ESPN Attacks Kobe for Black Ops Commercial and gets spanked in their comment section

ESPN asks whether Kobe should be appearing in a commercial for an evil, violent video game. The real story is in ESPNs comment sections for this story however. Even non-gamers are incensed.

I watch this show (1st n 10) on ESPN almost every day.
I was watching the day this aired. I knew somebody would make a story out of it when I was listening to them debate this.

The red head (Skip Bayless) has admitted several times before to never playing video games.

They were mostly viewing it more from an NBA league rules perspective than anything. This is how most people that don't game view violent games. Personally I think everyone (politicians, school teachers, talk show host, etc and so on) should keep their traps shut when they have no hands on experience with gaming.

I think the commercial is great.

The best part? Right after they were done debating this they cut to commercial and guess what they aired? Yup, this very commercial they were bitching about.

What's wrong with kids handling and shooting guns? This is what's going wrong with the pussification of the U.S., especially communistic states like New York and California. Guns are not bad, people are bad. I own guns and I also have my 10 year old shoot with me regularly. When taught the right way, shooting can be a safe and fun recreation for all.

This is one reason I love COD, they have introduced a whole new generation to the world of firearms, and reinvigorated it. The AR type of rifles are more popular than ever as a result.

After reading the article provided by the link (not really paying attention to the video), I can understand the morticians sensitivity to the situation. However, with that being said, the bottom line is that this commercial shouldn't be any more offensive than the average war movie commercial. What about commercials for NCIS, Detroit 1-8-7, CSI, etc. that ALL feature prominent gunplay to entice viewers towards some promise of vicarious violence? At this point, it seems like the en vogue thing to pick on video games. I know that these are the growing pains of an burgeoning industry. But, at some point society is going to have to understand that gaming has grown up (as most of us have with it). There is something to be said about the glamorizing of gun culture (for children), but this has been going on for years, and it's unfair to point the finger at video games. It's a complex subject. I suggest that most males from a very young age enjoy shooting stuff and blowing stuff up. I remember playing 'soldiers' as a child, shooting my friends with a wooden gun ten years before I had a game controller in my hand. Now I'm ultimately doing the same thing with my 360. But I do think there should be stricter laws to prevent children getting their hands on violent media (to protect them, and to stop having their whiny little voices on xbox live).

There's bound to be certain people in certain positions who get offended by it. Yes gun crime is a real problem in the US. I'm sorry but I don't see empirical evidence that any of this is influenced by video games.

I've never liked Kobe but after hereing this bull i think i'm changing my stance. By the way if you look up the guys name that wrote the article you will find that he hates Kobe. So obviously he's going to make a big deal about this. It's just a game and Kobe realizes that. They completely misunderstood the commercial! The whole point is that you get to role-play as a "soldier" and run around blowing up your friends. Escape from the day-to-day, and fantasize for a while. Whether you're a businesswoman, a line cook, or a friggin' professional basketball player, everyone can play.

The reasoning is this: This game is hardcore and intense, but it appeals to you, the everyone. Look at this, here! Jimmy Kimmel plays this game, shouldn't you? Go pick up this game, have a good time, and be just like your idols.

A list of issues with this so here goes:
-We are no longer fighting the War in Iraq, the last US soldiers got flown out of Iraq in August of this year. As stated in the video "We have people doing this in real life" Actually we don't, unless of course you meant we have people shooting weapons in real life. Then yes, there are in fact people shooting weapons in real life.
-At the end of the video the white man (I'm not familiar with his name) stated "I don't know anything about Grand Auto 57". Now the latest installment of Grand Theft Auto was the fourth so that was obviously using a brand name as an example, but more importantly by him stating he didn't know anything about grand theft auto would imply he DOES know something about the call of duty series.
-The second half of their discussion seemed more based on the content matter than Kobe Bryant's appearance in the advertisement. I realize ESPN only covered this because Kobe Bryant is a sports player, but they gave no allusion to last years Call of Duty in which you had the option of shooting civilians.
-Finally, at the end of the video it was stated that 'this ad might scare Kobe Bryant's fans away'. To be frank that's beyond unlikely. It was stated that the game has sold 6 million copies thus far. Chances are, a large number of people that like Kobe Bryant, like video games. And chances are that if you like video games you like Call of Duty.

This whole discussion was absolutely ridiculous and had no one to back Kobe's appearance throughout the entire thing.
