Sony’s NGP possible price leaked by Gamestop Screen shot

Looks like someone at Gamestop feels like they hit pay dirt with this photo. We won't know till Sony makes it official comment but this is a fun bit of speculation.

a_bro4817d ago (Edited 4817d ago )

nope, thats the placeholder price.

EDIT: but thats the price people want to see launched for this thing.

mukyoucom4817d ago

If you know anyone at Gamestop as I do, they would tell you the placeholder price is 999.99 :)

Nitrowolf24817d ago

yeah true, but this, if Sony could get it to this price then i'm in. 3DS will def have competition now if it set at that price. I don't want to see it at 300 at all, even if it's as strong as the PS3 seeing it priced at the same or above it, idk i don't like that at all.

Rumor4817d ago

ps3 price?? okay not bad

now is this the wi-fi or 3g sku?

@evrfighter

Good luck trying to play a game using just a motherboard and a processor lol.

StbI9904817d ago

Better yet, good luck playing NGP games on a pc Y.Y.

Millah4817d ago

I can't imagine Sony pricing it any higher than that if they want to truly compete against Nintendo. Any higher and they risk the price shock of the PS3 initially all over again. 299 would be enough to make someone think twice about picking up a 3DS.

KruLLit4817d ago Show
hay4817d ago (Edited 4817d ago )

299USD? Abso-fücking-lutely sold, even though it'll translate to 300EUR in Europe...

ThanatosDMC4817d ago

If true, i'll be damned. I got almost $300 set away for one and im trying to get it up to $500 just to buy myself one first then a white one for the gf later.

ShinMaster4817d ago

And the new NGP is going to be $299, then that's a good price!
SOLD!

Xilef4817d ago (Edited 4817d ago )

300 Dollars equals about 220 Euros or 185 pounds right now so my guess is about 250 euros, 199 Pounds, 299 Dollars and in Finland 350 euros because in Finland everything is F**king overpriced. When the Silm PS3 had been out for almost a month they were still sellig old (fat) PS3s for 399

jony_dols4817d ago

How accurate are Gamestop's placeholder prices?

What were the 3DS's, PS3, Xbox ect. placeholder prices prior to their price confirmations?

WhiteNoise4817d ago

@StbI990

That statement is funny because basically every console and handheld has been emulated on PC...so yeah he probably will play NGP games on PC.

nycredude4817d ago

evfighter

Yeah sure carry around a motherboard and processor and play games on the go.

hay4817d ago

@Xilef: Yeah, it is like that but how it translates it's different thing.
us: http://www.amazon.com/PlayS...
299usd

eu: http://www.amazon.de/PlaySt...
289eur

Arksine4817d ago

@Whitenoise
That is not likely to happen. It takes a dual core 3.2 Ghz to emulate the PS2 at full speed. Emulating a Quad Core Cortex A9 @ 1-2 GHz full speed would take a beast of a processor that wont be available for quite some time.

Its the same reason you wont see current generation HD consoles emulated.

Heck, there still isnt even a good PSP emulator.

OpenGL4816d ago (Edited 4816d ago )

@ Arksine

Emulating the NGP would be much easier than the PS3 or 360. Any Core i7 would be more than powerful enough to emulate the extremely simple ARM Cortex A9 cores, especially as the NGP version will likely only run at 1GHz. For it to run at 2GHz the CPU would have a TDP of around 4-5W, which is way too high for a handheld.

hamsterfist4816d ago

Mukyoucom WRONG. All you had to do was go to gamestop.com around the first to second day and see that the placeholder price has been 299 since day 2 of the NGP announcement. I know I saw it. I bet someone has a screenshot. The preorder screen is now gone, or at least I couldn't find it.

GarandShooter4816d ago

@ hamster

The day it was announced it was $999.99 on Gamestop's & EB's sites. Saw it with my own two eyes. Didn't look later so you may also be right.

I hope it's somewhere close to that though.

They could charge $301 and I'd still get one.

Jeff Goldblum4817d ago

ngp's graphics are pretty disapointing, a really muddy low res and slow version of old ps3 games.

ill pass

Ryudo4817d ago

Well of course there a lower res retard, a 720p 5" panel would be fucking pointless....

Sorry but $50 more than 3DS and its 10X more powerful?? Instant win.

Ryudo4817d ago

Power =/= Good Games doesn't work DS proved that, the PSP is about 5/10 times more powerful then the DS.

I still remember the DS having better games, not that am saying it going to be the same again. Just that power won't win it anything.

wissam4817d ago

Not to mention the thing can run killzone and uncharted
and resistance which is a generation a head of the 3ds.
ryudo you can keep the good games for yourself.lol.

Ryudo4817d ago

@wissam

I will because am not 8 and old enough to know good graphics doesn't always make a good game.

