Xbox 360 is now selling better than the PS2 did

The PS2 has always been the darling of the industry with sales now well over 100 million and it still selling well across the globe, especially in the emerging economies.

However VGChartz has been crunching some numbers and has come up with a surprising situation, the Xbox 360 is selling far better now than the PS2 was at this point in it’s life cycle (In the US).

How can you say that? It hasn't done severe harm because Sony has prounced on it till this year (2011). Last year Sony started it, and look PS3 sales went way up. If MS wants it to beat PS2 then they have to pull the same cards out of their hand to do so. Running a platform on titles that are availible elsehwere with nothing special about yours isn't gonna get you to PS3 rankings. Timed exclusive COD content will only push you so far. Sony just has to market MOH the same way, get content to that, and watch Activision release another broken Black Ops title, then bam where do all the FPS fans go?

Well theres just a couple points I want to make. One, the industry is a lot larger now, than 10 years ago time, so consoles reaching 'benchmarks' that previous consoles did in the same amount of time is...redundant. In 30 years time I'm sure every console will push well over 500+ million if not far far more by then.

And secondly, at five years into the ps2's life span, it was hitting it's 'stride'. Where they started to get tons, upon tons of quality games coming out, a lot of which were exclusive to the system, AND the competition for the ps2 was by this point, obviously never going to catch the ps2.

And thirdly, if you truly want the same scenario applied to another console, it would have to be the ps3, which in it's fifth year is hitting it's stride in the exact same way as the ps2...game quality. Yes the ps3 has much, much more stiff competition than the ps2 ever did, and yet if you look at the ps3 numbers, (world wide) the ps3 has been selling absolutely amazingly, and again everyone, it did come out a year after the 360, and this article is usa only.

Nope, I have only ever owned one 360. Nobody that I know has bought more than one either.

Yes, there are some great exclusives that I love such as Halo Reach, Alan Wake, Lost Odyssey, Fable 3, Gears of War 1 and 2, to name a few.

The dvd player has done just fine. I don't use it to play movies, but it has worked fine for games. I think I have played maybe 3 games that were multidisc and it didn't bother me at all.

I would prefer not to have to pay for Xbox Live just as I would prefer not to have to pay for my games, but in the end it is still the best online service I have used and I enjoy it enough to pay the $50 a year.

Disk scratching...never experienced it. You have to be pretty stupid to think you can move your console while the disc is spinning inside.

My 360 isn't that much louder than my PS3.

The 360 has some great exclusives, performs the best out of the consoles on multiplatform games and has a great interface and online service. Those are the reasons I like it.

Now, if you want to know why a "dumb American" like me enjoys his PS3, feel free to ask and I will gladly answer.

I dont know how to answer your question cause I myself dont get why people buy the 360 over the PS3. But I can tell you why my brother in law bought his 360...or why he has one. It was a RROD console that his nephew had and he bought a new one and gave the RROD console to my Brother in law and he sent it back to MS for repair. He tells me all the time I need to support the AMERICAN company and not the other two. So some people here unfortunately are just biased no matter how bad the product is... I however have to see quality which for me the PS3 has alot more of.

I myself owned an original xbox and loved it, but just not so much with the 360. I refuse to pay to play online which should be free since I pay for online already, I would constantly worry about it up and dying on me(just like buying a pet hamster, its probably only gonna give you a year maybe two before its kills over and you have to replace it with another that looks just like it, so why bother)and all the multiplats i have played on PS3 do fine and the exclusives are outstanding and end up being for the most part, the best on the market.. Some day i may buy a 360... just not yet.

Oh and as far as the PS3 being as loud as the 360... um no, not even close, I have had my 60gb (with backwards compatibility) since launch and its still whisper quiet.. so, thats false unless yours is so dusty its having to work harder to cool itself.

Honestly yes, SOME Americans (not all) would see "American based Company" Microsoft as being an advantage over a Japanese based company Sony, even though Sony is actually much better quality. The reason the 360 is selling well in the US is simple. It released before the PS3. Alot of consumers who most likely wouldnt have gotten the system ended up getting one.

Its a snowball effect. You see all your friends have it...so you end up getting one. By the time the PS3 released the price was so high...alot of ppl including myself refused to buy.

Things have changed as the price dropped more ppl jumped on the PS3...myself included.

The PS3 being the better more valued product is subjective.

In the year + that I have owned the PS3. I have played almost all the top games on it. And you know what...the MOST played game I play...BFBC 2 and MAG (a game that some PS3 owners I know never even heard of!!!)

So I MYSELF did not buy a 360 because it was made by an US company!

Even for the wii it is going to be difficult to overtake all time PS2 sales, i would say this only because when wii arrived it was technically already dated hardware wise, and PS2 was not. I find it unlikely nintendo will continue support for as long as sony have with PS2, if people are starting to think wii looks really dated now then imagine how it'll feel in another two or three years when a further generation hits.

Wii has managed a huge lead because of its cheap price and casual appeal but microsoft and sony are looking to turn up the heat as they try and cash in on casuals and the cost of their more advanced machines plummets.

This is really why i feel PS2's all time record will survive for a fair bit yet

Wii will have to sell at the rate is is for the next 5 years to surpass PS2's sales cleanly. I dont really believe it possible, although this generation has/will be longer than usual helping wii's cause. What with Microsoft and sony now looking to get in on the act, eventually pricing their machines closer to wii and then introducing a whole new generation nintendo will surely look to update the wii concept inside the next 2 years as well.

