Splinter Cell Conviction producer: "PS3 can't handle AI nearly as well as the 360"

A developer from Ubisoft, you know, the same people that said Naruto for the 360 can only be done on the 360, have let another one loose. However this time, the wii gets a piece of the action.

In a recent interview with Gameplayer.com.au, Splinter Cell Conviction producer and technical director Dany Lepage had this to say.

"It's NEVER gonna come out on the PS3 or the Wii." It's a logical decision. Nintendo's console simply doesn't have the graphical horsepower, and he candidly told Gameplayer.com.au how the PS3 can't handle AI nearly as well as the 360.

C'mon, you have to watch a long video of an artist to finally hear him say "the village he is showing is so “DETAILED” no other platform could handle it, yes not even the PS3 or the Wii."
The game is a cartoon!!! There's no fight animation. If you talk to someone, you get a buble with a pictogram, and there's at one point you see a whooping 4 people on screen. 3 of them are standing still!

Sorry, but large world or not, this can easily be done on a Wii, but worst, it look like it can be done on any previous gen consoles!!!!

The XBOX 360 CPU is superior when it comes to AI, the Cell is superior when it comes to physics. This has been known for a while. The new Splinter Cell seems to place more emphasis on AI - it is part of the game play. Therefore, you cannot do it on either Wii or the PS3. However, throw it on a PC and it would be easy. Just goes to show that MIPS does not give the whole story - anyone who thinks otherwise is just swallowing hype.

If they were talking about games like Crysis, it was a bit acceptable that "they" couldn't get their complex code into the machine (But maybe someone else could). Even BioShock is acceptable thought PS3 seems well capable of both. When developer of two games that have gotten really bad buzz till now (SC5 got really bad reactions from Ubi days and many called its graphics Xbox1 looking. Naruto ROTN was totally ignored during E3).

The only real big and complex game coming from Ubisoft is Assassin's Creed and if a game that big, complicated and ambitious is coming to PS3, then these nagging devs are just really lazy or really dumb (Or both).

what has failed to be said is that AI is actual code written by the developer. it has nothing to do with the system. i mean, how many games come out for the pc that you have played and some have horrible AI and some don't. pc is the same "platform" accross the board. the only difference is the software that is written for it.

to say that the ps3 or wii can't handle certain GFX or AI just means that they won't code it or they don't know how to. there is an obvious lack of talent then if that quote is actually true.

Your are pretty much right on the money however, there are certain aspects to the hardware that allow a more direct way of coding specific AI codes. Such as collision detection, depending on the SDK (I have not seen Sony's) they may have easier ways of doing this sort of code such as through an API call, this in turn will allow more efficient coding which is something Ubisoft and EA love! (Less time, more money) However, the easier way is not always the best. I have always believed and seen (in my programming experience) that the harder it is, the better it CAN be. If you have very simple SDK's (Microsoft's XNA framework) yes, you can develop a game fairly quickly and easy however I can assure you it won't be able to do amazing animation, etc that looks anywhere near the ps3.

Ubisoft Montreal seem to have AI down extremely well on the PS3 in Assassins Creed! Crowd Reactions such as looking up at Altair hanging off of a wall or either helping or impeding Altair's escape. If the PS3 can do that, it would certainly be able to do SC!

is doing tech training for other studios on the topic of cell programming. I'd say, these guys are pretty good at it. One tutorial even describes how to stream code ("code is just data") to use more the 256KB code for the spus. (So, for these guys already dropping out at this line - yeah for you the 3fix me is the right choice).
The point is, the SPUs are very powerful if you care to take the time to figure out how to use them. However, in todays world, it everybody can do a "CreateThread()" but has some trouble to post process opcode and write a code streaming and scheduler runtime environment to max out the spus. Later by next year, the PS3 will blow away the 360 when middleware will become available, which does volumetric lightning, fogging, clouds and what not. I am taking the bet. Ratchet and Clank Pixar style gfx, KZ2 DX10 equivalent rendering, and MGS4 ? Should I add more ? (Lair full 1080p rendering, and thousands of objects).

