But Nintendo boss isn't ready to put a ballpark price on the upcoming console

Nintendo all about powerful hardware now.

Active Reload4701d ago

I'm tempted to say that that might be the funniest headline this year xD

Anarki4701d ago

You got lucky with Wii, the only reason it did well was because of the price. If this costs more than a PS3... I have really bad news for you, Nintendo.

StanSmith4701d ago

If this is £250 - £300 then i'll be in day one. Any higher and i'd probably wait until a price drop.

AAACE54700d ago

Like I said... It will cost $400!

"Value for money"... That's what Sony said before we got hit with a $500 price tag!

zeal0us4700d ago

it better be cheap seeing as you(nintendo) aren't selling individual controllers on it.

Minus all the controller hate, kinda didn't expect it to be cheap not with the specs and all, oh w8 what specs they won't release the info on it.

captain-obvious4700d ago

so another 64/gamecube in the making ?

SilentNegotiator4700d ago (Edited 4700d ago )

If it's "on par" with the ps3/360 in power, than I'll bet that controller will end up creating a price barrier.
It would be interesting if this controller, which from E3 is obviously the focus of the system (Like the "revolutionary" Wiimote, lol), ended up being its biggest downfall. Just like how the much weaker, and only about equal in features, 3DS is $250 like its soon-to-be competition, likely thanks to its expensive and ineffective screen.

"If this is £250 - £300 then i'll be in day one"
Seriously? Why would anyone say "Day one" with what we know so far? What games are you going to get? Some game from EA or Ubisoft that released a year ago on the ps3/360? Or was it Lego Theft Auto that made you know you just HAD to have it?

StanSmith4700d ago

I said day one because i like the idea of the controller. We have already been given a good idea what it can do.
Also as an alternative to playing on my PS3 or 360, i sometimes like to just sit back, chill out and play some Mario/Mario kart/Donkey Kong/Metroid/Zelda. If you can tell me where i can play future HD versions of these titles without buying the WiiU then by all means show me. Thats why i can say "Day One" with confidence.

darksied4700d ago

@Marioftw

The problem is how many of those games can you know for sure will actually be available day one, when you buy your console?

StanSmith4700d ago

I'm not saying they will be there day one but they will come. I purchased my PS3 Day one because i knew MGS4 was going to be available on it. All the consoles have lackluster launch line ups but it has never stopped me buying one as there is always some game i know i'll want to play.

Peaceful_Jelly4700d ago (Edited 4700d ago )

I bet the Tablet alone will be like $150... Then at least $200 for the console plus Tax; expect 400 dollars as the least.

Just look at the 3DS compared to the NGP. Same price yet the 3DS can't compete with the NGP in raw specs nor features... But Sony's gonna sell it at a loss, something Nintendo never does.

Ju4700d ago

The controller will be its biggest downfall. It will work for certain games, but for fast action based games it simply detracts from the focus of the big screen. If not utilized properly, this controller would not be the first choice.

First, its not comfi to play a shooter with such a huge controller, and second, imagine to get shot every time you look down on the controller to read some stats.

It'll work great for some games - but imagine, that game stays live while you look at your inventory. And, bam, your dead. Having an inventory on screen forces the action to pause. I don't have a good feeling about that. We'll find out. I like the raw power of the device. Just give me a DS3 with it (not another shitty Nintendo controller).

Peppino74700d ago

Say goodbye to your casual and young audience.

darthv724700d ago

$349-399 tops. They wouldnt even think of going into the 3do/ps3 range or (shutters at the thought) laseractive price range ($1000).

It will be more than the wii was at launch ($299) but will be less than the ps3 was at launch ($499 for the 20gb)

HardCover4700d ago

"Say goodbye to your casual and young audience."

I'm sure third parties will be happy to continue releasing easy-to-develop games for the Wii audience.

thesummerofgeorge4700d ago

I think it'll be a tough sell to the casual gamers if it's more than $300. I'm a bit puzzled by the direction(s) Nintendo seems to be going, but what do I know...

