Motorstorm Apocalypse is the Uncharted 2 of driving games

Dualshockers: I recently got to play a pre-alpha version of Motorstorm Apocalypse at the Sony Beta Rooms event in the UK. I was amazed at how cinematic and full of action packed events that the game is and the immediate comparison that sprung to my mind while playing was that it reminded me of Uncharted 2, specifically how the scripted events blended seamlessly with the actual gameplay to create a new level of immersion. Check out the video footage below to see what I mean and hear my thoughts on the game as I play.

the uncharted 2 eh... interesting statement

Games4M - Rob5015d ago

Just to clarify before i start getting lynched by people ranting that Gran Turismo is the king of driving games then thats not what im talking about. Im talking about the cinematic nature of it which makes you feel like a small part of a very big world that is happening around you.

Hitman07695015d ago

I played this at PAX East 2010 in 3D HD and it was awesome!!!

hi25015d ago

much like split second?or a lot different?

Games4M - Rob5015d ago

I couldnt tell you mate as i havent played Split Second. All i can say is that it plays like the other Motorstorm games so if you have ever played one of those then you can expect more of the same from the core driving.

Its really the enviromental stuff that sets this game apart, its like rally driving pushed into a new dimesnsion :)

Why o why5014d ago (Edited 5014d ago )

*loosens rope*

thats ok then

Noobasaurus_REX5014d ago

Do the graphics look better than M:PF? because I wasnt really able to tell from trailers (not trolling)

Greywulf5014d ago (Edited 5014d ago )

Just watch the video of the game. If you think they just remade split second... well... The scale/action/gameplay is all different.
not sure what to say..

And Games4m:

Apparently there is a war going on -- on the island. Which is why the damage/chaos is random or something. Those little people you kept hitting were fighting against the other people there.

Next time u play use the cockpit/hood view!

jack_burt0n5014d ago

what was the beep about? good vid mate.

Games4M - Rob5014d ago (Edited 5014d ago )

Yeah i get that there is some kind of conflict going on i just wasnt sure if that was what had caused all the destruction in the first place or if people were now fighting to survive over whats left of the resources after some other catastrophe.

in some of the scenes where you drive through the tunnels you can actually see in the video gangs of people shooting at each other, Im betting there will probably be a trophy releating to killing X amount of gang dudes or something.

@Jack Burton - it was just a mistake mate. I got a bit giddy and named a game as being one of the 3D titles when it wasnt so i thought it best to bleep it out to prevent confusion.

ExplosionSauce5014d ago

I think MotorStorm Apocalypse was in development before Split Second. Before they even finished Pacific Rift.

Though that's besides the point. What I mean to say is that it isn't too much like Split Second. It plays a lot like MotorStorm usually does actually.
Split Second has structures falling while in MotorStorm entire cities are collapsing, changing paths throughout the race.

Sev5014d ago

@Hitman0769

You are mistaken. Motorstorm wasn't at PAX East 2010. It wasn't even announced at that point. Nor was there a patch for 3D gaming on the PS3.

Was it some other industry event.

aGameDeveloper5014d ago (Edited 5014d ago )

I wonder how epic or interesting it's going to seem the 20th time you play through a level?

I'm not downplaying how awesome it might be, just pointing out that the destruction is almost certainly canned and might get old after a while.

ExplosionSauce5014d ago

Why disagree with my previous post? I was only pointing something out.

Anyways, MS:A will be pretty fun to play :)

Incognegro5014d ago

If I recall correctly...from what I read, when you play through the campaign mode, you'll play as 3 different people. When each person views one level that one of the other 2 or both had played at previously, the amount of destruction will vary. Basically speaking, you can play that same level for the first time when it's just completely decimated, but then later down the road, you can play as one of the other 2 when all of that destruction occurred previously.

As far as the multiplayer aspect, I don't recall them saying too much about it, but if i had to guess... locally, you could designate how much of the game's destruction will occur during the match, probably directly related to the levels seen from the 3 perspectives in the campaign, or there could be even more that they haven't exactly spoken about. There could also be an option where the destruction is just random and it would be near impossible to predict what would happen throughout the race. <- This much is pure speculation, so don't quote me on that.

hakis865014d ago

I'd say it's what Split/secound should have been

evrfighter5014d ago

ummm?

does your car jump off ledges hundreds of feet off the ground and does it have a cover system?

I barley see any turns if any at all. Looks like hes driving straight with slight wheel turn every so often I HOPE this isnt sign of things to come.

Other than that looks amazing

vsr5014d ago

GT5 = God of war of driving games(Large Scale)
Motorstorm = uncharted 2 of driving games.

finally PLAYSTATION & gamers won

MaxOpower5014d ago

In That Dualshock Video. He stars Talking about games he played in 3D.

He mentions Killzone 3, GT5. But the first game gets beeped out.

And I'm willing to bet 10000000000000000000 internet dollars, that what he meant to say was Hervey rain. You can clearly hear "H".

