Is Crysis 2 the best looking PlayStation 3 game to date?

Uncharted 2's final level maybe doesn't push the tech the same way CryEngine is doing but the end visual outcome is essentially perfection.

All of these games prove that it takes years upon years to find the "limit" of a console.

Crysis is good looking, but it doesn't compare to Uncharted, GOW3, Heavy Rain, etc. Those game utilize the PS3 to get the most from it. The flash and flair of the game is sexy but it isn't that sexy. Uncharted 2 has some of the most realistic environments I have ever seen and I am 100% confident that Uncharted 3 will be 10x that. I can't believe this is still going on. And as it stands, I think Killzone 3 still has an edge over Crysis 2. The lighting is way better in C2, but the presentation and the action in KZ3 is incredible. I am even thinking that Resistance will eat Crysis 2 alive. It is actually running past 30frames on PS3.

Yeah, Uncharted 2 is still the most visually impressive game to date on PS3. And God of War 3 wins my award for most technically impressive. Crytek, on the other hand, might have pulled off the most visually impressive across all three platforms.

Framerate is more consistent too in Killzone 3 (from what I've seen, C2 goes at low as 18fps on both console versions!).

Can't stand games with variable frame rates. Lock it down to 30fps if you can't get 60fps.

Crysis 2 is not the best looking game on the PS3 but it is the best looking game on the 360.

Sony has several exclusives that eclipse Crysis 2 but don't let that stop you tabloid journalist from getting hits.

Crysis 2 is impressive but games like GOW3, Killzone and Uncharted 2 completely blew me away when I saw them for the first time, Crysis 2 didn't. Let's not forget Uncharted 3 looks even better than 2 and it will be out before you know it.

It does look good on PS3 but in all honestly it only runs 1024 x 768, and its performance is less than perfect. The likes of KZ3 and Uncharted 2 run 1280 x 720 and Uncharted 2 in particular, performance is absolutely rock solid. The game just doesn't drop frames...

You could argue that Crysis 2 looks better than these games, but even if that is true, you have to admit that it has come at the cost of resolution AND framerate consistancy.

Is why i admire Uncharted 2 so much. It looks the way it does, but it also does not compromise its performance one iota for the sake of the visuals.

well after playing killzone 3 i can say yes it looks good, but better then crysis 2? im not convinced.

i was a bit let down by killzone 3, on one hand some areas look great, like the trash level where you destroy the big robot, other areas can look pretty rough, i thought the jungle level was down rite ugly, the MLAA really takes the sheen away from the game and leaves some areas looking unfinished.

i enjoyed KZ3 but it felt inconsistent as far as graphics go, it was full of ups and downs.

That being said, I'd love to see what they can do with Crysis 3.

you can say that Killzone 3 has an easier job with the graphics because of the confined spaces, or with less colors, or with shorter campaign, etc

GG set KZ universe on a planet with very harsh condition and on top of that, one of the city was nuked by its own President or what ever! and not all KZ levels are brownish, as the one in the headquarters/lab are not brown and they have colors and then they are certainly colors in the space ship!

Crysis 2 looks better than kz3 imho. Its hard to really tell but the detail and colors with the huge open environments were top notch while kz3 looked great but it was too gritty and details up close like textures were not as good. Crysis 2 WOWED me. I kept looking at the parks with trees and light falling through, its friggn impressive. The facial animations were amazing but i think uncharted 2 has it beat there. This was the one of the most impressive console gams ive ever seen and it far exceded my expectations. Best fps ive played since halflife 2. I played on 360 also and never had popin or framerate dips even in heavy combat and set pieces. Which game is better is up to you but imo this campain blows kz3 away, its 3 times longer and more open. A breath of fresh air after all the 5 hr campains that are linear. Great story also far more engrossing my only gripe is no bots for multi. The last game i loved this much was alan wake and mass effect 2 right before it, amazing.

EDIT: Dont believe people saying its framerate dips, not once on my 360 has it happened and i had zero gltches. Also people knocking it for bieng like 640p or whatever, you cant tell. Take gow2 remastered in HD, still looks dated and bad textures animation exc compared to gow3, resolution isnt the most important thing. This game has better textures, lighting, details, exc than some 1080p games. Alan Wake got knocked for this while still looking better than 1080p games(one of the best ive seen on consoles also).

