Hands-on with PlayStation 3D: Gimmick or game-changer?

Chris Jager of GGG writes: "Last week, we checked out Sony's first batch of 3D games for the PlayStation 3 — namely, Wipeout HD, Super Stardust HD, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift and Pain.

With oversized 3D glasses perched atop our noses, we ran through each game in their 2D and 3D iterations. We also roped one of our non-gaming pals into the office to give us a “man-on-the-street” perspective.

Read on to find out how each game played...

3D is an absolute gimmick! Plus the games the PS3 is debuting with are absolute rubbish.

grumpysmurf5012d ago

I wouldn't call Super Stardust, Wipeout or Motorstorm 2 rubbish, but the 3D does seem to be a bit underwhelming.

Johnny_Bravo5012d ago

Gimmick, no one wants to sit there playing a game for hours wearing a pair of glasses if they don't need to. Until they lose the glasses, its nothing but a gimmick.

Lou-Cipher5012d ago (Edited 5012d ago )

How long do you think you can play any Kinect game? You know, those games that require you to constantly stand up and wave your hands/arms/torso/legs/@ss around like a wild monkey.

Comfort is extremly valuable when it comes to playing Video Games, and if 3D becomes uncomfotable, then just turn it back to normal mode, but when Kinect becomes uncomfotable you just have to deal with something you want no part of anymore. The Eye toy failed because of that reason, and that is why Kinect is going to fail shortly after it launches.

I think 3D adds value to PS3 games. I wont be using 3D mode that much, but when I want it, it will be nice to have it.

In 3 to 4 years you wont be able to buy non 3D TV, so I see no reason not to add it for the people that want it.

@NecrumSlavery
MotorStorm is what impressed me with 3D, but as a big MotorStorm fan who likes to play for hours at a time, I dont know how long my poor eyes can handle it.

Im buying a 3D tv in November for GT5, but I dont see myself having a 20+ hour 3D gaming session.

NecrumSlavery5012d ago

I admit I am not fan of the glasses, but they don't bother me at all. However I got to demo 3D games at Brst Buy and I have to say WOW! 3D is not a gimmick at all, it may be early in it's lifespan(current 3D tech I mean) but it looks to improve. The depth was amazing, but during motor storm, all that crap flying in you face like dirt and tree branches kept making me flinch. That's immersive as hell, and I can't wait to play Killzone 3 in 3D. It's really impressive.

Venatus-Deus5012d ago (Edited 5012d ago )

A 3D TV is just a TV and in 12 months all new TV’s will have 3D as standard. In 2 years the prices will be the same. At that point it’s just another optional or feature.

3 years ago I paid £1100 for a new 42in Samsung. You can now buy a much better 42in for less than £500.

It’s that same as CD’s, DVD’s and Blurays. History just repeats itself yet half the comments still think the whole of the electronics industry is just going to drop 3D because they feel it’s a gimmick.

LoVeRSaMa5012d ago

I have tried it myself at a Beta event, its like nothing I have tried before, makes games harder because your natural reactions hinder you.

Its bad but in a good way, I will be 3D gaming thats for sure.

Anon19745012d ago

Right from the article.

"Our verdict? Believe it or not, this latest craze to hit the gaming arena is more than just a gimmick."

So, let's see. We've got hoards of fanboys who've never played a 3d game in their lives claiming it's a gimmick and a site that's played all the current crop of 3D games saying it's not a gimmick, that it's completely worthwhile.

Who to believe?

ji32005012d ago

IN THEATER 3D MOVIES, THEY SET THE DEPTH ONLY 15 PERCENT BUT AT HOME WITH 3D TV YOU CAN SET IT LOT HIGHER AND THATS GONNA MAKE REAL ENVIROMENT THAN THEATER 3D. PEOPLE WHO WATCHED 3D AVATAR IN THEATER YOU GUYS ARE MISSING OUT WHAT REAL FIELD OF DEPTH IS!!!!!!!!!! NEXTAG.COM SELLS 46INCH SAMSUNG 3D TV FOR LESS THAN 1500 DOLLAR!!! WHO SAID 3D TV IS EXPENSIVE????????!!!!!!!!!!!

3D is just corporations attempting to remove more money from your wallet on crap you don't need, and isn't that great. Sure 3D is all the rage that the hype machines can mustar, but in the end it will fail just like it has repeatedly in the past.

milohighclub5012d ago

your opinion only counts if you've tried it

divideby05012d ago

didnt we hear the same with BlueRay...yawn..

I really do not think many here have ever been to a 3D movie based upon some comments.

saying 3D line is unimpressive (and I tend to agree). what can you possible say for the Kinet. lineup....lmao.. talk about underwhelming

milohighclub5012d ago (Edited 5012d ago )

how would you know you've never played ps3 3d....