All we have seen is that its powerful to do FOLDING and powerful to be used in other areas OTHER than gaming...

The 360's GPU and CPU are ideal for gaming and what we are seeing on the 360 ARE games not shoddy ports from other consoles or excuses from developers on what they cant do but what they CAN DO.

The PS3 has nothing at this time to prove it needs the space or power to be able to run any game.

And if some of you think Resistance is a prime example of what the PS3 can do then I am shocked as its the most pathetic and absolute rubbish of a game I have ever seen.
It incorporates terrible voicing, music, and mix of location of WW2 with aliens. The plot is stupid as is the way the game plays.

Anyone with an understanding of shooting games will know coming from either a PC or Xbox background that Resistance is one of the worst put together shooting games ever.

On a visual standard its terrible, lacking textures and lighting and just looks plain and solid.

However a PS gamer oh wait no not PS Gamer I mean a PS fan will instantly disagree on this and be upset because their precious shiny £425 box has been put to shame.

Oh well I too have one of these shiny black boxes and am only keeping it because well its got some nice hardware and I like people asking me whats better since I have both when I go online and point my camera to it in UNO and when they ask or make fun I just say stick with the 360.

Why do I tell them this? Because firstly there aren't as many canned or delayed games on the Xbox 360 and secondly the Xbox 360 has by far the best visuals in this generation and always will.

I can't tell you if that was stupid... I am not going to pretend I am as experience as him in both hardware to be able to tell if what he is saying is true. I don't know details about both SDK to know if maybe the xbox 360 can handle AI better. Maybe the PS3 hardware can do the same AI but with a lot more efford probably costing them more than their available budget. Or maybe the AI requires a unified full 512MB instead of 2 x 256 like the PS3 has it. Maybe they wrote something specific to the xbox 360 CPU and GPU.... I will not call him stupid... simply because he is working on something that none of us can do... can you make a game like he does? So, if he is stupid... what does that make you?

Also, let's not forget.. that Lair developers will not shut up about their games not being able to run on the xbox 360... and then there it comes BioShock and smacked them in the face with graphics never seing before on any console.

let's see the controls are not intuitive at all, did you see the demonstration. and then there is the lack of realism, how many weapons did he have on his person? (yeah right) then there was the barrel trick, wow he can do magic. instead of taking one of the barrels in front of him, he magically pulled one out of thin air. all the animations looked stiff. I'm glad this is just an early build that they were demoing. all the pause menu-ing that he had to do to just switch weapons or camo needs to be redone. that makes the game flow slow and archaic. They really need to improve on MGS4, i was very disappointed with the demonstration (pretty graphics aside). i saw the demonstration too you know. I saw nothing special about the ai. well the demonstration didn't need to show anything special since the game is about stealth. And they weren't alerted in the demo. So where do you have information on the ai that i don't or are you just talking about how you envision mgs4. Right now it looks like a next gen copy of mgs3. There have been marginal improvements in the concept and flow of the game. pause menu controls. absurd amount of weapons carrying ability, and then you have the magical barrel that was manifested out of thin air. PRETTY GRAPHICS don't make a great game, sorry to break it to you, but they don't. If they don't make some improvements on mgs4 especially in the controls department, then it's just going to be a pretty version of the same old stuff. Polished, rehashed and expelled out.

I haven't played MGS4 obviously, but if you have watched the gameplay video you would see that:

- The AI doesn't see Solid Snake when he is right in front of them because he is "camouflaged"

- The AI sees a barrel rolling towards them, and they just stand there knowing they are gonna get hit.

- They move around in weird patterns, and assume combat positions that don't make sense.

Anyways there are more examples of the AI being HUGELY RETARDED in MGS4... I recently watched the video ON MY PS3.

Just for the record, I believe MGS4 will obviously be the better game and will sell thousands more than SC, but there is really no need to praise its AI when it looks that retarded.

