Has Sony lost faith in Resistance 3?

Chief flop at Sony’s E3 press conference had to be Resistance 3′s paltry showing. The (undoubtedly talented) folks at Insomniac are going to have to up their game if Resistance is ever to live up to the ‘PS3’s answer to Halo’ mantra | FPS Tribe

Of course they haven't lost faith. The Resistance IP is one of Sony's most valuable commodities.

Nitrowolf24694d ago

wow since when is bundling something bad? Was Sony loosing faith when they bundled the PS3 with 3DTV? What about they had had Uncharted 3 bundles at launch?
No this is an attempt to get more gamers to go 3D.

zootang4694d ago

I thought it looked better than Uncharted 3. Am I missing something here?

WildArmed4694d ago

loool Exactly.
Bundling a game never means that they don't have faith in the game.

WTF is wrong w/ journalism these days.

Fail logic is fail.

kikizoo4694d ago

Don't talk "logic" with trolls, especially the one living in the opposite world of ms, where inferior is better.

Army_of_Darkness4694d ago

I'm sure its because sony had to much to show like someone stated above... I honestly can't wait to get my hands on R3!! It looks amazing graphically n gameplay compared to r2... I just hope that its a longer story mode.

ikkokucrisis4694d ago (Edited 4694d ago )

I have lost faith in Insomniac. The first one was promising, the second was very underwhelming, and this third one looks to be more of the same.

Their design team needs to focus on making either single player or multi player amazing. Their strength is obviously their game engine, but their weakness is their level design, texture quality, and gameplay. These are all things that can be improved if they just focus their resources into one type of game mode.

Most of the greatest games ever made only did either single player or multi player really well.

M-Easy4694d ago

Why does EVERY SINGLE PS3 shooter have to be a answer for Halo or a Halo killer. Sony never claims these things its always the gaming "journalist." Halo is not even the top shooter anymore it COD.

ZombieNinjaPanda4694d ago

>Uncharted 3 Bundles at launch

...Is this the future??

Pintheshadows4694d ago

Agreed. Bundles are a win for everyone. Silly article.

pangitkqb4694d ago

I couldn't disagree with this article more. The conclusions don't make sense.

Tru_Ray4693d ago (Edited 4693d ago )

This is one of the dumbest articles of the E3 2011 era. Sony showcased this game right after U3, which is undoubtedly their flagship title for 2011. They would not bundle the game with a 3D monitor if they didn't think the game was a great showcase for 3D gaming technology.

The gaming media is notoriously jaded, so we should hardly interpret their muted response as representative as how the gaming community at large feels towards a game.

I do agree that the presenter from Insomniac did a horrible job. He told at least three jokes and they all fell flat. However, the game looks freaking awesome!!!

Next time they should get Ted Price up there. He must have been too busy promoting Overstrike.

I kid, I kid...

nopunctuation4694d ago

Resistance isnt the heart and soul of PS3, it could have been but then resistance 2 came out and we all know what happened there. Sony has a lot to show and dont rely on any one game to push the playstation 3.

MONOLITHICIDE4694d ago

so what happened there exactly, I thought the game was awesome!

nycrekid4694d ago (Edited 4694d ago )

Just because he read some reviews that didn't like the game he thinks the game sucks. I happen to like Resistance 1 AND 2 alot!

Peaceful_Jelly

Try reading comprehension. I don't where you read it but Not I or Monolith or nopunctuation stated that resistance was "great". It wasn't but by all mean it was not bad like some people make it out to be. It was fun, challenging and entertaining.

Maybe it's just cause I don't over analyze games and try to just have fun with it (it's just games man) but if I have fun with a game I generally like it. Not to mention I liked the story.

If you went into every game expecting greatness then you will be dissapointed more often than. not.

Peaceful_Jelly4694d ago (Edited 4694d ago )

If you thought Resistance 2 was great then you must be a huge fan of generic games or something. Resistance 2 art direction changed for the worse, the story was your typical sci-fi shooter and they ditched the weapon wheel and health bar to follow the trend of current-gen shooters.