@Johnny_Bravo

you forget your wearing glasses, especially when you see how awesome it is having bits of rock and sparks flying in your face.

treylathikes5012d ago

As a non-glasses wearer in general, i can't see myself being able to enjoy a game while wearing a pair of those oversized abominations. I guess it might be cool for a quick burst of gaming, but that's about it. I'll wait till we can view 3D without the glasses.

BeaArthur5012d ago

Same here, call me when you don't have to wear the stupid glasses.

Wh15ky5012d ago (Edited 5012d ago )

I don't really see a problem with the glasses. I enjoy wearing polarised sunglasses when fishing and normal sunglasses when on holiday etc.

The more I think about wearing shutter glasses to play a game the more I like the idea, it may help to submerge you in the gaming experience even more and completely shut out everything else round about you.

I have tried Panasonics and Samsungs glasses, Samsungs were very comfortable but Panasonics felt a bit heavy across the bridge of my nose.

The Great Melon5012d ago (Edited 5012d ago )

Well as a glasses wearer I don't mind having two pair on if they fit well together. The glasses are not an issue to me as I have lived my whole life looking through lenses. Whether 3D is autosteroscopic or glasses based it makes no difference - I still wear glasses to see both.

Penno5012d ago

So what's the deal with Xbox 360? Are they doing a 3D firmware update too? Or does this stuff only work for Blu-ray?

Pandamobile5012d ago

It has nothing to do with Bluray. Some games are shipping with 3D on the 360, just like the PS3.

Penno5012d ago

Yeah, but the PS3 received a specific firmware update to make it work in 3D. To my knowledge, the Xbox 360 hasn't.

Also, MS isn't really saying much about 3D or releasing any Xbox Live 3D downloads.

OSU_Gamer5012d ago

Maybe that's a smart idea...they are letting Sony test the waters.

Microsoft Xbox 3605012d ago

The 360 can't do the 3D standards of today. The HDMI port on the 360 is primitive.

JustTheFactsMr5012d ago

It's not Blu-ray. It's HDMI.

Millions of 360's with component only can't participate at all. All PS3's can.

The rest of the 360's with HDMI 1.2 will be shut out of the stereoscopic 3D based on the HDMI 1.4 3D standard now appearing in the 3D TV's from Panasonic, Sony, Samsung etc.

That's why the PS3 had a free 3D firmware update and the 360 didn't. It's now part of the PS3 OS and integrates with the HDMI 1.4 protocols. The 360 never will. So no point in a 3D update to the firmware.

The 360 can only support a 3D game with custom support for every 3D TV on the market being added to every game since they don't support the HDMI 1.4 protocols. And every publisher will have to do that work on their own.

Also the lack of bandwidth of HDMI 1.2 further restricts the options even in that already restricted subset of 3D options. For example the PS3 can support pushing more pixels because it doesn't have the bandwidth limitations of HDMI 1.2 on the 360. The 360 pipe is too small to push the same amount of pixels as a pipe with twice the bandwidth found on the PS3.

So Pandamobiles "just like the PS3" comment isn't quite accurate.

The PS3 already has and will have a broader catalogue of game titles available in 3D.

And obviously the 360 doesn't do Blu-ray so PS3 will also support 3D 1080p movies.

Penno5012d ago

"And obviously the 360 doesn't do Blu-ray so PS3 will also support 3D 1080p movies."

Are you sure about that? The linked article claims that you still need a seperate 3D Blu-ray player to watch 3D movies.

coolfool5012d ago

That's because the 3D firmware update so far has only been for games. Sony is releasing another update later in the year that will allow the PS3 to support 3d movies as well.

The Great Melon5012d ago (Edited 5012d ago )

The Xbox 360 can theoretically do 3D also, but the bandwidth of the HDMI that the 360 uses is about half that of the PS3. So say there is a game that both the PS3 and 360 can render at 720p at 30 fps (for each eye). Now the PS3 can shove all that information to the TV, but the 360 can only do about half that even if it is capable of rendering the graphics. I don't actually know the real cut off limits (it's probably higher than 720p at 30 fps for each eye), but if the PS3 was pushing its HDMI bandwidth then the 360 can only do half of that.

grumpysmurf5012d ago

So to recap, Motorstorm looks cool but suffers from wonky wheels, Stardust is pretty but shallow, Wipeout is worse in 3D and PAIN is PAIN (i.e. - lame). Doesn't sound too great to be honest.

Hopefully the next batch of games will offer something better.

T9X695012d ago

I enjoyed PAIN thank you very much.

JustTheFactsMr5012d ago

Here is the more accurate recap for those that didn't actually read the article.

"Our verdict? Believe it or not, this latest craze to hit the gaming arena is more than just a gimmick. No, really.
While there are a few kinks that need ironing out, the extra layer of immersion that 3D provides is impossible to deny."