Killzone Two, unparalled physics and Enemy actions happeining in realtime

RFOM, enemies actively flanking and waiting for backup to attack
Rockstar have made no complaints about the Euphoria eingine running on either Hardware

Lucas Arts have made no complaints about there game as well

Even thought Xheads seem not to care for Heavenly Sword, If you kill an enemy, some of the others will lash out, and attack in anger over their fallen comrade,

Ubisofts own game AC (which i will be picking up) had a better showing on Ps3 Hardware than Xbox 360

and the list goes on.

p.s. I was a soldier, and did a tour in Iraq befor an Honorable discharge, If someone is camoflaged well enuff, you won't see them sometimes untill its too late. Not to mention it is still ummm

Who here remembers the early PS2 days remember what they promised the emotion engine could do when it never came close in reality, yet there's so many morons on this site who still believe everything they say. But I think they're right in the way, that the game is optimized (as is Splinter Cell: Conviction) for the 360. Programmed with the 360's strenghts in mind. That way it can be developed more intensive then when they have to look to it on multiplatform/porting base. Thus, they can explore the hardware of one console more, get better results and are not able to get it done on the PS3.

The PS3's strenght is having too much room on the BluRay discs. So now they don't need it for actual gameplay, they'll get an endless amount of useless and overdone cutscenes CGI stuff in between some gameplay. A bit like MGS has always been. 30 secs gameplay 5 minutes movie. Just to 'prove' that BetaBluRay is nescessary.

That's the strength of the PS3. Having CGI cutscenes, playing the movies and have a bit gameplay in between. Where the game itself and the AI/gamplay is worse then the 360 games, because they focus on the games actually here.

How many AAA titles are there on the PS3 yet? Resistance and Motorstorm are just 'good' getting scores in the 8 range.

In the end the better GPU in the 360, going with a great development kit/software will do its job. Outpowering the Cell (great for general streaming purposes but not for gaming) and a late integrated GPU in the PS3 because SOny found out the Cell couldn't do CPU and GPU tasks at the same time. Really. The statement is closer to the truth then you think.

The first part of your comment was fair enough and pretty valid I think but then, oh dear! It must make you feel good doing it so good for you.

I think this game looks really good and not that 'computer generated' The devs have done a good job by the looks of it.

The PS3 devs have had a field day in the past saying the same thing about a game being 'impossible on the 360' and this is the same thing but the other way around. We will never find out if its true or not on exclusives though will we?

Its good to see that they have concentrated on the 360 hardware 'from the gound up' as it is very powerful of course and deserves it much as any other platform.

In reality, you can make any game for any platform in one form or another.

Because of the slightly unusual and unconventional nature of the PS3's parallel architecture and arrangement, there really is no textbook approach for programming methods and much of the strengths in the realm of parallelism are still to be discovered, exploited and optimized. the fact that you think a 360 is a 'upgraded ps2' shows you dont really know anything about the consoles, I would say the PS2s design philosophy has more in common with the PS3s than the 360 in that with the PS2 the Emotion Engine and the Graphics Synthesizer are suppose to both handle the the graphics of the PS2 with the EE (or the CPU) doing the majority of the work.

Originally the PS3 was suppose to be reliant on the power of the CELL processor for it's graphics ontop of the other calculations that's necessary for modern gaming, but the PS3 today as we know it has a RSX GPU with it which probably arose from the fact that the CELL wasn't as powerful as Sony lead people to believe (or the fact that it's very difficult to get it to do anything compared to a modern GPU, which thanks to its PC heritage with 3d hardware accelerators comparably would be far easier to work with) and that it needed a GPU to get the thing to work properly as a GAMING MACHINE.

Basically in the end what has happened is that Sony has been forced to adapt its PS3 to have the RSX do the majority of the graphics work while the CELL handles other functions and its contribution to graphics is minimal. The truth is the CELL while theoretically holding a lot of power is just not as efficient at the role Sony has given it in the PS3 as a x86 or PowerPC CPU.

There are many arguments for which console is more 'powerful', but its obvious that the PS3 is the most inefficient console to work with and it shows in the games and development. The PS3s story is kinda reminiscent to the Sega Saturn's development history imo and what devs ended up with was an incredibly powerful console that was complex as hell and a b!tch to get it running things efficiently. Using the CELL processor for a games machine ultimately was a bad idea and we are paying for it today.

