PSN Users Reporting Hundreds of Dollars Stolen From Them

After the shock announcement regarding Sony saying that every single PlayStation Network account may have been compromised, reports are starting to come in pointing towards the fact that PSN users are having hundreds of dollars stolen from their account this past weekend.

NO ONE has officially confirmed leaked info, including CC info. Sony has stated that it is a serious concern/possibility, though.

So let's be logical here. Thousands, maybe millions (Don't know the stats), lose their info. Out of 70 million accounts, the chance of coincidence that one will lose some data in some manner, just as likely from an unrelated source, is pretty high. Add in the chance of concern trolls, and the chance of these reports both being correct AND legit become slim.

We still don't know if any credit card info was taken off PSN. Given the huge number of accounts on PSN there would likely be a bunch of people finding fraud on their cards even before the security breach. It happens all the time so the odds would be small that no one from with a PSN account is hit for a whole week. I'm not saying they didn't get the info from PSN but it's far too early to tell.

I've had a number of mysterious charges on credit card accounts over the years and it's never cost me a dime. I just call the credit card company and the charges magically go away.

Even if they do charge you I think visa limits your liability to $50. Don't remember whether Mstercard does the same thing.

A few people have said this could be something else even I have, and many don't care but you don't need the credit card data as you can start to social media data mine the names and addresses to gain enough data to get your own credit cards made up under those people's IDs.

So even if you've never had a credit card you could suddenly apply for one and never know it.

Of cause you;d have to pay all the bills racked up on that card as there'd be no fraud done as everything will be checked out and be ok'd so you'd be up for the bill if there's one.

That $50 liability means fuck all, as you have to prove you didn't spend the money and many banks will have you pay the bill first then settle the matter later.

If you get a Japanese psn, you will see the amount of free stuff they get through their psn store. Also, some people have multiple psn names for family. Another reason would to have a professional account and another "just for fun" account. Take Starcraft II for example, higher league players have multiple accounts because on one they use professional to ladder and tournament with, while with the other they use to practice new strategies without having to worry about their stats suffering if the strat fails.

OK...TENS of MILLIONS of people use PSN. 77,000,000 between PSN and Qriosity.

Even if this hack had not occurred, statistically many of them would have been victims of credit card fraud, completely independent of PSN. 10% of all Americans have been victims of credit card fraud, and over 11 MILLION are victims of identity theft every year. So a handful of people out of the tens of millions of PSN subscribers isn't really significant.

All that's happening is that now these people are ASSUMING it's because of PSN. It's the classic error of assuming correlation equals causation.

Now, if over the next few days, we start hearing about this happening to, say, tens of thousands of PSN users, THEN there will be some semblance of statistical significance and these hackers will become suspects. I'm not ready to put them against the wall for this one just yet.

sony uses verisign if imnot mistaken for thier credit card transactions...really it doesnt matter what company they use as far as that goes all companies that do CC transactions require CC data use at least 128bit encryption which means any hacker that steals data or attempts to view it has a snowballs chance in hell of actually view said CC#......

How can they have money taken from their debit card when you can't link a debit card on PSN? Only thing you can link is a credit card. When someone get your credit card number and use it, it's not withdrawal, it's just credit, you don't even need to pay if it's fraud, so nothing will happen to your bank account unless you don't report the fraud and you actually pay for it.

Those people who got money taken from their debit card likely got their card along with PIN number cloned somewhere.

Well I immediatley took action today when Sony released the update saying that it was possible our CC info was stole and I called the bank and looked online so far no fraudulent withdrawals have taken place but to be sure I cancelled the Credit Card I was currently using and had the bank issue me a new one. chances are whoever hacked the network simply copied ALL of the details to a few spreadsheets. why the hell WOULDNT they do that? they didnt hack it for a bit of fun, they wanted something.

and also, despite there being 70 000 000 PSN accounts, id estimate only about 20 to 25 million of those are actually real accounts - the rest are duplicates, forum logins, etc. i personally have made over 20 PSN accounts (the teenage PS3 fanboy mods over on the forums used to love banning me, so i just kept creating new PSN accounts lol. funny that they didnt seem to understand why i could keep coming on there after they IP banned me a number of times lol). so the majority of them would be filled with rubbish, useless data. hell, my firstname in most of my accounts was "asdf", and my last name was "asdf" as well. no hope in hell of them getting any meaningful info from that account, or the 19 or so others i created.

but anyway - Personal info was accessed, sony f$#%ed up big time. theres no denying it. my credit card should be pretty far down the hackers list of ones to use if they chose to use any, since in the 5 years or however long ive had my main PSN account ive only spent something like $8.95 on it.

