Im not going to sit here and argue with fanboys. PS3 exclusives are great, but dont start with the "multiplatform games are water downed" bullshit. I only own a ps3 and although MGS4 is the best game i have ever played. Some of my other all time favourites include Red Dead Redemption, Fallout 3 and Call of Duty 4. All of those games are NOT water downed products. Exclusives might have graphical edge but thats not what i look for in a game, its gameplay and GOOD gameplay is NOT exclusive to any console.

That's news to me. I've never heard anyone I know say that. In fact, it's my first time seeing such a statement on the web. With the Gears 3 beta going on UC3 being on the 360 is the furthest thing from most people's mind who only have a 360. This is definitely someone elses fantasy and quite frankly sounds made up.

Exclusives can utilize ALL of it's resources on a single-platform. From a business perspective, it can really sell with potential given the right advertisement. Extra resources can be poured on graphics/bugs/QA without having to check on multiple platforms. Otherwise exclusives can simply be because the "other" platform refuses to publish it (like Haze).

Exclusives are a great way for a game developer to concentrate on one system. Making multiplatform games isn't easy, and requires a much bigger team or a team with a lot of passion, because depending on how the game was made, they can't always "port" it over to the other systems. Not to mention that exclusives usually have a higher rate of quality... Like Uncharted 2, and Killzone 3.

Then they should have made a better choice in the beginning and picked the console with the multiplats AND the best exclusives. They should have also examined the cost of the console over 4 years rather than utilizing the "what is cheap right now" method of purchasing.

When a console doesn't use last generation technology then that console might work as the sole console. Otherwise we are limiting developers. One console would mean competition among developers instead of among hardware manufacturers.

It is a fallacy that one console would prevent innovation. Sony was easily ahead last generation, not even looking back at the other two yet they continued to push the PS2 in software and hardware. Making exclusive games allows developers to take advantage of that particular piece of hardware. When they make a game multi-platform, it means they have to cater to the lowest common denominator when it comes to system specs. If one system can't do it, neither version will get to use that feature. Only in isolated cases will the developer take the time to code a feature for one system and not the other as well. That adds to the production budget for a feature that will only increase sales on a portion of the overall market the game is appealing to.

Uncharted wouldn't be Uncharted if it were not exclusive. It wouldn't be the game we know today. It would be a game built around the weaknesses of each system it is playable on.

Multiplatform games do not feel watered down. Many of the finest games of all time are multiplatform games.

Exclusives are not necessary in order for there to be competition, there is natural competition between every game ever made. They all compete for your dollars and your attention.

Consider the world of movies. We don't have to buy 5 different DVD players just to watch all the movies we love. Yet the diversity of different types of movies is even greater than that of videogames.

Someday there may be one standard in videogames and perhaps the only difference that might exist between different "platforms" will be the different services and peripheral features unique to those platforms.

Sadly, many fanboys want the practice of exclusives to continue so that they can continue bitching at each other. That, more than anything, is their motivation. They like this fanboy war crap.

Exclusives are good for the platform holders, but they aren't good for consumers. Getting slightly better optimization in some exclusives isn't a worthy trade off for the gamer. Getting to play any game that is made simply by owning one videogame device would be a much bigger benefit.

Next generation its going to get even worse. There will be more videogame platforms than ever before and the only way to play all the exclusives will be to spend ungodly amounts of money buying all the platforms. It's a bad state of affairs.

It's mot that Halo is poor(it's great series) but it's certainly less of an everyman's game in the way Gears is because it's so synonymous witrh it's platform by this stage whereas Gears has only one gen of Xbox heritage. what ths has meant, in my experience, is the gamers who WANT and LOVE Halo have nearly, to a man, BOUGHT a 360 ALREADY purely for Halo3,ODST or Reach. Point being I doubt there's that many Halo fans left who don't own a 360 making those left on other consoles pretty unlikely to be massive Halo fans and , anyway, it's always been a love it or hate it type of game among me and my mates.