I can't say which platform has better AI since I haven't played very many Xbox 360 titles (except say Gears, Project Gotham, and Perfect Dark) or PS3 titles. All I know is that the AI in Motorstorm, the PS3 game that I have right now, is absolutely awesome. The opponents struggle to get the best racing lines, constantly battle each other (and me), and even hold grudges throughout the match.

Very little graphics memory needed, is what.
They could probably render it as 1080p/60fps and use maybe 64Mb of video RAM, max.
That would leave a *ton* of general purpose memory for, ahem, the environment map. Which, as he *said* is supposed to be enormous and seamless.
In other words, the game is designed to use a *lot* of CPU memory and little GPU memory which the 360's unified memory architecture allows with no need for CPU-cycle draining tricks, the way you'd have to do on a partitioned-memory architecture.
And, of course, since the game is designed to be both RPG *and* fighter, you can't just simply use the HDD as virtual memory without breaking the game into sections.
Odds are, a PC version of the game would need 1Gb of RAM to run well, regardless of the power of the video card.
Having the fastest CPU or GPU on the planet (if you did) would do you no good if the application is memory-starved. And weve all seen the number for the PS3 memory map, right?

You seriously need to take an EE class. It takes 3 steps for Cell or RSX to access each other’s Memory pools, and it’s done so at 15 to 20 GB/s (depending on upstream or downstream). It’s nice that you admitted that they access their respective memory pools much faster than Xenon or Xenos can ; in fact, it’s twice as fast on the PS3.

Xenon (CPU) can access its GDDR3 RAM at 10GB/s.

Cell (CPU) can access RSX’s GDDR3 RAM at 20GB/s, and access its own RAM at 25GB/s.

Factor 5 already talked about this, but the 360 has to copy the exact same information twice into the same pool of memory, which eats up bandwidth. The memory has to be partitioned since its unified, and there’s a lot of wasted cycles due to this hardware decision. The Cell processor on the other hand just chews through all that data, and even stores a lot of information (such as the entire AI system of Heavenly Sword) on SPU local storage; that data doesn’t even touch XDR RAM. PS3 requires less than half the number of memory functions as the 360; all it requires is some extra planning ahead of time. Thankfully, the performance rewards are phenomenal. Just look at Killzone 2, Lair, or Ratchet.

In order for this to be possible developers would need to setup their rendering engine to take advantage of both the EDRAM and the available onboard 3D logic. If anyone is confused why the 32GB/s is being multiplied by 8 its because once data travels over the 32GB/s bus it is able to be processed 8 times by the EDRAM logic to the EDRAM memory at a rate of 256GB/s so for every 32GB/s you send over 256GB/s gets processed. This results in RSX being at a bandwidth disadvantage in comparison to Xenos. Needless to say the 360 not only has an overabundance of video memory bandwidth, but it also has amazing memory saving features. For example to get 720P with 4XFSAA on traditional architecture would require 28MB worth of memory. On the 360 only 16MB is required. There are also features in the 360's Direct3D API where developers are able to fit 2 128x128 textures into the same space required for one, for example. So even with all the memory and all the memory bandwidth, they are still very mindful of how it’s used.

With the capability to fetch from anywhere in memory, perform arbitrary ALU operations and write the results back to memory, in conjunction with the raw floating point performance of the large shader ALU array, the MEMEXPORT facility does have the capability to achieve a wide range of fairly complex and general purpose operations; basically any operation that can be mapped to a wide SIMD array can be fairly efficiently achieved and in comparison to previous graphics pipelines it is achieved in fewer cycles and with lower latencies. For instance, this is probably the first time that general purpose physics calculation would be achievable, with a reasonable degree of success, on a graphics processor and is a big step towards the graphics processor becoming much more like a vector co-processor to the CPU.

here's a tidbit about why the 360 would be better at AI...

