"Yesterday, Edge reported that the PlayStation Network outage is negatively affecting PS3, with gamers trading in their consoles -- half for cash, the rest for Xbox 360. I suffered my first rrod before the PS3 even came out. Aside from having to pay $170 to get it fixed (one of two charges of $170 for two separate rrod that took me almost two years to get refunded back when the warranties were extended) Microsoft patched up my 360 fairly quickly. When I suffered my second rrod - I had a PS3 by that point but it was still pretty new and there weren't many games out for it, but I started playing PS2 games again. By my 3rd faulty Xbox - the PS3 had become my main gaming platform.

I'm now on my 4th 360 and the thing just collects dust. I brush it off about once a year now for games like Halo Reach and now I'm waiting for Gears 3 before I turn it on again. Really, after Gears I can't see anything on the horizon that would tempt me to go back. I was a huge fan of the original Xbox and loved my 360 and recommended them to friends. I wonder how many other fans like me Microsoft lost due to their own poor planning, inadequate testing and greed?

I'd go as far to say Edge get's their original stories and 'unnamed' sources directly from (probably) Microsoft's PR department - whether they know it's MS or not I don't know - but they sure do print the stories. Part of responsible journalism includes investigating your stories in search of the truth. They quote percentages to hide the real figures just like Sony or Microsoft's PR would.

They are making it out to seem that all PS3 owners are just waiting on Sony to screw up to buy a 360. GT5 & Life outside of gaming has kept me busy. Still game on the PC/Netflix as well...

Completely agree, EDGE is soooo trying to be controversial by giving amazing games really bad scores just for the attention, they're trying to use the Simon Cowel and Howard Stern method of getting people to pay attention to them - by being controversial. That crappy site Destructoid does the same thing, all flame bait articles.
I just think this whole thing with PSN is hilarious, I personally hate online gamers, they cheat, they scream racist and sexist nonsense, they're bigoted low IQ'd morons, and I'm glad they're now forced to get a life for a couple of weeks. Edge were marking all games like that for a long LONG time, before Simon Cowell appeared (I'm fairly sure anyway!). And that's a fairly large number of people you're grouping into the definition of online gamers!!

To be honest, this is another flame bait article from a site begging for hits. I understand that there are times when we should have lots of news about a particular subject on n4g... and the PSN downtime is clearly something that people are interested in so all the news on that is understandable! But it is getting nearly impossible to sift through all the rubbish to find ACTUAL GAMING NEWS!

Please stop posting and approving this flame stuff! By all means, post about PSN because a lot of the PS3 guys will be interested in when it comes back! But this is pointless!

The credit cards were encrypted, there is no proof that their firewall were outdated, there is nothing anyone can do with your personal info anyway, passwords will be changed as soon as the system comes back up, Sony has a protection plan in place for anyone who is concerned and no bank has reported any form of fraud or credit theft. When I went and picked up Kz3 the other day I asked the guy if they have been having a lot of ps3 returns and a slowing in ps3 game sales since the PSN outage and he said they haven't had anyone trade in a ps3 and game sales are actually up for SP games...he did say that they already had 3 copies of Brink returned on the first day.

I did not even bother to read the article since I knew it's a gross exaggeration and a desperate attempt to get hits on their site. PSN is down and yes that sucks balls, and to date no one knows for how much longer. Is the short term gain by being able to play on Live be worth it compared to the most possible remorse you'll surely feel later?
I'm not trolling but IMO there's a lot more to lose by trading in your PS3 for the sake of being able to play online.
Yes it sucks that I can't go online but when I look at what I can play on my PS3 in the next few months and later this year, I more inclined to say, "No thanks. I'll wait."

You're jumping to conclusions, we don't know what the authors intent was, but having original stories and bringing hit's to the site is usually in their best interest. The article is about rebutting the claim by 'unnamed sources' Edge used to quote its sources on a previous article that was picked up by most of the major gaming media. He makes a great point, follows it up with his own investigative journalism - it's sad we don't see this kind of action done more often. Personally i think the media sites picking up the EDGE story were the real one's being part of a desperate attempt for your hits.

