hasn't this one already been done by many other sites, god let it go. we all know mgs is the better game and always will be

ExplosionSauce4841d ago

They're also very different games.
Conviction barely being a stealth game in comparison to previous games.

NeoTribe4841d ago

That metal gear in particular didnt force you to be stealthy either.

ExplosionSauce4841d ago (Edited 4841d ago )

You had to be a lot more stealthy in MGS4.
In fact, in higher difficulties, you had to be stealthy, because in many situations a straight forward approach would get you killed.

I'm sure you played it, right?

Kevin ButIer4841d ago

OMG... "ps3 is haxed & doomed" combined with MGS4 vs Splinter Cell flamebait articles.

Its 2011 :/

shadow27974841d ago

They discussed environments but didn't even mention character models? Figures they wouldn't mention MGS4's best graphical feature.

Both are great games for different reasons and both look great but if you're going to compare the two, at least be thorough.

ExplosionSauce4841d ago

Definitely. MGS4 had awesome character models.

morganfell4841d ago (Edited 4841d ago )

MGS4 ranks as the best title I have ever player. Ever. And it doesn't have an equal.

MGS4 was about options. You could go in hard and experience one type of play or you could go in quiet and have a totally different game. Or mix it up for something in between. The choice is up to the player. I am still discovering things in this game and I have the Collector's Guide and even it does not come close to what Kojima poured into this experience.

The animations and character models stand up this day as some of the best around. The texture artists in particular deserve a nod.

Do I have to mention the option to hide bodies...almost anywhere? Kojima didn't rush MGS4 and it shows. In the Post Mortem of Game Developer the Max Beland admits the reason you could not hide bodies in Splinter Cell Conviction was they ran out of time. The game was rushed. Yes it had a long development time but they scrapped the majority of the title and started over only to push it out the door.

I liked the game but Splinter Cell deserved a better treatment than it received and could have been so much more. Hopefully the next iteration they will return to the care with which they used to craft the first three titles in the series.

Meanwhile Kojima Productions is hiring for their next Metal Gear title.

Bigpappy4841d ago (Edited 4841d ago )

@gamerzBEreal17: are you saying SC is not a good game because it did not sell as well as MG. I though is was concensus that sales =/= quality.

I am a big fan of Sc by the way. Never got into MG because I did not like the control settings in the pervious versions. But I still will not comment negatively on the game.

I agree with 'morganfell' on what he had to say about SC first 3 being the best, and that not being able to move bodies making the game unfinished.

ShinMaster4841d ago (Edited 4841d ago )

Yes, sales don't equal quality.
And SC:C isn't bad because of low sales.

MGS4 is just slightly on a different level in comparison.

lociefer4840d ago

wtf, splinter cell dosent even hold a candle to mgs4 in terms of graphics, gameplay, story, and animation !

WildArmed4841d ago

Yeah I think it's been done to death.
First of all, one came in '08, and other in '10..
wth?

Secondly,
SC is a fastpaced-stealth action TPS,
while MGS was the opposite in the stealth genre.
(unless you played on ez, then you can just run n gun ur way through!)

I really liked both games, but never in my wildest dreams would I compare 'em.
They are both unique experience, both I had a blast with! :)

hakeem09964841d ago

For me SPLINTER CELL will always be better than MGS.
MY OPINION!!!!!!!!!!!!!

darkdoom30004841d ago

@hakeem0996
and I disagree with your opinion
(though I havent played the new SC yet, MGS series is the pinnicle of gaming. Even trancending it, while SC games are *good*)

Shepherd 2144840d ago

The pinnacle of gaming? Damn, broaden your horizons a bit.

Man In Black4841d ago

Just went back to playing MGS4 after finishing Peace Walker, graphics have aged extremely well, just like MGS2 & 3.

As for Splinter Cell, I loved Chaos Theory (AMAZING stealth elements), but Double Agent was a step back, and Conviction placed too much emphasis on action and pointless gimmicks.

Myst4841d ago

Damn since you brought up Peace Walker it reminded me that I need to go back and finish that game...

