Unearthed: Trail of Ibn Battuta Announced + First Screenshots

Semaphore's latest looks to be an unabashed copy of developer Naughty Dog's Uncharted series, complete with ledge shimmying, duck and cover shooting and a slightly blockier version of Nathan Drake. We have more details and the debut trailer.

Young console gamers cant do anything with them.

Anyone who doesn't see how this is more of a ripoff of Uncharted than Tomb Raider is being willfully ignorant. Uncharted games have always been far more plot driven than Tomb Raider, and this game definitely seems to carry that vibe.

It's clearly riding Uncharted's coattails and doesn't look like it brings much new to the genre (which Uncharted undeniably did).

There is taking inspiration from and then there is putting out a clone that looks like it's made to run on a Game Gear. But the graphics themselves are pretty good. Whoever said it looks like a PS2 game has no clue about how to judge game graphics. The PS2 couldn't come close to rendering graphics like those.

Tomb Raider - which I played originally on a Sega Saturn cuz I'm older than you think - of course pre-dates Uncharted. It was also plainly part of Uncharted's inspiration.

HOWEVER... Uncharted truly has a flavor all it's own and also clearly draws inspiration from several other titles. Mix em' all together and you have a topnotch game with a unique voice. This "Unearthed" game is clearly formed after the Uncharted voice more than any other. In that sense, Uncharted is the "Original" in this scenario.

Everyone seems to be kicking off over the fact this game is an Uncharted clone. That's not really my problem with it... Uncharted is arguably a clone on Tomb Raider in a lot of sense. It took a hell of a lot of winning elements from Tomb Raider and improved/bettered them no end creating a game that became its own.

My problem with this game however is that it brings absolutely nothing new to the table. It will be a shoddy weak exploration adventure game that tarnishes what is one of the best genres to come into its own this generation. I don't want to play a shit ton of FPS shooters, I like to sit down and be immersed in a great storyline.

Trying to get me to fork out £40 on a game that's simply being made to make money on a genres success is shameful... A lot of companies would at least have the decency to hide this, this one doesn't. It wants your pocket and nothing else and is one of my biggest issues since gaming became a mainstream activity.

1. Gears of war is a rip-off of kill.switch with armor from Warhammer.

2. Tomb Raider is a rip-off of Pitfall.

Many games have something that came before; the difference is the degree of theft and this is what that article is about, as both Gears and Tomb Raider (and Uncharted) are different enough from it's predecessors to stand out as Unearthed is a clone.

Drake and Lara are treasure hunters and there's where the similarities end. It is obvious you haven't played Uncharted so let me tell you how it plays.

Uncharted is a combination of Gears of War (shooting mechanic), Prince of Persia (platforming) and Indiana Jones (story and characters, it borrows 0% from Tomb Raider. Tomb Raider is pure exploration and generic action while Uncharted is all about story-telling and massive action set-pieces. And if you watch the new Tomb Raider Reboot trailer it is obvious that Crystal Dynamics is trying to copy that too.

Uncharted is VERY similar to Tomb raider. The only difference was uncharted adopted gears of war's shooting/cover mechanics.

The game we are discussing here is not inspired by Uncharted. It is the equivalent of a bootleg knock off made in China. As for it being a clone? From looking at the video it has more in common with Tomb Raider then Uncharted. Just replace the main character with a female character and you would not see too much difference. Obviously Saudi is not going to give their main lead to a female character though.

The animation needs a lot of work as does the collision and modeling. But if it is still in early work then hope that this develpoer can get things fixed.

You can't say that Uncharted does many things differently than Tomb Raider. The biggest difference is the shooting/cover mechanics. The story, family pasts, close friends, betrayals, fortune hunting, platforming, globe trotting, super natural, etc.

No, uncharted isnt exactly original. But YES, this game is imitating the uncharted series particularly.

Gears isnt exactly original either, big guys shooting monsters. But guess what, Quantum theory was clearly very influenced by gears in particular. Just like this game is influenced by uncharted in particular.

Almost no games are original today, but many have a individual overall feel, and this is going for the uncharted feel. Even how the character talks to himself is just like in uncharted. Uncharted didnt invent talking to yourself, but its clear that this game is trying to do as much like uncharted as possible.

Sure Uncharted may borrow some from Tomb Raider, and a little from Indiana Jones etc etc. I just don't see how anyone can defend something that has blatantly stolen so much. As someone pointed out that trailer was also incredibly similar to uncharted's, and even something small like the font they couldn't even diverge a little.

I'm all for games coming from all parts of the globe, but not like this. This is something bad, this shouldn't be allowed.

Derrr, the trailer is crap and derivative of Uncharted's, the character models are incredibly derivative of Uncharted's, the gun models are awful, the animation is awful, AND it's a copy paste job of Uncharted.

This is blatant, don't give them a pass because they are from where you live. I didn't buy Full Auto, even though it was developed right here in Toronto. At that time the Xbox 360 was starving for games too.

Also games with a small budget, you're going to find a lot of those assets are final. That's how bad it looks, sorry.

Wow, people are judging it before it is even out. Sure it looks like Uncharted, very much so, but that alone is not reason to bash something which you haven't even played. It seems like an Indie game, might be priced at no more than $20, it shouldn't be though. They can't expect it do well at any higher price point than that.

Uncharted wasn't exactly original either, its execution was excellent though. I love Uncharted, but that's no reason to be so harsh on these guys. Although, it looks like it could use some work to compete with current gen games. Evenso, it's good to see a game from a different culture.

Just be open minded for once.

Finally, someone who makes sense. As far as I understand it's an indie title and it's made by amatures so people need to cut them some slack. Let's all remember how 3D games started (They didn't start with Uncharted-level graphics. They were even worse than this game.) And only if any of the haters knew what goes into developing 3D games... It's really not easy when you're new to making games. Most indie devs usually start by making 2D games.

As these guys are new to this industry and are making their first title a 3D game and with their own engine I would say they did a pretty decent job. The game might not be of quality and may even be total crap compared to most other western and Japanese games at least it's a start and in the right direction.

Why do I see a lot of people saying Uncharted took gameplay from Gears? The games play nothing alike AT ALL. Gears is a slow grinding 3rd person shooter while Uncharted is more fluid gameplay style... Uncharted was well into its dev cycle before Gears even came out. It is not like Gears used anything new to the genre other than add REALLY HUGE character models. Don't get me wrong I enjoy both games, but you can not compair the two other than saying they are both 3rd person...

This is game produced by a country that doesn't have the funding, nor the developmental talent to produce an AAA title. They need to be cut a break here. Yes, it's an Uncharted knock-off, but what else could they have done to grab the attention of the western world?

I probably won't play this game, but it's a massive step in the right direction for gaming in that region.

The name, the typography, the gameplay, some of the camera angles (especially when using your firearms), the environments, the character designs...It's like a chinese rip off of Uncharted. The game does not set itself apart from Uncharted it looks like a clone of Nathan Drake. The graphics looks like something from the PS2 era like an HD remake of the game. And character designs could look better not something out of a Saturday morning cartoon. The only way I might get this game is if its in a bargain bin.