Now for Resistance 3 Insomniac went back to a more unique art style, more human story, the health bar is making a comeback and the same with the weapon wheel... On top of that they are adding new chimera classes, weapon upgrades, more menacing looking alien weapons, new cinematic approach, bigger maps, better post-processing effects and stuff. They are going back to what made the first Resistance great and unique while improving it tenfold.

tigertron4694d ago (Edited 4694d ago )

I'll tell you what happened there. Resistance 2 changed so much you could barely call it a Resistance. The art style change, the method of story telling changed, the atmosphere changed, the gameplay was different etc, and the whole game just felt like a let down. Maybe thats just me (and some others here by the looks of it) but RFOM is one of my favourite games of all time.

R2 seemed to have been created to cater for the COD crowd, and it shows. Fortunatly the franchise was fixed by Retribution, which returned the franchise to its FOM roots.

I'm praying R3 is like RFOM.

DaTruth4694d ago

I didn't read any reviews and I thought it was lacking and never revisited it!(and I'm the type of gamer who never sells games and always plays them several times)

I don't know if it paled in comparison to R1, or if R1 was just so early in the life of the PS3 that it seemed better than it was, but R2 just didn't live up to R1 and was a big disappointment; Its actually making me question whether to just rent R3... and I almost never rent! Although I did enjoy the coop.

I still have both in my collection!

persistentlobster4694d ago

http://www.metacritic.com/s...

Yes, I'm gonna be THAT guy who pulls up review scores rather than arguing. They're both great games guy.

Inside_out4694d ago (Edited 4694d ago )

.
Insomniac is going with a multi-platform title and they announced it at the EA E3 press event. Sony thinks Insomniac should keep making games WITHOUT owning the ips and have no future if Sony decides to hand the production to some other outfit...you know like they are doing with Uncharted and the vita thingy.

It is crazy to me to think how many years and blood sweat and tears Insomniac wasted on Sony with NO IPS to show for it. The only thing crazier was media molecule selling their IP to Sony for peanuts AFTER it had already won numerous awards and was destined for multi-platform heaven...that my friends is a dumb as it gets. I can't wait for the day when Sony gives that IP to someone else...lol

Bungie is on the same path as Insomniac and I wish them the best of luck. If you made/created the IP Sony, MGS or Nintendo should NOT own it just because they publish it.

SilentNegotiator4694d ago

Resistance 2 was by no stretch "Bad", but it wasn't like Resistance:FOM at all. They tossed out vehicular sections, which I flipping loved. They had lots of cool bosses, but they were so simple to beat and quick. And many were understandably annoyed that it wasn't as gritty as the first game.

I didn't feel like R2 improved in any way.

khellendros14694d ago

I personally thought R2 was better than the first. I played through it more than once and the co-op multiplayer is what finally got me into playing shooters online. I thought the pacing in R2 was better.

mastiffchild4693d ago

Can we stop talking about the Resistance series unfairly? BOTH FoM and R2 wre rushed out at Sony's insistence-FoM for launch and R2 to give KZ2 it's moment in the sun away from Gears2. They were rushed and as a direct result lacked the polish we Insomniac fans expect from them-R3 hasn't this issue and will blow people away and finally be the game the premise and talent at Ted's place merit it be-great.

No one EVER claimed it as a Halo killer or Sony's Halo answer.EVER. Only trolling sites did that-in R2's case with a little fairness but only because it flew too close to Bungie's epic in terms of gameplay(two weapons and regen health and more run and gun) , in colours(very Halo palette of day glo unrealism) and in the less gritty approach and focus more on MP(the vast MP 60 player games and excellent and still a great isea squad co-op routines-why ditch the best bit of R2 by a country mile when it could ahve been expanded toa second campaign? EVERYONE liked R2 Co-op even though most like FoM best in SP and overall as MP seemed less frantic and more tactical first time out. Weapon heel, narrator bird and a couple of other things including gritty direction were asked for and most given back for R3 and by not being rushed we will get a GREAT game from Insomniac.