SkyGamer4700d ago

The price for the 60 gb launch ps3 was 599.99. I have one. Got it for free bout a year ago. Nintendo can drop the price of the 3DS once the vita comes out. That means they have a year and drop the price to 199.

fossilfern4700d ago

This whole Wii U announcement was poorly handled and Nintendo need to get this system out soon if its out near the end of 2012 thats a big problem because Sony and MS could have anounced their new systems

RankFTW4700d ago

Well I think it's time we all got 2nd and 3rd jobs.

darthv724700d ago

if you have a ps3 then you already should.

BYE4700d ago

Current gen hardware. Can't you do better Nintendo?

ZombieAssassin4700d ago

I have a feeling NiN is not going to want to lose money on every console sold so they'll prolly charge between 350-450$

badz1494700d ago

even Kinect is sold for $150! what makes anybody thinks the Wii U controller will cost less?? and that's not even counting in the console itself yet!

pain777pas4701d ago

If they pack enough VALUE in the box I am still listening but listening only. Show me the games at TGS thanks!

eagle214700d ago

Cheap to him could be $199. You never know. I say $349...because that's not "cheap"..nor too expensive.

AWBrawler4700d ago (Edited 4700d ago )

competitively priced to 360 and PS3? I say between $350-$400

banking on $350

theonlylolking4700d ago

They over price the 3ds so they will probably over price this as well.

FYI the 3ds costs $100 to make.

StbI9904700d ago

Nintendo is bound to fail this gen, would love to see nin fanboy crawl back to humbleness once again in a while lololol

NESpower4700d ago

Yeah, with the Wii now outselling 360 again...the Wii U is going to "fail"? Buddy, I "fail" to see your logic. If anything, the Wii U will have a massive lead that both sony nor microsoft will be able to catch. And even if Wii U trumps PS3 in specs, then gets trumped by PS4 in specs...who cares? The weakest console has always won.

stuntman_mike4700d ago

@nespower

sales numbers doesnt matter to real gamers. we go where the games are be it Wii, PS3, 360 ect.

White-Sharingan4700d ago

@NESpower - Are you done sucking on Nintendo's balls?

"the Wii U will have a massive lead that both sony nor microsoft will be able to catch."

Lead in what? sales? sure, games? nah. When MS and Sony eventually release their consoles, they will probably be beast consoles compared to the Wii U, and the same cycle will happen all over again: devs will cease to support the Wii U in favor for the other two powerful consoles..

" The weakest console has always won."

I don't even know how to respond to this, because of the sheer stupidity that's in this single sentence. You actually believe that history will repeat itself over and over and over again? you actually believe nintendo will be the dominant handheld king for eternity? I bet most thought the same thing about Nintendo consoles...before playstation arrived ;)

You don't know what the future brings, you don't know who will be the dominant one. You don't know if a new company will rise. Nintendo could fall one day, just like Sega.

ZombieAssassin4700d ago

"the same cycle will happen all over again: devs will cease to support the Wii U in favor for the other two powerful consoles.. "

Actually I see the 360/ps3 getting a lot of support still after Ps4/NextBox and since the WiiU prolly won't be tooo much more powerful they'll put the games on their as well. Don't get me wrong I think it's stupid for NiN to keep releasing weak consoles because unless they keep being able to get gimmicks it'll eventually come back to bite them in the ass.

Brock Danger4700d ago

@ White-sharigan

"I don't even know how to respond to this, because of the sheer stupidity that's in this single sentence."

Thank you, awesomely put.

nopunctuation4700d ago

Nintendo is really pusing the casuals limited loyalty. I guess they are going to rely on the wii name (no other nintendo console has used the same name twice) and overcharge to sell.

orange-skittle4700d ago (Edited 4700d ago )

You would have to be a moron to pay $250 for a controller when the NPG is the same price. They would destroy themselves and no casual adult is going to pay that for additional hardware since the old stuff still works. This will not take off and Sony will show what portable gaming is all about. I was never a Sony fan, but they have something special on their hands and it's priced nicely. Nintendo is going to do okay, but fall short of expectation. Can you say PSP GO

SkittlesLikesPopcorn4700d ago

orange skittle huh?