Funny, cuz I have the 360 version of Cry2 right here as well as KZ3 which I am not playing atm. KZ3 textures as you say crush Cry2. I have a calibrated local dimming LED and there is no comparison whatsoever. Part of texture quality is resolution. You might want to actually go play KZ3 divine it would help your fanboy opinion a lot. Some of you people need to seek some fucking help. Get both consoles and then none of you would need to do this every day saving you a lot of time. Simple fact: Cry2 is NOT as impressive as any of the big PS3 exlcusives. You can add GT5 and Motorstorm in there as well as they run at HIGHER than 720p resolutions.

Cryengine 3's amazing first iteration on consoles is Crysis 2.

Compare how much of an improvement has been made between UT3 (one of the first Unreal 3's games) and Gears 3 or Bioshock Infinite.

Hopefully further games will adapt and push Cryengine to its limit on consoles.

I don't understand why devs still persist with Unreal, when there is a superior engine available. Imagine Mass Effect (another EA published game) using CryEngine 3!?!

From a technically standpoint Crysis 2 is by far the most impressive game on PS3 and on Xbox 360. It is the only Game that gives you a taste of what Crysis was on PC according to Gameplay and Visuals. I'm catching myseld more often simply looking around in Crysis 2 and everything feels so dynamic and alive ... even Uncharted 2, God of War 3 or Killzone did not make me feel like that. They look great but they are very scripted too. Even a die-hard-ps3-fanboy cannot deny this masterpiece Crytek brought to consoles.

I think it is impressive in the sense it pushes a multiplatform and on the ps3 it pushes the RSX to the max. But it could do more. Maybe Crytek is taxing the SPUs with other stuff, but they still don't use a deferred renderer (at least I don't think so - not fully). Next iteration could, though. We will see it that'll ake a difference. Dice will show it in BF3.

Dude mgs4 didnt look that great, its nowhere near best graphics. Gow 3 had great cutscenes but ingame graphics were average. The best 360 games are close enough to the best ps3 games that i can barely notice. Reach, alan wake, crysis 2, bulletstorm, metro 2033 all look so great i cant tell the difference betwen those and top ps3 games. The only standout is un2 which cutscenes are amazing.

Crytek have a had a REALLY good go on all platforms but for me they still fall a little short -IN MOTION- on PS3 in matching the very best exclusives.

In stills it almost matches, down to the merest details, games like U2, GOW3, HR and KZ3-to the point where, mostly, you'd see no difference.

In motion, though, they fell down ever so slightly and I also feel there'as a bigger drop in SP to MP than there is on either KZ2 or KZ3. It's just not, for me, as smooth in motion as Sony's best offerings-the pop in is too much to say it beats out the comp full stop and the frame rate is choppier than the games I mentioned as well.

That said, it's so far ahead of every other PS3 multi it's very noticeable. On 360 there's no reason, though, not to say it beats out Gears2 as the systems best looker all round but with G3 mightily promising we shall see what Clifford brings to the table(if he can pull away from fighting with people who don't share his controller preference long enough!).

Great first go Crytek, amazing multi results now give FRD the leeway to bring the best shooting fun ever made to current gen consoles with TS4-king of them all!

Just thinking, however, f the few shoddy edges and pop in could be patched away by Crytek? Maybe then they'd match the best PS3 exclusives in action as well as on most screeshots. Talented guys , whatever.Just imagine if they'd worked the PS3 centric way ND/GG did?

I don't think it's the best looking game on PS3, but it's definitely up there. I personally believe God of War III is the best looking PS3 game so far. At times, it looked like CG or similar to the animation in films. The textures, aliasing, scale--well everything, I thought were insane.

In regards to Crysis 2, it looks amazing too. Screenshots don't do it justice. Something about seeing Crysis 2 in motion, just like the first Crysis, is sometimes breathtaking. I think that's due to Crytek's skill with special effects and whatnot (i.e. motion blur, lighting, etc.).