Shepherd 2144840d ago (Edited 4840d ago )

Splinter Cell Conviction pioneered a new, fast paced stealth genre. It wasnt about pointless gimmicks. You still stuck to the shadows, climbed on ceiling and wall pipes, took human shields, shimmied along ledges, etc. You just do it in a faster, more action oriented manner than the typical slow paced stealth game.

i beat the game twice and if you get good with some of the tools that the game gives you, youre a force to be reckoned with. Not to mention the story was quite solid.

There is nothing wrong with doing something new and Conviction was a nice breath of fresh air.

Man In Black4840d ago (Edited 4840d ago )

They should've made a new IP considering the huge change in "stealth". Features like "last known position" were just gimmicky (I'm pretty sure it was in the older games, except it wasn't a marketing blurb, enemies just knew where they'd last seen you and the game didn't bring up a silhouette to point it out to you). It felt more like that old Bourne game than a Splinter Cell game. I'm not against change, but not when it completely goes against the design philosophy of the previous games. In Conviction, you pretty much have to take out all enemies in the area, whereas in the previous games, there was the option to never even let them know you're there.

crzyjackbauer4841d ago

as a huge mgs fan
i did not like mgs4, it was boring
i loved mgs3 and im waiting for an HD remake
and splinter cell conviction is a very good game
but its way away from the stealth game it use to be

Pollak4841d ago

I agree. MGS4 was an amazing game for the first two acts but then it went completely overboard with the cutscenes. It felt as though I was doing more watching than playing. After Snake Eater is was a bit of a let down.

crzyjackbauer4840d ago (Edited 4840d ago )

@
SNAKE EATER is KING!!!
and it was suppose to be on PS3, but sony was late with the tech and had to start on PS2 check out the limited edition bluray that comes with MGS4
kojima wanted MGS3 on PS3

chidori6664841d ago

Splinter Cell is rip-off MGS4..

in the other hand Metal Gear 4 has been around almost as long as I have been alive. This game is the most inspiring most epic game that I have ever played in this gen.

crzyjackbauer4840d ago (Edited 4840d ago )

DUDE
seriously dont talk if you havent played splinter cell conviction, its nothing like MGS4, way too diffrent games
conviction doesent have 2 hour cutscenes between gameplay

conviction takes more from 24 and gears of war than MGS

HolyOrangeCows4841d ago (Edited 4841d ago )

Another comparison of a 2-year-old PS3 game vs a new Xbox 360 game from LOT.

"the other hand Metal Gear 4 has been around almost as long as I have been alive"
I'm impressed by how well you speak for a 2-year old....lol.
I'm sure you meant MGS...

WhitePolish4840d ago (Edited 4840d ago )

Wtf you guys talking about

pain777pas4840d ago

When is this site going to just go away permanently? If they come back under another name so be it. They will get no more hits from me that is for certain. I don't like liars. MGS4 is a 2008 release. The graphics in that game are really from 2006 or something when they were designing the game even earlier. This comparison is pointless. MGS4 is still regardless of the graphics a misunderstood game with a lot of stuff in the game that people may not even realise. Kojima is deep. The MGS series is deep and Kojima takes digs at many things and makes his games relevant like no other games in the world. MGS is known for its pushing the graphical boundaries on any given platform but in honesty he always has a few nuggets for those in the know or into conspiracies etc...

Metal Gear Solid 4 - 1024×768 2xAA - 2008 game
Splinter Cell Conviction - 1024X576 2xAA - 2010 game

just sayin.

Thrillhouse4841d ago (Edited 4841d ago )

SC looks great on PC, though (such as with 8xAA and 16:1 AF, but you can still go higher).

justinb14841d ago

SC on PC still looks worse than MGS4...

Mr Exclusive4841d ago

On my PC Conviction is

1920x1080
60+ FPS
4xAA
16 AF
Everything else maxed
No installing after each chapter

UbiDRM has being relaxed and doesn't require a always online internet connection anymore.

ps3rider4841d ago

once you finish playing Splinter cell go play warcraft its suitable for you

PirateThom4841d ago

Most of Conviction is played in Black and white, that's instantly a point off.

Eyeco4841d ago (Edited 4841d ago )

most of the game takes place in small dark areas and is in black and white.

