Confirmed: No 1080p For Battlefield 3 On Consoles, PS3 Footage Is Latest Build

Yesterday it seems as if the entire gaming world was laser-focused on Battlefield 3, as the game’s console footage got its debut on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon two nights ago, and news immediately erupted that there were some console gamers who were disappointed with the showing, mainly because it didn’t look quite as good as the PC footage DICE had been sporting since the game’s unveiling. The developer swiftly responded, stating the obvious that no one should expect console games to look better than the version of a high-end PC. And now we’re getting even more confirmation that the PC version will indeed be the superior one.

Natively, very few games render at 1080p both on PS3 and X360. Some game do 1080p but are mostly donwladable titles that require less resources from the machine allowing 1080p.

It's not all about resolution, Killzone isn't 1080p but has really good looking high-res textures still!

Designing exclusive for a console lets you pull out visual tricks & specific extras they each have to keep the game looking/feeling amazing while still being able to run on a lower spec.. Uncharted 2 is a great example of that.

I think games specifically designed for a console look MUCH better than a generic multiplat game built for PC that can only look good on a high-spec & expensive machine.

I was shocked to find that most games this gen didn't run at 1080p! When I got my TV, I noticed that switching would tell me what it was running.

The majority of the 360 games I played ran at 720p, while the majority of the Ps3 games I played ran at 720p as well.

I thought something was wrong with my TV, because it can display at 1080p! But playing bluray movies shows up at 1080p!

I just downloaded Wipeout HD and played it once, but didn't look to see what it runs at.

Very few games do, but it's almost pointless on a big screen, because 720p will look fine unless you're sitting very close to your big screen TV. I'd rather have 720p with no framerate issues than 1080p any day, Wipeout HD does look good, but it doesn't have to render too much on screen at once, so it never slows down. Plus it dynamically changes resolution with you knowing to compensate for slowdown.

If a game can do both on consoles, then good on it.

Depends on the console, I'd say. High production games run full 720p like KZ(2/3), UC2/3, inFamous, Socom4 (yes, that, too), etc and usually do not tear (steady 30fps without a hitch).

But no, none of those games runs 1080p (all those run 3D, though, which has higher bandwidth requirements than 720p).

Still people think they would expect 1080p from these machines? When Microsoft launched they said it is unrealistic and that nearly every game will aim for 720p between 360 and PS3. This game was never going to be 1080p on console, not in a million years.

Anyone taking one look at what was being achieved on PC with BF3 could see that they were going for maximum quality and not maximum resolution or framerate, thus the only option would be 720p or lower on console.

This game is merely making clear the gap between the consoles and PC, because not only will the game look like the PC shots we have all seen, it'll be expected to run in 1080p and over 30 frames a second for many PC gamers.

If anyone thinks that the consoles are not that far behind PC technology still, then maybe finally they will change their opinion...

Polygons shouldn't really matter (still the same amount of poly's regardless of resolution - at least in 1080vs720, you'd probably render less in lower resolution(s)). It is the level of detail, though, and in relation to that this has an impact on the fill rate. Higher res, more memory, higher fill rate requirements. This combined with more effects on a per pixel basis (shaders, etc) has an impact on the resolution. Some of the true 1080 games render almost flat surfaces, with some reflections etc, but no sophisticated lightning, etc.

AKA Upscallable resolutions, not native.

The game will only support 720p output. Output being the key word that makes me conclude they are talking about output resolutions, not Native game resolutions.

A great example of a non native 1080p game running in 1080p is ironically Call of Duty. Another is Grand Theft Auto 4. Both non-native 1080p that can be displayed in 1080p.

Its not the fact that PC runs better thats causing the issue, its the fact DICE and EA were touting the PC version of it for months on end. Remember when Killzone 2 was first announced and it looked godly, then when everyone realized it was all pre rendered everyone freaked.

Battlefield's roots are from the PC, plus in has all the tech DICE needed to do justice with a sequel to Battlefield 2.

Also, strong communities on consoles usually favor shooters like Halo and Modern Warfare, and their arcade gameplay. Converting them to BF3 won't be an easy task, if at all, achievable.