As I said, I don't think it's the best, but it's certainly up there.

At the end of the day it's still NYC and I've seen NYC top to bottom 100X from True Crime: NYC to Spider-man 2. The visual thrill and sense of epic is gone for me. Even GTA4 had its own Lady Liberty, and now Resistance 3 is headed there as well.

I'm more impressed now with exotic and varied environments where I don't recognise the street signs. I'd rather enjoy the view from Mt Olympus or the Sprawl before another rooftop in Baghdad, y'know? There's only so much you can fawn at the Chrysler building.

Sanbox is a game where you can decide what to do. Crysis is a sandbox because it has bubbles where you can do what you want. You can choose to go in guns ablazin, you could choose to pick them off one-by-one, you can lay down booby-traps, or you can just skip that fight altogether.

Many people think sandbox = open world but they are actually two different things (I'm guessing that's why you are asking).

By that logic every game in the MGS and SC series are, to some extent "sandbox" games as-think of the last entries in each series for examples-you could use a multitude of tactics in those games but I'd never call them true sandboxes, not really.

To me a couple of different routes around one or two levels or the ability to use a full frontal or stealthy approach to manage the same objectives doesn't make a sandbox game-not of any real kind. People, rightly or wrongly associate the "sandbox" genre with games with sizeable maps within which the gamer is free to do as they wish, when they wish and don't have to follow story missions in a linear fashion all the time.

Games like Just Cause or the GTA games, Prototype or inFamous-those are full sandbox games even if, to me, the phrase "open world" is giving them WAY too much credit-even with the intricate, functioning city of GTA4.

To me games like Yakuza fit your bill but not KZ3 which is mighty fine but totally linear while Crysis WAS a sandbox game and 2 may well be considered one too(I've played very littl campaign yet)-whatever, more freedom than just a difference in ways of coping with a level is needed to declare a game a sandbox.

Crytek DID make a game that's close to being on par, visually at least, or beating out all but the very best PS3 exclusives and actually, for me, beats out Gears2 as best looking game in total on 360-t IS that good to look at.

Thing is, for me, people overstate how well it looks on PS3 a little because there's still some issues in motion with the game and it's those which stop it, mainly, from my POV Crysis2 beating the likes of GOW3 or KZ3 or U2. In stills it's a near match for those games(and HR and the R&C games which, though a different style are just as amazing to me)and CAN best them at times but in action (and the slightly bigger drop in quality between SP and MP it suffers-though even then it looks great, don't get me wrong)but a few pop in, texture and framerate issues(leaving artistic taste aside as I actually PREFER the artstyle in Crysis2 to much of KZ3)just mean, for me, the very best Sony exclusives beat it out by a small margin.

They definite made the best looking multiplat ever this gen, IMO the best ever looking 360 game bar none and pushed both consoles pretty damn hard to nearly match their own hype which is a brilliant effort. IDK how t stacks u to it's two dads on PC having not played the PC version yet but on console they did really well.

However, I don't think it's fair to say people are deluded for feeling a few, REALLY high end PS3 exclusves are slightly better to look at overall-imho it's true and I don't feel in the least threatened by any game beating Sony at their own game-I'd welcome it pushing GG, SM and their ilk(and ND of course)even further. I just wish we'd seen Crytek uzse similar processes to Sony devs as then I think they would possibly have beasted them.

I'd say it's a lot closer than that AND that the issue isn't a KZ over ambition one either. The issues you speak of ARE those I feel keep the likes of GOW3/U2/KZ3 slightly ahead of Crysis2 on PS3 but youmake them out to be awful when they aren't in the same league as they were for the WILDLY over ambitious first Killzone on PS2.

It looks great and, for the most part, runs amazingly well on PS360 and each version has it's pros and t's cons because of the true reason I feel it still isn't the game it possibly COULD have been on console and that's the need, the HUGE need for near parity for multiplats in this gen. Their prime concern was always to get the two versions looking and running as similarly as possible-whatever their PR spiel about being the best looking game on every platform ever thought of might have said.

