Bungie hits back at Halo 3 graphics complaints

Developer says game is "not trying to be incredibly photo realistic".

Halo 3 developer Bungie has come out fighting amid some complaints that the blockbuster FPS, available in the UK now, is simply "Halo 2 in HD".

Speaking in an interview with Pro-G at the launch of the game in London's Waterloo IMAX cinema last night, Lee Wilson, cinematic designer at Bungie Studios said the team was delighted with the graphics in Halo 3.

But the combination of gameplay, storyline, past Halo following & MS hype make it big again. Its clearly just an evolutionary product of its predecessor & not revolutionary. That's why it is the last in the trilogy. Bungie realise they have done all they can with it.

First, Halo 3 murders Halo 2 in the graphics department. The art style is the same and that's it. The graphics quality is made even more apparent when watching save films. Anyone that says Halo 3 is graphically bad either doesn't have the game or is simply a hater.

This very game has been given 10 out of 10 at many if not all the review sites, yet once we get it into our hands, we are seeing yesterdays graphics. Games that look better are not given a 10 in graphics...what makes this game deserve it?

No, I would not have given it a 10 out of 10. The review sites let me down and now I have to question all the games I did not purchase because "they" said it wasn't worth it.

think resistance FOM, the character look far better in halo 3, so do the textures lighting and the gameplay is a million times better, RFOM was a great game though and people need to realise halo 3 doesnt look bad, its actually verry pretty

people are saying "oh it's the art style that makes it look that way". Wrong because Rachet and Clank: TOD is proof that you can still have a cartoony look and have an amazing looking game. Halo 3 is just not there graphically and it really hurt this game that could have been amazing. Bungie has been working on this game for years and it's ashame that ps3 launch title(Resistance) blows this away.

I personally feel that Halo 3 looks good, but it is NOT as good looking compared to other games on the market. Hell, even Perfect Dark Zero looks better I think. And it has that "comic" style to it also.

But it DOES look better than Halo 2 in HD. Even me, a self proclaimed Halo sceptic thinks it looks better than Halo 2 in HD.

Some of the environments are simply jawdropping. For the scale of what Halo 3 is, I think the graphics are marvelous.

The only things that aren't impressive to me are the character models. They look pretty bland. But it's all realtime, and theres so much going on in such huge spaces, that it's easily forgotten.

may be if you are playing it on a SD TV, ya maybe it does look like halo 2, but at full 720 or 1080, i just don't see how people can say it looks the same.

The sage on the ark with all the sand, that just did it for me. i can think of a lot more so called next gen games that look a lot worse.

i had a friend over, he is a big PS fan, but he wanted to see the game.

before i put it on i made him play the second to last stage in halo 2, just so he can get a feel for the story were MC left off.

upscale even he thought it still looked good, but when he saw halo 3 he was like the difference is amazing.

bungie have done well. how many dev's keep going for the same old dark, grey rundown building look....they are the one's with nothing new to show...no imagination.

if bungie and changed it all and gone for the photo real look there would be a lot more angry halo fans asking them why.

i think the game is beautiful, i had doubts with the beta but it really does look way better.

It is funny how people think the NEXT-GEN is all about GFX, maybe it is, but to me it is more like experiencing incredible game play and superior AI and multiplayer mayhem or great storyline and action. There are some truly great looking games out that lack the game play totally. Halo3 is made of pure win what comes to the game itself. What comes to GFX, it might not look like Gears of War, but hey it is HALO not Gears.

It's blatantly obvious that 90% of the folks in this comment section do not own Halo 3. The lighting in Sierra 117 is stunning to say the least, and that's the very first mission.

Yes, the graphics are not jaw dropping but they certainly aren't Halo 2 in HD. I play on my 61" at 720p and the game looks great. I've not noticed jaggies but I do notice some fairly flat looking ground textures. But things like the grass moving and if you brush up against bushes they move, the little stuff like that makes up for some of the flatness. The game felt like a Halo game and that's just what I wanted.

There are too many Unreal 3 engine games out and it is a nice change. Bungie certainly doesn't need to defend this game, the reviews are raving about it..