WildArmed4841d ago

I liked how they did that.
When you are hidden/in-the-shadows, it's very clear to you that you are hidden.
Kinda like what they did w/ 'The Saboteur'
Though, I do wish they would give an option to disable it.
The effect is cool, but it'd be nice to have an option to toggle it on and off

Joe Bomb4841d ago

MGS4 may be "technically" better, but there are too many CGI cut-scenes, you barely play the game!

Splinter Cell Conviction was way better gameplay wise. IMO of course. Everyone should play it.

djreplay4841d ago

You can skip them you know.

guigsy4841d ago

Kinda pointless playing MGS4 if you're gunna skip all the cutscenes though. It would be like watching a film that skips every 10 minutes or so.

Finalfantasykid4841d ago

I might agree with you if the story was boring, but with a story so deep as MGS you can't help but enjoy watching them. Of course you might not like the game's story, but that's not really the game's fault.

CobraKai4841d ago

True MGS fans know that cutscenes are part of the experience, not a detriment to the game.

DigitalRaptor4841d ago (Edited 4841d ago )

I'm sorry but what is this myth that MGS4 is mostly cutscenes?

It's about 50:50

Roughly 9 hours gameplay/ 9 hours cutscenes.

just_the_tip4841d ago

What game are you talking about, MGS4 was all cut scenes. I mean you would literally walk 2 feet then, CUT SCENE.. Hostly MGS4 was the worst in the series bar none. Snake Eater was 100 times better IMO. I'm pretty sure I read an article were someone actually beat the entire game in 3 hrs.

darkdoom30004841d ago

3 hours.... yeah you can do that with any MGS game. It's called a speed run, the requirement of the Big Boss medal is to finish the game in under 5 hours, no kills, no alerts and other strict requirements.

it's in all MGS games. :|

darkdoom30004841d ago

cutscenes are mostly (all except 2 I think) in engine. NOT CGI. as you can interact with the cutscenes.

ps3rider4841d ago

hey idiot, MGS since it has made they didn't change anything about the story line and its a movie more than a game play. but splinter cell is dam has nothing to do with story as each is independent. secondly give some respect to game got award and critical reviews not such a garbage like splinter cell

cody2oo4841d ago

CGI? hope you dont mean like Actual CGI for Pre-rendered stuff.....maybe you mean ingame?

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro41d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv7241d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_41d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga41d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos41d ago (Edited 41d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt2341d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball200041d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin41d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole41d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix41d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel198941d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor41d ago (Edited 41d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

Hideo Kojima laments that Metal Gear Solid 4's digital battlefield 'is no longer science fiction'

Game creator Hideo Kojima is and probably will always be best-known for his creation and stewardship of the Metal Gear series at Konami, which since his departure has been more-or-less on permanent hiatus (don't mention Survive). In his almost three decades these games evolved to the point where they predicted certain problems of the information age (MGS 2), took aim at contemporary topics like Guantanamo Bay (MGS: Ground Zeroes), and ended on a profound sense of sadness about our species' inability to break the cycles of global conflict (MGS V).

It's not clear what sparked this reflection, but Kojima's been thinking about Metal Gear Solid 4, an entry that was (and unfortunately still remains) a PlayStation 3 exclusive. In that entry the player controls an aged Solid Snake in the year 2014, caught up in a civil war being fought between Private Military Companies (PMCs).

Dirty_Lemons351d ago

That was a great fucking game/ movie.

DarXyde351d ago

To this day, it's one of those games where I refuse to skip the cutscenes, no matter how many playthroughs I've done.

But if you ask me...MGS2 was bloody prophetic and has aged like fine wine. That game was blasted as the weakest entry, and yet it's so enduring. I replayed it some time last year and it was remarkable.

sadraiden351d ago

Heed not the lamentations of people that say that MGS2 is bad because of the Snake/Raiden bait and switch. Every MGS game has its own merits, and while most people consider 3 to be the best, they all shine equally in my opinion.

porkChop351d ago

@sad

I would generally agree but with the exception of MGSV. It had truly excellent gameplay/combat, but dull and largely empty open world(s), and a narrative that is literally only half finished.