The fact that it's one of the five or ten best looking PS3 games and, for my cash, THE best looking 360 game until Gears3 lands STILL dictates it a success and with the yoke and drudgery of parity around their necks it's an even bigger achievement to me.

Overall I think they did a respectable job with the PS3 version, but, I can't go as far as to say that the overall product is the best the PS3 has to offer.

That being said, I am enjoying this game quite a bit. Crysis 2 + KZ3 + Infamous 2 + Uncharted 3 + Resistance 3 = an awesome year for any PS3 owner, period.

I DON'T CARE, I just realized something, games that are known for their graphics now will be forgotten about them in 10, remember the best looking SNES games? No, of course you don't because they look bad now. Uncharted 2 will be remebered because it's just blew our minds with the building, train and intro. Will DX11 impress us when OpenGL 28 is out? No.

The whole push for graphics is fine, if it improves gameplay, but how about making games that have good sound, I feel more immersed in BC2 because of the sound than the graphics. I play Starcontrol 2 to this day because I love the story ( Mass Effect 2-esque ) and next generation when ALL systems run DX11 8xAA at 1080p Crysis 2 will look like the better looking PS2 games, the story picks up the in the latter half the multiplayer from my experience isn't fantastic ( COD 4 wise ) and it has only been sold on it's graphics, and I'm not buying.

Oh ok got you now, while my recollection of DK isn't one of gameplay. You asked specially for the best looking SNES game immediately i thought DK. It's only a plus in relation to this discussion that DK was also a very balanced and fun game to play. One could argue that Crysis 1 is a contradiction to ur arguement. Crysis 1 is for the most part praised for it's outstanding graphical achievement to this very day. Even though today's lets say $500 PC can easily run it at high or maybe very high settings with acceptable frames Per Second. Very few ever mention it's gameplay. I guess what am trying to say is games are remembered not only for their quality gameplay but also for whatever benchmarks they set in their respective eras.

Please, just go back to at least hyping up Gears 3's graphics instead. Even Motorstorm Apocalypse was more pleasing to my eyes thanks to it's incredible implementation of MLAA, native resolution of 1280x1080p and a rock solid frame rate.

Crysis 2 sucks on both consoles. Accept the mediocrity. Don't let this game be another Black Ops. Just because the 360 version is somewhat better than the PS3 version doesn't mean it's not completely broken on every platform.

Anyway, my Steam download of Crysis 2 is nearly done. Will be playing it how it's meant to be played soon enough. :)

Although I do agree that Crysis 2 looks incredible, the thing is...Killzone 3 and Crysis 2 express themselves with different looks.

Killzone 3 is gritty like Gears of War (And I feel its done with better taste), while Crysis is themed like Halo's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and Battlefield Bad Company 2. Picked up the game yesterday. At first glance, I was highly impressed with the graphics - particularly during the Submarine intro part (looks absolutely fabulous). However, once I got outdoors - I was less impressed. In my opinion, Killzone 2/3 does look better, and so do a number of other games.

I am always looking for games with WOW! moments for when my non gaming mates come around and KZ is just more visually impressive - art style, detail and graphics.

To be honest I haven't put that much time into Crysis 2, maybe 1 hour, but it hasn't grabbed me yet. I do love when the voice over says "Cloak Engaged". Controls are a little floaty, almost like your skating on ice a bit. Anyway I'm going to put some more time into it today, hopefully I'll be more impressed.

At this stage, though it has its moments, it is definitely not the best looking PS3 game.

Killzone 3 doesn't stomp it -- But it certainly comes out of the tussle on top. Well, in my opinion it does. I prefer nearly everything Killzone 3 does over any FPS I've ever played. It's damn near flawless to me. The slide to cover, the hand to hand moves -- It's fluid and it's user friendly. KZ3 is easily the bar. Crysis 2 tries to reach it on it's tip toes, but can't manage to get there. There just isn't enough action in Crysis 2. Killzone 3 on the other-hand doesn't let up. You are dropped in and never have much of a chance to breath.