The 360 CPU however, due to its 3 symmetric General Purpose Cores, is not only much easier to program for than the cell, but having 3 PPE capable of handling things such as AI also means the 360’s CPU will be the better of the 2 CPUs when it comes to AI code. Either way we can look forward to great things from both CPUs in the future.

Here's the bit about memory useage and advantages...

It’s highly doubtful that Blu-Ray will lead to better graphics because the PS3, due to split memory pools containing 256MB worth of GDDR3 memory and 256MB worth of XDR memory can at best dedicate 256MB worth of ram to textures at any given moment whereas the 360 uses unified memory for a total of 512MB. That alone is a major limiting factor to Blu-Ray’s space advantage.
There are however methods to gain use of more ram as from e-mail exchanges with developers I found out that it’s possible for the PS3’s GPU (RSX) to texture from the XDR, but there is a penalty for texturing from the XDR ram because in order to do so it would need to travel over the cell’s FlexiO , which some developers have actually done. There is also another way of going about doing this which is by copying from the XDR to the GDDR3 memory kind of like a fast cache and just proceed to stream in the content. Even with such methods available, the Xbox 360 just has more memory to work with.

Xbox 360 has 278.4 GB/s of memory system bandwidth. The PS3 has less than one-fifth of Xbox 360's (48 GB/s) of total memory system bandwidth. When you break down the numbers, Xbox 360 has provably more performance than PS3.

The PS3 has 22.4 GB/s of GDDR3 bandwidth and 25.6 GB/s of RDRAM bandwidth for a total system bandwidth of 48 GB/s.

The Xbox 360 has 22.4 GB/s of GDDR3 bandwidth and a 256 GB/s of EDRAM bandwidth for a total of 278.4 GB/s total system bandwidth.

Why does the Xbox 360 have such an extreme amount of bandwidth? Even the simplest calculations show that a large amount of bandwidth is consumed by the frame buffer. For example, with simple color rendering and Z testing at 550 MHz the frame buffer alone requires 52.8 GB/s at 8 pixels per clock. The PS3's memory bandwidth is insufficient to maintain its GPU's peak rendering speed, even without texture and vertex fetches.

The PS3 uses Z and color compression to try to compensate for the lack of memory bandwidth. The problem with Z and color compression is that the compression breaks down quickly when rendering complex next-generation 3D scenes.

HDR, alpha-blending, and anti-aliasing require even more memory bandwidth. This is why Xbox 360 has 256 GB/s bandwidth reserved just for the frame buffer. This allows the Xbox 360 GPU to do Z testing, HDR, and alpha blended color rendering with 4X MSAA at full rate and still have the entire main bus bandwidth of 22.4 GB/s left over for textures and vertices.

...they just don't know how to do it. It's that simple. The AI here is no difficult than the AI in Assassin's Creed (Which is difficult and can be done on PS3), I've seen the vids and watched the collision AI in action it's just like Assassin's Creed in that regard.

SC:C is completely different to the other games in the series, I liked the new form of stealth in Conviction where you have to mix in with the crowd, but once again Assassin's Creed has it already and so does Cipher Complex (PS3/360 game coming soon) in the form of a 'perception filter' rather than a straight-forward 'visibility meter'.

I'll be getting Assassin's Creed this year but to be honest even if Conviction was on PS3 or PC I wouldn't be interested. They can throw insults at the PS3 all day but it doesn't help Conviction's sales figures, they're just going to miss out on the PS3 market next year (Which will be a lot bigger than it is at the moment I expect).

Shame about the AI Ubi, but I wouldn't be buying Conviction even if it was on PS3. I support what they're trying to do by moving the series forward with a different approach but I'd have too many other games to spend my money on anyway.

Those that want to play it on 360, it looks like a nice new spin for the series. Those with a PS3 should get Assassin's Creed or MGS4 for their stealthy fill.

The graphics issue is still up for debate, that is a fact, the 360's chip is more powerful than the Ps3's RSX

But the Cell can asssist with grapics and have 3 more cells to handle share the load in AI processing.

I've said this earlier, and I will say it again. If rockstar, I well reknowned dev, can develop there Key franchise, and put two exclusives on the Ps3 than what is wrong with this picture.