I'm in a clan with over 300 PS3 users - not one has switched. Although some (like myself) that own the 360 and the PS3 have been putting more time in on the 360 during this down time....but once the PSN is backup we'll be back on the PS3.

That's pretty much what I've been doing. I've ran Gears damn near into the ground, and I've bought a few older games like Quantum of Solace and Jerico. Pretty much getting older games that I missed out on the first time around on the cheap.

Unless you are some obsessive Call of Duty player who needs your daily multiplayer fix, I don't see why anyone would trade in a PS3 and games, then pay around twice as much for a 360 and copies of those games, along with a $60 Live subscription. It's idiotic, unless you were already seriously considering a switch before this PSN thing ever started.

Hell, if you're that into multiplayer to the point where you can't just play a single player game for three weeks, you'd probably should be playing on Xbox anyway.

I can certainly understand why people would pick up a 360 if they had wanted one, but to trade in a PS3 for a 360 when you had no prior inclination to do so is just stupid, especially considering the crap trade-in value you get from GameStop.

even contemplating switching cause they love Assassins Creed, Need for Speed, LA Noire, Brink, Devil May Cry. But then they realised they're on both systems. Then those people thought..the 360 will have Gears of War to look forward to(and it deserves it all the accolades). There's great Kinect games like Monkey See Monkey Do...oh yeah that's discontinued. Then they thought what after that. There's other great multiplatform games comin..............but on both systems. Then they thought, if I did switch, what games won't I be able to play............Uncharted 3, The Last Guardian, Starhawk, Twisted Metal, Ico/Shadow of the Colossus, Infamous 2, Resistance 3.

Lately I've been playing on my PS3 just as much if not more than on my Xbox. Why? Reason #1 is probably that I'm not into multiplayer so the PSN outage hasn't deprived me of anything in that sense. Also, I haven't been attracted to any DLC lately, whether it's demos, indie games, older games, etc. Needless to say, I still love my PS3 and I have no intention of turning my back on it. And I have a feeling I'm not the only one... :)

I can guarantee you that some people that had a 360 before all this but refused to pay for Live before this happened finely tried out Live to see if it is any better. I bought Gold to see for myself.

The only game I have been playing online is COD: Black Ops. I can see absolutely no difference between the PS3 version and the 360 Version.

I never moved over to 360 I just moved to steam, and I'm not really sure I'll use my PS3 all that much any more. AS a Huge PlayStation fan boy ever since the first PS I have to admit this outage has caused me to lose patience and question my loyalty to Sony.

At a time when console games are starting to show their age a little on both systems(sub hd, iffy resolution etc) this outage made it so much easier for me to appreciate PC gaming a whole lot more.

PC games get free DLC regular updates and are usually a lot cheaper than console games, plus 1000's of free indie games.

Not to mention the fact that games improve (performance wise) as your system improves, PC is really the best platform for hardcore gamers.

I do imagine a lot of gamers will sell their PS3's for sure, the call of duty players who play only COD wont sit around and wait for PSN to come back online and 360 is there cheapest option.

I like the articles quest for data with the calling around to stores. His sample pool for the poll is likely skewed though and theres not enough choices.

Sample Pool: By calling the article what you did, what you have are strictly PS3 fans using the poll. Who else would 1) click the link, 2) decide to use the poll.

Poll choices: Absolutely and Not even if hell freezes over. Theres no "Thinking about it," or "Probly not," "Unsure", "Own both systems already." Again, considering who is going to actually use the poll in the first place, it's no surprise that the majority says "Not even if..". And, if there were more choices you might not have found it so lopsided.

Or better yet: "I don't play online so this has absolutely no effect on me" (but I can still effect the poll results)