Well By definition speaking for his own personal opinion yes he is right. Cysis to him is better graphically. But as far as technically superior not by a long shot. The character animations, the modeling of the environment, the sheer amount of action and liveliness of Killzone 3. Crysis dose not even com close. I dont own Crysis 2, but I did play the MP demo, but I can say I dont think I see anything coming close to God of War 3. That game was absolutely amazing. Uncharted 2 was not that OUT OF THIS WORLD. It still had a cartoony look to it even though the voice acting and facial expressions were top flight. If you paused or zoomed in, you could see the flaws. GoW 3 was a masterpiece. You saw it clearly when he first entered Gaia's body. Heavy Rain wasnt that impressive since Mass Effect 2 was on pace with that with a lot more action. Can imagine what ME3 is gonna look like since it will be built off a PS3 development kit? OMG

GOW3 - Hack and slash - Awesome looking. But small environments. Nice framerate.

UC2 - Nice lighting/textures/gunplay - One of the top looking titles anywhere imo. Very smooth framerate.

Killzone3 - Great looking title with sweet graphics and smooth framerate.

CRYSIS 2 - Does more then any other engine imo from what i've played and on a huge scale. But suffers from to many framerate dips. Subhd, but stunning as well.

I know alot of people go on about PS3 exclusives, me included. Most are stunning.

But until the PS3 is used as it was meant to, i'm guessing BF3. You are not going to see it maxed.

BF3 will use cell+rsx as basically 2 gpu's.

But please CRYTEK, fix the fking framerate in PS3/360.

Frame rate, online lag, texture tearing, and lighting physics all play a role in the overall score of graphics. I see some of these review sites are just looking at pieces of graphic power, and not EVERYTHING. Crysis 2 is sweet looking, and I will get it at some point. However, Guerrilla Games has managed to pull of a incredible feat of placing gamers in a gritty environment. Cryteck didn't do that this time around (It is their 1st console game, which looks spectacular!), and that is why I feel K3 edges them out. (I said K3 was better looking than Uncharted 2, but now...i change that to a virtual tie, with GOW3 and MGS4 being right there with them.)

If you know the difference, then you would not compare Crysis 2 to Killzone 2. Reason being is because it's like comparing Japanese Anime, to CGI, to Pixtar films. (These are all different styles...and one should look at each world to determine which looks better.)

You are not being objective, rather...you are taking the work of someone else's opinion and not comparing level design, physics, and online. Killzone 3 has NO lag online, and NO tearing in their game....WHICH SPEAKS TO GRAPHICAL CAPABILITIES. I feel that I'm being as clear and concise as possible, so we shall agree to disagree. I do know however, no one will be playing Crysis 2 after a few weeks. (IT WILL ALL COME BACK TO HALO, BFBC2, MW2 & BLACK OPS ON 360....AND UNCHARTED 2, K2, K3, MW2, AND BLACK OPS ON PS3)

Reading this thread made me realise one thing, you PS3 fanboys don't play your own exclusives. Have you people ever really played UC2, MGS4 or GOW3? have you seen the bad textures and jaggies those games have? have you ever played them using your eyes?

The trees in UC2 are worse than the ones on Crysis 2's streets. GOW3 is extremely blurry with added sheen and MGS4 looks bad apart from the last scene in the game. Some of you even mentioned HS LMAO! At the time HS was shown I was still gaming on my PS2 and I thought the game was literally a PS2 game, that's how bad it looked.

The only games I think will really push the PS3 are Agent & Eight Days.

KZ3 = Cartoon which airs on Cartoon Network every week day at 5PM.
Crysis 2 = Immersive realistic gaming experience.

Yeah it's easy to make giant Tree trunks in a ccramped forest, but the momment you pan the camera up in the forst scenes what do you see? nothing but flat curved green patches which is what they call leaves.

I'm not a fanboy of any console and I only own a PS3, but to say Crysis 2 looks worse than KZ3 or even on-par just goes to show who the real fanboy is.

The CryEngine 2 created some of the best modelled trees in a game in real-time, so to say CryEngine 3 can't up that is just absurd. Crysis 2 is most likely stretching the consoles limits which is why they're performing badly.

