This is frightening for the 360 with Kinect actually, I never thought about this until now. I remember a UK Watchdog program investigating Microsoft for the 360 scratching discs and it found that the cause was from vibrations, possibly people jumping, or even walking near your xbox if you have a slightly damaged floor.

These Kinect games are all about movement, lots of jumping, stamping and running. I would bet that there are going to be loads of reports of scratched discs as a result of Kinect even with this new redesign. This is a serious disaster in the making for Microsoft here. Infact, I challenge one of you bloggers out there to make an article on this because it'd be a very valid important read.

This was a stupid thing to do and it was done purposely. Why would someone do that? If you nudged the 360 slightly and it ate your disc I would understand and blame MS but how can you blame MS when you purposely TILT the damn console?

I mean, it's on a disc tray, what do you think will happen?

Anyways, the disc tray should have been ditched, but why anyone would do this is beyond me. I suspect a desperate attempts at hits and trying to cause controversy all over again.

No way that's unreasonable. Unreasonable would be shaking it or dropping it on the ground. The guy just tilted it. Again, other disc readers just don't have this problem.

On the whole I don't think it will blow up into a huge issue anyway, but it is a blatant design oversight. I'm sure people will disregard the warning and then find their discs shredded.

It's like how with most digital audio players (ie iPods), if you just yank out the USB without safely removing it from the taskbar it's generally fine even if you're not supposed to. Whereas with a few players from certain manufacturers there's a chance you'll fry the device. That's kind of like the 360 now.

If you take it downstairs you will most likely switch it off because I doubt you have a long enough power cable or a small enough house to move it around rooms without unplugging it.

In which case the disks won't be damaged because its not spinning while your moving it.

Not a big issue but who knows the other problems may still be there (overheating)

I said it here before and I'll say it again. This tech has been mastered for so long, you would have to go out of your way to find a DVD drive that scratches disks!

I've moved a regular Xbox before while the disk was in and that didn't happen.

I've had this happen to me once before, and that was with a PS2, but only when it was literally dropped at high velocity because my nephew got his foot wrapped in the cord. This guy barely tilted the damn thing.

This is clearly no mere oversight, the thing has a warning printed on it, they knew this was going to happen and didn't do anything about it.

Actually this happened only on Xbox as I recall. Did similar things with DC, GC, PS1(though those two hold disks firmly, no tray), PS2, PS3 PC and some DVD player, no problems.

My Falcon Xbox did similar thing to my GTA: Episodes From Liberty City, though the damage wasn't as serious as this.

thantos the scratching is caused by the design of disc drives

in short you have an outer casing and attached to that is the interface board, the hardware chips of the drive,

built on top of that over a layer of thin shielding is the mechanical parts

consisting of the head with the laser and the drive bay and spindle

when a disc is loaded the spindle rises and lifts it clear of the disc tray so the laser on its track and read the disc.

the head of the laser is only a few microns above the disc surface on a thin cushion of air.
if the disc is jostled without shock proof tech, the read head/laser remains high and the spindle bounces the disc shattering the air cushion and leading the hard glass lens to gouge the softer plastic of the disc

btw shockporoofing basically adds a sensor to tell when its not level it lowers the head so it cant hit the disc.

What type of moron would actually move any disc player while it is running. Most optical drives with disk trays will do this when they are flipped while the disk is spinning. The drive is using simple magnetics to hold the disk down.

As usual though, the local PS3 crew shows the tenatious desire the hate and jumps all over this. I haven't seen one of you blame the idiot the flipped the console while the disk was spinning. Why not you ask? Because that would mean you wouldn't be able to blame MS.

Moving a console like this when its loading a disc must happen all over the world all of the time, it's a very easy thing to do while putting something on a table or pushing in a cable etc.

Microsoft MUST know it does this otherwise there would be no sticker.