Certainly better than deserves a crappy article like this-who'd approve this shit? How they imagine Sony aren't supporting it with the demo on the BR film disc and the 3DTV bundle and Move/sharpshooter stuff is beyond me. As MS haven't yet announced a bundle for CE remake have they lost faith in Halo? Exactly-don't be so stupid, people, and lets laugh at those approving this cack.

Blacktric4694d ago

If they did, I must say they're pretty stupid to do so. I've played the demo yesterday (downloaded it from Singapoure PSN Store) and it blew me away. It's going to be an awesome game with a great scale at everything and I seriously can't wait. I hope Sony Europe also releases Resistance dual pack so I can catch up with the story.

ElementX4694d ago

To be honest, I haven't been that impressed with the Resistance franchise.

ElementX4694d ago (Edited 4694d ago )

Let me rephrase... Resistance was cool, but I wasn't a fan of Resistance 2. The same way I liked the original Halo, but I didn't like the sequels much (except for Reach). It was just rehashes and minimal improvements.

I'm hoping R3 does something to blow me away. I'm also hoping Halo 4 blows me away like Reach did. I think Halo 2 and 3 were meh. I've spoken before about Bungie's lack of innovation and improvements across the series.

mastiffchild4693d ago

Disagree- R2 was a MAJOR cange in direction which is why most fans preferred the FoM S ansd MP but still had the sense torate that cool co-op idea. A class based co-op that worked, wa fun and the most addictive thing of it's type I ever played but sadly it's gone now-the must have wanted to get totally away fromR2 even though, even now, you can get whatever game you like whenever you like, lag free on dedicated servers with up to 60 players on R2. People, some of them, LOVED the chaos of the HUGE number games.

Anyway, point is Resistance hasn't been incremental changes but revolution every time!! Ironically, pertaining to your post, R2 changed to be more like Halo if anything! Good to see, barring the death of the great co-op for a more dull, mundane one in R3, a return to FoM sensibilities and not Halo3 ones!! Was REALLY hoping they'd expand THAST co-op from R2 rather than ditch the idea, mind and lets hope it appears in their multi which looks amazing too-insomniac rule, srsly!

Ju4693d ago (Edited 4693d ago )

I agree that R2 was a change in direction. I saw Retribution much more connected to FoM than R2 (which interestingly does not have a subtitle). FoM is what got me into shooters. Never played much shooters before. So I owe the Resistance franchise big time.

XabiDaChosenOne4694d ago

@paintsville I see you are trying to increase your bubble.

TheMrMadzen4694d ago

What a fucking joke of an article!!
You obviously bundle something WHEN IT'S GOOD!!!

kickerz4694d ago

Actually I've seen HEAPS of console bundles where they give you 2 crappy games with it.

FACTUAL evidence4694d ago

Bundling would be super smart for new ps3 owners. So they can see how good resistance really is. Was the GT5 bundle bad? Guess sony lost faith in gran turismo as well. /s

the_kutaragi_baka4694d ago

fuck for all haters.

anyway, Killzone 3 is better than Resistence 3 lol

Ju4693d ago (Edited 4693d ago )

That remains to be seen.

Fact is, when R2 and KZ2 released I played the shit out of both, constantly switching betwen them.

trollpolice4694d ago

both resistance were terrible generic FPS games with creative weapons that is all. However Resistance 3 hopes to deliver this time around. Resistance Retribution on PSP was even better. lol

showtimefolks4693d ago

expect it to do well. insomniac have really listed to their fans and what they wanted with resistance 3 and we have a game that look like half-life atmosphere wise.

Bundling is smart online community will be stronger and it will get 3d tech to move along too.

so in short no they are actually doing promotional things for resistance series which is well deserved

ShadowJetX4693d ago

I'm guess R3 didn't get as much face time as some people would have liked. My educated guess would be that R3 isn't that far enough in development yet to warrant to full fledged trailer, when compared to other games like U3 yeah.

avengers19784693d ago

They are using resistance 3 to help push there new TV, and the sharpshooter bundle. I think they have tons of faith in the game, I already have a copy of the game reserved, and any fans of Resistance currently can't wait to play it.