I really wish Kojima hadn't tried to go open world with MGS. It just wasn't right for the series. But I get it. He didn't want to make MG anymore but he wasn't allowed to make anything else. So he had to experiment within that franchise. Still, it was the wrong direction.

Santouryuu351d ago

I have been thinking about this a lot, MGS2 being the weakest and getting blasted.
My conclusion, for some years now, it's my favorite game of the series.
Going from MGS1 to MGS2 was such a big leap, in graphics, mechanics, etc.
And now it's even more relevant for being 'bloody prophetic' as you stated.

Maybe dust of my vita and play it again...

porkChop351d ago

It's a shame we never got a remaster of MGS4. The original game only rendered at 1024x768, and it ran anywhere from like 20fps to 60fps depending on the area. A remaster could have very easily cleaned up the visuals and performance. It's such a great game. I just want to play it again but in its best possible state.

MIDGETonSTILTS17351d ago

I agree, but they did all sorts of tricks to make use of the ps3’s cell processor….they’d probably have to rebuild the game in order to make it run on another machine. And, if that involves remaking those cutscenes somehow, then itll never happen, unfortunately.

porkChop351d ago

Nah. There have been plenty of remasters of PS3 games and they've turned out fine. It can be done.

ANIALATOR136350d ago (Edited 350d ago )

You can get near enough 4k 60 with it on RPCS3 these days

FallenAngel1984351d ago

War... war never changes. Or does it? The war has changed ...did it? The answer is no! Unless it is yes! No, of course it is! Is war! Yes! No! Yes?

PitbullMonster350d ago

Ah a man of culture. Duty calls

cell989351d ago

He was always ahead with this series. MSG1 taught me about the importance of passing on our genes into future generations but in a responsible way, for they are bound to what we experienced in our lifetime. Sons of liberty taught me about global control and simulation runs to test society in a grand scale, the importance and dangers of control of information. MGS3 taught me about patriotism and how that can blind you into doing things you never would have otherwise, all for the sake of politicians who only see you as another pawn in their grand scheme of things. MSG4 taught me war is inevitable and always orchestrated because it's great for the economy. Soon simulation systems will start dictating who goes to war and why, all run through proxies. Privatization of military company are already here. We already started to see how a small group of elites dictates everything that happens. Nothing is done, nothing happens without strings being pulled.

Eidolon351d ago

You learned all this from MGS?

Tody_ZA351d ago

All that was literally the themes and core story of each game, so not surprising he learned that from MGS. Metal Gear Solid 2 in particular is so relevant today, it was more than a decade ahead of its time and a work of genius. Kojima saw what the digital future was going to become when it was in its infancy. Even MGS 5 despite being unfinished and less of a traditional Metal Gear Solid game with regards to story, had a fair bit to say about language and control over it that is relevant today.

It's a highly acclaimed series for a reason, and one of my favourite.

Eidolon351d ago

I've watched my brother play the MGS games, but I only beat MGS1 myself on the PSP in 2014, and MGSV in 2016. I took the themes and plots as lore, tbh.. trying to piece together the story of MGS rather than relating them to our current times.

Tody_ZA351d ago

It's definitely social commentary, Eidolon. You should read the "themes and analysis" section of the Wikipedia page for MGS2: Sons of Liberty for a start! Game was heavy on this.

Eidolon351d ago

I'll take a look, thanks. Actually might pick up MGS2 again (PS Vita), It's been years since I last played. Might start a new game tbh.

sadraiden351d ago

MGS2 literally predicted digital manipulation of information that we see today all the way back in 2001. MGS2 became Zucc's playbook.

Knushwood Butt351d ago

MGS taught me not to pee my pants.

cell989351d ago

Yes back in 1998 when I was 13. Throughout the years more information has been shown on this subject matters, but go back to early 2000s and information wasn't as prominent. Kojima was ahead of the game

If it wasn't for the retconning of how FOXDIE works, including clunky scenes with Naomi and Liquid, MGS4 would be a perfect game. There are so many gameplay options. It felt like us PS3 owners got something truly unique and special.