I don't know if anyone else has said this. I didn't feel like wading through all the 360 RULEZ/PS3SUX bullsh1t. Both systems right now are about equal when it comes to graphical power. That's not really saying much considering a year head start. So "the PS3 is "harder" to code for". When 1 system makes you changes discs, while another allows you to play the whole game through without a disc change, which version would you choose? And lastly, FF and MGS are LINEAR games. Changing a disc in a linear game is not so bad. In an open world it means one of two things: 1. disc for specific areas, or 2. artificial boundaries placed in game limiting your ability to "go anywhere, do anything". No developer is going to do 1. It would be suicide. And 2 is not really all that better. It's not directly forcing you to change disc every few minutes, but it is still limiting how far you can go and play. switching discs is so two gens ago.

i have played the bioshock demo ( it took 5 effing hours to download) and it does look really good, and the ai is great, i didnt really care for the game mostly because its a horror shooter but also because the plasmid system was annoying, dont believe me then run into a room with enemys with your plasmid, you'll get slaughtered while your injecting yourself with them, although the plasmid feature is still good, its not innovative, neither is electricuting in water, and burning characters reacting, its just realistic

Why would a developer want to make the PS3 version lesser? It won't benefit them in any way? You think they make them after each other and not at the same time? Are you that stupid? Most developers use two dev teams at once, one for the 360 and one for the PS3. Your imagination is very trippy.

The game is being built for the Xbox 360 in mind. They would have to optimize the game for the PS3 in order to get the same results since both consoles have different hardware.

One more thing, I remember playing Double Agent for the Xbox 360 and there was this one time where I had to sneak into a small room, look through file cabinets and hack into a computer while a woman sat about 3 feet away from me without a care in the world. I'm not trying to say that the 360 is not capable of some sweet artificial intelligence, it was just a funny moment in gaming that I thought of after reading what one of the producers over @ Ubisoft had to say about the PS3.

Do you have a PS3? I'm guessing no. RFOM has easily the most impressive AI I've seen in a console game. I actually just played through Halo 1 and 2 and I have to disagree. I think the Halo did a good job with AI, particularly good given when it came out, but RFOM is just better. It's funny, I noticed how much better the physics were in Halo compared to Gears and the AI was pretty much on par. I found places in both Halo and Gears when you can walk up on the side of an enemy - where you should be in his peripheral vision - and just shoot them in the head. They don't see you, they don't hear you. I've never been able to make that happen in RFOM. Halo did an impressive job with not letting enemies forget you exist, but it's just not on the same level as RFOM - sorry - I just can't agree with you here.

In the anime the villiage is crowded with people and they are lively. They missed one of the most important aspects of the game. What you are seeing is rather simple: true SOFTWARE ENGINEERS will do well on the PS3 if they want to work on it. Just to clarify: Anyone with a pulse can be a programmer. A software engineer on the other hand, has to have ABILITY. These are the same folks that DERIVE algorithms, not copy and reuse them. They CREATE new software technologies, not copy and reuse them. Microsoft has always been good at creating tools that just about anyone can use to write new software, and this has extended to the XBOX 360. Your average programmer will probably survive fine on the 360, I doubt very much that would happen on the PS3. If you don't understand hardware (intimately), the PS3 will probably bite you in the ass. Hence all the complaints about difficult development. I don't doubt it's difficult, but you do get something in return for your effort. As time goes by, the PS3 will come into its own, and all these silly articles about this vs that will be a non issue. By then there should be enough freely and easily accessible info (and code) for all (who desires this) to become good PS3 developers. Which in turn should make silly statements like UBIs, obsolete.

What we do know is that the Cell chip is very one dimensional in the way it needs to be programmed.

#170, It's not that simple. 1 of the cores is used for antivirus and other stuff. That leaves 6 cores. Now when you look at the 360 and it's 6 hardware threads. It's not the same a 6 cores, but it's closer than you think and they are easy to manage. The Cell chip is a good processor, just maybe not for games.

Now my advice for you would be to go on to hardware sites regarding the Cell processor, and you will see it's limitations. Just as the 360 processor has it's limitations. There's more to it than just the number of cores.