Razer, dude you must be blind - there is jaggies all over the place just look at any straight line, yes lighting and most textures are amazing but the jaggies take away from the experience as they are VERY visible. Multiplayer is even worse - looks like PS2 game sometimes. Pretty lame to have such allising issues in first party AAA title that they claim has been honed to perfection.

Show me ANOTHER game, despite halo3, that have:
- same graphic engine in two different generation consoles;
- that have 9-10 hours singleplayer (any game with multiplayer is infinite...)
- that is same all of the same;
- doesn't bring anything new to the type of game (FPS)(unlike bioshock);
- that have a lot of framerate issues;
- that have a tottally non-sense game story;
- the multiplayer is nothing memorable like half life 2 or UT game;
(all this statements were based reading the numerous reviews...)

The game is great and only the devout Sony boys and girls will dissagree, my issue is this game was so hyped up that even the reviewers did not do their job! "The game is nothing new"...so? It wasn't supposed to be, it is the completion of a trilogy with updated graphics and physics. Did it deserve the 9/10 and 10/10 reviews...NO! As I stated in my first comment, I give it a 8.5/10.

It doesn't help Bungie with Microsoft's rival platform, Sony, have raised the bar in terms of visuals for their flagship titles. Similar was expected for the juggernaut of Halo 3. I think that general disappointment is what is fuelling the complaints about the graphics.

It's simply because people are comparing Halo 3 to other games. And why shouldn't they? They compared GeOW to KillZone 2.

Halo 2 in HD. BUT, Is it not fun? Starting the campaign out, the first trees look horrible as the camera comes down. THe characters look..... Shiney, but slightly better than average in scope of what we have seen from Next gen games (Poly count specifically). The issue here is to make the game in this scope and magnitude, some sacrifices had to be made to fit in the 9GB allocated to 1 disk. If the game had been made to meet the graphical expectations set by Gears, It would not be able to fit on 1 disk, Run at 1080P or handle 16 players online. Watch the scene where Commander Keyes walks down the steps the first time she is in the story. She's not on the steps, she is gliding in the air over a smoothe slope ablove the steps. Bungie, get 1 thing clear, Halo 3 is not mind blowing in the magnitude the hype has been built up to. It is great fun though, has a great story and control. I'm happy with my purchase, Story, gameplay and friends play with me online. But the graphics do not blow you away. I have not seen a point where I was placed in awe at the scope of what was on my screen. It feels closer to Halo 1 in control IMO, which is a great thing. Halo 2 felt loose to me.

Absolutely could NOT agree more with this statement. I was like "meh" at first and over time it crept up on me and I started noticing the way the water moves, the amazing way the light shines off of everything, the amount of detail on the ground, hell walking out of caves and into light is blinding at points. I honestly don't see why people complain about this game's graphics that much. I love how it looks and I love they went for MASSIVE areas to battle in and I love how massive the battles are. Example of some of the combat: MC, Arbiter, like 4-5 other guys going up against 20-30 enemies at once while everyone is throwing bombs, shield grenades, snipers are sniping, gunners are up on hills, people are up on platforms in the air shooting at you, enemy ships are firing at you, brute choppers are driving around and some ship that practically kills you in one shot. It's truly a sight to behold and that's only on heroic! Like Half way through the game! The scale only gets larger. The only game that even remotely compares is Heavenly Sword.

It's no where near Halo 2 in HD, the cut-scenes looks better than Gears of War in my opinion and in real-time. THere are hardly any jaggies that I can see. fist of all ill tell you that im not live with my 360 so its jus the single player campaign that i was wanting it for . to me this game is better than halo 2 but nowhere near the wow factor that i had with halo 1 .im sure that for those playing this online you will infinite amounts of fun with this, but for me its about story and graphics. while the graphics are better than what i expected they still have a lot of flaws with them mainly character animation . to say its halo 2.5 is stupid and just downright fanboyish. but in this gen of systems graphics really are a big thing and anyone who says they arent are jus deluding themselves and being a halo fan it makes me sad to say that this isnt good enough to compete with the competition and for a game that is microsofts flagship title to show off how much better it is than the competition it falls short.i did enjoy the game and still am, bt to get a solid 10 .... i mean no way does it deserve it.to me it would get 9 at most. good effort from bungie definately a good game .

