Ubisoft posts $74M net losses, cancels games

For next year, the company is expecting to "post further growth in both sales and current operating income." That apparently means trimming some fat from its game line-up, though, as the company has terminated some unspecified projects. We may not know which games received the dreaded axe for some time, but the long-dormant I Am Alive and Beyond Good & Evil 2 seem like prime suspects.

WTF didn't ubisoft just say I Am Alive and Beyond Good & Evil 2 are still in development.

Elimin84723d ago

It's what I read somewhere too. Unless it was a rumor or BS article....?!

BeOneWithTheGun4723d ago

all I know is they better not axe the new Rainbow 6!

The Matrix4723d ago

Ah...so this is why they're making another Assassin's this year.

limewax4723d ago

Im a sucker for that franchise though, I like Ezio anyway so I wont really complain about not getting AC3 yet. But milked or not, I have a lot of fun in their game worlds, thats pretty much all that counts. Actually playing AC:Brotherhood at the moment, the one year development is evident, but its still a good game

Redempteur4723d ago

assassin creed make profit , dance games makes profits ,the rabbits too...the rest of ubsifot games however .

don't worry ancel has confirmed BGE2 is still on tracks along with rayman origins ..no reason these two could fail at this point

reznik_zerosum4723d ago

Assassin's C. sucks terrible pc version

ikkeweer4723d ago

Well, TNT hadn't delivered the letters yet, so they had to say something

Soldierone4723d ago

Yeah...everytime Ubi runs into money trouble they always cancel these specific games...its like WTF?

SuperKing4723d ago

I guess I can understand why they're so eager to milk the AC franchise. Shame they're neglecting the rest of their portfolio but what can you do...

The Matrix4723d ago

How is it milking when Brotherhood was the most critically acclaimed of the series? If you get better with ever game, then "milking" is not a bad thing.

mrv3214723d ago

However point of stagnation are appearing that's a fear, this happend to Tony Hawk games, The COD series, Brotherhood was a great game, but 2 years off a new setting etc would have been better for the series than another game this year.

Another bad sign is adding multiplayer, which is very easy and quick to throw in some new maps, a mode and improvements and release a 'new' game.

Zydake4723d ago

Well played Mr. Smith

Crazyglues4723d ago (Edited 4723d ago )

Well Hawx 2 was just awful, No Big game company should ever put out such a lack luster effort... They didn't even try with that game...

The writing on the wall is as clear as day -this company needs to just focus on Making really good games and stop making half ass games.. (their spreading the company too thin with all of these lame projects)(stop all iPhone development..

If your going to make a game put all of your focus on making it amazing... & and then make the games the people want - Rainbow Six Vegas 3 would have been awesome..

This Company is about to turn into Atari... and that would just be too sad for words...

Soldierone4723d ago

Like I said before. Ubisoft used to be my favorite company, now its nothing but shovelware crap. They are turning into what EA was a few years ago.

They focus on casual games and rushed projects to create namebrands for easy money. In return we get crappy games with one or two good titles mixed in.

What happened to Rainbow Six? GRAW was more popular than COD for the longest time, till they messed that up too. Splinter Cell still hasn't seen a new title on PS3, good third party support there....No wonder they are not making money. They pulled an EA without having the power of EA.

Thepro3184723d ago

they release garbage like R.U.S.E over endwar 2 development . Endwar has grown a nice community but UBIsoft wanted put Endwar 2 on back burner for R.U.S.E .Very bad decision then not releasing another shooter since 2008 hurt them. Release your games your have

captain-obvious4723d ago (Edited 4723d ago )

i hope they loss more
lets face it
all what ubisoft has been doing this gen
is milking AC to death
pumping shovelware to wii and now kinect and move

and on top of that they fucked up one of my favorite games
prince of Persia

and no
i dont have a hope of them giving us good games any time soon again

Five Big Games Still Lingering Somewhere in Development Hell

This year promises to be a big year for gaming, and it will definitely be one of the greatest if any of these big MIA projects finally made it into gamers' hands.

Pretty sure Silk Song and Dragon Age are going smoothly. The other 2 can be assumed to be quietly cancelled knowing their publishers and Metroid will most likely be shown off this year.

Michiel198994d ago

Dragon Age going smoothly??? Directors leaving, people leaving in general, terrible working conditions....not sure how you define smoothly.

Chocoburger95d ago

I remember in 2017 when Nintendo showed off the Metroid Prime 4 logo, and some Nintendo defenders claimed "Just because they only showed a logo, doesn't mean that's all they've worked on for the game."

As history has proven, they were wrong. Nintendo showed off a logo back in 2017 because that's literally all they had.

-Foxtrot95d ago

I think Beyond Good and Evil 2 can stay there unless they are going to just rename it to a new IP

DOMination-94d ago

Pretty sure BG&E2 is dead at this point - along with the other game Ancel was working on before he left - I think it was called WILD. Anyone remember that from a PS conference years ago?

Dreadwolf isn't in development hell anymore and is finally getting its reveal in the summer - since 2016 the game has been scrapped and restarted three times but its been going pretty well since the last reboot when EA finally allowed BioWare to just get on with making a single player game.

