Battlefield 3: PC and PS3 Comparison.

Today the PS3 demo of BattleField 3 was shown off. Here are a few picture showing off some of the differences between the PC and the PS3 version. Not only does some of the lighting look different, but literally some of the buildings are completely different.

I agree it does look great on Console, obviously the PC does bring it to a new standard but that's to be expected of a game utilizing 2011 tech to the max, but the Ps3 version is Great. These are right after you save the guy, notice the shadow of the guns? Well they also back away a little in the PS3 demo and PC one to show that the gun is indeed floating.

Don't get me wrong the Console PS3/360 version looks good but it in no way comes close to the PC version.

EA needs to quit this crap. They did it with BFBC2. BF3 looks a hair better than MOH and BFBC with some nicer animations.

Starting with Cysis 2 , The Witcher and this one, the difference between PC and consoles start widening noticeably, even more when you play on a big TV. I think we're ready for a next-gen :D

Well my pc is limited and shit I can witcher 2 at 800x600 resolution with low settings and same to crysis 2 which look worse than the console version.I have to buy a $500 graphics card (for the long run to play future games) to get the unlimited power that I cant afford.The only thing I hate abut pc is U hav upgrade ur graphics card for every 2yrs.I rather buy the console version of battlefield 3 than the pc version which I have to upgrade my pc.

U don't need a $500 card to max those games out. A $300 (current price of a ps3) card will allow u to max most games at 1080p for about 2 years and allow u to run games at medium/high settings (which still looks much better than consoles) for another year or 2 after that. Honestly, PC gaming isn't as expensive as people make it out to be. Sure, a few people like to splurge on their PC's but they don't represent everyone.

Your so wrong its funny lol. My cards are 3 years old and i still max everygame. Im just upgrading for BF3 because 3 cards use so much power and generate alot of heat. I run witcher 2 on uber settings at 1080P and thats on 3 yr old cards. I dont have to upgrade i just want a powerful single card with direct x11. If not for that i dont have to upgrade at all. Im getting 100 fps at 1080p in all of todays newest games but my cards are too damn hot and one card is alot less trouble.

Yeah you can see that on the screens with the tree, where the building is casting a shadow. In the PS3 shot it's light and PC it has the correct shadow.

You can especially tell from the inside shot with the shelf. PC shadow, PS3 no.

Other wise it looks great, wonder how old this build is.

Captain-obvious is right, you can tell all the shadows in the PS3 version are going in a different direction, most likely meaning they changed the time of day, the game is looking great though, just would rather DICE post HD pictures of both instead of looking at these low res pictures, and hopefully if that does happen someone will post pics of it side by side, instead of having to open two links and click back and forth..

Shadows die off over long distances, and seeing enemies is often easier by decreasing general world detail than shadows.

I usually turn down shadows because in most games, low-res shadows are blurrier and look more natural than the sharp-edged hi-quality shadows.
Judging by the screenshots, seems like BF3 is one of the few games that actually gets shadow blurring right.

I keep my graphics turned all the way up, on a good monitor you have no problem spotting people. Bad company 2 runs at 60fps locked when everything is turned on max so i never have a problem seeing other players.

Different time of day on the PS3 version (different Sun global light position); the HDR and bloom is probably just overexposing the wall and masking out texture detail.

The different lighting probably accounts for many of the differences people are noticing in the shadows being cast as well.

i'm not trying to be overly into this, but lighting has always been one of the things i like most about rendering tech...

the PC versions lighting is confusing me...in both screens where you can notice the PS3 lacking a shadow under the shelf on the upper right...why does the PC version have a shadow there anyway?...the time of day does seem slightly different based on the angle of shadows outside of the building you are standing in (the PC versions shadows are slightly farther out)...but in either case the sun seems to be located at 7-8 oclock to your player's view...as in coming in from the upper left of the screen...what is making a shadow come from the opposite direction on the shelf?...a light or something behind you?

In games shadows are processed separately from light. You can choose to use light positioning and intensity to help determine your shadows but this is more intensive on the hardware. The shadow on the bookshelf facing an opposite direction is prob an artist mistake.

They've done a logical job with the PS3 version, a smarter engine port than Crytek's game on console. It still looks phenomenally better than I expected and seems to run very well (based on those minutes of footage). It's not going to make me skip the PC version though, but it doesn't look like they've sacrificed too much to bring it to the masses.

Things don't work like that..Crytek run out of memory and couldn't use te spu's for improving the graphics,. Bf3 is alot more scripted and saves more memory for this kind of stuff ..

Crysis 2 was their first PS3 game, and to my knowledge, it was their first console game too.

Crytek are inexperienced console developers and it shows.

Although Crysis 2 is no console technical marvel, Crytek still did a pretty descent job for their 1st go round though.

Bad Companies destruction was extremely disappointing!

The FPS Red Faction 2 (from back in 2002), had a more realistic & satisfying destruction engine than the Bad Company games.

