The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim uses brand new engine

XMNR: Speculation about The Elders Scroll V: Skyrim has been running rampant since the teaser traileras shown at the Spike VGAs and the teaser site went live soon after. We know one thing for certain though, the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 game from Bethesda Softworks won't be built on the same game engine as any previous games.

Wasn't Oblivion pretty polished? In terms of bugs it seemed to be perfectly standard considering how big that game was from what I recall. It's Fallout that is ugly.

I can't wait for Skyrim, potential GOTY 2011. I always loved the beautiful world of oblivion over Fallout. Stepping out of the sewers in Oblivion was one of the best memories I have this gen.

Yeah Fallout was where it got bad, but the engine is still outdated as hell.

I may get disagreed to death, but I though that Oblivion didnt have that unique variety that Morrowind had. But I do admit that my favorite quest in Oblivion was the unmarked sidequest where you had to recue the painter lost in painting. That was just as awesome as FO3's Tranquility Lane. I hope that ESV will have more of those 'WOW' moments, than just exploring dungeon after dungeon. Elder Scrolls is such an amazing universe., I love exploring every inch of each world.

One of if not my favorite RPG this gen. The only thing that I hope that they get is more originality in the environments. More set pieces. No more Oblivion gates type stuff. That was my biggest criticism. 1 or 2 gates is enough. Move support would be wise. Hear me out. Having the option no need to make it madatory but I think that if any game would be good with move right out the gate its this one. Sony shovel cash to make it happen and be implemented properly. Love this series. Really excited. New engine is not a want its a need. If the game looks, animates anything like oblivion I will think twice about buying this game though.

Hope this game does not take place entirely in Skyrim, because that place is supposedly full of snow. I like my forests and mountains but not so much the bland, cold snow.

EDIT: I read last night (trying to find the link) that this engine is specifically tailored for open world games. That would indicate better draw distances, massive area to explore, shorter load times, etc. I'm going crazy. 11.5 months to wait and trying not to watch footage as it gets leaked is going to be very, very hard.

A PC installation is a one time thing. I don't get how people think running an installer is complicated.

Install it once, and all you have to do is click on a desktop icon to launch the game. You don't have to go looking for the disk or anything.

AMD just released the 6870 and 6850 graphics cards. You will probably want to get a PC that uses those. The 5770 is about 1.5 years old now. The 68XX graphics cards have better tessellation performance, which is going to be something that matters in the future. Hardware tessellation gives the same detail as parallax occlusion mapping but is less computationally expensive. It is important for infinite level of detail as well. I would even suggest a rig with 2 6850 or 6870 cards set up in a crossfire configuration.

As for the RAM, that really depends on the rest of your rig's hardware, what you would use the computer for and what exactly you desire performance wise. For instance, I do a lot of development work on my computer. At any given moment I might be compiling a program, twisting polies in Maya, effecting in Photoshop, writing a few lines with Dreamweaver and composing some sounds. Because of everything I use my computer for and the performance I desire, I have 12GB of RAM in my computer and an SSD. I've turned off the system page file, disabled indexing, automatic defragmenting and all disk caching. Having a lot of RAM is necessary if you turn off the system paging file and don't cache anything to disk because everything must reside in memory; if you run out of physical memory to use, your system will crash. On the upside of being limited to the amount physical memory, you will get a performance boost because you don't take the I/O hit from accessing the disk during a page swap; accessing RAM is always faster than accessing a hard drive.

Not to be rude, but if you have a more than capable PC and are buying a Bethesda game on a console you deserve a slap in the face.
Seriously, mods alone at hundreds of more hours of playability (see tesnexus and some of their insane mods), the game looks considerably if not exponentially better than its console counterparts and the community is much better, Oblivion on the PC actually as a usermade patch called the Unofficial Oblivion patch that actually fixes thousands of bugs Bethesda never bothered with. Also, if any stupid things happen with bugs (I had a bug that due to pathfinding caused a major quest npc to walk off a bridge and die) can be fixed with console commands.
And if the PC you're getting actually has the specs you listed it will dick-slap anything coming out on NEXT generation consoles.