I'm not sure Perfect Dark is in development hell either - like it could be but we haven't really heard much to suggest either way - imo they just showed the trailer off when the game was still in pre-production. Xbox were desperate for anything and this is all they had at the time. And the reason we haven't heard anything since is just because it's in normal development and games take 5 years to make. The help from a support studio was typically overblown on N4G because nearly every game has this.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 Is Now the Most Delayed AAA Game Ever

Ubisoft's action-adventure even beats Duke Nukem Forever which previously was the title with the longest wait between a game being first announced and it actually being released.

x_xavier_x563d ago

I understand that the original game is held in high esteem by some passionate fans. I tried to get into it on several occasions and I just lost interest after a few hours of gameplay.

Abracadabra563d ago

Beyond Good & Evil was a great game at the time... but, like most older games, it didn't age well. Gameplay and graphics are subpar by today's standards.

Wouldn't mind if they made a Remake with updated gameplay and graphics. Game turns 20 next year...

x_xavier_x563d ago (Edited 563d ago )

I feel the same way about the original Psychonauts. I gave it a shot every few years, and it just wasn't for me.

MadLad563d ago

I find it still very playable by today's standards, honestly.

But opinions are opinions.
I just feel it actually aged well.

Godmars290563d ago

Its was great middleware that someone thought would make for an even greater AAAA title.

For some reason...

0hMyGandhi563d ago

Beyond Good and Evil aged just fine, as did the original Psychonauts. Visually, sure, a bit rough (though both have a wonderfully refreshing art style that more than makes up for actual "visual fidelity".)

I'd say that you really need to give both of these games another shot. Psychonauts is one of the most original and utterly creative games I've ever played, and it's also one of the funniest as well. Psychonauts 2 was even better, and basically, a (well made) Pixar movie brought to life.

In all honesty, don't just play games and try to like them if you don't actually like them. It's perfectly fine to have your own tastes! we tend to use a tremendous amount of hyperbole when referring to games that are slightly older, and we speak only from memory, which *can* be deceiving.

I will say that I replayed the first Psychonauts again in the last few months, and still adore it. But like I said, this is all subjective.

562d ago
poppatron562d ago

I gave up on the og psychonauts after about 5 or so hours because like many many people those weird sluggish controls just got the better of me while trying to get through some of the more testing platforming and swinging around parts.

BgaE I got way further in enjoyed, I think I saved it off in the end because something I was more interested in came out. The sequel looks like a completely different type of game in genre and scope, to the point it looked pretty ground breaking I thought. I’m still super low key excited for it, although I wouldn’t be surprised if next time it reared it’s head it looked very very different.

EazyC563d ago

It's an age thing. I'm always reminded of this when I whip out the old PS2, the vast majority of 3D games from the '00s just haven't aged well.

Good-Smurf562d ago

I have same feeling over Code Veronica X fans loved it to bits while I'm came out of it confused and disappointed.
I never played Beyond Good & Evil and I might get give it a try soon.

Cancel it or change the name for all I care. This isn't the Beyond Good & Evil I fell in love with.

Si-Fly563d ago

Weird take. Whilst we didn’t get proper gameplay reveals it looked very much how I would want BG&E to look now.

-Foxtrot563d ago (Edited 563d ago )

So you wanted an ambitious open world Beyond Good and Evil sequel that gameplay differs from the original and has no clear vision so far if it's a prequel (which no one wanted) or a sequel (with an evil Jade where she's not the main character, which no one wanted)

All people wanted was a full on sequel that's a platformer and continues Jades story.

-Foxtrot563d ago

Exactly

It's not Beyond Good and Evil

They had an idea for an ambitious new IP and thought it would sell better or had more of a safety net if they slapped on a franchise name.

isarai563d ago

Seriously, has absolutely nothing to do with the original other that a loose cameo.

CrimsonWing69563d ago (Edited 563d ago )

How hard is it to make a game like the original? Nobody wanted anything different and these idiots just insist on trying to make something completely unrelated AND they don’t even know what to make! So, yea, here we go with the delays. Ubisoft can be such an obnoxious publisher/developer.

InklingGirl563d ago

Just leave it alone, the original is a classic lets not ruin it.

Exvalos563d ago

I'm more worried about how fast that time went i still remember it being announced there is no way that was that many years ago NO WAY!

Beyond Good And Evil 2 Starts External Playtesting

Although Beyond Good and Evil 2 has had its problems, it has officially been confirmed by Ubisoft that it is still in active development.

Terry_B648d ago

It never looked like a Beyond Good and Evil game even.

TheExecutioner647d ago

Do you know that first game came out 2003 by the time this game released i would be probably 40.
Now majority of gamers who played the first one are not going even bother playing now.

This game is a refreshing and wants to be more appealing to all gamers.

Concertoine647d ago

I just don’t see a reason why it cant be a new IP in that case.

Terry_B647d ago

..and? do you think it looks like a game that appears to all gamers? Unlike the first part it gets mostly negative feedback, even from people that never played the first game.

Michiel1989647d ago

@Terry they also didnt play the 2nd.....

maelstromb647d ago

If the devs were smart, they'd launch a remake of the original a few months before the sequel to get the fans who have loved the original amped again and to also introduce it to a new generation to get them excited for what's to come. Seems like a win-win to me.

isarai647d ago

Looks like an awesome game, but it has nothing too do with BGE1, or anything to do with what fans wanted.

Yi-Long647d ago

If it would have been a SP action-adventure game like the first one, I would have been excited.