"we were acutely aware of the added depth the game throws at you. Trees and grass whip by in an alarmingly authentic manner, while the 3D crash cinematics are truly a sight to behold. "

"Well, after clocking on some quality time with Super Stardust HD in 3D, we can confidently attest to its brilliance."

"That said, PAIN is definitely more fun in 3D"

Wipeout was the only one they had trouble with due to it's warp speed gameplay.

milohighclub5012d ago

stardust and wipeout are the best out of the lot motorstorm has loads of ghosting and pain is shit

Wizziokid5012d ago

Not a game-changer yet, be a nice experience though but it will loose it's appeal imo.

Good to see sony pushing the tech though.

Sony Patents To Prevent You From In-Game Harassment By Reading Your Emotions

A new patent recently published by Sony wants to gather biometric data of gamers to track whether one is being harassed using AI tools.

Profchaos13h ago(Edited 13h ago)

I hope this is one of those patents that never comes to fruition.

I already dislike the fact you can pay a significant amount for a online service buy associated games and content on said service and get banned from that service over potentially a misunderstanding the bans are already handed out for flimsy reasons

I'd rather see money invested in a ban that simply removes the offensive players ability to communicate with unknown players allow them to continue party chats with friends but not with Joe blow on cod.

exputers9h ago

Agreed. Blizzard recently banned a college Overwatch 2 player who's dependent for saying "shit." Pretty harsh.

z2g5h ago

Take my social security and bank account numbers too! Here’s a picture of my wife and our address.

phoenixwing5h ago

Cmon where's the pictures of your children. Don't hold out on them.

H95h ago

At this rate I feel Sony will eventually sell a room to play games in it where they can monitor your every breath

jambola1h ago

I genuinely get a bit worried sometimes when a friend says something that could be offensive In a party
Because I have no trouble believing some bans would happen when in a private party for saying something wrong

SegaSaturn6694h ago

I want them to censor erotic content by measuring my groin temperature so i dont get too distracted while playing black ops 2.

Popsicle4h ago

Terrible idea. Not only do I not consent to providing my biometric data, the potential for mishandling biometric data is almost a certainty. Positive stress and negative stress can produce similar changes in biometrics. Interpreting the precise emotion a person is feeling is not only invasive but could be easily misconstrued. I hope this never comes to fruition.

Sony Could Increase Your Game's Difficulty If It Sees You Complain About It

Sony has recently published a new patent that wants to dynamically handle the games' difficulty and gameplay based on the player's emotions.

jznrpg21h ago

This is something I might use. Sometimes I play some good games but they don’t have difficulty option and are a little too easy.

Profchaos20h ago

Souls games will be like that players struggling make it harder

PassNextquestion19h ago(Edited 19h ago)

I think if used correctly it could work well

cool idea
cool idea for horror games especially
the way it's explained here sounds like it could never be forced hopefully, so that's ok with me

Sony Taps Bungie's Head of Revenue to Lead Live-Service Games

Please do not put Destiny’s monetization into Sony’s first party games. The monetization is what’s driving players away from Destiny.

just_looken21d ago

The new temp boss is the sony cfo bean counter so i can see this being a thing get every penny.

Cacabunga21d ago

PlayStation officially losing it.. fans will never support gaas games

just_looken20d ago

@car

The new boss did a interview in japan he wants to tap into the mobile market like nintendio so he give 0 fucks about gamers/fans

https://www.pushsquare.com/...

Redemption-6420d ago

@Cacabunga
You only speak for you and those who think like you, but most fans will support what they want. Playstation and PC fans are literally supporting Helldivers 2 and that is a gaas. Maybe you wouldn't, but many more would if they like it.

Huey_My_D_Long20d ago

@Redemption-64
Look, Im not making any judgement calls about this guy, but I will say that Helldivers 2 GaaS model is unique to Helldivers, and legit the only other game I can think of thats similiar was the Avengers game except HD2 pass is still better.
The fact that you can earn in game currency in a way that doesnt make you feel like you have to grind forever, as well you being able work on that pass that you bought...on your own time without a time limit...that right there is fucking huge to me, and I can't name any game other than avengers that avoided trapping players with FOMO logic...I think GaaS on HD2 shouldn't be compared to the rest of the industry...it should be copied.

Einhander197220d ago

Cacabunga

Helldivers 2...

Redemption-64

In Europe it's a 60 40 split favoring PC.
In the US its a 60 40 split favoring PS5.

So PlayStation owners supported the game just fine, it's not getting carried by PC or anything like that.