You know you have a bad engine when newer games like Fallout 3 look worse then its predecessor Oblivion. Maybe it was just the colors in the game that made Fallout 3 look bad. Either way that game was vomit to look at.

Morrowind to be released late 2001 but got delayed until 2002 (xbox console was released nov 2001)

Oblivion to be released late 2005 but got delayed until 2006 (xbox 360 released nov 2005)

Fallout was the shitty one. Oblivion was fairly smooth. But this is excellent news. I can't wait to play this game. It's become like my most anticipated game ever.

Will Elder scrolls 5 be a good game? YES! but as a PC gamer I expect DX11 as Bethesda had enough time to implement some features. DX11 just runs DX10 a whole lot smoother plus has all the new eye candy.

For PC gamers good games are what we want but if a dev makes a game that only uses 1 core, bottlenecks the GPU, which interns creates image quality concerns, bugs, screen tear, and stupid A.I. then we know the devs are amateurs and they suck cause they are not efficiently optimizing the game like DICE or Valve always does.

Piracy isn't hurting PC gaming because only console ports get pirated while PC builds make huge profits through STEAM.

all this "new engine" announcement is just an attempt to head off all the criticism. As soon as they announced skyrim the first words out of everybody's mouth was either "If it uses gambryo I'm not buying" or "gambryo sucks". Because an employee was quoted as saying that the rpg they are working on is using gambryo not idtech. He went on to say that the changes they made to gamebryo for the upcoming RPG is bigger than the changes they made between Oblivion and Fallout 3.

It's The Elder Scrolls, gentlemen. Despite all of the petty complaints, this series is pure greatness and it is a defining event every time a new one is released.

Think about it, by the time this releases next year it will have been five years since Oblivion. They are not rushing or skimping out on the next epic in this series and I am sure it will be a huge leap over Oblivion as a result. The announcement is new to us, but they have been planning and working on this for years now.

This is Bethesda's flagship series and they know that they absolutely must deliver an improvement over Oblivion. I expect nothing less than a face melting, addictive as hell, enormous and content-packed epic that will suck hundreds of hours out of your life with ease. That is just what this series is all about and Bethesda knows this. That is why it has been five years since the last one. A game this great is not made in a year or two and I have no doubt that it will show once we finally get to see it... and ultimately play it.

It is good to see that engine go was one of the worse engines around. Until I see actual gameplay I will not even consider this game at all. Well, it's an RPG so it takes a couple hours to barley get going. The graphics for an open world were NOT bad. Oblivion had great art design and colors. The character models were pretty bad but oh well. Dungeon crawling in Oblivion was the best I have ever done. Hours and hours of it. Top it off with a world renowned composer, literally hundreds of hours of gameplay and voices of top notch actors and you have a great game.

This was a huge surprise announcement for me! Didn't think they would announce it so close to release. Can't wait to get back into my favorite series. It is weird that they are announcing it is on a new engine though. Todd Howard (head guy at Bethesda) at stated multiple times that they were sticking with a heavily modified version of the gamebryo engine. I hope by "new engine" he doesn't mean "so heavily modified version of Gamebryo, that it seems like a new engine". That game engine was great for Morrowind, ok for Oblivion, and incredibly dated by the time FO3 and New Vegas came out. Can't wait to see what they bring!

Well this is shaping up to be quite the year. All these amazing games coming out and now we hear about TES V. There were other years which had great games but 2011 will force me to get a second job lol!

The only issue I took with the last engine was the terrible character models. Even back then, they were a disgrace. The backgrounds are still amazing to this day though.

I so enjoyed the last one, you soon overlook the poor characters once engrossed into the story. Day one purchase for me :)

Even though there are a fair amount of bugs in Fallout 3 and Oblivion (Oblivion having less) the games are still brilliant.

With the time they have had and the feedback they obviously would have received im sure they are going to create something amazing.
