that somehow the FBI did this on their own.

While that's true, the FBI wouldn't have performed a raid based on that information alone. It may have pointed them in the right direction, however they would need more concrete evidence to get a warrant for a raid.

These guys will eventually be caught. It might take 3 weeks, 3 months, or 3 years...but they are human and will make mistakes.

In this situation I tend to side with anyone who is not the FBI because the FBI is actually known for performing raids on homes without having concrete evidence, and for killing the pets of the people whose homes they are raiding.

Usually it has to do with drugs. If someone is suspected of selling drugs, even if they have a licence to sell marijuana given to them by the state, the feds still perform raids on those people, and shoot their dogs. And I'm not talking about violent dogs who were attacking them. They shoot and kill corgies, small bandy-legged dogs that do no more than bark.

I do believe that the FBI would perform a raid without concrete evidence, and all LulzSec would have to do is leak the information in such a way that the FBI would, having no other leads, obtain a warrant for this guy.

And there's no question, they broke this man's constitutional rights. Even though he may be a criminal, the FBI has no right to do this kind of stuff, but they do it anyway.

While there is no doubt that every branch of law enforcement has crossed the line at some point, there is no way the FBI would have confirmed the raid to the press without having obtained a warrant for the raid.
And with a warrant the FBI has every right to do this kind of stuff, that is their job.

Yes, they obtained a warrant. But no, I don't think they did it with any hard evidence.

Numerous times, the FBI conducts raids on nothing more than anonymous tip-offs. And their warrants usually allow them to do no more than search the premises, not terrorize the members of the household in the dead of night.

I see both Anonymous and LulzSec the same way I think of Sean Penn: I can appreciate some of the ideas being presented by both, but I don't always approve of the way they're approached and executed. Pointing out security flaws, awesome... pointing them out by stealing credit card numbers and personal info, jackass-ery.