Denethor_II5014d ago

Yeah he does say Heavy Rain, you can read his lips

Nicaragua5014d ago

He has already said in a comment above that what he said was a mistake which was why he bleeped it out, so it dosnt matter what he said.

gamerzBEreal175014d ago (Edited 5014d ago )

Not really kinda obvious big set pieces exsplosions fast paced gameplay alot happening at one time both do this but as of good game wise i think uncharted2 a 96 online shooter with a great story is out of a arcade racers leauge just IMHO tho

Bloodraid5014d ago

"Not really kinda obvious big set pieces exsplosions fast paced gameplay alot happening at one time both do this"

That's all the guy was saying... Cinematic wise, it's on the level of Uncharted 2.

Stuart57565013d ago

This looks really, really good! From the video I've just seen the title of the vid is not an understatement. Those falling buildings and the floors collapsing, simply looks brilliant, Moterstorm is a good racer but add thos elements! Sony FTW

Pre-Alpha?!

EDIT: Thanks Rob. Just re-watched. Impressive. I bet this looks amazing in 3D.

Games4M - Rob5015d ago

Yup, look in the top right corner of the screen.

Narutone665014d ago

happy when you got first place in the race and when you looked at the leader board, you sound so disappointed that you didn't get no.1.

Poseidon5015d ago

that means only one thing...DAY 1.

GeoramA5015d ago

Awesome video.

This and Killzone 3 makes me want a 3DTV so bad.

GamerSciz5014d ago

Don't forget GT5 in 3D. If done right I bet that game will look amazing. I am already saving up for a 3D tv for GT5 on Nov 2.

JoelT5015d ago

i would call that a bold statement. But after playing it for myself and with 3d i sa that sounds just about right.

Baltis5015d ago

It's almost as if every Sony developer says this absurd tag line just to get hype and excitement for their game. It's like if they say this then people will buy it. Sad, really. But, with that said, I do love the Motor Storm franchise and will buy this one even though I don't agree with it's location much. I was hoping for something else. Then again, these guys had me hooked with MSPR so I'm not going to doubt them here.

RememberThe3575014d ago (Edited 5014d ago )

The author said that not the dev...

Edit: I'm actually interested in what you would have rather seen from MotorStorm, I think this setting looks amazing. I've never been a fan of MotorStorm but I'm really interested in this game.

Eidt2: Shit not bubbles...

t0n3y5014d ago

As already mentioned this is the author's comments. Plus having just come back from the Playstation Beta event the new Motor Storm is stunning (however GT5 just edged it for me).

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro45d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv7245d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_45d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga45d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos45d ago (Edited 45d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt2345d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball200046d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin46d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole46d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix46d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel198945d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor46d ago (Edited 46d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

Michiel198945d ago

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

Revisiting PS3 classic Motorstorm - The driving celebration that should never have ended

Digital Foundry : Evolution Studios' Motorstorm is one of the first, finest and most fondly remembered of launch titles for PlayStation 3. It's a release designed to answer the question posed by each new console generation: what makes a game 'next-gen'? With its robust physics engine and massive tracks, Motorstorm serves up a bold affirmative answer to this question, delivering an experience that could never have existed on prior console hardware. At the same time, the path to release was fraught with challenges that almost serve as a microcosm of the PlayStation 3 release situation itself. It was a success, however, with a trilogy of PS3 releases, plus PSP, Vita and even PS2 off-shoots.

After Driveclub and Onrush, the dev team will now contribute to and assist with the development of the upcoming NFS.

darthv72703d ago

I would give anything to have a full compilation of the series remastered to play on PS5 with full DS support. Feeling the deformation of the tracks as you race in pacific rift or the snow laden tracks in arctic edge... that would be sweet.

MastaMold703d ago (Edited 703d ago )

Yes MotorStorm World Tour for PS5 damn it Sony make it. The Desert, Pacific Islands, The Arctic and City races.

Army_of_Darkness703d ago

Motorstorm Pacific rift was awesome! I think MotorStorm: Apocalypse was what killed the franchise due to its change of direction...

darthv72703d ago

Pacific rift is the best (IMO) but apocalypse wasnt what killed it. At least it was still somewhat of a MS game. The RC one is really a departure from the norm. None of which were bad as they were all fun in their own ways.

Army_of_Darkness703d ago

Lol! I completely forgot about the RC version.

Knushwood Butt703d ago (Edited 703d ago )

RC was a blast to play on Vita.

Apocalypse had unfortunate timing due to the 3/11 earthquake in Japan. I never got around to playing that one.

Evolution had some harsh experiences. I had Driveclub from launch and the server issues weren't that bad and certainly didn't prevent you from enjoying the game.

