Low Enslaved sales blamed on poor timing

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West underperformed because it was released at the wrong time of year, publisher Namco Bandai has claimed.

Marketing VP Carlson Choi told Siliconera that it was a mistake to release the Ninja Theory-developed adventure title in October, during a packed holiday season.

It may have sold a little better had it been released some other time because other games like castlevania los and fallout new vegas were games that were released around the same time and those games were miles better than enslaved.

smoothdude4814d ago

I have been wanting to try out enslaved, however, it looks like I should rent it, not buy it.

FAGOL4814d ago

Definately rent it. Not worth a buy tbh. Plus you'll probably finish it in a sitting or 2.

tacosRcool4814d ago

Probably find it on ebay cheaper than renting it

bakasora4813d ago

Its because at that time they announced they are taking over DMC project. Thats why people don't like it. Lol

JoySticksFTW4813d ago

It's a good game, but timing is NOT to blame.

The story was ok, but not gripping or something to come back to time and again

Certainly not $60 good

If you are thorough with collecting things, you will beat it in two play sessions

Gameplay was ok as well

Then there's the dmc hate

And the HS "low sales" excuses

And then the dev comments of the characters moving better then Uncharted2's rubbing people the wrong way as well

And people blame timing?

I didn't realize absolutely insane must-have blockbusters were getting released every week or two.

People have had ample time to pick up Enslaved since release -- and at budget prices too

I'm glad I played it, but I would have been upset if I bought it full price.

For those wondering whether to bother with the game or not, definitely play it!

But as others have said rent or purchase at a low price.

Ultraplayerxp4813d ago

So glad I picked up New Vegas over this. From what I've read the game seems to have no replay value whatsoever.

Istanbull4813d ago

Whats funny is Heavenly Sword on PS3 sold 4x times better than Enslaved on 360+PS3

captain-obvious4813d ago

you deserve this NT
BEING GREEDY IN VIDEO GAMES MARKET IS NOT GOOD
you should not expect to sell a 10 million copies out of your first or second game

Baka-akaB4813d ago

The whole it's because of dmc bit is silly .. even if the would be well deserved .

The regular client doesnt check news as much as we do , doesnt know who the hell make DMC , and dont generate that kind of backlash .

The game was DOA because of timing , because the demo revealed a meh game , and because while praising it to no end , the press still mentioned a short sp only game ... in a hack that doesnt generate massive sales .

frostyhat1234813d ago

To tell all you guys its worth a rent! Imo its a buy. But you should at least rent it
Here is a good review

"castlevania los and fallout new vegas were games that were released around the same time and those games were miles better than enslaved.
"

No they were bigger, better promoted. But not better! Also, totally different games and styles.

ChronoJoe4813d ago

Always gonna be good games releasing.

Saying your game would have done well when it had no competition during it's release period, does not say too much about your game.

jetlian4813d ago

competition as far as games in general go. Its not like they had 20 action games and they came up short.

They went up against games with more replay value which this genre isn't known for.

DigitalAnalog4813d ago (Edited 4813d ago )

You would see that this is already forseen. When you complain about sales to your HIGHEST potential fanbase (which are 1.5 million HS purchases), this is not surprising by any means.

Not to mention this is a "niche" title where only game lurkers are fully aware of it. Unfortunately, that niche comprises more of PS3 fans that would've made a difference. A lesson learned here today, buyers have the POWER and pissing them off would not in any way make them buy your games.

I forsee another potential disaster for DMC, you've heard it here folks. You've heard it here!

jack_burt0n4813d ago

DA speaks the truth.

And these damn "it sold so poorly" articles every week are generating nothing but total apathy towards anything ninja theory ever make again.

xAlmostPro4813d ago

They should have just made heavenly sword 2, even if they took it multi-plat(not sure if sony own the rights, so sorry if this isn'tpossible) it would have sold more than enslaved AND wouldn't have got so much bad response from the PS3 fanbase.

I think it did poorly because it was a bad game :/

HolyOrangeCows4813d ago

Yeah, blame Father Time, not your boring platformer that plays the platforming sections almost by itself, with boring combat on the side.

