The Year In Disappointments

Kotaku: "These are 2010's biggest video gaming disappointments. Now, before we go any further, know that few of the things we're listing below were terrible. These aren't the worst things in video gaming for 2010. They're just the things that we hoped or expected would be at a certain level of quality or success, but for whatever reason, were not. In other words, a disappointment!"

HolyOrangeCows4859d ago

All of these titles (except Starcraft) had me saying "D'OH!"

Yi-Long4859d ago

... although TBh, that's nothing new anymore.

Poor XBLA-ports of classics, a shitty Sonic 4 with a ridiculous pricetag attached to it, and the brilliant Valkyria Chronicles (PS3) saw a mediocre sequel on a system that failed to do the original's gorgeous style any justice.

'Sega's' highlights were Bayonetta and Vanguish, which both got the usual piss-poor marketing by Sega.

I really hope for 2011 Sega hires a couple of guys who actually have a clue as to what their fans WANT, and on what systems they want it.

I seriously doubt it though.

Fred-G-Sanford4859d ago

GT5 was the most disappointing game of the generation, but because of it being a PS3 exclusive, many people have to pretend that it is an awesome game.

I know that hurts a lot of butts, but I'm sorry, it's the truth. lol

CrzyFooL4859d ago

Vanquish was good. Sonic Colors was pretty good on DS. Bayonetta was good. That other thing they did . . .

Pumbli4859d ago

What about Napoleon Total War?

Though it may not be on the same scale as other Total War titles, Creative Assembly tweaked the engine big time and improved and changed most of the things people hated about Empire Total War.

It's a bit like Rome Total War Alexander but more of game rather then some lame mod-like expansion.

Terror_B4859d ago

Yeah, GT5 was a big disappointment, having to wait so long for a "meh" game after so many promises. Im getting used to being disappointed with my PS3 i should just sell it and get a standalone Blu ray player because thats all its good for.

Commander_TK4859d ago

Homer Simpson. the greatest fictional character of all time.

Vega754859d ago (Edited 4859d ago )

I agree the GT5 was a disappointment to me especially with all the hype the game was getting from game sites and fanboys. But it all comes down to preference. I don't agree with kotaku about Alan wake or Starcraft 2 being a disappointment. But hey I can respect their opinion ( even if I don't agree with it) without calling them bias or anything.

Many people feel that GT5 lived up to their expectation and that how they feel. Again I can respect that even if I don't agree. I don't think anyone feels they have go love the game because is a Sony exclusive. I think they love it because they just do.

The point I'm trying to make is. You have the right to your opinion of being disappointed by GT5. I just think you don't need to insight a flamebait war with your comment.

I totally agree with starcraft 2. That's why i didnt buy it, it was too much like the first one.

fatstarr4859d ago

well thats like saying I am glad I didnt buy cod 5 6 7 8 because it was just like cod4

if you have something thats really win and successful. you dont change it, starcraft has a whole country and billions of addicts. why change the formula.

capcom had MVC2 successful game and they changed the formula, we will see how that plays out for MVC3

Daver4858d ago

@fatstarr

''Why change the formula?''

well simply because it is starcraft 2 and not 1...

more than 10 years for a game that is so similar to 10 years ago... people could still have played starcraft 1 if they didnt like the new starcraft...

jessupj4858d ago

Wow, finally a 'top disappointments of 2010' article that doesn't have GT5 in it. Thank you.

Cajun Chicken4859d ago

Crackdown 2, franchise right down the pan after the promiaing and still fun original. To add salt to the wound, Prototype 2 being 2 years away.

rumplstilts4859d ago

Starcraft 2? Disappointing? What were they expecting? Starcraft 2 does everything a good RTS needs to do and it did it masterfully. My only gripe is the Zerg feels a little underdeveloped in contrast to the more full featured Protoss and Terran. But there is always "Heart Of The Swarm" to look forward to. Either way I disagree with Stacraft 2's inclusion on this list.

Thanks for delivering, Blizzard.

SnakeMustDie4859d ago

Starcraft 2? Disappointing? Wow, talk about someone who doesn't know what they are talking about. My only gripe for SC2 is that the campaigns are split but I don't complain because the expansion packs will have a fully-loaded polished campaign for Zerg and Protoss. Now patiently waiting for Heart of the Swarm.

Kind of a goody story...

On a serious note, that is why I try activating gift cards asap. It's happened to me where the store didnt scan it right where the card was unusuable. Happened at Wally World.

gigoran83d ago

wait, that place is real? national lampoon wasn't kidding?

Tacoboto2d ago

I just bought two of the MonsterVerse Godzilla movies on 4K - both had digital copies expiring in 2023. Both were actually expired.

I'd be surprised but it's WB, of course they'd actually expire them

Knightofelemia3d ago

Usually most of those redemption card have an expiry date on them. If they expired all buyer did was buy recycled paper. And some of those codes are country locked to certain countries. I buy a card from the States I can't use it in Canada.

Chocoburger3d ago

Dumb and silly story. She wasted her money for no reason.

Is it really that hard to go to Steam or GOG. She spent $240, when its currently 70% off on GOG, and only costs $4.49.

Gee, I wonder, should I spend $240 on eBay, or $4.49 on GOG? 🙄

Rynxie2d ago

Most likely she wanted to resell a few or most of them. However, it was a too good to be true situation.