My kids have knocked their wii over and bashed it a lot and never a problem, hell when my youngest put coins in the disc slot and it ate Zelda, Nintendo sent them a brand new disc.

he didn't flip it upside down, look again. he moved to to be in the vertical position, 90 degrees right. to stand up and have the disk tray at the top, just like in all the pictures. All systems I've seen other than xbox 360 don't have stickers saying don't move while disk is playing. ps3, pc drives, there's no stickers like that.

i work in the computer industry and haven't seen a dvd/cd tray drive that couldn't be moved while spinning for years! I've moved my pc around while playing disks, on either side, upside down, right side up, no scratching, no gravel sound.

Yes flipping a running console is not among the brightest of things to do. But why is it that it's only the Xbox that seems to have this issue? My laptops don't have this problem. My in-car DVD/CD players don't have this problem, and I like to take corners as fast as possible, and speed bumps are merely an easier means of getting airbourne :) My daughters $20 boom box can be carried around without problems. Cheap CD "walkman" type devices don't have this problem.

It's probably because MS included the cheapest possibly DVD drive which doesn't even secure discs in place to prevent things like this happening, i mean it's a DVD drive, how cheap do they need it to be? i'm sure if they spent another 20 cents per drive they could of gotten one that secured the disc in place....

Now, most people don't move their console when playing. There is typically not much point in so doing. However, my tenant and I have both accidentally bumped his 360 while playing and it is in an entertainment center. It scratched his copy of Halo 3 pretty bad.

Interestingly, my 60 gig 360 CAN BE MOVED while playing a game and it doesn't have this problem. Weird. Anyway, it really is just too bad. My Wii doesn't do this and neither does my PS3.

A "stand-up" design for a disc tray makes it more feasible to lose balance when moved. Many homes here in Hong Kong are small and they usually put their consoles below their TV's or even under an open desks. Heck my friends 360 just fell over simply because someone pulled a power cord accidentally.

Imagine that scenario with THIS updated console... that's another good game down the toilet. What if this game was rare or difficult to import? I don't mind losing my console but games are a totally different story.

As a designer, you must ALWAYS try to test different scenarios and accidents to ensure stability within your product. There is no defending this... the lack of quality control shows - a "do-away" with the tray is A MUST feature. Better yet, the default stand design should be horizontal and not vertical. It's NOT a bloody PC!

My pc with a disc drive tray doesn't even have this problem...Ive tilted it SEVERAL times as I had a crappy video cable/video card connection problem for quite a while. I used to tilt my pc every day to unplug replug, unplug, replug...lol. weird. I heard its because they save .03 cents (really .03 cents per box) by omitting the rubber grommet that surrounds the read laser...bummer.

if it scratches that bad then Vibration alone can probably cause some big damage over time and also means that you cant go from the horizontal to the vertical standing xbox while it's playing at all which some people might not realize when they buy this xbox without any kind of BIG warning label. They're not scratch proof, as I've seen them scratched up at my local Movie Trading Company, and they become useless if they are actually scratched. They're scratch resilient, and they have to be due to this fact.

The Xbox 360 is running a DVD in a disc tray with a 12x drive constantly spinning. If anything, this sort of thing is bound to happen with most products that use a tray, and most of them tell you not to move it while a disc is being read.

The disc got scratched when he began to tilt it upright, something I do with my PS3 while the game is on all the time. It's not like there were any forceful or violent movements in this video, he was simply moving it upright, in a tame way. So to answer your question this most certainly would not and does not happen on the PS3, nor SHOULD it on the 360.

Honestly in this day and age, to have a disc tray/hardware that will instantly destroy your expensive games upon any movement of the system is unacceptable, why would anyone defend this, it's not in your best interest, as a consumer, to tell MS you're ok with it, when we all know this is completely preventable. In any of my systems, once the game is running, I don't touch them, I'm not like "Oh, this would look so much better with my system standing straight up." Really? I didn't lower my standards. I didn't have to. This actually is a complete non-issue for me. I've never had a ring happen to any of my games, and except one Rock Band 2 disk I was silly enough to let someone borrow, none of my games have any scratches at all. For all of my systems, I just take the game out before I move it. I keep them on a steady surface. and I don't let other people touch them. & nothing bad happens to my games. I'm especially careful with the Wii and 360 since they're still using DVDs, but even my PS3 I'm paranoid with. I just hatehatehatehatehate scratches on my games.