Your game was BORING, Ninja Theory. It was boring and you lost out on PS3-sales by insulting its fanbase's intelligence.

Heavenly Sword sold REALLY well considering how short it was.

Cerberus21254813d ago (Edited 4813d ago )

I don' think it was so much timing,it was a combo of a short game, them talking all that trash the PS3 gamers, game better than Unchated,or anything out there for that matter, and all the other trash they said, core gamers got mad,and store clerks did that recommended the game for those reasons to the more casual gamers. I got it for $5.00 from Amazon,it was $19.00 and I had $15.00 credit, for buying some better games.

PS. the platforming was trash.

ITLoo4814d ago (Edited 4814d ago )

I borrowed it from a friend and enjoyed it, but the replay value is low. I would rent or borrow.

Mystickay864814d ago

Should've been out for $39.99, similar to BlazBlue:CS. I don't think I would've shelled out 60.00 for the game. It's a great experience though.

despair4813d ago

I got it for $22 on Amazon black friday lead up deals, definitely worth it at that price.

saimcheeda4813d ago

like they blamed SONY for heavenly sword!

jetlian4813d ago

sword was released earlier. And they didn't get much money from it due to sony owning the IP.

Cerberus21254813d ago

Not so much that but,the PS3 sales were low at the time.

sashimi4813d ago (Edited 4813d ago )

Its always the blame game with NT. If it is truly as good of a game as some people are claiming it to be then it would've sold regardless.

mantisimo4813d ago

Not necessarily, look at ico, psychonauts, okami and other games that were simply overlooked by the majority of gamers yet all have a cult following and some rereleases or hopefully sequels.

I am not putting enslaved in this list but it's not as bad a game as the demo suggested I have nearly finished it and have really quite enjoyed most of it.

jetlian4813d ago

restarted playing it yesterday. Its ok but they could fix collision animations and what not. I'm on chapter 7 I believe looking for trip. Girl up and lost it.

I got the DLC already too

mantisimo4813d ago

@ Jet what's the pigsy story like is it worth buying?

jetlian4813d ago

haven't tried it yet. still need to beat the game. heard its like 3 hours long and more stealth shooter like. got good reviews

xAlmostPro4813d ago

Wait what the eff..

@mantisimo & @jetlian

you guys just made no sense, 1st mantisimo you said it wasn't as bad as the demo suggested and that you've nearly finished it..

Then jetlian you said you restarted PLAYING(note the emphasis on playing) and you're on chapter 7.

The mantisimo you ask him "whats the story like is it worth buying?" after saying you've nearly finished it? lol..

Then jetlain you say "don't know, havent tried it yet?" after saying you're on chapter 7? .

Is this an N4G double act of hipocritical commenters? lol

mantisimo4813d ago

@xalmostpro.

I believe we were both talking about the downloadable content pack called pigsy's perfect ,whatever it's called.

I don't own it and wondered aloud (to jetlian)if it was any good, Jet says he/she bought it but hasn't played it yet. As he/she is playing through the story of the main game itself.

Sheesh learn to read man ;)

You left out The Darkness games bring those back

fan_of_gaming5d ago

The head of Nightdive Studios has posted that The Darkness is on their list of games they want to do, so hopefully something comes from that

Yi-Long5d ago

Little Big Planet 1 and 2 deserve a mention, IMO.

Good call on Motorstorm, a game released 2 gens ago but still looks and feels so good. Motorstorm 2 and Motorstorm RC were gems as well. They followed up the Motorstorm games with the brilliant Driveclub, which still manages to put modern racing games to shame. Imagine closing down a studio as talented as that ... (!) Incredible.

A little 'arcade-gem' back then was The Last Guy, a top down 'follow the leader' snake-like game where you had to find and lead survivors to safety during an alien invasion, on terrible looking 'Google-earth' maps. Graphics were poor, even back then, but would love that same gameplay with modern maps and graphics.