Hey if it's not about the graphics, then why did you buy it? should have stayed with the original xbox, halo1/2 had the exact same gameplay as this one. If you don't mind about the short campaign and the storyline(even though not everyone that bought halo3 wants to go multiplayer) and you bought it only for the multiplayer then why again buy halo3 and not play the old ones, it doesn't make any sense.
For me it's combined, graphics, gameplay and storyline. Bioshock had the whole pack and it's 10 times the game halo3 is. Having good gameplay and mediocre graphics and storyline just make the game good not perfect by any means...
To all those sites that gave a 9 to HS and halo3 graphics. Your reviewers must be really blind.
Also remember it's M$'s flagship it HAD to be perfect, but ended up far from it. I guess any game with a 100$ campaign behind will sell well...

After playing Halo3 for about 3 hours. I disagree that Halo3 is just Halo2 in HD. While the graphics aren't at the same level as GeOW or Killzone2. They are still very good and worthy to be called next gen.

I think Bungie did the best that they could in adapting the Halo engine for the xbox360. While GeOW still looks better it doesn't have the same scale of combat that Halo3 contains and I doubt that Killzone2 will be able match Halo3's scale of combat either.

Halo3 is NOT better than Gears...and after I played Halo3, I went to play GoW online, I thought it'd be no one to play with, surprisingly, I found lots of matches, and lots of people still playing GoW. Now, most of them had also played Halo3 during the day, and like me, most of them agreed that GoW has spoiled it for me (and them too). By that I mean, there are thousands of FPS shooters out there, the best ones in PC, and after playing Halo3 yesterday, I think there was nothing new brought to the table, same old good aim, shoot and jump, but then again, did I expected anything revolutionary like GoW? Not really, my guess is that I was being caught up into the hype. Now, I did love the graphics, and no complains in that department, storyline I don't care really, the fate of Master Chief is not a concern to me. But I will be playing, since is a game worth playing hundreds of hours online, but as far as being better than GoW...I wouldn't go that far.

telling you all this, look at my posts about Halo 3, I got the game alomost 2 weeks ago, and said exactly this! The GFX are basically a polished version of Halo 2. That is not the meaning of next-gen. Just like the wii is just the gamecube with motion sensoring, Halo 3 is just Halo 2 in HD with a bubble shiled and a crappy map editor. Its just stupid that Halo 3 was given a 9-10/10 onf GFX across the board whie games like HS, WarHawk, and Lair were given less by the same editors. WOW. Games like Gears and Bioshock deserve a 10 out of 10 on gfx, but Halo does not. And almost every editor said, "as far as im concerned Forge and multi-player modes make up for the bad gfx and short/redundant campaign mode. Since when do reviewers make acceptions for crappy aspects of Games? Something smells a little fishy here dosent it? I this entire games reeks of MS tossing its money around. And I just knew when you all were able to purchase the game for yourselves in the back of your minds you thought, hmmmm this is it? Wow...you can really say the graphics are incredible after seeing other games this year?: Bioshock, Call of Duty 4, Killzone 2, pfft I'll even say Gears and Resistance has better graphics than Halo 3. The graphics aren't mind-blowing at all. The textures have reflections now and the character models have a bigger polygon count, but that's about it. But we've seen some amazing games early this year (and last year) that look better than the long-awaited Halo 3. So take what i`m saying here with that in mind. The graphics didn`t appear to be the best in the business, but they seem alright to me, based on the videos i`ve seen. Great looking effects (the shield and stuff),the lightning was good and the fps seemed very stable too, which is very important for me.

Last i checked though, the gameplay is more important than graphics anyway (not saying good graphics are bad here, but...), something which can be said of Warhawk too, from what i`ve seen.

On a side note, i`m a bit tired of gaming site which gives game`s better score on the graphics if they like the game. They should try to be a bit more "objective" on this point i think.

