IGN: Slam Bolt Scrappers Review

Slam Bolt Scappers requires a lot of learning, and moreover, the lack of online play in a game that seems to be a no-brainer online offering is outright inexcusable. Single-player may keep you busy for a while, but the second you explore any multiplayer options, you’ll be sorry. It will likely sour you on the whole experience, and make you question why you spent $15 on a game that... well... isn’t worth $15.

I will gladly give them my $15 if they add online play down the line.

Judging from this piece that Fire Hose's lead designer wrote, I wouldn't expect Online MP any time soon.

It's not like i'll be holding out for it or anything, but i'm sure they will come around eventually.

As for that piece you provided; from what i've gathered, his issue seems to be that online is replacing local play. But what I think he fails to realize, is that online and local can coexist. LittleBigPlanet, Halo, and Twisted Metal are prime examples of this. There is no need to alienate one user base for the other. He needs to understand that they are not just making games for themselves, but for millions of people with different preferences. One of which appears to strongly be online play.

Played a bit of this today. It's an okay game, at best. Could have used some huge improvements in user interface with seeing what you're dropping and how alongside having to deal with your normal opponents.

Overall, so far I've found that it's just trying to do too much at once.

Not that I think too highly of IGN these days, but wow... I had high expectations for this one.

No. I agree that Sony dropped the ball on creating online MP for SBS but besides that I had fun with this. I can still play with people off line and play the single player on different difficulties. 5.5 is not a reasonable score. Just another $hit score from IGN. BTW seriously though with SOE involved I was sure it would be online. Not cool Sony. I will buy your game but you need to fix this

PirateThom4783d ago

Nothing to do with Sony, they didn't develop it.

Christopher4782d ago

Yeah, was developed by Fire Hose Games. This is their very first game and they are extremely new to this. Even their founder has nothing else in his history and graduated from MIT only 3 years ago.

So, having said that, they did a good job for a very first game. I still think it's an okay game. Not an IGN 5.5, but a cgoodno 5.5. For my rating, a game isn't bad until it gets below that 5. The game works and can be fun, but I think there are some fundamental flaws with it and it's not as fun to play sometimes due to the design.

this game is perfect for online gaming, I mean a big portion of the game is multiplayer and they ruin it with local only, I just don't understand why the devs didn't just take more time and add it. Hell the local MP looks so hectic and cluttered its going to be difficult to play, great opportunity missed here.

"the game's complexity and frantic nature will turn many gamers off. "
Not sure what so complex about a block stacking game.

Slam Bolt Scrappers Review | CalmDownTom

Slam Bolt Scrappers is a strange game. Strange in an interesting way. The basic premise is that you have a building area and your opponent has a building area. You then fight over crates which can be dropped in your own building area in a sort of psuedo-tetris way. When these crates are arranged into square shapes they form turrets that shoot at the other player’s turrets. Oh! And there’s different coloured crates for different types of turrets. Also there’s ninjas and giant robots. Got all that? Good.
