Why Atmospheric Horror Games Fail at the Register

VGW's Jen Bosier: "Part of what diminishes games like the F.E.A.R. series and Dead Space is that while I may worry about conserving ammunition, I’m still packing a gun. Or a shotgun, or a damn rocket launcher. The challenge is “how am I going to kill this thing with my extensive arsenal of kickassery,” rather than “how do I survive this?”

Really interesting article, and I think you definitely have hit a major point.

SeraphimBlade4765d ago

I think she hit the nail on the head with the "boring middle third" thing. That happens to me a LOT in horror games.

Makes sense

DrewBeyond4765d ago

I'd like to see a game like Silent Hill take the Heavy Rain approach. Make it about the experience, not conserving ammo and taking a 2x4 upside a faceless army of nurses. I think Alan Wake faltered for the same reason. By halfway through, I was so sick of killing a small nation worth of shadowy figures to get to the next story part. Much creepier to avoid than to confront. Amensia proved this even though I think that game's creepiness came from sound design.

A horror game (or an horror movie too) depends on its sounds for the effect...
Lets take The Shining as an example..
Jack Nicholson's acting is scary...and it was enhanced by its sounds...

What an article...kudos to the writer

Eternal Darkness was way ahead of its time especially for a Nintendo exclusive.

I would love to see a remake or sequel (multiplatform)

Ristul99d ago

When I see Eternal Darkness, I klick!

TheBrainZ99d ago

Not to sound too repetitive but Eternal Darkness all the way!

GaboonViper99d ago

Eternal Darkness is one of my most favourite games of all time.

4 people love Eternal Darkness.

Quick! Jump on that remake, whoever holds the rights these days.

I bought this for the PlayStation and it wasn't cheap on ebay along side of The city of the lost children.

maniacmayhem286d ago (Edited 286d ago )

I remember playing this and the jump scares were insane.

Unknown_Gamer5794286d ago

I remember playing this one on my PC some years ago, with an unofficial translation. Of course, I sailed the seven seas for that, and this will be an opportunity to own the game legally/revisit it on my console of choice, so I’m looking forward to this.

The Capcom Series Most in Need of Revival

Capcom recently revealed interest in reviving their dormant IPs, so it's time to look at which Capcom series would make sense to return.

Knightofelemia695d ago

Breath of Fire, Knights of the Round, Saturday Night Slam Masters, a proper Bionic Commando game, Ghosts and Goblins. I am all down for Dino Crisis loved 1 and 2 one thing I like about Capcom is their massive library of games that need to be brought back to life. Next to Konami, Namco, Sega, old Squaresoft, Capcom was and is another one of my favorite developers. I would like it if Disney would just let Capcom make a Marvel game or two or Disney should let Capcom handle some Disney games. Capcom pulled of some great games with both Disney characters and Marvel characters.

All those plus Rival Schools, Powerstone, Darkstalkers, Dungeons and Dragons and Aliens vs Predator.

Terry_B694d ago

Rival Schools, Darkstalkers, Captain Commando, Dino Crisis and Breath of Fire.

CrimsonWing69694d ago

I feel like Darkstalkers will get SJWd, but I still want it

RyanShutup694d ago

The Japanese seem to be immune to that bullshit... so far at least anyway.

shinoff2183694d ago

Breath of fire would be number one choice.

Glad to see it getting some love in the comments. I loved these games 1 through 4.
Not dragon quarter

Godmars290694d ago

Dark Stalkers, any fighting game - or side scroller - really, just not with SF's current art direction.