I would compare halo 3 graphics to ghost recon, isnt ghost recon a next gen game? I didnt expect halo to be continued and look like gears of war. i expected the lighting to be better and it is! The animation is great, If you stop running and gunning you and actually fight as a team. Use replay to check yurself out in Slooooooooo-Moooooo. I have played the game for 9 hours yesterday (HDTV) and even though this game is a LOT of fun :), it is graphicly inferior to all the unreal eng. games (rainbow six vegas, gears, bioshock) you name it even COD 4 beta is better looking. I love the graphics. I think they are wonderful and I'm glad Bungie stayed with the cartoonish/bright color theme. Gears of War looks great but the darkness of it makes it so dreary (I understand that is the best look for THAT game though). I think Halo 3's graphics are awesome except the human characters. The alien/flood characters are great though. I have not seen a lot of the stuff they did with Halo 3 done in any other game. The particle affects, the way grass/trees move and sway, and more. I think it all comes together wonderfully.

I'd rather have bright/slightly not realistic models anyway because if I wanted to play "realistic graphics" I would just walk outside. Here's to Bungie and a great game and wonderful graphics.

What's the deal with all the "it's no Bioshock" or "it's no GOW" comments, anyways? Sure, its not as pretty as GOW; it's also very different from GOW in style and type. And, in my opinion, as well as most peoples' opinion, a better game. As for Bioshock... well... it was a good game. I liked it. Played it once though and well probably never play it again though. And I don't see what made the graphics in Bioshock so amazing - I mean, they were good, but certainly not leaps and bounds better than Halo 3 (if at all).

Honestly, I firmly believe Halo 3 deserved it's "high 9" reviews. I'll admit that yes, I'm a Halo fan. But it does everything right and almost nothing wrong.

Graphics are nice, beautiful even.
Gameplay is amazing - best console fps to date.
Party system is revolutionary.
Videos, editing, screenshots, etc.
File Sharing.
Map Editor.
Coop play, via LIVE - with scoring. And ability to have more than one game going at a time. (Unlike GOW, where you'd lose progress in your game if you started a new one with a new teammate).
Party system.
Party system.
Party system.
Customization.
& yes, Party system - no game even comes CLOSE to having as good of a setup - GOW, in particular, was a disaster for this! Epic really dropped the ball, which is why I, and most of my friends, stopped playing that game after a few short months. It died an early death because Epic tacked-on the multi.

This is hands down the most fun I've ever had with a game. Ever. And I'm sure lots of people are having the same experience that I am - in fact, I know they are. We played all day yesterday and plan on doing it again tonight, in fact.

Halo 3 is a 10/10 game in my book. Best game ever.

This game overhyped the graphics ar not banging the gameplay is halo, the storyline is like what somethings hidden beneath the sand and theres this civil war. It's not dead on. The multiplayer has never been for my tastes. I'm more of a GRAW, SOCOM real guns modern battle's. The only reason why I think this game is not all it could be is the fact that my kids are still playing Warhawk. It's a good game,b ut not a great game. They should settle for "good". Having gone through the game, I've found the majority of my beefs to be within the animations and support character models (everything with the exception of event/theme pieces were just meh). Some of the random characters and marines had decent detail but looked blocky and decidedly old school even within the cut scenes. and the animations...ugh. Just plain uninspired and ugly.

They don't have to go for realism, and it's a damn shame it's an excuse these days. If you can't pull off an amazing next-gen cartoon style graphics engine it's YOUR fault. Because people are out there doing it and doing it right. People like Valve with the STELLAR Team Fortress 2. Team Fortress 2 alone sets the tempo for the lighter, cartoonish style of western design with this generation. They sat down, got the shaders down, worked reworked and worked the lighting schemes and complementary effects, and they achieved results that everyone should take note of.

All that does matter is that no matter how much you want to "hate" this game, it is one of the most popular games of all time.

The graphics aren't "last gen". It's not Halo 2.5 HD. If you can't see a huge difference, you are blind.

And from what I am reading, there are way too many people here who make comments on something that they have never played. It's all "this player said that", and "this reviewer said this".

