Ubisoft explains 360/PS3 snub for Beyond Good & Evil 2

Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still in development, but won't be appearing on this generation of consoles. Speaking to VideoGamer.com at E3, Michel Ancel, creator of Rayman and Beyond Good Evil, has elaborated as to why.

"We can't say it's really only next-gen." he said, "We need to reconsider the target platform because I have a very specific idea of that game. On high-end PCs we can already play the game, but it's very hard to say 'we'll cut that, that and that to make it fit into another platform'".

"On top of that you have the interface which is another question. Yes, we need to take the time to find the right target for this game."

At least you know they're being ambitious right?

dragunrising4692d ago

If the Wii U is powerful enough it could come out sooner than later. After the 360 Fusion and PS3 Vision (my made up names) come out it could then get ported. Or perhaps Ubisoft might keep BGE2 in the oven till all the next gen consoles are out for simultaneous release...

If they're being ambitious we have something to look forward to :-)

dangert124692d ago

I would much rather this then content be cut and give us a half hearted game...but like they say about current gens costing abit to much...its gas man because all the devs are ready to make the cross over it seems well the bigger ones and the small ones can two next gen it may be easier for them to dev games on all 3 platforms if everyone takes notice of what happend with the ps3 and

Jack-Dangerously4692d ago

What platform was the original on? (not seriously asking)

*sad face*

Redempteur4692d ago

the original had a multiplatform release ..it came on PC, PS2 , gamecube and maybe xbox 1 ( not sure of that one ).

Redempteur4691d ago

2 disagree for saying the truth ? LOL

excerpt from article:
"We can't say it's really only next-gen." he said, "We need to reconsider the target platform because I have a very specific idea of that game. On high-end PCs we can already play the game, but it's very hard to say 'we'll cut that, that and that to make it fit into another platform'"

- Where have we heard about devs cutting content in order for a game to fit on a certain disc medium in order to play a game on a certain console? hmm....

From that clue alone I think you can figure out what obvious target console that they are referring to.

I will give you another hint, it is only 1 out of the 3 major consoles that has this particular problem, and owners of this particular console have been urging the company of this console to upgrade the disc format to a larger format( I hope you owners of this particular console get your wish soon. ).

A7XEric4692d ago

I think you are taking that quote out of context or reading into it the wrong way.

I don't think he's referring to the amount of disc space, since right before he mentions high-end PCs could already play the game. It sounds more to me like he's criticizing the amount of horsepower of current gen systems.

skyblue142134692d ago

@A7XEric
It has been mentioned numerous times that the ps3 is basically technically a super computer with its powerful cell processor and the wii-u is supposedly more powerful than even the ps3 and both of them support the large capacity blue-ray format(in one way or another) in which each blue-ray disc can hold 25 gb or more of data.

So I highly doubt that it is a space or performance issue or any other issue for that matter that would prevent this game from running in it's entirety on either the ps3 or the wii-u. That just leaves the only other console that I did not mention as the suspect on why this game is being held back this generation concerning this game being on consoles.

Active Reload4692d ago

People sound like retards when they act as if the PS3 is on the level of a high end PC. No...just no...

AhnnQuirajj4692d ago

They can always find more DVDs but if the brunt and power isn't there to push and run the content then there's no point for it this gen.

Sadface.

skyblue142134692d ago

@Active Reload

-That was not what I was trying to imply, you need to look at my whole comment with an unbiased perspective and not just notice the ps3 part of it. You would notice that I included both the the ps3 and the wii-u as being powerful so I don't know where you get your assumption of me only saying that the ps3 is powerful.

But lets face it there are many articles that are around the internet that claim that the ps3 is technically a super computer and is powerful by today's standards that are not gaming related and me or anyone else are not retarded for stating that fact.
for example:

Now those articles are old , but the ps3 is still considered the most economical super computer on the market.

