I bought a 3DTV becasue I needed a new bedroom TV so my 32" went there and I bought a 40" Samsung for my living room. I bought 3D because the diference from a good LCD and that particular 3D set was 100€. I went for the 3D. I honestly dont like the effect at all in certain games and Im really curious about a non glasses set. Stardust HD is a AMAZING when 3D is enabled! But without glasses a few doubts comes to my mind. Will the effect be the same? Will it have viewing angles problems?

On my Samsung, there's a button that you can press to make ANY content 3D. It doesn't have to be specifically engineered for it. That's all that the Toshiba set is doing. It selects aspects of the picture for depth and uses variable 3D effects on them.

Only difference is that there won't be glasses. I am curious to know if/ how they fixed the viewing angle problem with auto-stereoscopic tvs though.

there's something fishy about this. is this the correct 3d sensation? i mean ff xiii wasnt designed for a 3D effects, so how can they get the additional data for the 3D sensation? its weird. looking for a more reliable source and trained eye.

the thing about these glasses free sets, the "3D Zone" is restricted to a small area right dead center in front of the TV. So, just like with a glasses based 3DTV, not everyone in the room is going to get to see it in 3D (at least with the old 3dtv's, you had the option of buying more pairs of glasses).

So, plan on possibly having to re-arrange your living room so 2 people can comfortably enjoy glasses free video in 3D. And plan on paying enough to buy 2-3 standard 3DTV's for it.

also, upscaling 2d to 3d sucks. everything comes out looking like it's in flat layers. kinda like how alice in wonderland does, or any other movie upscaled to 3d.

just exactly like what i thought. im currently learning this kind of tech in my campus and unless my lecturer is so stupid, i should've notice any glassless 3D that do not sacrifice comfortable viewing angle or limit the viewers number.

this kind of parallax view tech is just a dream with a false hope, it will only hold the 3D push to the market intentionally or not.

feel free to press the disagree button but for this kind of 'false hope' came from a company (or 2 companies, ms has the same glassless project too with the 'infamous' eye tracker) that used to fight with sony (who fully support glassed 3D) is worth to be questioned.

sony is also making glasses-less 3d sets, but they claim to have improved the viewing angle a good bit. that said, they will still never match the image quality of sets that use glasses. ghosting will always be there, and unless it costs a fortune expect a resolution decrease as well.

now that manufacturers are coming out with tv's that support polarized 3d glasses (the kind you get in the theater) which are dirt cheap, the "i don't want to have to wear expensive glasses" crowd should be satisfied.

Oh. That explains it! How genius of them. Rather than using an actual 3D movie to show off their new 3D tech, use upscaling tech instead to show it off. Nobody cares what the TV does with an actual 3D game/movie anyway i guess, as long as it can upscale 2D content. (that was sarcasm to the good 50% of N4G people who dont seem to know what sarcasm is xD)

Seriously though, 2D to 3D upscaling isn't that cool. It almost seems like, turning on simulated 3D on my Bravia just makes everything blurry, and then putting the glasses on makes it not blurry.

I love my 3DTV, but the simulated 3D isn't thaaat cool, except for certain games like Warhawk where there are things far in the distance.

I totally don't believe that this glasses-less 3DTV even really works at all. If it did, then they would have shown actual 3D content rather than simulated 3D crap. Maybe the depth into the TV works, but certainly not out of the TV. The price would also be ridiculous. Overall i think it's all really dumb lol.

it won't really work well for a while .. you need to be in a the "sweet spot" , you move you lose the effect. Also people have stated it doesn't have the same effect as glasses .

I just would like to say that I have a Toshiba HDTV and have had no issues with it for 4 years already. I would recommend this brand to anyone. My HDTV had the same features that Sony,Samsung, and LG had for much less.

Yea, thats what the problem is with these early models. They aren't refined enough to offer a wide range of viewing angles.

Just watches Sony's CES conference though, they seem to have TV's that can do 3D without glasses, only prototypes right now, that can offer a wide variety of viewing angles. At least thats what I got out of it, since they said living room viewing angles or something like that.

Usually when tech is first to the market its not the best. So I expect Samsung, Pioneer, Sony, etc... to have some nice TV's with nice viewing angles, greater than 15 degrees lol, hopefully more like 120 degrees, by 2012 ish.

Active shutter glasses 3DTVs:

You people who think 3D with glasses is doomed just have not seen these TV's. The effect is not the same 3D as you get with 3D glasses. If you think it is your mistaken. I have seen one of these sets and the best I can describe it is that it's different. You get 3D depth but not the depth you get with active shutter or theater 3D. Things don't appear in your face. Not to mention there is horrible viewing angles. You have to be on the sweet spot for it to work. If your too far left or right it doesn't work.

I've seen the glasses-free 3D TV's, they had a number of them at the THQ booth at E3 last year showcasing de'Blob's new animated series. I have to say, it doesn't look good. Sure, it's 3D, but there's an obvious interlacing going on that almost makes it look...dare I say it...lenticular...like a cheap "3D" DVD cover.

For the price of sets now, and the obvious hurdles these companies are going to have to leap, I'll pass on the bohemian attitude and be fine with wearing glasses for the occasional 3D feature/game I'll enjoy.

@sarshelyam I too saw the THQ display running Metro 2033 in 3D this past E3. What you failed to catch was that was software creating that 3D effect not the TV. The whole purpose of that display (near the Company of Heroes & Homefront theatre at the THQ booth)was showing off how they could use software to have a regular "non" 3D TV do 3D. It was more a proof of concept rather than any kind of final product. That said, Nothing on the screen popped out, rather it had that layered depth look to it and it definitely appeared to get a bit "muddy" at times. But, as said, the purpose from the company that partnered with THQ to show that off was to show 3D could be done with out glasses or a special TV.

This is not the same tech. And more importantly, it appears you wont need to worry about the image being blurred cause you dont have 3D glasses on (atleast it looks that way from the video) Seems to be very similar tech to how the 3DS will work at the moment. you are angled (viewing correctly) you get 3D...if not you will just see 2D.

And I was shocked to see this in a 56inch TV given when they announced this earlier in the year it was only 22inch TV's.

Well that's a problem. I don't care who you are but in a social setting, if you aren't centered, you're simply missing out. I suppose it's a great alternative to poor viewing angles (allowing those who can't sit directly in front to view in 2D) but for the price and the relative central location required...I just don't see the investment as a worthy one.

Furthermore, like you pointed out, the "recessive" 3D is just odd...it's like looking at a diorama, and that isn't the point of 3D.

..a few questions - once you enable 3D on GT5 Blu-Ray disc, will it be compatible?, are we going to experience the same depth as with 3D with glasses? No losses whatsoever with picture quality/resolution?

All current 3D sources will work with the glassless tech. Image quality and resolution will be the same, but the 3D effect is not comparable with shutter glasses tech. Disappointment is almost guaranteed if you've seen how good the 3D is with shutter glasses.

Glassless tech prices are also likely to fall much slower than tech for glasses. This is because it's so different, whereas 3DTVs for glasses are pretty much just juiced up HDTVs.