And really, the review crews that actually "matter" are the ones who are giving the best scores. ie. Gamespot, IGN, 1up, Gamepro and EGM. Even Famitsu gave it nothing lower than a 9!

#1 will always have a target on their back. Angry Sony fanboys who can't come to grips with the fact that this game is doing so well. Of course if someone gives Heavenly Sword a 9 or 10, they aren't wrong at all.

I will say this, I am surpised at the "length" of the single player/co-op campaign. I too thought it was a little too short. But of course I was playing on Normal and for the most part by myself. I can't wait to go back and play through on Legendary with 4 player co-op.

Keep on hating. The game is breaking sales records and it will have a huge impact on this holiday season. Halo 3 is doing everything that M$ needs it to do.

And don't think I am some M$ fanboy either. I have love for all the systems. I just think its funny that some people will just "hate" on a game because it is sold on a specific system.

If I had to give a score to Halo 3, I would say a solid 9. The only bad thing is the short single player campaign. But all in all, the game is going to live through it's multiplayer experience. And that experience is F'n amazing!

i have to say i am dissapointed with the graphics, seeing as last year (i think ) they released that trailer (the one with master chief walking out of the wreckage and the ship flying over head) and they said the graphics will look better than that.

it reminds me of the fuss over killzone 2 not looking like its trailer at e3( i have to admit i think it looks better)but good graphics does not make the game.

Some points:
1: Storage media or capacity has little (or nothing) to do with the quality of on screen graphics. Any one from the PC world knows this. If you cant play oblivion at highest quality it is NOT because of your Hard-drive or CD-Drive. It because of your GPU.

2: Graphics are a trade off. ALWAYS. Ther isn't an INFINATE amount of processing power available (Not even on the PS3)

3: You ALWAYS have to pick your priorities. Is frame rate more inportant than lighting? How about Maximum resolution? How about draw distance? How about Shader effects? Polygon count?

It isn't easy to compare 2 different games on graphics as they will be a different mix of the above qualities. - One may have better Models but a shorter draw distance (or less characters on the screen) or better lighting but a lower frame rate, etc... Plus Art style throws a wrench in any attempt at comparison...

For example: Fall of man has a more "Photo realistc" color pallet than H3. But that has NOTHING to do with graphic power and everything to do with art direction... But fall of man has far less impressive lighting (or conversly H3 has very impressive lighting). Lighting, which really pounds on a GPU...

GOW has better models(more detail for Characters and environments) Yet has a short draw distance because of its smaller and confined levels... Your system has a maximum # of Poly's in can handle per second. he farther you can see the more ther IS to see(And draw)

The only complaint I have is the ant-alising. In 1080i(p) it isn't really too bad, but in 480p it's pretty noticable.

If I were bungie I would release a patch that detects if you are in a lower resolution and turns on 1x or 2x AA(If i'm in 480p the 360 should be able to handle that)

...we're even debating this point suggests that we thought the graphics in Halo 3 would be better. Its not to say they are bad, quite the opposite, but are they the best that could have been pulled off?

My concern is that in a single level graphics can go from "wow" to "oh". The fact that there seems to be no anti-aliasing yet framerate drops is also disappointing. Character models feature quite low poly counts - just look at the block fingers on the hands of other marines!

The shadow cast from your character also does not line up quite right. Just take a while to watch your shadow when you move and you'll see what I mean. There is also a lack of shadows from destructible or moveable objects around the environments. Pre-rendered shadows of course look fine.

Textures are fine for the most part however, st times they can look bland and thats what reminds me of Halo 2 the most even though I am using an HDTV.

Is Halo 3 simply Halo 2 in HD...no, its better than Halo 2 but its not up to the same level of quality as we've seen in other 360 titles. Is Halo 3 the best all round FPS on the 360 so far....you bet!

My biggest gripe with Halo 3 is the lack of settings around audio. Why do the weapons come across muffled where as voices and music boom through accordingly. As a result the weapons don't have anywhere near the same level of presence as say those in COD4. And yes, I do have a 5.1 setup.