Keep your wired controllers out of the way, keep your 360 on a hard, solid surface above the floor, make sure it's laying flat and is even, and for the love of goodness, don't let anyone touch it other than you.

Temporarily, I'll have to relocate my 360 downstairs from time to time to let other people watch my netflix with me and be sociable, and my power cord needs to go where they walk, so I remind them every time they get up to not trip and to watch out. I normally don't have a game in my disc tray at that point though, so it's not that huge of an issue.

You can slap a warning sticker on anything and say don't do this or that, but does that remove liability or blame for when something does happen? I don't think so.

Consoles are small pieces of equipment that tend to be moved, bumped, and generally messed around with, and for someone like you to say that it's ok for a shoddy disc tray to be used in a seemingly high-end system and that we should keep our mouths shut about it...that's wrong, and I say NO to you.

This is an old issue that needs to be addressed. It's obviously a very very simple fix and Microsoft has chosen instead to slap a warning sticker on the disc drive instead of actually addressing it. They could probably save money on ink and stickers if they fixed the problem with a tiny piece of soft rubber or felt or something.

GOW3: Big scratch, and the game no longer loads, but it is TOTALLY not as bad as the disk in the video. MS sucks.

UC2: Only a smaller scratch. NO performance issues with the disk.

LBP: NO scratch!!!

It's the same as the old 360s. Just don't run the game while you move your console. Hell, I always take mine out before I move my 360 at all. I like having my discs in perfect condition, so I take precautions.... that take two seconds. Not a big deal. Just don't be stupid.

And obviously moving it from laying flat to standing up, and then basically almost dropping it back down is going to scratch the disc.

I would cry foul, but taking the game out before moving it is just so completely easy that it's not a big deal, especially when i take uber care to do that with any of my consoles anyways.

Actually, most devices come with a little pad that secures the disc in place to prevent this from happening. MS, however, being cheap, refuses to add this 25 cent little device in the console, therefore inferior hardware that destroys discs.

Try moving a PS3, PC, or DVD player around while there's a disc in motion in there. Will anything happen? Most likely not. Move the 360 around. Will anything happen? For sure.

If you do move your pc or DVD player. It will scratch your disk. Try opening you DVD drive in a pc. There is no little pad to protect you DVD. I've had many pc games scratch where as I had to go out and buy a new one. Lucky for me they are games that are like $20 and are old games. Same with a DVD movie player. Other than the ps3 and blu-ray players. Many disk drive don't have disk loading slots.

My second aka last xbox 360 I had, scratched my discs violently and I never moved my console. That thick scratch you see on Alan Wake it did to a lot of my games. It rendered my Oblivion useless....to this day I haven't completed the game... After my 360 RRoD I decided to stop supporting Microsoft's console altogether because it became expensive having to replace the system and the games it would scratch. My Gamerscore is stuck at 20K+. :\

My Launch 60GB PS3 never has caused me such grief.

My ps3 can play games upside down and I can twirl it and carry it with disc intact. Shyt happens and sometimes you need to move your system while playing or a freak accident and it knocks down can destroy your disk in a hearbeat when using disk trays. I thought MS would have went the PS3/Wii route.

the regular 360's do this too. i was playing guitar hero(and my 360 was vertical) when i went to go back to my "playing spot" with the guitar on me, and when i turned the neck hit the 360 and knocked it to about 45 degrees(it hit the side of the unit iot was placed in). i heard a scraping sound and was like, "this just f*cked up my game, didn't it?". i took out the disk and low and behold, a ring was etched into the bottom of the disk. i always put my consoles horizontal now lol

I've destroyed Rock Band 2 this way.

When I just got the game and popped it in for the first time. Decided to move the box from its vertical position to horizontal as to not block our screen. Heard a terrible scraping sound the moment I turned the box. D'oh! I knew it would do that, why the hell did I move the box!