ABizzel1703d ago

Agree Apocalypse didn't kill it, it's just racing games in general just became less popular nearing the end of the PS360 generation as it was flooded with medicore racers and the extremely niche but enjoyable ones like Motorstorm, Blur, Spilt Second, and Forza Horizon (still going strong, but actual sales have been decent fro a racer, and often expanded by console bundles and now GamePass)

But since the PS4/XBO generation had a lack of arcade racers, it's a prime time for games like this to come back.

I've said for the longest, the additional income of PS+ Premium should be used for, Remastering, Remaking, or recreating sequels / spinoffs of classic PS franchises to launch into the service. Many PS3 games fit this mold of looking good enough that a quick remaster to 4K@60 with better texture maps would give them near PS4 quality.

Remasters: A game like Motorstorm look good enough where it can simply be remastered in 4K @ 60fps, and have better textures for mud, mountains/rock structures, and vehicles and it would hold up WELL.

Remakes: Games like Legend of Dragoon, Warhawk (could be a simple remaster also), and so many others could get remakes like FF7.

Recreates: Shorter sequels/prequels/spin-offs to other classic PS IPs like how Infamous First Light / Blood Festival (BF was a highly underrated vampire game) and Uncharted Lost Legacy. Give spin-offs to things like Heavenly Sword, The Order 1886 (1786 or 1986), Puppeteer, Tokyo Jungle, and more.

ABizzel1703d ago (Edited 703d ago )

This is also why Sone NEEDS to get PS3 emulation up and running. It gets rid of all the PS3 server farms and replaces it with software that can work on EVERY future PS console with updated coding.

At bare minimum emulation could double the resolution and framerates of all PS3 games making many of them 1440p@60fps without any real work, and a few 4k@60fps.

As for full-on remakes again updating to 4K@60fps with completely revamped textures, and an option for 1440p@60fps with global illumination can make these games shine with a new lease on life.

Also I'm still waiting on my DriveClub 1440p@60fps update 😭

ChiefofLoliPolice703d ago

Apocalypse was actually pretty good i don't think that's what killed the series. PR was the best though.

I was late to PS3 and Pacific Rift was the first game I picked up on it... huge miss to not have one on PS4, hope it gets some love on PS5 (as well as Ridge Racer and Wipeout).

akurtz703d ago

Only driving game i enjoyed.

darkrider703d ago

Really cool franchise. It's shame it ended

RosweeSon703d ago

Never really got into it myself I remember getting it with ps3 and being a bit underwhelmed I preferred the RC version they did for vita 🙌🏻🤣

EvertonFC703d ago

Going from ps2 to ps3 was not underwhelming when I first played motorstorm, it was like nothing we'd ever seen before ?

RosweeSon703d ago (Edited 703d ago )

Each to their own didn’t like it myself. 🤷🏻‍♂️✌🏻 ;I didn’t say going from ps2/3 was underwhelming just the launch game motorstorm, bit different but hey ho.

PS3 was a slow burner for me it’s my least favourite Sony console, maybe as I had my 360 as my main at that point but yeah wasn’t impressed with first couple of years to be honest but that’s just me. Once uncharted MGS4 GT5 Last of us GTA4/5 dropped sure but launch games weren’t all that imo. Resistance was alright wasn’t as big a change as ps4 or even now ps5 for me. PS3 took out rumble and basically went HD it’s wasn’t exactly a revolutionary start. 🤷🏻‍♂️✌🏻 ;

MotorStorm - 15 Years as PlayStation's Finest Arcade Racer

MotorStorm debuted on PlayStation 3 15 years ago today (in Europe), and remains one of the format's best alternative racing games.

wolf581753d ago (Edited 753d ago )

Ahhh motorstorm....i still have the reveal trailer back in my mind from e3 2006 or 5 i think...ps3 never manage to par the gameplay trailer back then but the game especially the first one for me was AWESOME....I m sure that ps5 is capable to give us now this kind of fidelity....for me motorstorm and daytona usa 2 in arcades still is my favorites arcade racer ever....

nevin1753d ago

Pacific Rift still looks good graphically speaking.

I also thought Artic Edge(PSP) was solid.

franwex753d ago

I own the game on PS3, but I still play the demo to this day.

Fishy Fingers753d ago

Bought the 60gb PS3 with motorstorm and my first 720p/1080i TV on the release day, great memories. Oh the mud!

Real shame this franchise fell by the wayside. With todays tech it would/could be such a great open world arcade racer.

darthv72753d ago

I got the 80gb Motorstorm bundle. Still have it. I still play Apocalypse on my 3D display.

Newmanator753d ago

The wet mud effects used to tickle my pickle for sure.

Chaos_Order753d ago (Edited 753d ago )

The first Motorstorm was good, but Pacific Rift blew it out of the water IMO. Still one of my favourite arcade racing games of all time. I also really liked Apocalypse, despite the Supercars and Superbikes being OP compared with the other vehicle classes.

Father__Merrin753d ago

Mororatoem 1 was excellent the visuals and everything had a really good vibe about it. If they remade that with a festival type open world... If only