GamerGuy1534816d ago

Back then more power didnt mean better games but thats a different story now. Developers are going to make games like Uncharted, Killzone, and Meta Gear for the NGP simply because it can uphold the graphics. And everyone knows that those will make good games

NGP from $299 to $2.99

Hitachi824816d ago

This thing is more powerful than an iPod runs android two sticks digital and physical software.the only thing it doesn't have is a blow job machine which Sony is rumored to add to it's updated psp2 hardware update in 2012 .

xtremeimport4816d ago

i would like it under that price.

more so if the Ps3 gets a pricedrop(not saying it will, but who knows)it should be less than a Ps3 if it wants to be a hotseller.

elpresador4816d ago

.....regardless am I the only one who thinks that $00, hell even $200 is a bit high for a handheld?

Call me old school but having a portable that costs as much and/or higher than a hoe console is a bit ridiculous.

Not that I have anything against portable gaming but come on. Yes I know that there is a bunch of awesome tech in both hand helds but wow.

Anyway...........if you are gonna buy have a great time with it but for me, Ill stick to the consoles. At least, that is, until they can develope a battery that allows you to play like 12 hours or more instead of MAYBE 4 like with the 3DS on full 3D mode.

Scary694816d ago

I was thinking of a $249 price but I guess we will wait until SONY announces the price.

I think people need to realize that this time around, something about Sony seems different. Like they have something up their sleeve that their not telling us about......but people should also realize that they are not aiming this towards kids(I hope their not) . Kids are not even on the radar for this thing. I mean look at the price for these phones. 500-600 dollars without a contract. So a $350 pricetag with these features is a steal!!!!

Raendom4817d ago

"they have something up their sleeve that their not telling us about"

I see no suggestion of that at all, although I do agree with you that this thing is aimed at the "core" gamer and not children.

--Onilink--4816d ago (Edited 4816d ago )

I actually dont see any diference at all compared to the last time. Its exactly as it was with the PSP, which im not going to say it didnt succeed because it sold a lot, but unless they target a more mainstream market on handhelds, they are never going to beat nintendo.

Also why would someone who doesnt own a PS3 buy this when its going to be even more expensive, and you will get the same kind of games, though better on the PS3. They are already losing some market with the decision to push SO FAR, just those types of games

PostApocalyptic4816d ago

@--Onilink--

Well the problem w/the first PSP release (2004-2005) was that they touted that it would be essentially a PS2-on-the-go and, you are correct in that that's what they are doing today with the NGP except it's the PS3-on-the-go.

But what's different? The PS2-on-the-go sounded good (marketing wise) but it never worked in-real life because they lacked the 2nd analog stick! At least this time the PS3-on-the-go idea will actually work right from the start.

The 2nd problem was that they (Sony) wanted to use UMD as a way to corner a media-format market without releasing the specs so that other companies could play the same movies. For the PS3, they allowed othe companies to make blu-ray players and that's why Blu-ray is a success. UMD failed because they kept it proprietary.

The NGP wont have UMD, but it will have a more open flash memory.

Also, no one is talking about the PlayStation Suite developer framework. That is allow for mulit-platform game development to happen like never before; this covers PSOne, PS2, PSP, Android Mini-games, and NPG games.

This will allow developers to make games using the PS Suite framework kit, and make games for any platform that runs Android. How would you like to play a PSone game on your Samsung device? Think of the possibilities.

I think it will destroy the comptence at that price, no doubt, and no bias...for what if offers, the 3DS is TOOOO EXPENSIVE...

Gamefan124817d ago

it won't though, though the NGP is a better system, a lot of people love the games on the DS, which will appear on the 3DS as sequels or upgrades

The Lazy One4817d ago

the 3DS is backwards compatible with DS games. Why would they need to make sequels for games that already work on the system?

SuperStrokey11234817d ago (Edited 4817d ago )

Lazyone is that a joke? Cause if its not its the stupidest things i have ever read on N4G... and thats saying alot.

So by your logic there shouldn't be sequels for anything on current gen, so no new Gears of War, Modern Warfare, Uncharted, etc.

The new boss did a interview in japan he wants to tap into the mobile market like nintendio so he give 0 fucks about gamers/fans

Redemption-6413d ago

@Cacabunga
You only speak for you and those who think like you, but most fans will support what they want. Playstation and PC fans are literally supporting Helldivers 2 and that is a gaas. Maybe you wouldn't, but many more would if they like it.

Huey_My_D_Long13d ago

@Redemption-64
Look, Im not making any judgement calls about this guy, but I will say that Helldivers 2 GaaS model is unique to Helldivers, and legit the only other game I can think of thats similiar was the Avengers game except HD2 pass is still better.
The fact that you can earn in game currency in a way that doesnt make you feel like you have to grind forever, as well you being able work on that pass that you bought...on your own time without a time limit...that right there is fucking huge to me, and I can't name any game other than avengers that avoided trapping players with FOMO logic...I think GaaS on HD2 shouldn't be compared to the rest of the industry...it should be copied.

Einhander197213d ago

Cacabunga

Helldivers 2...

Redemption-64

In Europe it's a 60 40 split favoring PC.
In the US its a 60 40 split favoring PS5.