Jonah_Reese4693d ago

I simply cannot figure out the point to this article... If Sony lost faith in the Franchise it would not have been on display, let alone onstage. It seems to me that the only thing this author set out to do was take shots at a franchise he probably just does not like. Rather pointless to me, he didn't even bother to ask a legit question.

*The ensuing 3 minutes of gameplay footage confirmed one thing – Resistance 3 has achieved astonishing new levels of brown. Brown guns, brown buildings, brown aliens, brown hero. And an astonishing amount of un-inspiring, FPS drudgery..

WTf do you expect of course it's gonna be brown after all they're at war what were you expecting the scenery to be like a beautiful sunny day with a double rainbow??

BrianG4694d ago

Haha, the word ATMOSPHERE means nothing to him I suppose.

OH NO, Battlefield 3 is a bunch of silvers, dark greens, off whites and blacks. The game obviously sucks if it doesn't have pink camo or orange buildings.

Obviously sarcasm. Color doesn't equal better story.

Cosmo8114693d ago

That's all well and good - realism means it's better, right? Wrong - not necessarily. Colours that are simply shades of brown become very boring, very quickly - it's actually very easy to mix things up a little. Put a bit of overgrown city in there - plenty of green; you can even have water in there from broken waterpipes, ponds etc. Then have another area that has lots of red fire, maybe some lava or a big boss - it's really not that hard to mix things up, and I do think they're making a mistake in having just browns through the game as it'll make it dull.

Max_Dissatisfaction4694d ago

contrary to gaming popular belief, the sun actually does come out even in war torn countries. Its true, war does not automatically suck out all the colour of the planet.
So yes, it wouldn't be out of place to have sunny skies and double rainbow*
*after it has rained of course

labaronx4694d ago (Edited 4694d ago )

but doesn't this have more to do with atmosphere among all things.....

why are most horror movies are set at night....

would resistance, gears, killzone, etc tone fit if the atmosphere was as bright and colorful as uncharted's

MONOLITHICIDE4694d ago

and how do you know R3 wont, weve seen like two levels, and plus isnt the african prison multiplayer map sunny and yellow.

nycrekid4694d ago (Edited 4694d ago )

Not to mention who ever claim Resistance to be the Ps3's Halo? This douche is just a Halo fanboy cause it's so colorful.

Edit: Also now 3 minute is enough to judge an entire game right? Gaming sites are the scourge of the industry.

TheDivine4694d ago

Double standards much? Gears is hated for muddy colors yet resistance is praised? LOL. I enjoyed both resistance 1 and 2 mainly for the co-op. The campaigns were average and there are much better multiplayer games out although the big player count was cool. The saving grace for resistance is co-op and splitscreen. R3 looks like it might be one to remember though. The multiplayer looks more focused and thats a good thing.

Resistance 3 is such a great game. One of my all time bests.

cooperdnizzle657d ago

Couldn’t agree more. Still love It as a shooter to this day.

Just something about that game. I really wish they would just do a remaster, don’t even need a remake just bring it up to todays out put, touch up a few things if any, and I am there to buy it day one.

Of course I would love a remake built from the ground up. As long as they treated it like Shadow of the Colossus, or close to those type of remake. Wouldn’t want it to get the RE treatment…. Just because the game is already paced so perfect and hits all the right beats that I wouldn’t touch that aspect.

My take:

Single player
3, 2, 1

Multiplayer
3, 1, 2

Overall
3, 2, 1

I beat the lengthy single player in 1 multiple times and spent hours in the online too. Plus 1 featured my home town! Special mention to the audio design in 1: playing that with surround headphones blew me away.

Note: I have the platinum for Resistance 2.

Eidolon714d ago

Resistance 1 MP will always be my favorite. Call it nostalgia or whatever, but that was my jam, felt more balance, natural.

Miraak82 714d ago

i have the platinium too , 10k kills in online ranked matches was no joke . Took me 3-4 months straight grinding but it was fun . To put it in perspective you only got like 25 kills per match if you were 1st place every match that's at Least 400 matches in 1st

Sciurus_vulgaris715d ago

I only played the 3 main Resistance titles. My ranking would be;
1. Resistance 3
2. Resistance: Fall of Man
3. Resistance 2

GoodGuy09715d ago

Man I loved 3's campaign. Another gem stuck on the ps3 and who knows if insomniac will go back to the franchise.

fr0sty714d ago

Resistance, Warhawk, MAG, Motorstorm, there's so many first party gems on PS3 that Sony has just left to die...