Anyway i agree with that. That Controller is a bad idea for Wii U.

dantesparda4700d ago

Then Nintendo is seriously f-ing up! Thats all i got to say. Success has a way of always "stupifying" corporations. It seems that they never learn, but rather are always on some stupid bs track

SkittlesLikesPopcorn4700d ago

absolutely, but it DOES appear to be a normal cycle... What happened after PS2 's success? a 600$ console from SONY?

Wii did good and now its time for Nintendo to get owned. It never ends.

DigitalRaptor4701d ago (Edited 4701d ago )

Nintendo already made innumerable heaps of cash with Wii and DS, through simplicity.

I think now they're ready to innovate without limitations of the hardware.

LastDance4701d ago

possibly, but perhaps they should study the launch of the PS3 and move with caution

ZombieAssassin4700d ago

Thing is I bet the tech in the WiiU is more powerful than ps3/xbox but I doubt it's that costly so they'll be able to launch cheaper and prolly not lose as much money on each console sold if any at all as we all know they don't like to do that. I doubt we'll have another generation where a console gets as much flak as the Ps3 did, and to be honest the main reason it did is becaues high price point and they completely ruled last gen so the media likes to use anything they can.

MoveTheGlow4700d ago (Edited 4700d ago )

Simplicity and low prices, DigitalRaptor. Wii and DS were relatively cheap upon their release. Nintendo has been tight-lipped about every hardware spec, and the price that would be attached to that hardware. If something comes out that only slightly tops the PS3/360 in visual quality, but is as pricey or more so than those systems, it's just not going to be attractive to PS3/360 gamers.

It's also not going to be attractive to gamers that already have a Wii that their Wii games won't be upscaled: http://bit.ly/klUYoi , or that it'll only support one tablet (casuals will hate that, a one-cool-controller system is nothing to show off at a party): http://bit.ly/l3XZYE , or that Gamecube support ends with Wii U: http://bit.ly/l7GK75 . Also, remember that a strong Yen and a weak everything-else doesn't bode well for low prices outside of Japan, and the global economy is... er, a little different than the last time Nintendo released a home console.

Hopefully, this is just because they're not ready with all that stuff yet. Maybe at TGS they'll show off some amazing games, give us the specs, find a way to support more than one tablet controller, and we'll all jump for joy. At the moment, though, we're a bit uneasy, and I'm hoping that it's because we have a poor amount of information on the system, which is Nintendo's blunder.

dubal-e4701d ago

To me 250 is cheap, considering handhelds sell for that now, if I can get a console for that I'm happy.

orange-skittle4700d ago

It's not a console genius. It's a controller

dubal-e4700d ago

No its a console there genius, you better thank (No Child Left Behind). There's a new controller too but there's also a new console.

MoveTheGlow4700d ago

Skittle, Dubal-E is mistaken about something completely different. Wii U *is* a new console. The problem is that it will be *more than* (I wish we had bold or italics here!) $250, not that it'll be $250. If it were $250, that would be somewhat reasonable given what we know, but as I'm saying above, we don't know enough yet.

orange-skittle4700d ago

Unless you saw a different conference than I did, IT IS NOWHERE NEAR A NEW HOME CONSOLE. IT'S AN iTABLET CONTROLLER/PORTABLE GAME CONSOLE.

MoveTheGlow4700d ago

http://e3.nintendo.com/hw/#...

"Nintendo's next home console." Straight from the N's mouth. And these mention it also:

http://www.giantbomb.com/ne...

http://www.engadget.com/201...

Check out the Engadget picture: does that look like a Wii? It's no Wii Slim (or Fat, I guess).

Now, if you have the opinion that the tech is just Wii again, I understand that, but it's classified as a new home console. Not a portable console; a home console with one (and apparently only one) tablet controller, which you can stream the game to or get a different vantage point.

Or you could always follow the news. It'll save you some fury. And some caps.

VampiricDragon4701d ago (Edited 4701d ago )

the ps3 was 600 new.

The 360 was 400 new

Why expect different?

Especialyl if the system is more powerful technically?

@max
thats not true

Miyamoto said they are going to find a way to use miltiples of the tablet controller. Its basically 1.5 years away.

Nothing is final

HeavenlySnipes4701d ago

for Nintendo this time. They have to try and sell the controller (that thing is probably worth $100+) and the console (that is equal if not slightly better than the PS3/Xbox).