So PlayStation owners supported the game just fine, it's not getting carried by PC or anything like that.

FinalFantasyFanatic13d ago

@just_looken,
I'm perfectly fine with the way Nintendo entered the mobile market, I never touched their mobile games, meanwhile, the console/handheld stayed the way it is. As for being a bean counter, he's probably going to reel in these massive budgets that Sony's studios have had lately, I haven't played Spiderman 2, but I cannot see how they almost tripled the budget for that game.

@Redemption-64,
That's an exception to the rule, I'm expecting a lot of these GAAS games from Sony to fail, to be fair, they only need a few to succeed, but I would have preferred that they put more of their resources into other types of games.

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 13d ago
DivineHand12513d ago

True their monetization is driving players away and at the same time, their decision to chop out content and convoluted systems is keeping new players away from the game.

Joe91313d ago

I don't think that will happen based on how things worked out at Naughty Dog now that we know what we do, seems they had the option to fully commit to live service games or stay making single player experences so they gave up on their live service game. We are not sure how things came about with Bend making a live service game but I hope that was not a forced situation. Sony doesnt seem like they are forcing studios to switch up but we will see, Sony's bread and butter is single player games it is how they dominated the console market.

Obscure_Observer13d ago

Yeah, I though Sony learned something from all their failures in the LS segment under Bungie´s disastrous leadership and supervision which led to games been cancelled, studios closed and all the people laid off.

Looks like Bungie still plays a major role in Sony´s LS initiative and Sony is not backtracking on their GaaS plans.

S2Killinit13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Are we forgetting that Destiny is also a highly successful franchise? I feel like that definitely deserves mention here.

Besides, there is no reason why a person cant learn from past experiences.

Joe91312d ago

I agree, people act as if Destiny flopped when it came out lol it took 9 to 10 years for the numbers to fall yet people are still playing it add the success of Helldivers 2 no wonder Sony is going forward down this path.

S2Killinit12d ago

Personally, I see no problem with Sony also having service games as long as they make good ones, and more importantly they deliver the AAA story driven games that they are known for. So yeah, I agree 100% with you.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 12d ago
Christopher13d ago

I mean, this person made some pretty bad decisions at Bungie. I hope they've learned from them because I definitely don't see those type of ideas as good for PlaySation in general.

CrimsonWing6912d ago (Edited 12d ago )

Honestly, what’s to learn from? How to make people happily continuously dump money into a single game over its life-time? Buy season passes continuously for several years with a smile on our faces?

GaaS is a design decision that is everything wrong with this industry. The fact that Helldivers 2 did so well and people defend the monetization because it was $40 and is a fun game, scares the sh*t out of me to see that the door is open and all shift will probably be to replicate that in future games. We already know the ROI for traditional game dev cost isn’t doing it for them.

I thought with Jimbo leaving we’d see a change for the better… I’m not so sure now.

S2Killinit12d ago

Service games are being offered by everyone. Sony cannot afford to only create single player AAA games. No one can. They already said they will be doing both.

Abnor_Mal13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Ps5 gamers in 2023 seemed to play more live service types of games, so regardless to how people feel about them, numbers don’t lie and Sony is going where the money is. I mean look at the excitement around Helldivers2, people are showing that they want live service games.

Christopher13d ago

They play long-time existing live service games like CoD, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and the like. Mass majority of new live service games are considered failures and aren't moving gamers away from older games.

just_looken13d ago

Yep the huge issue with live service is they need paid players along with a reason to play them.

You forgot mobile market that also taps into that player base as well as the eve online style games there is only a certain amount of krakens/whales blind supporters compared to the amount of live service games we have its not sustainable math wise.

700 restaurants making food for every seat for 1000-3000 eaters just does not work out

Einhander197213d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Christopher

I am not a big live service fan and literally own zero of the games you listed, but that is not true, unless you call games that aren't the top games to be failures.

There are tons of live service games that are profitable.

Games don't have to be the biggest game ever they just need to make more than they cost.

I challenge you to show professionally prepared data that shows that more live service games fail than make enough to keep going.

Because all the data that I have seen shows that live service is less of a gamble than making a big AAA budget game which needs to survive off retail sales.

FinalFantasyFanatic13d ago

I sometimes wonder if we're at saturation point, where it's hard for a new game to join those ranks unless it's particularly exceptional, people only have so much time and money to devote to these types of games.

romulus2313d ago

Correction, they have no issue playing good live service games

shinoff218313d ago

Lol it's not even a quarter of the ps5s sold. Helldivers may have been a hit but let's not say most are enjoying it because truth is most(the real most ) don't care about it.

S2Killinit12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

I play what is fun. If a live service game is good I’ll play it as long as its not a money scheme which Helldivers is not.

And Im a single player gamer.

mastershredder13d ago

How do you kill a franchise that already been killed?
Destiny’s grind, cash-in-on-playbass-cha-Ching, and pop-culture-insertion mainstream-me-too bs totally killed any rep Bungie had. Sony/Bungie, if you are doing this to ward-off players, it’s already working.