3d ago
Profchaos3d ago

So in short she paid $240.00 assuming usd for a bunch on unactivated game codes.

I still don't understand why I guess cause there's not a physical version and she wanted something for a collection or art project.

Rynxie2d ago

No, most likely to resell. However, she ended up getting screwed.

Asplundh2d ago

This is Alan Wake 1, it had physical copies.

The 7 Best Final Fantasy Characters: Unveiling the Legends

While FFVII ranks highly, there's more to the series than one game. Here's Chit Hot's picks for the seven best Final Fantasy characters.

220°

The older it gets, the more I respect Final Fantasy XIII

Alex Donaldson: "Hindsight is a hell of a thing, however, and in the years since Final Fantasy XIII, my respect for the decisions its developers made has skyrocketed. In the two Final Fantasy titles since we see both the brilliance and the folly in alternative approaches - and in Final Fantasy VII Remake, we get a more nuanced understanding of what FF13 was trying to accomplish from many of the same development leads."

Einhander1972118d ago

FFXIII is actually one of the best Final Fantasy games.

I also sort of was disappointed at the time, never as much as the bandwagon. But really all the fantastic 3D rendered cutscenes and I actually liked the characters and the story though convoluted was actually fantastic and the ending was extremely emotional. So much budget and time were put into that game Square had such big plans, I actually have always felt kind of bad for how things played out.

I have been thinking for years how great it would be to get all three games on one disk for PS4 or 5.

Nyxus118d ago

I always liked this game, and I agree, a rerelease for current gen would be nice.

Shane Kim117d ago (Edited 117d ago )

Gotta take off the nostalgia glasses. It's the worst FF. Shiva as a bike, I mean come on.

Elda117d ago

Shiva as a bike is strange but saying FFXIII is the worst FF is not at all a fact, that's simply your opinion.

Terry_B116d ago

*One of the 3 equally bad FF's

DivineHand125117d ago (Edited 117d ago )

When I got my series X a year ago, I bought FF13 for nostalgia reasons but ended up being disappointed. When I first played it around the time it launched, I didn't have a lot of experience with final fantasy games, so I enjoyed it. Fast forward to when I played it again, I found that the game had many unnecessary filler moments instead of just giving us meaningful content.

The game is also very linear and a quote on the article said it best. "It is like a sewage pipe that leads to the ocean until it opens up on Grand Pulse."

The story didn't make much sense either and I believe it is my mistake as I played the FF7 remake on PS5 prior which is a night and day difference in terms of pacing, storytelling and likeable characters even though cloud is aloof.

FinalFantasyFanatic117d ago (Edited 117d ago )

Probably was a mistake to play any of the golden era FFs first (e.g. FF6 through FF10), it makes it harder to enjoy some of the FFs that aren't as good. I think FF12 was where major issues with the series started becoming apparent, and it just got worse from there.

FinalFantasyFanatic117d ago (Edited 117d ago )

I didn't really care for it that much, the only saving grace was that it had a better story than 15 (overall it was better than 15) and possibly 12, and even then, you had to read some of it through primers, like reading a book. Plus the battle system was reasonably fun for what it was, even if it was more the spectacle that was exciting for me (e.g. summoning). And to be fair, the 13 trilogy got better with every games, I still don't like Snow though.

Gamingsince1981116d ago

Ff13 is only good if you haven't played a ff before, or any other games that are decent for that matter.

-Foxtrot116d ago

It is in fact no way the best Final Fantasy game, it's one of the worst

Linear corridors, Cutscene, Fight, Cutscene...rinse and repeat

Dialogue and characters are pretty bad, especially Lightning as the main FF hero, they literally said they tried to make a "Female Cloud" and they failed.

Story was pretty awful

I could go on

I think the only alright thing that came from the game was the music.

Elda116d ago

That's not a fact that's your personal opinion. The game sold 11 million copies between its 2009 release up until 2014 including critically reviewed as an 8 out of 10 or an 80 out of 100. The game does have some issues but it's not at all a fact as one of the worst FF games.

-Foxtrot116d ago

Elda

Not just mine mate

A large majority

So….

Traecy116d ago

N4G commenters such as yourself aren't the majority. The game was well received.

i liked the game alot but i didnt like how they handled the terminology.

i dont mind reading data logs but it had soo many.

but i always loved the music and how it looked. the battle system wasnt too bad either.

but i like 13-2 more :)

i still dont understand why we never got a remaster of the trilogy

Eonjay116d ago

Xbox kinda did. Besides the video files of course which are still best on PS3 due to bluray.

Snookies12118d ago

XIII is a pretty solid game, but XIII-2 is WAY better. XIII-2 was one of the few games I decided to go for a Platinum trophy in, early on. Had so much fun the entire way through getting it too!

Eonjay116d ago

Totally agree. FF 13 was okay but 13-2 is my favorite FF game ever.

shinoff2183118d ago (Edited 118d ago )

I hated this to when it released. I haven't much liked a ff game since ff10 as much , aside from ff7remake. I decided to give it another shot on my series x since it's not on a current ps and was liking it quite a bit(just takes me some time to get over things ) until star ocean 2 remake came out I was all over that.

Square should definitely remaster it or something for ps4 ps5

KillerB117d ago

my favorite jrpg trilogy ever