But what about details? According to Steam, the majority of PC gamers are still running a 9800GT from Nvidia. Sure it could probably run B3 in 1080p at 60 frames, but at what visual quality? Very low I'd assume. But even being modest, your not going to get the full visual experience on an older generation card.

1080p and Framerates aren't everything. And of the the two, framerates are more important.

For PC guys, if you need an upgraded Grahpics Card, given your CPU wont bottleneck it. Check out the MSI 560 ti Twin Frozr II. Arguably the best performance to dollar card on the market with awesome cooling and overclocking headroom.

I have rigged my ps3 to my monitor which displays @ 1440x900 2ms on PC. Ran it in 720p, slightly off due to native rez being higher. ran PS3 at 1080p looks crystal clear.

Also have plasma HD. 720p or 1080p and looks fantastic.

The difference between the i5 2500k and i7 2600k is way too marginal considering the extra $100. Unless your using it for heavy video editing, or other things that could benefit from hyperthreading or the extra 2MB of L3 cache, it's not worth it.

I can't tell you how disappointed I was when I played Crysis 2, and I realized that I wasn't getting the full experience.

Its logical that a AAA game is not full HD native on PS3.
Even if GOW 3 and GT5 were 1080P they still werent Full HD, nor did I care because they were sharp and yet smooth looking.

As long as it isnt SUB HD like say COD, Crysis 2 or HALO 3 Ill be perfectly fine.

704P is okay, though its just below of being HD.

The standard screen resolution on the market at the time a Console launches will decide the Native resolution of most games coming for it.

Therefore a few games are some variant of 1080P or just below Sub HD. though the real standard is 720P.
720P is the standard tv resolution, and people are fine with it, simple as that.

Wii- U, PS4 and the next xbox will have at least 1080P as standard while some games again will run at higher resolutions natively if higher res screens comes to the market in the near future.
But also expect resolutions like GOW 3 and GT5 wich by then would be just sub standard.

Im getting BF3 for PC, maybe for my ps3 too, but I kind of got to wait and see.

The 1080p thing for BluRay only applies for movies.. For games, all developers store their resolutions in memory. BF3 is a really demanding game (Deferred rendering, destructible environments, HDR, etc..) having to store a 1080p frame buffer will cost massive amounts of memory and bandwidth on both consoles.

Makes me wonder why I got a 1080p tv, because that's a premium over 1080i and 720p. Almost NOTHING is in native 1080p except bluray movies and a FEW games (mostly the downoadable variety). TV is in 1080i or 720, most and the best games are in 720 or lower, older bluray movies don't even NEED 1080p, because that's not going to help them out any over 1080i or 720p, etc.

The game looks perrfectly fine to me.
What do some of you guys do? Watch the video with diagnostic tools? It looks and probably plays like a PS3 game. We play them and they're fun. Who cares about the specs? Specs don;t mean shit when you're immersed in the game and enjoying it. Unless you're sick in the head and you're the guy who needs the latest and greatest to fill an emotional issue. Just sayin', the game looks fun to me.

What the f***. Who are the idiots thinking the ps3 version would look anything like the PC version.
Makes me embarrased as a Ps3 owner that theres stupid gamers out there giving dice sh!t.

It would probably be on par with most third-party games.

Earlier today I asked one of the senior devs at DICE "is the game still fun?" (paraphrasing)... his reply:

"It's a freaking blast. Gameplay intensity and feeling is 100% intact on console."

People should be happy that the game has a solid frame rate on the PS3. I mean they could have pulled a crysis and made it sub HD with a choppy 24 FPS. But i prefer my games to play smoothly. Besides it still looks nice on the PS3.

To be honest, I grew tired of military shooters already, they need to be reinvented which is difficult due to their rigid adherence to realism and real military combat culture as well as lack of fantasy-fiction touch through which new gameplay ideas, environments, set-pieces and exotic characters can be created.I think the accessibility and fluid 60 fps multiplayer action in CoD and the more tactical vehicle-laden gameplay of Battlefield were the cause for this sub-genre boom in recent years, and moving forward, I feel that these series will grow ever more stale because they will be always grounded in military realism, which limits the ability of change.