Street Fighter 4, once it finally had a full roster, was quite good, but it was always an ugly game, sadly. Imagine bringing that back while using the current SF6 engine.

fan_of_gaming5d ago

Good suggestions, I'd be in for
LittleBigPlanet
LittleBigPlanet 2
Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
Motorstorm: RC

purple1015d ago

God damn I love motorstorm so much

At the time I had a low-mid range sony 40” tv, The latency to the controller was waaaay too high, would to play a modern version

In saying that later I got a 3d lg tv and playing the 3d motorstorm in my bedroom with the environment crumbling around the track, was something special, specially compared to what others were playing at the time, will always remember that

Skuletor5d ago

Some good choices here and Resistance: Fall of Man is my most wanted PS3 remaster/remake. Not sure about their claim it was Sony's answer to Gears of War though.

CrimsonWing695d ago

I’d rather have sequels than remakes. Look at Dead Space 1 Remake. Would’ve been cooler if we got a new entry and it failed with sales sealing the fate of a sequel rather than just replay the same game and it fail in sales and we never get a new entry.

Remakes are great for things like PS2 and earlier games to really get a crazy new graphical coat, but I think we should ease up on all these remakes and actually do sequels.

fan_of_gaming5d ago

Yeah for sure, sequels would be ideal. But in the current market environment where many big publishers are risk-averse, I'd rather get a remaster or remake that a developer can do on a budget that will be approved, rather than nothing for an IP.

Inverno5d ago

I rather they remaster and port over to PC and current gen all the games permanently stuck on PS360. Those games don't need remakes, they need to be given a chance to live again outside of their confined consoles and then give a few proper sequels. Like Sleeping Dogs, Motor Storm, LA Noir, should get another entry.

fan_of_gaming5d ago

Yeah I'd be fine with remasters of PS3 games too, they don't have to be remakes.

The 10 worst PC ports that ruined otherwise great video games

From Xfire: "It's not unusual to see the occasional bad PC port, but these ones make the bad PC ports look great in comparison."

Kados1011d ago

To be fair with GTAIV, it was a very CPU bound game, released at a time when the vast majority of PC gamers still believed that the CPU was nearly irrelevant, and that you only needed a good GPU. 95% of "gaming" builds back then were using turds for CPUs.

Giblet_Head1011d ago (Edited 1011d ago )

Ya, 2005-2010 was an interesting period. Entry/mid level CPUs have come a long way since then.

RonsonPL1011d ago (Edited 1011d ago )

The "majority" is still just as dumb as before. The game was simply f...d.
It had micro-stutters and never ever ran properly. People who say otherwise simply couldn't see the microstutter because of their LCD display's blurry motion. It should fly in 85fps or 100fps on fastest CPU back then, but it didn't. It was a buggy, awful port. I had a CPU over twice as fast as what x360 had. A GPU 5x as fast. And I couldn't do anything to make it run perfectly.
I don't know who's fault was this. Maybe it was not the developers alone. Maybe it was because of the drivers and the fact nobody gave a flying f..k about stable, high framerate on a PC game. We've had two different OSes then, and as I pointed out, microstutters were not that obvious on an LCD. There was no Digital Foundry to point such problems out and not many people still played on CRT monitors to be able to notice the problem (in like 2 seconds of playing, seriously, you don't need any tools. It just hits your eyes like a speeding truck)

GTA V continued the tradition. It manages the CPU resources so badly, it basically cannot run at locked 144fps till this day, or even 60fps in stereoscopic 3D mode (so 2x 60fps per second) because it's so dependant on single core performance and because it's so messed up by either port devs or Nvidia (who said they will fix it, then 3 years of promises led to shutting the forums down, which solved the problem in their eyes - no one complains anymore ;)

GTA III port was never optimized for even 60fps, not to mention 100 or 120.
The port of GTA V was hidden in their cabinet for almost 3 years, during which PC gamers were bein lied to about it.

See the pattern yet?
Yeah. They don't give a shit about PC gaming or assume a buggy, stuttery mess is good enough, as long as people keep buying the games.

Actually... to think of it. They didn't make a proper Lemmings game for PC either. There was Amiga version and that's it. Only later on they mercifully released Lemmings: Tribes sequel. Until then PC gamers could only dream about digitized (real recorded audio) sounds and music. So this tradition of shitting onto PC gamers is now 30 years old ;)
