Top Ten RPGs Of This Generation... So Far

Gaming Union writes: "This console generation has seen a remarkable shift in what it means to be a role-playing game. Elements that have traditionally been exclusive to RPGs - such as leveling / upgrading characters and equipment, branching, non-linear plots, and collectible items - have begun to be incorporated in numerous other genres, blurring the lines between them. However, the core RPG genre remains intact, featuring a wide variety of the best Western and Eastern game designers have to offer. This is Gaming Union's top ten RPGs of this console generation (roughly 2005 to present)."

I have to say this is a very good list, all the games i've played on this list were top notch

4986d ago
Chubear4986d ago

Ah FO3, it should be about $20bucks now right. I've heard such great things about it so I hope I'll enjoy it before the onslaught of games come in this Fall.

Is there Goty edition or something for FO3?

GWAVE4986d ago

This is a pretty good list, but keep in mind that there are a ton of great RPGs on the handhelds and on PC, too.

DORMIN4986d ago

Valkyria Chronicles is still my fav RPG this gen. VERY happy to see it on the list!

Can't wait for VC2 and the VC3 announcement. XD

Perjoss4986d ago

Don't like the way they have Mass Effect 2 there but Mass Effect 1 only makes it into the honorable mentions. The first Mass Effect is more of an RPG than 2, 2 focuses much more on combat and has much less RPG elements.

DasBunker4986d ago

lol glad to see people agreed with my "c" comment.. i was gonna edit it but i forgot :P

im gonna try demons souls soon... people positive comments are overwhelming.. i dont have many games that im looking forward this year anyway

JDouglasGU4986d ago

@ GWAVE: the list does include some games on PC, PSP, and DS. the console generation is more of a time reference.

Myze4986d ago

@Perjoss

It's kind of a tricky thing. ME1 is definitely more of an RPG, but ME2 IS still an RPG, and to me (and the majority of people) it is still a better game, even if the RPG elements aren't as common. Then again, RPG is not a clearly defined genre, either.

Overall, great list, but also shows that this generation, so far, does not come close to measuring up to past generations in terms of RPGs. I'm not saying some of the games don't measure up, but in the past, I could make a top 50 list with quality RPGs, easily.

jeseth4986d ago

That game was magic. Arguably the most underated game this gen.

ChineseDemocracy4986d ago

Solid list, played and loved every single one of those titles.

darkcharizard4986d ago

And if you consider that last gen,

Metal Gear Solid 4 or Super Mario Galaxy 2

Kingdom Come4986d ago

My Opinion, I won't disagree with others...

jalen2474986d ago

Easily GOW III
Kratos rules them all

dragon824986d ago (Edited 4986d ago )

I can't decide so I will give my top 5:

Fallout 3
Heavenly Sword
Heavy Rain
inFamous
LittleBigPlanet

flyingmunky4985d ago

Demon's Souls

That game more than any other reminds me of old school gaming. Amazing sense of atmosphere, nothing else really like it this generation.

Imperator4986d ago

If you have a 360 and are interested in JRPGS, there's no better choice than Lost Odyssey. IMO, it's miles better than FFXIII. Such a great game. Probably one of my favorite 360 games.

mrcash4986d ago

I was hoping for a sequel but I doubt we'll see one.

Umbrella Corp4986d ago

Im with you guys LO was a master piece.Turn based system and amazing graphics with he creator of the original Final Fantasy. The story was so touching and Jansen hahaha that mofo was funny.

heroprotagonist4986d ago

Lost Odyssey is awesome. It's underrated in my opinion. I agree with what I heard in some article that everybody judged earlier RPGs harsher because they all assumed Final Fantasy XIII would come along and blow all those games away. Now that FFXIII has turned out to be below expectations I realize even more how awesome Lost Odyssey is.

Jamegohanssj54986d ago

Demon Souls and Oblivion. The End.

TGSI

Kingdom Come4986d ago (Edited 4986d ago )

Double post curtosy of my iPhone :/

Kingdom Come4986d ago

What does this TGSI stand for? I've been meaning to ask for months...

ReservoirDog3164986d ago

Haha, I asked that before. It means:

The Genius Said It.

callahan094986d ago

It's a pretty good list. My only changes would be: Dragon Quest IX should be on the list, not the honorable mentions, so I would switch its spot with Crisis Core, and Eternal Sonata shouldn't even be an honorable mention (didn't like it at all), and Disgaea 3 should be there on the honorable mentions in its place.

Pika-pie4986d ago

Demon Souls is good but its a little too hardcore for my tastes. I have a busy life and I like to enjoy my games on an evening and its just not fun at times having to consult a guide every step of the way because its to easy to die or miss something important. If the enemies didnt respawn when you died I would probably like it 100times more. Still, I shall stick at it for now.