Nintendo have a sure fire 100m+ sale machine on their hands, but i genuinely doubt its longevity. If it has surpassed PS2 sales by 2015 i will be surprised, because i think it'll be marginalised.

3 points where this comparison is pointless.
1. VgChartz numbers are terrible and NPD has dis-proven their December figures.
2. When doing a comparison like the article is doing on has to point out that 5+ years into last gen we were already seeing next gen systems. Comparing sales on an ongoing console gen Vs that generation's decline is unfair and sais a lot on its own if the 360's alegedly greatest sales period ever can't even match the PS2 in its decline.
3. US!=World. Hell at around 2004 i think even the original Xbox that had terrible worldwide sales did quite good and i think was outselling PS2 for a period. (someone may confirm or deny that as i'm not sure and am curious myself)

I think the 360 will keep selling well now that kinect is out, this is what will give the 360 long legs, I think parents of kids now see the 360 is the console of choice to replace the old ps2 now, I know of five parents who had a ps2 and now bought an xbox360 with kinect for their kids. kids love kinect its fact ive seen it with my own eyes, once one kid has a new toy their friend goes home to their parents and beg their mum and dad for it, its how it works and thats what you r now seeing with 360 as we seen with the ps2.

The PS2 hasn't stopped selling. No matter what numbers the 360 makes the PS2 numbers just keep increasing. There are so many people who have never played a PS2 and it's impressive number of games. Xbox 360 is "now" selling better than the PS2 did. PS3 translate - well there's no way its gonna sell as much as the PS2. 360 fans never said it would and that is just "now" selling better.

"NPD" shows that 360 outsold the PS3. PS3 translate - US=/=World. 360 fans never said it was. Its the PS3 fans that keep stating that it isn't.

Kinect "ships" 8million. PS3 translate - ha.. ship but not sold. Move shipped 4.1 million, but those were definately all sold to to customers. 360 fans just say "umm ok".

The U.S., where shows like Walker Texas Ranger and Everybody Loves Raymond and Oprah top the charts and there's a constant battle where a majority of the country thinks it's their "God given" right to walk around with a gun, there's nothing shocking here that we as a country would push a game console that revels in exclusive first party titles based on the military and shooting to the top instead of a console that introduces innovation and uniqueness, like the Wii or PS3 often do with their first party titles.

The 360 doesn't even need to sell more consoles to outclass the ps3 in numbers. It is way ahead in software sales due to quality of multiplatform games and better advertising. Start accepting and stop crying, stupid fanboys!

It just had a large peak in sales, most likely due to the casual gamers picking up a 360 and kinect.

The ps3 had a similar looking spike earlier on in it's lifespan which then evened out again, chances are we'll see the same here with the 360

and it's also worth mentioning that although the 360 had a spike recently the ps2 had sold way way more by the same point in it's lifespan. All 4 consoles show spikes at various points in their lifespan similar to the one the 360 has just had. If the 360 sells a similar amount in the next year there may be something in this but i doubt it.

You have to remember that launching a new version of the console + a peripheral with tons of marketing would increase sales

That's because at this time in the ps2's cycle, A LOT more people had already bought ps2s. Who hadn't a ps2 by 2005 for heaven's sake? Fact is: The ps2 is the best console ever made. It had the best games, exclusives and timed exclusives by far and is the best selling console in history. Though besides the whole rrod thing which is now sorted, the 360 is a damn good console. I don't like M$ and I prefer the ps3 personally but it has to be said that until 2009, the 360 was the best console this gen. I don't think any 360 or ps3 owner is stuck for games to buy. The quality of games this gen has been outstanding and the console and game markets are very competitive which is a healthy sign. This is a good time for gaming and 2011 has the potential to be the best year for games so far.

The 360 is selling better than the PS3 in the US because of a few reasons. One, Americans(I am one before you call me a terrorist)are the most ignorant people of the world and secondly, the most hated country in the world. Americans don't search for the truth and never will, because were lazy. Two, Americans are sheep who will follow anything if other people are doing it, whoever has the biggest and loudest ad campaign usually is on top. Three, with a very high failure rate, people have bought up to 6 or 7 xbox's in their lifetime, making sales much higher than they should be. Four, americans buy "american" products, which are made in the "US" (china, thailand, india). And yes boys and girls, the 360 is made in foreign countries, but do americans know that? Nope. Why? Refer to number 1 on my list. Five, the 360 came out roughly a year in advance, allowing it to obtain a significant install base and a reputation. Six, the media in the US completely bashed the PS3 for the first 2 years of its launch. Sure, the 360 had an amazing launch line up but does it compare to the PS3 line up from 2008 to 2010? More people would say no. And is it just coincidence that people in the US are the only ones buying more 360's than the rest of the world? I'm sure people love paying for online, have a lot less features, high failure rate, scratch-able disks, and now, ALOT less exclusives. Guess again. And before you call me a fanboy, I own a PS3, 360, and I used to own a Wii(sold it). I'll admit I love my PS3 the most, but I don't totally hate my(3rd)xbox. And I hate to say it, but hardcore gamers are a dying breed, the majority of gamers are clueless casual gamers who will buy what other people buy and what the media tells them to.