Prior to PSN points cards, which have not been around very long, you had no choice but to use a credit card if you wanted to buy anything from the PSN shop. So I think that anyone who has had a PS3 for a few years and actually buys DLC or games will have been forced to enter their CC in order to do so or simply not use the PSN store.

When you shop anywhere by CC you are trusting a company to value your business enough to keep your information safe. Customers decide where to shop based on consumer trust, it isn't like we were handing out our CC numbers to shady porn sites, we were trusting a established corporation. The customers are not at fault here. We should have been able to trust Sony to keep our personal information safe.

Of course this could happen anytime you give personal information out, even LIVE can be hacked, and other companies have also had this problem, but I think the one place that Sony went wrong is in taking so long to alert their customers. That is was not cool, because it opened us up for identity thief and that is never fun.

So best case, we cancel our CC, change passwords, and put fraud alerts out with the credit reporting agencies. Easy enough, but still enough of a pain in the ass to annoy a few people. This is not a fanboy issue, PS3 owners have a right to be annoyed about this.

2. Change the password on you email account linked to your PSN account
3. Consider prepaid PSN or credit/gift cards for future PSN purchases.

There is nothing wrong with trying to be a little safe. Protect yourselves when things like this happen. Most decent banks, etc. have fraud protection. Just make sure you monitor your accounts for strange or malicious activity. If you have any questions about charges, your bank should be able to clarify them.

Of course this is for those who had major credit cards linked to their account. We all know that it is not required to link a credit card to a PSN account since it is free.

Guys, I will say that this can happen to any network, including XBL. I hope it never happens, but all it takes is for someone in the company to make the challenge to hackers publicly.

I just got off the phone with my bank. $1000 has been charged in the past 2 days without my permission (all online transactions, some currency conversions).

Thankfully, I have insurance and they're reversing the charges and issuing a new card.

Is it the PSN hacker? The timing is quite convenient and leads me to believe so, yet it could be potentially any one retailer that I've used my card at as well. Someone could have obtained my data from those retailers and sitting on the info waiting for something big like this to hide behind. They could be using this PSN hacking as a cover to make me think that it's the PSN intrusion. Until someone who has a credit card that they only ever used on the PSN gets defrauded, it's kind of hard to confirm at this point. And until proven otherwise, I still believe it's the Sony leak that caused this.

Well here's some news for you. A few years back there were 2 major Anti Virus Manufacturers that were hacked into ( Symantec and Trend Micro ). These are companys that focus only on security versus someone like Sony who is a gaming company. So you can bet that if someone can get into security companies then your CC or Debit info can be at risk on Sonys servers, no problem.

Also, don't do anything and just sit back to wait if your info is breached. It's not always " Relax and let the CC Company/Bank take care of it. " I have had fraudulent charges on my CC before and actually had to cover them. It's not 100% guaranteed that you will be covered, Banks and CC companys are in the business of making money, just like an insurance company they will try make you pay as much as they can to boost their profit margin and make the shareholders happy.

No the PSN is free because ( PSN Home ) is garbage. Anyone who has both systems and uses the online feature of each understands. I regularly use Live and Home, home feels so outdated compared to live. Not to mention their serious lack in Demos and trial games compared to 360.

And before you start flinging the fanboy comments, I have a PS3 and 360. The 360 online features are intuitive and give you vast choices. The PSN Home menus are sloppy, the demos and trials are severely limited. I would gladly pay for a better PSN if it were available. PS Plus just doesn't cut it.

Really and how hard is it to come up with $60 for the yearly sub. to live? If $5 a month is to much then ask your mom for a raise in your allowance. Or just mow some of your neighbors yards and earn the money. Because I would rather spend $5 a month for a solid online platform then have something that was free and resembled PS Home.

I just checked my account today and found a $17.48 charge from a company located in Germany along with a $0.14 foreign transaction fee and I haven't bought anything from Germany or even used my credit card for anything in weeks. I suspect my credit card information has been compromised. I am willing to bet that internet gaming sites like this are only visited by a small fraction of the people who own PS3s and put their credit card info on the PSN. Just because you only hear about a few on here does not rule out that there could be many, many more we don't know about. Most of the people who visit gaming sites knew their information could have been compromised and changed their card info. I have now changed mine, I'm just glad they didn't get much of my money and my bank will reimburse me.