P_Bomb715d ago

Never played Burning Skies but I still have Retribution.

monkey602714d ago

Burning Skies was about 3 hours long and rather inconsequential. You haven't missed anything

porkChop714d ago

Honestly, Burning Skies was shit. There's no two ways about it. At first I thought it looked terrible, then I second guessed myself. Big mistake.

darthv72713d ago

Retribution has this really cool feature where you could use a PS3 to link a controller to it and play. So if you had a 2000 or 3000 hooked to a tv, you can use a real controller. All of this predates the PSP Go's ability to sync a sixaxis to it via bluetooth.

Yui_Suzumiya714d ago

Resistance 3 was shocking and brilliant. Loved it.

Why Resistance Was So Incredible

While the studio is best known for Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet, and Clank, and Spider-Man back on the PS3 the studio broke from creating platformers and made one of the highest regarded science-fiction first-person shooters of all time. This was Resistance and it remains one of Sony's most acclaimed and dormant franchises.

Really wish Insomniac would bring back Resistance!

darthv721070d ago

Agreed. Until they do a new entry, I'd love to get the two portable games remade into console versions. Maybe in a nice compilation with the mainline titles.

monkey6021070d ago

Burning Skies wasn't a great game.
It was only a couple of hours long and there was nothing memorable about it.

I'd love a new entry

darthv721070d ago

^monkey, hence why it should be remade into a better version.

SullysCigar1071d ago

Resistance 3's campaign was gorgeous for the time - and an awesome game to boot.

monkey6021070d ago

I remember being put off by it because McHale wasn't the MC but it turned out to be my favourite campaign

CBaoth1070d ago

by and large though the Resistance IP featured many protagonists (4 altogether I think if you include the portables). One of the reasons I enjoyed it was not being shackled to individual story arcs. Very rare for a major franchise.

Army_of_Darkness1069d ago

My favorite resistance game as well! It seriously had creepy, scary a$$ moments bro! It made me want an action horror game from insomniac!

Mr_cheese1070d ago

Remember playing this through online co op with the move controller and gun attachment! What a game!

BlackIceJoe1071d ago

I've said in the past I'd like to see this series return and have it take place years later, like in the present.

I'll give you an example if I'm not mistaken the last game ended in the 50s, so if it was to take place some time in the 2020s you'd have an opportunity to see how the world changed after the fall of Chimera and all the new technology that came out of that war.

Just like in our universe we all know WW2 happened, but we never experienced it, so if the next Resistance game takes place years later so too would people in that universe know a war look place against the Chimera, they just wouldn't know what it really was like.

So getting to see how that universe would respond to the Chimera reemerging would be interesting.

Imagine a little kid talking with his grandfather about the war and the kid just thinks it was just a made up bed time horror story and what was said was worse than what really took place, but now that the Chimera come back the kid will find out why years later the old timer adults were still waiting for the Chimera to return.

I think there is great potential for this series still and I really believe the best way forward for Resistance is make it have a time jump too.

So hopefully this series will return.

Dragonopolis1070d ago

Great Idea. I'd play that version.

Resistance was a great game and of all the remasters.... I would play a great remastered version of resistance series as well

waverider1070d ago

I was blown away when i played for the first time Resistance on the PS3. Great Game. Also liked very much an played for hundred of hours the Co-op of R2. The SP campaign of R3 is also excelent. I really hope that Sony and Insomniac annouced the Remaster of the Series and a new chapter. They got story to do that.

Jambola121070d ago

Resistance 2 was one of the first few games i played on ps3 and I loved it, would definitely finish that again :D

Chevalier1070d ago

I loved all the Resistance games. But part 2 online was amazing. The Marksmen for the Spec Ops type class when it was fully upgraded was such an amazing weapon. Oh man I wish they release all the games again and let us play part 2 online again.