PsycheMax4701d ago

But you can use only ONE controller of that kind!
Only one Ipad controller for Wii U. So... who cares for the price of that under-powered iPad (and that's all to say XD), this thing must be inside the box of the console!

Biggest4700d ago

I would expect different because the PS3's price was not on gaming power alone. The WiiU doesn't have some of the components that made the PS3 cost what it did. There is NO WAY the WiiU should cost more than a 360 or PS3 going by its current information. The only possible big ticket piece would be the controller.

Anarki4700d ago

And the Wii was cheaper new and look where that got it.
why would people invest in this hardware that isn't that much better than the current gen xbox and playstation?

SilentNegotiator4700d ago (Edited 4700d ago )

Vampiric, you've done nothing but defend the WiiU. But now you're being plain ridiculous. Tell me.....what "games" are the reason to pick up a WiiU, from what we know so far? The Zelda non-gameplay demo was just conceptual. So what we have are a handful of EA/Ubisoft/etc titles that will mostly release THIS year, and next year on the WiiU when it launches. The other titles we know about is a lego GTA game and some cheap looking alien shooter.

And don't tell me the gamers who want to play those games have just been BEGGING for the successor to the WII. They're better off with the much larger set of games on the PS3/360, which will also get all of those EA/Ubisoft titles.

AWBrawler4700d ago

@silent

Can't we assume by now that Zelda will appear on every Nintendo system? so will Mario, Pokemon, Metroid,Smash Bros., and Animal Crossing.

Those are games, and we know more games are coming, and if I can have Ninja Gaiden and Zelda on the same Console if I wai t a bit longer, Why the hell not???

sporteous1212124700d ago (Edited 4700d ago )

@VampiricDragon

Why pay the price for Nintendo's new system when you can get better experiences with both the PS3 and XBOX360. These consoles still have at least a couple years left in their lifetime and they continue to get better. The WiiU is still at least another year out.

IMO the new controller for the WiiU will just be another gimmick from Nintendo and they will have to release a more standard dual analog controller before core gamers consider buying a WiiU.

StanSmith4700d ago

"IMO the new controller for the WiiU will just be another gimmick from Nintendo and they will have to release a more standard dual analog controller before core gamers consider buying a WiiU."

Erm... There already is a standard dual analog controller. The Classic controller.

sporteous1212124700d ago (Edited 4700d ago )

...I meant a good dual analog controller. I am sure it is alright for playing Mario & Metroid but I would rather use a Dualshock 3 or XBOX360 controller to play my games.

StanSmith4700d ago

It worked perfectly for goldeneye. It felt just as comfortable as a 360/PS3 pad. Btw when i mentioned the classic controller, i mean the revised version not the first release.

mamotte4700d ago (Edited 4700d ago )

Finally someone with enoguh common sense to say it. 360 and PS3 werent cheap in their time.

Sadly, common sense is banned in N4G, so you have more desagrees than agrees, so, I'll agree.

digitalivan4700d ago

So you could justify the price by comparing the power/price situation 5 years ago? Hell, why don't they say it's 1000 times more powerful than SNES was and make the price 1000 times more than SNES at it's launch.

mamotte4700d ago

@digitalivan

So, why are you so damn sure the tech isn't new? Show me the specs, not your imagination.

The Last Console Generation?

With the recent unveiling of the Wii U, and internet chatter talking about PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 being unveiled (if not released) next year, it looks like we will be ushering in a new generation of consoles in the very near future. But do we actually need another generation of hardware, and what do we hope for from the next generation?

qwertyz4665d ago (Edited 4665d ago )

I hope next gen consoles have at least 12gb ram(ram is much cheaper than it was in 2005/2006. they will need it in order to handle Samaritan tech demo graphics the demo was running on 3 gtx580 (which have 1.5gb vram each) an i7(12 cores I'm amusing they used 3 quad core i7s) and I think 8GB ram.

AhmadCentral4665d ago

12GB of ram is not going to happen. Btw you can't really compare pc specs with console specs, they;re quite different.

