Kevin Durawa: Game reviews still matter

Video game reviews still matter. And they apparently help sell games as well. This week a study was released from the Electronic Entertainment Design and Research group and Southern Methodist University Guildhall proving this point.

the guy who keeps sending me the "crackdown 71 meta haha" messages can stop because i don't give a sh*t, i bought the game and LOVE it. reviews obviously don't matter to me, oddly the only games i've ever returned were the "AAA" ones that got over inflated scores.

schlanz5035d ago

I don't typically trust a single review for any game. But when a game has 50 reviews and the average is a 7, thats plenty of information for me. I'm not saying those 7 games can't be a good time, but there are far too many 8.5+ games these days for me to have any interest in something that 9/10 people felt was mediocre.

I don't think there is anything at all wrong with trusting the wisdom of crowds when it comes to entertainment. Reviews simply cut the wheat from the chaff. It sucks for the developers of these games that get average reviews, but hell, you made an average game. There are no excuses and no reason why anyone should feel bad for not buying anything but the best.

someone needs to look at the stories from last week when it talked about this and they even talked about it on G4tv i have seen this story 3 or 4 times on this site now

SactoGamer5035d ago

I guess when it's three or four times by three or four different outlets, it's different. How many 'top 10' lists do you see on this site, after all?

hatchimatchi5035d ago (Edited 5035d ago )

Yea, they talked about this on the gamescoop podcast.

Reviews shouldn't matter to people who game on a regular basis. I've played so many games that when a game is extremely mediocre I can still find it to be worth playing if the story is somewhat interesting. I.e. Lair, Alone in the Dark, Clive Barker's Jericho, etc.

Plus, some reviews are just downright garbage and go to the extremes. Like Ryan Clements & his review of White Knight Chronicles or Eric Brudvig & his review of Deadly Premonition. I've had more fun playing Deadly Premonition than I have any other game all year.

all the games in the above list are bang on. this is the only reason we need backwards compatibility and physical presense of games for the upcoming future, no matter what.

Honorable mention to the excellent Driveclub, one of the best racing games of all-time and one of my favourite games ever.

melons61d ago

yes! incredible rain effects; so good to drive along in rain with your Spotify playlist blaring

Skuletor61d ago

I really wanted a MotorStorm using the same engine, Driveclub is easily one of the best looking games on PS4 and I'm surprised they didn't even give it a PS4 Pro patch.

ravens5260d ago

Yes indeed. May just install it on my PS5. You know, physical copy and all.

monkey60260d ago

I adored Driveclub and the Bike expansion. I also loved Motorstorm. Evolution shutting down was a crime

Outrun Online Arcade, Sega Rally Online Arcade, After Burner Climax... all good stuff. I keep my 360 hooked up to play these as well as the TMNT games that were also delisted.

Skuletor61d ago

I have quite a few of these. Timed licenses suck.

Terry_B60d ago (Edited 60d ago )

wow...I have all of them except the Nintendo ones either in physical or digital version.

Also..Deadpool the Game is missing on that list.