Glad to see Oblivion and FFXIII on that list. When are they going to announce an Elders Scrolls V!!!

meganick4986d ago

I liked every pick on the list except Final Fantasy 13, which I thought was a major letdown.

Scrooge4985d ago

ME1 had more detailed character stats to upgrade than ME2. Is that all a game needs in order to have "more RPG elements"? I think it's a weak argument. Upgradable character stats were present in ME2 just not as detailed, everything else was better in ME2.

I like Demon's Souls, it's really hard. I put like 100 hours into Oblivion. I think it's about time I picked up Lost Oddyssee, but there's too many others I need to play and not enough time. I'm yet to finish GOW3 for crying out loud!

mephman4986d ago

Some quality games in there, one for every different type of RPG fan.

JDouglasGU4986d ago

RPGs have really diversified over the years, it's a great thing to see.

RedPawn4986d ago

Great List, but out of PERSONAL TASTE, I would of put DQIX in the place of Fallout 3.

darthdevidem014986d ago

I agree Fallout 3 was disappointing after Oblivion!

Coramoor_4986d ago

Fallout 3 had it's problems but in comparison to oblivion it was far better, oblivion just lost me after a while, altohugh i did enjoy what i played of it immensely up to a point

Redempteur4986d ago

fallout 3 was disapointing after ..Fallout 1 or 2...

fallout is not bad but it's oblivion with another skin ..while i'd want ...well fallout ...

jaosobno4986d ago

Demon's souls, my favorite RPG of all time.

On the other hand, FF 13 belongs on "The Worst" lists, not "Best". They should have put Mass Effect 1 instead of FF 13.

What Made Fallout 3 One Hell of a Game?

Bethesda's post-apocalyptic RPG remains an unabashed classic, more than a decade and a half on from its launch.

For me its the fact that I could put hundreds of hours into it and still find areas I missed in my earlier runs. It was also my first FO and despite what I had to put up with at times such as overall crashs and killing my orginal PS3 with the YLOD it's still my favorite entry to this day.

-Foxtrot2d ago

Tons of reasons

But my silly little one…hunting for unique weapons and armour

Something Fallout 4 just didn’t really have as much because they replaced most of it with randomly generated customised weapons. Even Elder Scrolla doesn't do it as well.

Yui_Suzumiya1d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

I remember during my first playthrough of Fallout 4 back in 2015 I somehow got an automatic combat rifle that shot explosive rounds by defeating a legendary creature. Unfortunately that was the only playthrough I ever got that weapon. It's a shame because it was absolutely epic!

Vits1d 18h ago

Sense of exploration. That was why older Bethesda games were so good. They might have had glitches, broken mechanics, meh visuals, etc., but they were some of the best around when it came down to the sense of exploration. You could go wherever you wanted and you would find something cool; it might have been a faction, a weapon, an enemy and much more. And that is what they are lacking now. Skyrim still had a lot of that, but Fallout 4 dropped it by focusing on an interconnected world and more randomly generated rewards. Fallout 76 just kept that trend and added multiplayer, and Starfield went even further in killing it by creating a whole universe with parts completely isolated from each other.

EazyC1d 16h ago

I think the retrospective of Fallout: New Vegas' existence has somewhat diminished the view of Fallout 3 in the eyes of many, but it getting out of the vault in Fallout 3 was, for me, the most remarkable experience I've had in a videogame.

I was 12 when it came out, and I remember I just saw the score it got in Gamemaster magazine (remember those!? 😅), and I just went to the shop and bought it with my pocket money.

Not knowing anything about the game, I thought the whole thing was going to be about growing up in a vault, especially given that I'd spent about 2 hours in it....I literally could.not.believe it when you got out and it was just this wasteland on every direction. Amazing.

Tody_ZA1d 16h ago (Edited 1d 16h ago )

Probably because these Bethesda games were hand crafted so that exploration meant something. Unlike Starfield where this sense of exploration is replaced with the illusion of scope and procedurally generated worlds. A player can always appreciate when they wonder into an unforgettable new encounter by accident or stumble across a new questline that becomes their favourite. Just like a player can always tell when they're ploughing through filler on auto pilot, that they'll forget the moment some resource numbers go up and nothing worth remembering occurred.

I mean, in Fallout 3 you could nuke an entire town as a SIDE QUEST. In The Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Skyrim, the Dark Brotherhood questlines were my favourite in any RPGs and you could completely avoid them if you didn't care for them. In The Witcher 3 side quests take you on ridiculously dark and mysterious storylines that are some of the best I've played in RPG history. There's a reason why people still talk about KOTOR to this day. Difference between a developer creating something or just padding a game world with stuff.

Fist4achin1d 11h ago

There were some side quests that could yld have been developed into an entirely separate game. Some great writing there.