So full of fail. The shrubs in Crysis are still paper thin like COD. Look at them sideways. Then look at the jungle plants in KZ3 from the side and you'll see they actually have THICKNESS to the shrubbery. The stems and leaves have girth, they're not flat models using 10 year old tricks like Crysis 2 is.

Uncharted 2 has some of the best textures in the business. Best water and snow. You have no idea what you're talking about if you think GOW3 is blurry. For one it uses MLAA not Quincunx. Who cares if you own a PS3. You should own some glasses, lol. Crysis. Paper plants. The end.

I got Crysis 2 on Steam on friday played several hours so far, graphics alot better than I thought since playing mp demo, the best graphics (PC) could come close maybe with DX11, but their a few good lookig games out there and a few to come. Dont mind GOW3 being blurry though, and I think that MOH, BFBC 2. Stalker are good looking games aswell.

I think Crysis 2 is the best looking FPS. You really can't compare performance in FPS games to third person games. FPS games generally move more polygons, there are more things going on in the background, more enemies on screen. Comparing it to GOW3 and UC2 is ridiculous. GOW3 and UC2 have less going on, fewer enemies at once on screen, generally closer views to the character (view distance is shorter), GOW3 has your character running around on a screen with minimal movement for most of the background. FPS games move every pixel on screen when you turn and look around so they require more processing power.

Look at the pixelated shadows, all the grain, jaggies, sub-HD and then try and say the game visually (in terms of pleasing to the eye) looks better than KZ3 or U2.

Crysis 2 may be better in terms of technical bullet points but GOW3, KZ3, U2 look and run better.

Remember Doom 3 on Xbox 1, technically it was amazing but it looked a lot worse than other simpler games because it pushed the console past its limitations and you could see the strain via low quality advanced effects.

Im 7 hrs into the campaign right
now and literally having a blast.
The graphics are bind blowing and

Crysis 2 looks certainly nice, and it does have better light effects than KZ3. But overall KZ3 has just a higher level of polish and optimization. It doesn`t run sub HD, textures look better, AI appears smarter and has a very stable frame rate. Kudos to Crytek to porting Crysis 2 to consoles and I like the game so far, but it doesn`t reach that polish on the technical side like KZ3 or UC2.

If GG tried to make KZ3's engine produce what Crytek have done with Crysis 2 then KZ3 would've probably ran at 10fps or lower.

It's harder to achieve photo-realism than puffed up grey & brown blurry eye-candy.

When you take into consideration what Crysis is doing under the hood, how it looks, the more open space, it is more impressive from a technical standpoint.
Crytek could have simply done what other game engines right now have done like KZ3, Gears of War, UC2 etc:
Use all or mostly pre calculated lighting and effects. Make it a more linear experience to save bandwidth. Smaller areas overall to also save bandwidth and memory usage. No to little interactivity at all with the environment. Do not use eye adaption HDR in real time at all. Not use Real Time Global Illumination. etc.
Then you could imagine with all those features missing, how much system, memory and bandwidth resources could be saved to make the game look even better. Personally I would not want that. That's what makes the Cryengine 3 so amazing. And making it run on these aging consoles the way it looks is short of amazing. This is what the majority of members on N4G.COM do not grasp.
No other console game out right now uses ALL of these effects in one game, in real time looking like Crysis 2. There simply is no other console game doing it.
If someone could show me one game using ALL those features in an more open space game, I would like to see it.
Now saying that: Buy the PC version.
Good god, it runs flawless on a decent PC rig and blows away almost every game out now.
Waitng to see how the DX11 patch adds to the game. Let's see my two 5970's go to town with this game in DX11 mode :)

Looks terrific, but hard to say if it's the best looking. Uncharted, was exactly that. It took console gaming to unexplored places regarding visuals. I still think perhaps that UC2 sets the bar. I will have to play through Crysis to make a final judgement though. Screenshots are basically as misleading as presidential campaign promises.

the games are doing different things - KZ3 looks great, but the environments are smaller and the lighting is not global like Crysis 2. Some of you really need to read and appreciate what's going on with these game engines - there's more to it than just high resolution textures.
oh and Uncharted 2? check the background objects - you can see the texture are lower, and some are even blurry - they All make sacrifices, so stop being stupid.