FinalFantasyFanatic20d ago

@just_looken,
I'm perfectly fine with the way Nintendo entered the mobile market, I never touched their mobile games, meanwhile, the console/handheld stayed the way it is. As for being a bean counter, he's probably going to reel in these massive budgets that Sony's studios have had lately, I haven't played Spiderman 2, but I cannot see how they almost tripled the budget for that game.

@Redemption-64,
That's an exception to the rule, I'm expecting a lot of these GAAS games from Sony to fail, to be fair, they only need a few to succeed, but I would have preferred that they put more of their resources into other types of games.

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 20d ago
DivineHand12520d ago

True their monetization is driving players away and at the same time, their decision to chop out content and convoluted systems is keeping new players away from the game.

Joe91320d ago

I don't think that will happen based on how things worked out at Naughty Dog now that we know what we do, seems they had the option to fully commit to live service games or stay making single player experences so they gave up on their live service game. We are not sure how things came about with Bend making a live service game but I hope that was not a forced situation. Sony doesnt seem like they are forcing studios to switch up but we will see, Sony's bread and butter is single player games it is how they dominated the console market.

Obscure_Observer20d ago

Yeah, I though Sony learned something from all their failures in the LS segment under Bungie´s disastrous leadership and supervision which led to games been cancelled, studios closed and all the people laid off.

Looks like Bungie still plays a major role in Sony´s LS initiative and Sony is not backtracking on their GaaS plans.

S2Killinit20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Are we forgetting that Destiny is also a highly successful franchise? I feel like that definitely deserves mention here.

Besides, there is no reason why a person cant learn from past experiences.

Joe91320d ago

I agree, people act as if Destiny flopped when it came out lol it took 9 to 10 years for the numbers to fall yet people are still playing it add the success of Helldivers 2 no wonder Sony is going forward down this path.

S2Killinit20d ago

Personally, I see no problem with Sony also having service games as long as they make good ones, and more importantly they deliver the AAA story driven games that they are known for. So yeah, I agree 100% with you.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 20d ago
Christopher21d ago

I mean, this person made some pretty bad decisions at Bungie. I hope they've learned from them because I definitely don't see those type of ideas as good for PlaySation in general.

CrimsonWing6920d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Honestly, what’s to learn from? How to make people happily continuously dump money into a single game over its life-time? Buy season passes continuously for several years with a smile on our faces?

GaaS is a design decision that is everything wrong with this industry. The fact that Helldivers 2 did so well and people defend the monetization because it was $40 and is a fun game, scares the sh*t out of me to see that the door is open and all shift will probably be to replicate that in future games. We already know the ROI for traditional game dev cost isn’t doing it for them.

I thought with Jimbo leaving we’d see a change for the better… I’m not so sure now.

S2Killinit20d ago

Service games are being offered by everyone. Sony cannot afford to only create single player AAA games. No one can. They already said they will be doing both.

Abnor_Mal21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

Ps5 gamers in 2023 seemed to play more live service types of games, so regardless to how people feel about them, numbers don’t lie and Sony is going where the money is. I mean look at the excitement around Helldivers2, people are showing that they want live service games.

Christopher21d ago

They play long-time existing live service games like CoD, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and the like. Mass majority of new live service games are considered failures and aren't moving gamers away from older games.

just_looken21d ago

Yep the huge issue with live service is they need paid players along with a reason to play them.

You forgot mobile market that also taps into that player base as well as the eve online style games there is only a certain amount of krakens/whales blind supporters compared to the amount of live service games we have its not sustainable math wise.

700 restaurants making food for every seat for 1000-3000 eaters just does not work out

Einhander197220d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Christopher

I am not a big live service fan and literally own zero of the games you listed, but that is not true, unless you call games that aren't the top games to be failures.

There are tons of live service games that are profitable.

Games don't have to be the biggest game ever they just need to make more than they cost.

I challenge you to show professionally prepared data that shows that more live service games fail than make enough to keep going.

Because all the data that I have seen shows that live service is less of a gamble than making a big AAA budget game which needs to survive off retail sales.

FinalFantasyFanatic20d ago

I sometimes wonder if we're at saturation point, where it's hard for a new game to join those ranks unless it's particularly exceptional, people only have so much time and money to devote to these types of games.

romulus2320d ago

Correction, they have no issue playing good live service games

shinoff218320d ago

Lol it's not even a quarter of the ps5s sold. Helldivers may have been a hit but let's not say most are enjoying it because truth is most(the real most ) don't care about it.

S2Killinit20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

I play what is fun. If a live service game is good I’ll play it as long as its not a money scheme which Helldivers is not.

And Im a single player gamer.

mastershredder21d ago

How do you kill a franchise that already been killed?
Destiny’s grind, cash-in-on-playbass-cha-Ching, and pop-culture-insertion mainstream-me-too bs totally killed any rep Bungie had. Sony/Bungie, if you are doing this to ward-off players, it’s already working.