The best PS5 exclusives 2024

With so many PS5 exclusives to choose from, it can be a little overwhelming to pick which one to play. This is especially true for a new PlayStation gamer who has yet to experience the wonder of PlayStation-exclusive storytelling. So, here's KnowTechie's take on the best PS5 exclusives in 2024 and beyond

PlayStation is killing it with the exclusives this year. Exclusive wise, what has xbox released this year?

VersusDMC8d ago

They won't complain about Microsoft not releasing games here but put all their effort into saying that only first party counts. Games like Rebirth and Grandblue Relink don't count. Games published by Sony like Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin don't count because Sony don't own the studios.

It's some narrative building so for when Hellblade 2 come out they can say, seemingly without shame, that Microsoft is actually releasing first party games this year. And claim victory.🙃

Chevalier8d ago

Weird 1st party games didn't matter when Xbox had so little, but, now they're important again? Guess Ark 3, Stalker 2 don't count any more?

KyRo8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

ARK 3 doesn't exist and it's just a timed exclusive. It's also a game that a majority of the ARK player base doesn't want as it's a massive deviation from what people like about the original game

Abnor_Mal8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

Honestly to me it doesn’t matter what they say, they are just finally getting a chance to say all the things PS fan(boy)s were saying to them for the past few years. Let them get that, they deserve a “win” for a change.

The new narrative is that suddenly first party games matter again when awhile ago they didn’t, but that was because they were struggling with the same three games with the occasional fourth or fifth. That games should be everywhere on all platforms since that’s whats happening to theirs. The consoles don’t matter just the ability to play anywhere. Whatever Xbox is doing Sony will soon follow.

They’re not moving the goalpost anymore, but rather just moving the whole damn stadium.

jwillj2k48d ago

Only a incel would care about who published what and who owns who.

If it’s not on the other consoles it’s an exclusive.

Killing what? Where are the 1st party games??
Stellar Blade and FF7 is what I’m seeing this year.. so shallow!!!!

andy858d ago

Doesn't really matter as long as they're great games. Baffles me why people put an emphasis on 1st party. They're still games you can't play anywhere else this year

Cacabunga8d ago

Andy

PS brand is my favorite because of their stellar first party software.. currently I see absolutely nothing to go crazy for..

CS77d ago

Nonsense.

PS1 and PS2 was built on great third party exclusives like FF, MGS, GTA & Tekken.

RonnySins8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

Killing it my a$$! The 1st party is still MIA and no... Remakes and remasters don't count.

andy858d ago

I mean they literally do count. Imagine saying FF7 Rebirth doesn't count 😂

Tody_ZA8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

@Andy85 Don't forget the remakes for Demon's Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, two of the best PlayStation games around!

And beyond PlayStation, what about Resident Evil 2 and 4? RonnySins wins the award for dumbest opinion!

raWfodog8d ago

Of course I love the games I’ve played from PS but I don’t believe we need to limit it to ‘exclusive’ to acknowledge that Xbox will be releasing some good games this year also. In that same vein, I believe that Xbox diehards shouldn’t limit their acknowledgment of good PS games to 1st party. There are plenty of good games to go around for everybody.

Tacoboto8d ago

This is a Playstation article about Playstation games and your comment is about Xbox. Can't you just celebrate what PS has without dragging this into console war BS?

ChasterMies8d ago

I don’t think Microsoft is releasing games exclusively on Xbox anymore. They have some timed exclusives that release on Xbox first.

Returnal, Astro Bot, and Ratchet made having it since day one worth it.

GT7 free updates and Spiderman 2 and others at 60fps have made this last year more than okay.

But yeah, it’s been dry lately. BG3 and third party have made great filler, but we ready for that SOCOM or Killzone announcement and some more 1st party goodness. Crossing fingers for Ghost of Tsushima 2 announcement this summer.

Didn’t know Helldivers was exclusive! Wtf is going on at Xbox that they can’t get these games, series s strikes again.

SonyStyled8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

Sony owns the Helldivers IP. The first was a PS3/Vita/PC game. It was never an Xbox game that they could ‘get’ a decade ago. I’m not sure what the upset is with Xbox here

CS77d ago

Lol, how do you ignore Rebirth one of the best games ever made?

anast8d ago

Looks like they are on par with the previous gens. Solid games all around. Interestingly enough, we can't say they released a bad game yet this gen. Unlike the Quiet Man dustup.

I actually do not mind if Marathon releases on multiple platforms . I just wish that Marathon has a dedicated single player campaign.

Helldivers 2 is exactly what gaming needed. I’m loving it.

Fallout Anthology Edition Looks Pretty S.P.E.C.I.A.L.

The Fallout Anthology Edition is coming to PC very soon, and is packaged with some very S.P.E.C.I.A.L. bonuses.

-Foxtrot10d ago

It’s an awful downgrade to the last one they did

They included physical disc back then

Forgot I ordered this until I got the dispatch email.