Bad Company's destruction is poorly scripted, and some explosions don't even even cause damage unless you hit the 'sweet spot'.

As a console only gamer, I'm not sure if I will get this for PS3/360 or Wii U. If the Wii U has better specs (and therefore better graphics) maybe I'll get it for that. I'll also be able to take my game to the bathroom for uninterrupted gameplay :-)

the Wii U will likely be the same since it's in the first wave of Wii U titles, compare the first games for PS3 to games like Uncharted 3 now, devs need to learn what they can do with the hardware before you will see anything spectacular.

Funny story, your laptop will likely have little problem with running BF3 at a high framerate, and at a higher overall detail level then the consoles. Sure it's a high end laptop, but it's still a LAPTOP.

Because u can get a gtx 260 for $100 and easily max out bc2 with a decent quad core CPU. This leads me to believe that he has an older or lower-end card than a 260...which is already 3 years old. I k ow this cuz that's the card I used to play bc2 :)

Even though the PS3 was not direct feed with these shots you can clearly see the difference.

The foliage on PC is far more detailed.
Lighting and shadows look at lot more natural on PC.
PS3 is suffering from major aliasing plus its seems much more muddy and blurry.
Textures are a lot weaker on PS3, including where textures meet up.
M4 looks multiple times more detailed on PC
PS3 does not seems to have Ambient Occlusion
Does not seem to have real-time lighting on PS3 when touch is in uses (no shadows cast around objects)

All in all the PS3 version has stacked up good considering its 6 year old hardware plus this is alpha build.

However compared to the PC its a no contest.

Am I the only one who finds it amusing to read all the ways the PS3 guys, are sounding like they make the 360 guys out to be, when it's a game with better graphics of the same game on the PS3 over the 360? :D I find it hilarious to see the turn around. It's usually the PS3 guys waiving their arms around and hollering that it looks better than the 360 version of the game when you zoom in 200%.

And now, it's easy to see that the CPU version of the game easily looks way better than the PS3 version, and that means the 360 version too... except for now, PS3 fans can't take that same heat they give the 360 boys on graphics for the same games. It's come full circle, and I can appreciate the irony. :D

Sure it's not going to have the bells and whistles that the PC version will have, but it proves one point. There isn't a large enough gap, that's why MS and Sony have not announced their new consoles and they shouldn't. The new consoles should be available once we hit a large enough gap where its evident to the untrained eye. IMO.

Have to give PS3 credit though it scales well for a console going on 5 years old. I have a feeling the PS3 version will look better then the 360 version. It's hard to imagine that Frostbite 2.0 won't take advantage of the extra PS3 power.

I am a former PS3 owner and looking at the countless 360/ps3 comparisons, even in games like Red Dead Redemption where there was a big difference, it didn't matter to me. Great graphics are a bonus, gameplay is what matters.

Plus, solid performance is what I value, I don't care if there is aliasing, pop in, HDR or a low level of detail as long as the game stays above 30fps.

I'll be picking up BF3 for PC. I don't actually have a choice really, but I doubt it would be any different if I did.

Seems like some people are ticked off that they didnt show the 360 version. They should relax i bet the 360 version will look just as good as the PS3 one. The reason why they havent shown it is because it isnt ready yet. The PC demonstration of Battlefield 3 blew my mind...

PS: Those screenshots are way too blurry (taken from a cam obviously) so I'd wait a bit for the usual "PS3 vs PC vs Xbox360" comparisons.

PS3 and 360 can produce visuals similar to PC. It's the res and the framerate what will make a difference. Expect PC>360>PS3. It's all about the better GPU. Some like to blame developers for not using PS3's potential. Instead, blame Sony for not anticipating what developers would do. Best bang for the buck is what any business would do.

Well Sony could have beefed up the GPU a little bit, but still it would be weak compared to today's modern GPUs. Instead they went for a wildcard with the cell and made lots of new things possible, but not feasible to implement for most. Most of PS3's price came from the blue ray drive, the processor has a transistor count that isn't that much higher than the 360's, most of the costs came from developing the chip.

I get all games on PS3 since my 360 has died like 5 times! But these PS3 to PC pics are stupid. You cant compare the 2. Hell the PC version will look better than the 360 version also. So whats the point of this stuff

I can't believe anyone is complaining about the PS3 version. It looks great. You can't see much difference between it and the PC version in those photos. And since you'll be running around most of the time does it really matter?

Well, this article proves the obvious. The PC version shits on the Ps3 version. Ps3 version still looks awesome though.

I think many people Dl'ed the PC version and thought in illusionary ways that the console version would look that good. I always told myself it wouldn't look that good on PS3....

Yet, this was EA's strategy, to show the best version and gain general support. Bet we won't see anymore footage til the month before

It's nice for PC gamers to get something that actually looks better. Console version still looks good, and it's fairly early.

The game looks good on PS3. Not better then PC. This comparison wasn't meant to be graphical, more like spot the differences (which they make out saying different shadow and buildings)