Fact..you send me messages in my inbox..and when I call you on your fake facts.like you can't even name the 20 exclusives you pretend came out..then you send some silly rant and block me like a little girl...LOL

Look..your not even worth a bubble or even close to following..because your simply a one console fankid who doesn't even play the games he talks about. You've never even played Gears but hypocritically say that the sequel is the same game as the one before. Don't worry about a console you'll never play. Simply enjoy the games on your console of choice.

On topic..

WiiU will be released next holiday..The new Xbox will be in stores by holiday 2013..and Sony will follow.

The success or lack of success of the next gen will be known 5 years from now. This will determine the landscape. What will also change how we play is if Apple or others jump into the fray. By the we may by on Ipad 4 or 5..who even knows what products will compete with consoles.

Only time will tell..it's going to be fun to see how it all unveils

True, and as long as consoles offer exclusive games that people want, that you can't play on computers, then consoles will stick around.

Maybe ,.. because gaming is getting to shit really fast,..
It used to be about games,.. now most publishers are more concerned how to leech money from us... Shit is always good for them,.. Nothing industry ever does is good for us,.. Hell you must agree to god knows what in eulas before you can even start a game,.. this shit is incredible,.. look at this guy
http://www.youtube.com/watc...
Will stop now, because everything I would say from now on I have written to many times today ,.. about monetizing advertizing and making gamers caught into their social systems instead of supplying them actual games and could be considered MS hate(because I really dislike them for 20years now),.

Shit is getting really bad really fast,.. And they have us in these fanboy clubs instead of some unity,.. and they are just fucking us left and right,..

and to predominantly PC gamers,.. (I am also a PC gamer) Don't think what these fuckers are doing to us does not concern you,..

nCiTy4665d ago

If anything I feel like consoles keep slowly becoming PCs.

Mr Tretton4665d ago

I don't think they're becoming PCs fast enough.

AWBrawler4664d ago

i prefer to keep those separated. I want my MMOs and RTS on my PC, and my Marios, Zeldas, and Smash Bros. on consoles

meganick4664d ago

I think it's more accurate to say they're becoming more PC-like, but I know what you mean.

jacen1004665d ago (Edited 4665d ago )

graphics wont make a difference in gameplay so unless other innovations are brought forward the gen wont move because graphics is not the key in generation leaps , pc's already exist if consoles keep upping the graphics and power eventually they will become pc's or on the other hand you would be better owning a pc because it is best of both worlds

SoapShoes4665d ago

What do you have to say for PC then? It keeps going forward and all that changes are the graphics... PC doesn't have innovative hardware to play games, it doesn't need it and frankly I don't think consoles need it either. It's all about gameplay and more power often does allow for new types of gameplay.

jacen1004665d ago (Edited 4665d ago )

ther is only one way u can play a game with a control so no power dosent make for different gameplay, on the other hand you would call what the wiiU is doing next gen.
also pc's were not developed originally to play games nor do they class there self as gaming consoles but consoles are gradually becoming pc's
also pc's dont get classed under GENS because hardware is evolving rapidly and pc's are constantly upgradable , consoles are not

N4g_null4665d ago

Pcs keep getting bought because there are apps out their where the name of the game is make millions in real money. So that's why you get the rush for pc tech. Right now there is not a reason to get the most high end video setups unless it helps you make games faster lol.

Yet console you are just waiting on content, waiting in the hype. On pcs you can just go and get a 3d app and an engine and go crazy if you want. On consoles your are waiting on the content.

The key for console has always been take the tech make fun games not wait on the tech, wait on the power, or ohhhhhh look at my powerful console. Yet thanks to none console friendly console makers real console game makers are being marginalized ever so more by web sites and gamers. You all know some thing is wrong but at least the graphics are good.

If power is your goal then you should just be a pc gamer. You guys are confusing developers.

6 Uses for the Wii U Controller's Camera

Have you wondered how useful the Wii U controller's front-facing camera could actually be? Here are six ways games could potentially utilize it.

bojanson4669d ago (Edited 4669d ago )

i like the concept of this. Anything that wii can bring to the table that makes it more family friendly the better. I'm sure the way they incorporate the camera into profiles, games, videos, etc will be a great way to get people interested.

I just hope they don't allow the camera for online multiplayer, we could have another chat roulette on our hands. lol