Active Reload4692d ago

I know the PS3 is powerful, but I also know that it's a system that is bottlenecked to hell. It has all that processing power but most of it goes to waste because of the way the RAM is built into it.

yamzilla4692d ago

good, expect to be hearing this from more and more devs, this is what going beyond the 5 year table for a refresh of consoles will do to you

games like battlefield 3, metro2033, the witcher 2 so far outclass what the current consoles are capable of.

todays bottom of the barrel laptops can run most of todays AAA titles at console like settings
1024x720p at 20-30 frames with zero anti aliasing

Man, i hope to hear this again and again from devs!!

fluffydelusions4692d ago

I have a gaming pc and ps3. Current consoles are expensive enough as are game prices. Next Gen will be worse so I can wait a couple more years.

Max_Dissatisfaction4692d ago

Skipping an entire generation is a very bad move. See Duke Nukem Forever

Redempteur4692d ago

not when you have a talent game designer behind a project ...

Duke nukem just had too many changes to hope to have something good ..

That is not the case HERE

pr0digyZA4692d ago

Nah sounds like this is being built from the ground up as a next gen project (duke nukem had other problems) I think there will be a lot of companies that are also doing this behind the scenes. Even Todd Howard said they were considering putting skyrim on the next gen consoles and who knows maybe they have fallout 4 set to launch on the new consoles.

Five Big Games Still Lingering Somewhere in Development Hell

This year promises to be a big year for gaming, and it will definitely be one of the greatest if any of these big MIA projects finally made it into gamers' hands.

Pretty sure Silk Song and Dragon Age are going smoothly. The other 2 can be assumed to be quietly cancelled knowing their publishers and Metroid will most likely be shown off this year.

Michiel198994d ago

Dragon Age going smoothly??? Directors leaving, people leaving in general, terrible working conditions....not sure how you define smoothly.

Chocoburger95d ago

I remember in 2017 when Nintendo showed off the Metroid Prime 4 logo, and some Nintendo defenders claimed "Just because they only showed a logo, doesn't mean that's all they've worked on for the game."

As history has proven, they were wrong. Nintendo showed off a logo back in 2017 because that's literally all they had.

-Foxtrot95d ago

I think Beyond Good and Evil 2 can stay there unless they are going to just rename it to a new IP

DOMination-94d ago

Pretty sure BG&E2 is dead at this point - along with the other game Ancel was working on before he left - I think it was called WILD. Anyone remember that from a PS conference years ago?

Dreadwolf isn't in development hell anymore and is finally getting its reveal in the summer - since 2016 the game has been scrapped and restarted three times but its been going pretty well since the last reboot when EA finally allowed BioWare to just get on with making a single player game.

I'm not sure Perfect Dark is in development hell either - like it could be but we haven't really heard much to suggest either way - imo they just showed the trailer off when the game was still in pre-production. Xbox were desperate for anything and this is all they had at the time. And the reason we haven't heard anything since is just because it's in normal development and games take 5 years to make. The help from a support studio was typically overblown on N4G because nearly every game has this.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 Is Now the Most Delayed AAA Game Ever

Ubisoft's action-adventure even beats Duke Nukem Forever which previously was the title with the longest wait between a game being first announced and it actually being released.

x_xavier_x563d ago

I understand that the original game is held in high esteem by some passionate fans. I tried to get into it on several occasions and I just lost interest after a few hours of gameplay.

Abracadabra563d ago

Beyond Good & Evil was a great game at the time... but, like most older games, it didn't age well. Gameplay and graphics are subpar by today's standards.

Wouldn't mind if they made a Remake with updated gameplay and graphics. Game turns 20 next year...

x_xavier_x563d ago (Edited 563d ago )

I feel the same way about the original Psychonauts. I gave it a shot every few years, and it just wasn't for me.

MadLad563d ago

I find it still very playable by today's standards, honestly.

But opinions are opinions.
I just feel it actually aged well.

Godmars290563d ago

Its was great middleware that someone thought would make for an even greater AAAA title.

For some reason...

0hMyGandhi563d ago

Beyond Good and Evil aged just fine, as did the original Psychonauts. Visually, sure, a bit rough (though both have a wonderfully refreshing art style that more than makes up for actual "visual fidelity".)