The human character models and water effects leave a little to be desired. The rest seems pretty good though. The graphics aren't the best that the 360 has seen or will see, but the atmosphere of the game is incredible. The background scenery and music work well together to create a certain vibe in each level. Not to mention the bread and butter of the game, which is the gameplay itself is great. Halo lives up to the hype, if you're a shooter fan.

I've only tried H1 on PC and didn't like the campaign. I skipped H2 and now have tried H3 and I love it. I almost finished SP yesterday and today finished the game co-op with my buddy. The graphics didn't look that good at first, but after the fourth level as someone mentioned. I was stunned (The starship I suppose), so many explosions at time with a rock solid framerate in splitscreen.

The gamplay is also fantastic (I loved the last part of game where u had to drive with jeeps on a breaking surface). At first I was teaching the friend how to even play this kind of games (he played so slow - cat and mouse style - that he's campaign could last 30hours) at the end he was almost as good as me.

Now I only hope that I will have as much fun with cod4.

that transitioning from one generation of a console to another yeilds graphical changes. Point is the elements that made halo 2 so great have been retooled for 3 and the old phrase of "if it ain't broke, why fix it" comes to mind. Bungie really improved on a lot of the finer details of the game more so than an overall graphical overhaul.

I liked the graphics in halo 2 and will like them in 3 but I am more interested in the story and how it ties the first two games together. It is like star wars. Not the greatest looking batch of movies in history but it is the story and the way they are tied to each other that makes them greater than their appearance.

It just goes to say how well the original formula was to allow the evolution of the game to flow from previous gen to next gen. TOD is R&C in HD. they can say art design all they want, but cant they just own up and accept criticism? Halo was hyped like the second coming of christ and it does have some issues.

the campaign was short and conveluted,the covenant civil war was almost retconned and I never felt driven by the plot. *except for the last level which is a blast and brings it back to Halo's roots*

and I can see how critics could have despised the second too last level, even with two players I had such a hard time on that level, took us about an hour and a half too finaly clear it.

but this is about the graphics, if you think they are that great then please tell me why the energy sword looks almost identicle too its halo 2 counterpart? I thought they could have at least added some effects to make it look like it were actualy made of energy.

dont get me wrong graphics are not everything, but the human model facial animations were almost painful too look at.

the game is fun, its definetly an improvement over Halo 2, but it isnt perfect and I still think Halo:CE was the best instalment of the series.

i would have to agree.... its not that graphics were a letdown, but its really halo HD. Some parts are very impressive, and I think they did an awesome job with the game. Its the whole package that people love...the campaign, music, co-op, online and the art style Bungie chose, which is not photo realistic.

It should also be noted that Bungie did the smart thing releasing in sept...why? because then you dont have games like Call of Duty 4 or Unreal T3 to compete with that can make Halo look dated....not bad, but dated.

I think Halo is a very fun game and more then I expected. I never been a Halo fan but bought this game so I can play campaign co op with my friends. Graphics doesn't define a game the fun factor does. Now does this game lack in the graphics dept it sure does. But do I care? not really. I dont even know why this is such an issue. I don't even own a XBOX 360, but I have to be honest and upfront, I think the games is great. I own a PS3 but I have to give credit when credit is due, neither am I a fanboy.

I just beat the game and like I said the ending pissed me off... Total cop out... I could see it coming too... The graphics were fine though. Nothing amazing but from my understanding bungie is a small team... Same time they had MS backing them the whole way... Sooo I dunno...

The game itself was fun. I wont play it again though. Tomorrow Ima get into some serious multiplayer and make my final opinion then... Overall I enjoyed it but don't think it lived up to the incredible amount of hype.

The forge is ok... I played around with it for a while... What else... Graphics are fine though. Some jagged edges and some harsh lag at points... I kinda got annoyed with the whole "Mind projection" thing. The game was linear, short, challenging, fun, I also feel the AI was not what they hyped it to be either... over all good but by no means held up to the hype... AAA? Sure. PS3 Killer? No... Not by a long shot... I mean... Xbox fans can say PGR4 all they want... PS3 owners dont want it with GT4 comin... 360 fans can say Mass Effect!!! FTW!!! PS3 owners will say they can keep it with FF coming out... Overall I think the war is far from over now...