I like Halo, and the 360 just fine(just prefer my PS3 overall)but I DO think Halo's fanbase is firmly, already in the camp of owning a 360 making PS3 only gamers way more likely to envy Gears than Bungies creation at this point in time.

On fact my only personal issue with Halo is that I'd like the SP to feel as important as the MP does these days. Not a biggie and I can't moan about them going where I think more fans wanted them to and making the MP the most feature heavy thing out there. Gears, though, like Uncharted on the other console seems to be THAT game that people just like regardless of platform and therefore they will want it more in threads like this.

Exclusives are about defining the ethos of platform. Stuff like Super Mario defines Nintendo's goal for quality, polished, accessible content. Similarly, Sony's emphasis on games like Wipeout in the early days of PlayStation separated the PSone from the "cute, kiddy, toy" image that Nintendo and SEGA carved out for the industry in the 16-bit days.

Without exclusives, what would be the point in different consoles? You'd essentially own a set-top box. You wouldn't own a PlayStation or an XBOX, you'd own a "Sony Games Console" or a "Microsoft Games Console".

Exclusives carve out a personality for their respective consoles, and while it might sound ideal to have every game available on one system, in reality it's a very bad idea and I hope it never happens.

Nothing is ever exclusive to me. However that being said I also feel like exclusives as being a reason to own one console over another is kind of a thing of the past. The irony of it all is THAT is how the gaming industry grew up to be in the first place.

As for it hurts competition, BS it does. You can have great games like Plants vs. Zombies on any platform out there and you know what, it's still a fun game. We can also have PC games lead in technology while still competing within. People enjoy games off of service like Steam and can play them on different PC's. The games become the focus. Movies can be on DVD and compete with one another and now we have blu-ray if you want a better version. We don't need to buy a Samsung player or a Sony player and the technology has evolved over the years. People don't want to have to buy different platforms to watch movies which is why HD-DVD died. Can you imagine people having more than one smartphone because one can make local calls while the other can make long-distance calls? Why we still put up with this today is mind-boggling.

Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are all about control to sell us hardware. So what they do is go out and buy a few game studios to coerce us into buying their machines. Wouldn't people like the flexibility of playing games like Mario on PC hardware and on online service like Xbox Live? That's how you compete, by offering choices, not by making them exclusive. So instead what do we do, we wait 5 years for Nintendo to come out with new hardware so we can play games in HD while HD has been available for over 5 years.

Sometimes Sony or MS will help a publisher pay the development costs of a title, in return for exclusivity (eg: MGS4 or the GTA4 expansions).

Sometimes it doesn't make sense to spend the extra 5-10% on a port to the other hardware.. e.g. The Japanese market has very few X360s relative to PS3s, and many Japanese games never make it to the west until proven popular... thus they come over as PS3 exclusives.

Sometimes the owner of a service, like PSN or XBL, will offer substantial benefits to exclusives, like reimbursement of dev costs, out of the revenue normally due to the network publisher, or additional royalties, due to an exclusivity agreement.

And sometimes, developers just want to maximize their game on a single platform, without the worry of porting it to something else. Exclusives are almost always the best games, because they can squeeze every bit out of the hardware they're on, whereas a multiplat cannot. I think Nintendo and Sony might have a problem with that. That's kinda... the point of making exclusives -- to make your console stand out. It's not a "dated concept" -- its business, pure and simple. Frankly, its something MS should be doing more of, not the other way around.

The article author is horribly uninformed, with regards to how the console business works, and has always worked. Exclusives are (largely) made by hardware manufacturers for the purpose of driving hardware sales. Hardware sales drive 3rd party software sales. 3rd party software sales yield licensing revenue (we're talking $5-$8 per game unit sold here) for the 1st party manufacturers (the same people who made the exclusive games).