I'd say that you really need to give both of these games another shot. Psychonauts is one of the most original and utterly creative games I've ever played, and it's also one of the funniest as well. Psychonauts 2 was even better, and basically, a (well made) Pixar movie brought to life.

In all honesty, don't just play games and try to like them if you don't actually like them. It's perfectly fine to have your own tastes! we tend to use a tremendous amount of hyperbole when referring to games that are slightly older, and we speak only from memory, which *can* be deceiving.

I will say that I replayed the first Psychonauts again in the last few months, and still adore it. But like I said, this is all subjective.

563d ago
poppatron562d ago

I gave up on the og psychonauts after about 5 or so hours because like many many people those weird sluggish controls just got the better of me while trying to get through some of the more testing platforming and swinging around parts.

BgaE I got way further in enjoyed, I think I saved it off in the end because something I was more interested in came out. The sequel looks like a completely different type of game in genre and scope, to the point it looked pretty ground breaking I thought. I’m still super low key excited for it, although I wouldn’t be surprised if next time it reared it’s head it looked very very different.

EazyC563d ago

It's an age thing. I'm always reminded of this when I whip out the old PS2, the vast majority of 3D games from the '00s just haven't aged well.

Good-Smurf563d ago

I have same feeling over Code Veronica X fans loved it to bits while I'm came out of it confused and disappointed.
I never played Beyond Good & Evil and I might get give it a try soon.

deleted563d ago

Cancel it or change the name for all I care. This isn't the Beyond Good & Evil I fell in love with.

Si-Fly563d ago

Weird take. Whilst we didn’t get proper gameplay reveals it looked very much how I would want BG&E to look now.

-Foxtrot563d ago (Edited 563d ago )

So you wanted an ambitious open world Beyond Good and Evil sequel that gameplay differs from the original and has no clear vision so far if it's a prequel (which no one wanted) or a sequel (with an evil Jade where she's not the main character, which no one wanted)

All people wanted was a full on sequel that's a platformer and continues Jades story.

-Foxtrot563d ago

Exactly

It's not Beyond Good and Evil

They had an idea for an ambitious new IP and thought it would sell better or had more of a safety net if they slapped on a franchise name.

isarai563d ago

Seriously, has absolutely nothing to do with the original other that a loose cameo.

CrimsonWing69563d ago (Edited 563d ago )

How hard is it to make a game like the original? Nobody wanted anything different and these idiots just insist on trying to make something completely unrelated AND they don’t even know what to make! So, yea, here we go with the delays. Ubisoft can be such an obnoxious publisher/developer.

InklingGirl563d ago

Just leave it alone, the original is a classic lets not ruin it.

Exvalos563d ago

I'm more worried about how fast that time went i still remember it being announced there is no way that was that many years ago NO WAY!

Beyond Good And Evil 2 Starts External Playtesting

Although Beyond Good and Evil 2 has had its problems, it has officially been confirmed by Ubisoft that it is still in active development.

Terry_B648d ago

It never looked like a Beyond Good and Evil game even.

TheExecutioner647d ago

Do you know that first game came out 2003 by the time this game released i would be probably 40.
Now majority of gamers who played the first one are not going even bother playing now.

This game is a refreshing and wants to be more appealing to all gamers.

Concertoine647d ago

I just don’t see a reason why it cant be a new IP in that case.

Terry_B647d ago

..and? do you think it looks like a game that appears to all gamers? Unlike the first part it gets mostly negative feedback, even from people that never played the first game.

Michiel1989647d ago

@Terry they also didnt play the 2nd.....

maelstromb647d ago

If the devs were smart, they'd launch a remake of the original a few months before the sequel to get the fans who have loved the original amped again and to also introduce it to a new generation to get them excited for what's to come. Seems like a win-win to me.

isarai648d ago

Looks like an awesome game, but it has nothing too do with BGE1, or anything to do with what fans wanted.

Yi-Long648d ago

If it would have been a SP action-adventure game like the first one, I would have been excited.
