"Multiplayer - Free With Call OF Duty: Black Ops"

NowGamer explores the implications of Activision making Black Ops the last free multiplayer element in the Call Of Duty series. With Battlefield now offering a Free To Play model, what's stopping Bobby Kotick from making CoD a similar paid-for service?

"The potential answer is actually all around us today. Imagine, if you will, a Call of Duty title that follows a similar format to EA’s Need For Speed World; a free to play MMO that lets players rank up to a certain point absolutely free of charge. Then say that you’re having an absolute blast shooting other players, engaging in witty banter with your mates over chat and levelling up your perks but then suddenly, Activision plays its ace."

I'll never touch another CoD again if they so much as charge me a penny to play multiplayer in an FPS game.

Imperator4906d ago

That would be bad, especially for 360 gamers who are already getting ripped off by MS with Live. Well, they do like to pay for stuff that is literally FREE on every other medium.

AAACE54906d ago

I laughed when I first saw that on the bottom of the screen when I first played the game! I guess that was their big F'you to those who thought they would charge for multiplayer!

I don't care either way, but it was just funny to me!

ddelella4906d ago

This model would easily halt sales in there tracks. Yes there would be idiots out there who would pay $10 to get a higher rank. Then there are the smart ones who would just switch to a better game which is free like Halo. Halo has less hackers, less glitches, a better party system, more dynamic playlists, etc. The reason people like COD is the pace of play, unique game types not offered in other games, and the multitude of weapons and attachements. Too bad Bungie didn't pick up the attachment idea. Activision is probably just putting these ideas out there to gain feedback. They have a history of ruining franchises so I would not be suprised to see them run the COD name into the ground.

PyReX-4906d ago

You still have to pay $50 a year to play so its not free anyway.

Truth4906d ago

If this ever happened, I would say that desperate times called for desperate measures at that point. Gamers would need to rise up, storm Activision, nail Bobby Kotick to a cross and drag him through the streets so all developers and CEO's of these companies could see what happens when you **** with your lifeblood. Us gamers. /s

But no really. I'd at least $h!t in his cornflakes.

Bnet3434906d ago

Gamers would stand up, but people who have money won't give a toss. If you a rich superstar, you'll buy everything.

sketch4906d ago (Edited 4906d ago )

I thought the "Multiplayer: Free with every copy" statement was a potshot at EA for charging to play online with used copies of their games where online is free with CoD regardless if the game was new or used.

Forbidden_Darkness4906d ago

That's what i was thinking too lol

But if Black Ops is the last free online game, then it'll be my last Call of Duty game. That would be sad, because i dont want to be playing Black Ops forever. We'll just have to see if Activision is dumb enough.

MGRogue20174906d ago (Edited 4906d ago )

Having to pay moolah to play future CoD game's Multiplayer = Not buying future CoD games anymore.

That's how nearly all CoD gamers feel right now.. Nobody likes paying for something that they already get for free.

Convas4906d ago

Well, I only have Black Ops, so if they start charging to play the next COD, I'll drop it like it's hot too. XD

Look, to be honest the FTC should just stop.

MS has A/B and nothing has really changed yet...if you are worried about 5-10 years from now...just drop it cause the future is unpredictable.

Take this week's news, that 4 Xbox exclusive are going Multiplatform.

Yeah man I think Microsoft here getting to probe is kinda wrong unless you only have accessed to necessary information not complete access imo.

Abriael72d ago

Obviously they aren't giving them the password to Sony's computers and telling them "help yourself."

Eonjay71d ago

"Microsoft allowed to probe Sony and Ubisoft"

Sounds hot...

ApocalypseShadow72d ago (Edited 72d ago )

Maybe Microsoft should also talk and get help from their "congressional influencers" at The Capital. They had plenty to say on the matter before the acquisition. They are mighty quiet after the purchase went through. Almost as if they had a stake in the matter.

Abriael72d ago

Could you perhaps explain how this is related? I'm honestly curious since you seem to bring it up rather often.

S2Killinit71d ago

He is pointing out how corrupt MS is, and how money talks. I think.

KwietStorm_BLM71d ago

I would say read between the lines but it's pretty damn clear as it is.

Bathyj71d ago

You should be careful upsetting Sony too much Microsoft.
You might need them to sell your subpar games soon.

TornRaptor71d ago

The games will become the best things ever all of a sudden.

Bathyj71d ago

Yeah I really doubt that.
I'm struggling to think of one I really cared about missing.

Hofstaderman71d ago

Bwhahahaha. Ain't that the truth.

Mr_cheese71d ago

The only exclusive im personally interested in from Microsoft is Elderscrolls and that's not even got s release date.

Everything else is genuinely of none interest.

OtterX71d ago

Microsoft never waits for the probing to be consensual.

derek71d ago

This isn't a major victory. They're essentially being allowed to call witnesses in regards to agreements they reached with Sony and Ubisoft which was initially blocked because Microsoft didn't make the request through the proper channels. This case is dead, there is no way the ftc will be allowed to unwind this acquisition.

Sephiroushin71d ago

they probably know case is death but want some proof to sue them for a few millions regarding other stuff, the ftc loves to sue everyone, be sure that as soon as all this end they will just go sue MS and end in a settlement.