Licensing fees are the reason its so important for a hardware manufacturer to grab as large a piece of the market as possible. They don't make a dime from hardware sales (well... Nintendo does) -- that's why consoles are so cheap, relative to PCs.

Exclusives have always, and will always, define the console they are on. If you're upset that another console has some exclusives that you want... go buy said console and play them. The console is dirt cheap in comparison to the games library you eventually buy for it.

PS3Fanboys want Xbox gamers to want Uncharted on the 360. But the odds are that is not the case, hell majority of PS3 gamers don't want Uncharted 2 on their system. Otherwise they would have sold a copy to more people then about 4 million worldwide. That is like what... 10% or something. and personally, if i could have only 1 console and ONLY have its exclusives on that console, i would take the 360. the PS3s exclusives just havent done it for me this generation. most of them are just single player 'play once then youre done with them' type games that didnt really improve or innovate over their PS2 prequels, and the new ones just lacked anything innovative or outstanding to me. now i know the PS3 fanboys will jump up and down shouting 'heavy rain! uncharted!', but heavy rain was done last gen (fahrenheit) and uncharted is just crash bandicoot with different characters and guns (impression of wide open levels, but funnelled through tiny linear corridors). i enjoyed beating uncharted 1/2, but its all so controlled and hand-held that it didnt do anything for me.

When this guy says "gamers" he means xbox owners, right? Can you imagine what KZ or Uncharted or even MGS4 would look like on the xbox the GOW himself will look like his MK version, the fact is exclusives bring the best out of the consoles in game play and visuals, point in-fact, we all know the xbox isnt as powerful as the PS3 but gears 3 looks very good(though I dont know how it plays...yet), crysis2 was supposed to be THE ground breaking shooter in terms of gameplay but mostly for its visuals for consoles but every one agrees (except IGN) that it is not. Judging from what I have read here the writer of this article did not do his research, sorry bud, exclusives must stay.

I think expensive gaming habits are a good thing. Let it push you to be successful in life so you can afford to have expensive hobbies. It did for me.

I think these fanboys need to get a life. SONY owns Naughty Dog and whatever they make, meaning Uncharted belongs to them. Same as MS owns Halo. So we will never see those games on another console......PERIOD! Exclusives help people decide what console they want, or for people like me, what games I'm going to buy when they hit the shelves.

I like Gears and Halo on 360. I like Uncharted and God of War on PS3. I also like Zelda and Metroid on WII. They are made for those consoles controls and that consoles strength.

I'm a PS3 gamer and the games I play are mainly Multiplatform, but I dont want any more garbage form the XBOX, if i really want Halo and Gears - which looks like a cartoon and steals a look of Bulletstorm, then i buy a XBOX, This Article is wrote in the direction of a XBOX gamer and since the games Xbox puts out can be played on the Computer, i rather get a better one, but personally having friends that own HALO Reach i cna say its not my style of game, the gaphics need some help and yeah PS3 Wins

yeah i think i can understand both sides to this but, ok everyone wants to play gears halo etc on ps3, eveyone want to play uncharted socom etc on xbox,

ok if SONY owns the rights to the games/studio then more than likely you wont see the game on xbox 360, same thing for MICROSOFT, so heres my 2 cents,

every gaming company out there is always looking for that BEST game to get lots of moneys made so

BOTH CONSOLES = MORE MONEY
SINGLE CONOLE = MONEY, but you have gamers saying if that was on my console i would buy it.
so the best game to date is CALL OF DUTY BLACK OPS ok so
CALL OF DUTY BLACK OPS = BOTH CONSOLES = ALOT OF MONEY = BEST GAME OF THE YEAR OR YEARS

i understand the whole exclusive thing. but there always that PSN/XBOX 360 FANBOY but deep down there saying damn i really what to try that game but i wouldnt be caught dead buying an XBOX 360/PS3.

so i think it SONY/MICROSOFT/GAMING COMPANYS made games for both consoles games alone would probably keep the MONEY ROLLIN.