I was fortunate that my 360's never damaged any discs but I've had times when my PS3 has been bumped or pushed off the side by the kids and no damage to discs.

STOP SAYING ANYTHING WILL DO THIS. Have you guys EVER played on a Wii or PS3? I took my Wii one day, put Super Smash Bros Brawl in it, and shook and tilted it back and forth. I did the same with Uncharted 2 with my PS3. With the Wii, there was some SLIGHT sounds, but when I took the disk out, it was fine. The PS3 on the other hand, was completely silent, took the disk out, it was fine.

So, okay, when the PS3 was in rough shape near the beginning in terms of few worthwhile games and overpriced hardware, the 360 fanboys (note fanboys, not owners in general), bashed it for being a piece of crap. I'll admit I was one of them, but I think all foolishness and harshness aside, we kind of had a point.

PS3 fanboys (again, not users in general) had a great time with RRoD as their revenge. The problem has subsided, although not completely solved, so yes, we get it! They made huge design problems the first time around. Xbots deserved the hit back as well.

Fast forward. Now, I only own a PS3, and it is an outstanding purchase. I am very excited to buy a new 360 as well because of the motherboard redesign, and their greater care in the overall design quality of the console (so far). As said, the tray design they chose is the same as before (it doesn't lock the disc in place, like MANY other drives out there. NOT an Xbox exclusive thing). Maybe not the best decision, but it hardly makes it a bad, or even questionable purchase. Just don't tilt the thing. It's the consumers fault if they are uneducated about a product, and it clearly warns you. It is the manufacturers responsibility to appraise you, the consumer, of device operation (which they clearly have with a sticker on front). It is the consumer's responsibility to read and understand these notices. You're not allowed to plead ignorance because you're a lazy fuck, and who thinks that they're entitled to something.

What I'm trying to say is, the PS3 fanboys have officially sunk even lower than I could have imagined (Xbots are still out there though, don't get me wrong). We can have "fun" with obvious drawbacks to a system, but this is just nitpicky and sad. Every 1 in 100,000 consoles will have some sort of rare defect that will cause an error in some ways. You can not make a judgement off of one or even a few cases when there have been millions of Xbox consoles sold. You appear to have had just plain unluckiness in this matter.

was played upside down by people because many were FAULTY and could only be played upside down. I recall the PS2 having disc read errors also. AGAIN, every console has had it's faults.

PSone - had to be played upside down because of a faulty drive in quite a few units.

PS2 - SOME units experienced more disc read errors than usual.

Original Xbox (2001) - had a problem where the Thompson drive in the first models would have difficulty reading games made after a certain date (likely an updated specification it was not fully compatible with).

Xbox 360 - X-Clamp problem causing RRoD. Was incredibly rampant when coupled with the inefficient chipsets of the earliest models. It has improved, but the X-Clamp flaw remained (until now, hopefully).

PS3 - Relatively normal failure rate with YLoD, most commonly caused by a faulty power supply I believe. A large number of users experience console bricks when the firmware is updated (YLoD). There is also a largER number of people that are usually okay update to update.

PS3 (Slim) - Seems okay so far for the most part.

360 (Slim) - We will have to see. Early impressions say that the build quality is exceptional in comparison to its predecessor*.

*the disc scratching is NOT a flaw because this warning accompanies all forms of electronics with a disc drive. Check your PS3 manual if you don't believe me. Just because that it may be more likely doesn't make it broken, there is a WARNING. Also, don't move the damn thing while you're playing a game.

There are more ways to move a console while disk is spinning then picking it up and moving it.

Regardless, it's early, that video could have been staged and he seemed to have dropped the console a little hard ( although the nuclear explosion sound of disk destroying disaster occurs before the drop ). If this problem is as wide spread as the RROD Microsoft is in deep trouble.

Also to the people saying there's a sticker there that says not to move it then I guess the following stickers should be applied in plain sight to all other electronics such as.

