Battlefield 3 console differences detailed by DICE

So far DICE has shown tremendous-looking Battlefield 3 running exclusively on PC. How will it look when it makes the leap to console? "What we're showing on PC might look better than on console," said DICE executive producer Patrick Bach.

And i really hope that show it on the ps3 first, cause usually everything is demoed on the 360. That usually implies that the ps3 version is not the one they trying to sell, since it might give off the wrong impression (concerning their ability to develop, graphics etc)

What he is saying is that most people will be impressed because it will look better than other console games, but some people will inevitably be disappointed because it doesn't look as good as the PC version.

Well, of course it won't look as good as the PC version. I think most gamers are tech-savvy enough to understand that.

I couldn't imagine playing BF3 on anything but the PC personally, but I sincerely hope console players get a good experience as well.

What EA and Dice have done is no different than a company showing CGI game play and try to mislead their way through the year, especially with E3 coming up and then drop an inferior product at the end, ask for full price and laugh at the console gamers.

It's just idiotic to call devs out saying your game is the best with the best engine and everyone else is treading water and then have the audacity to claim it will look no worse than any other game out there?

I'm sure it will look fine but Dice just seems full of contradictions. Maybe seeing Crysis 2 and the rumor that Crytek is going to show a game in Kingdoms they have said will impress at E3 have put a limp in that bravado of theirs. iD has started the Rage Hype machine up. Gears 3 will be a force at E3. Forza 4 scared Ea into releasing Shift2 now instead of trying to go head to head with that monster in the fall, something they did in the past. COD has been suspiciously quiet, TOO quiet.

Big surprises coming at E3.

I've heard it runs better on PS3 'cause they're using the CELL's SPEs for teh deferred rendering.. or something like that.

Heres a nice analogy for the player count situation: PC BF3= Giant juicy burger full of meat. PS3/XBOX BF3 (with same size maps but 24 players)= "Wheres the meat in this thing!?" PS3/XBOX BF3 (Smaller maps, less players)= "What the hell is this, theres nothing to it!"

They are making a console version because they KNOW console gamers will eat it up and ask for more no matter how dumbed down the console versions will be. I don't get why they can't do anti-aliasing etc on consoles when I've seen great aliasing, motion blur etc on 360 and PS3 exclusive games. Sounds like excuses. I just hope its a good product because I don't have the luxury of having a gaming PC because I'm a Mac user. And having all 3 systems plus handhelds, I don't have the time or money for a gaming PC, especially for just one game. DICE, don't let me down. It's interesting to hear that they say the console version will probably be the best looking console game, I'm sure that will spawn a lot of lens of truth articles and fanboy wars :P

Personally, I am not entirely bothered about their graphical acheivements. Gameplay has always been BF's strong point, except the horrible gunplay* which should be their #1 priority - though it was much better in BFBC2:Vietnam.

*gunplay in this context = the feel of the shooting, ie. recoil, aiming down sight, weapon sway. The reason games like CoD, CS and Halo were so successful - and a big thing that a lot of bad FPSs do wrong which causes them to fail.

Also I want to see less duplicated models. Every building in BF games is just a duplicate of a different one with 1 small window change and a bit of a rotation - but that's probably due to the 360's DVD limitation in BC2, as usual.

And some of the textures in the BF3 screenshots are actually really low res - then there are others that are amazingly high-res.

If they play BF3 regularly in the office then I guess we can presume it won't be launched full of bugs?...