-PS1 Do not play games for years because you will have to play it upside down

-PS2 Do not play games period because it will disk read error eventually

-PS3 Do not play Dvd's and Blu ray constantly because occassionaly it won't play them anymore
- Do not plug into wall because some power supplies are faulty and will YLOD your PS3

Xbox360- Do not play games for more than a couple of hours because your system will RROD

Wii Remote - Do not use without strap otherwise you can damage your TV

Ive juggled my 360, PS3, wii and 4 chainsaws. All running with disc in tray, (except chainsaws) and guess what got scratched? My dumbass for using devices improperly. NOTE: This did not really occur, just proving a point.

No it won't ... i just turned my ps3 upside down with MW2 in the drive ... not a peep ...This issue got resolved in the early 2000's with all disc drives ... MS just doesn't want to spend the 0.22 cent that it cost, to buy the magnet that holds the disc in place ..

Give it up people! FFS, so the new 360 scratched a disc when he moved it as it was spinning. The current 360 does this and no one cares as everyone who has a 360 isn't dumb enough to move their console like that. Who moves it like that when they're playing anyway? So MS didn't get rid of this problem - what does it matter to you PS3 fanboys anyway? You're NOT going to buy one so drop it. Considering they're trying to appeal to a wider (and younger) audience with things like Kinect....surely this is BAD?? I mean if someone buys the new X-Box and Kinect for their six year old when it comes out and the console is moved a bit and it scratches the disc to buggery there are gonna be major tantrums!

The best part of it is this is E3..we had real news about the console..even had over 200 replies in few of em'..but they barely could gain any degrees or reach the top of the page..

This one..closing in on 480 replies..7 pages..over 1010 degrees and counting..still remaining entrenched at the top of the front page..why? Because just like the infamous article that described the 'worst'..the proof is right here for all to see

Even better is watching the 'actual' that interestingly enough is not embedded (because they don't want you to see it) and the INSTRUCTIONS on the front of the 360 tell him not to move the console while a disc is running..the rep is even screaming..'nooooo don't do that'..he did it anyway..and it worked as advertised..this translates as RROD coverage for the usual suspects..

I had to look back 40 pages on N4G.com of Xbox coverage to find any E3 article that had 1000 degrees and was not negative blogger articles

At the beginning when the rumore design leak was shown

'Is this the Xbox 360 redesign? had 303 replies..but only 1020 degrees..

'Kinect-This is how not to do it Sony' only had 140 replies..but shot to 1060 degrees

'Sony has an Open Net-Kinect fails to impress' had a measly 83 replies but shot straight to 1200 degress???'

We have all kinds of warnings in the many instruction booklets that come from the technical gizmos in our house and most of those warnings can be understood with common sense really.

This warning that is written on the side of your new x360 really actually is something we need to pay extra attention to? Why you ask? Does the moving interfere with the loading and force you to boot your console all over again loosing all unsaved progress with the game you ask? No. It completely destroys your game disc forcing you to buy another one. What's that? You say it's severe? Why? It says not to do it on the side of the machine not to move it. Can't you read?.........-_-

I can't imagine the media meltdown if a Playstation did this...

Please people (x360 fanboys). This is ridiculous to say the least. This is something we are not used to. There are no similar hazards in any other tech gizmo in my house atleast. Please do tell if you know some other device with similar hazards. I'm all ears.

the fat ps2 scratched them if u dropped console on the floor.

now it doenst seem as a prob but customers who r to cheap to get a warranty for their game and get a console scratch are a$$ed out when it comes to replacing their fav COD game or halo or some other game they spent 60 on.

First of all, what kind of stupid a$$ moron moves an Xbox 360 when it is on and loading a disk? Obviously people are that stupid to do so, in the instruction manual of any type of electronic device, it says specifically DO NOT move while device is powered up and operational. It says it in my stereo receiver and other manuals I have at home. Kind of reminds me of the little gel packs they put in boxed when they ship, and it says DO NOT EAT. They put that there cause some idiot tried to eat that crap.