AI requires out-of-order instructions - something the PS3 is weak at. The XBOX 360 is better at out-of-order instructions but neither are great - a dual-core intel chip is far superior in that regard. So it is fairly easy to see how the PS3 could not handle the AI - but would kick but when it comes to physics-like caluculations - something the XBOX 360 is not as strong at.

The biggest problem with the PS3 is that it a poor architecture for gaming. If you could actually use the power it would be great - too bad it is never going to happen (well, I am starting to doubt it will ever happen).

No 360 game so far has good AI compared to last generation games. MGS4 is going to have better AI. I refuse to buy any ubisoft game except Haze because they actually give me an incentive that it's timed exclusve for PS3.

proof y the ps3 cant handle complicated games

The PS3’s cell processor has 1 Power PC core similar to that of the 3 Power PC cores sustaining the 360’s 3 core design (without the vmx-128 enhancements available on each of the 360’s cores) and 7 SPE (synergistic processing element). The 8th is disabled to improve yields. One of the SPE is used to run the PS3’s operating system while the other 6 are available for games. The reason the PS3’s CPU will be significantly more difficult to program for is because the CPU is asymmetric, unlike the 360’s CPU. Because of the PS3 CPU only having 1 PPE compared to the 360’s 3, all game control, scripting, AI and other branch intensive code will need to be crammed into two threads which share a very narrow execution core and no instruction window. The cell’s SPE will be unable to help out here as they are not as robust; hence, not fit for accelerating things such as AI, as it’s fairly branch intensive and the SPE lacks branch prediction capability entirely.

I’m sure people remember from the section detailing how the 360 and PS3’s processors are less robust compared to processors we use on our desktop computers and the consequences of being in order execution. Well the PS3’s SPE are further stripped down than even the Power PC Cores and, as a result, isn’t as capable of handling as many different types of code like the 1 Power PC Core available on the PS3’s cell or the 3 Power PC Cores available on the 360’s CPU. The problem with being asymmetric is when you program for the Power PC Core on the PS3 CPU, the method of programming you used to get the most out of that Power PC core is no longer effective when breaking off tasks for the SPE to work on. Going from the PPE to the SPE on the PS3 requires a different compiler and a different set of tools.

When you come to the realization that the key to making up for the CPU is in-order execution is the rather complicated parallel programming, you realize that the CPU being asymmetric and having just a single PPE makes something that was already extremely difficult even more difficult. So a developer’s job is harder when you factor in that the PS3 has a 512KB L2 cache which is half the size of the 360 CPU’s 1MB L2 cache… that single PPE the PS3 CPU has isn’t receiving much help with branches in the cache department.

Microsoft made a better decision from the perspective of the developer; it's still difficult, but much easier compared to working with the Cell architecture. The 360’s CPU isn’t asymmetric like the PS3’s cell and has 3 PPE as opposed to 1, but all 3 are robust enough to help handle the type of code only the PS3’s single PPE is capable of handling. When Microsoft says they have three times the general purpose processing power this is what they mean. Based on the simple fact that the 360 has 3 Power PC cores to the PS3’s 1, more processing power can be dedicated to helping with things such as game control AI, scripting and other types of branch intensive code.

From the perspective of a developer the 360’s CPU’s biggest advantage is that all 3 of the 360’s cores are identical, all run from the same memory pool and they’re synchronized, in addition to being cache coherent. You can just create an extra thread right in your program and have it do some work. This allows the developer to create very nice structures so if you know how to get the best possible performance out of one core you know how to get the best possible performance out of all 3 because they operate in perfect synch.

Each core on the 360’s processor is capable of performing 2 threads each (Think of it as similar to hyper threading), so the 360’s CPU is capable of handling 6 simultaneous running threads at once. This brings me to a very important advantage for the PS3’s Cell CPU, its concurrency. While the 360 CPU may be able to handle 6 processor threads simultaneously it still only has 3 physical CPU cores so every 2 threads must share processing power on a single core. Whereas with the PS3, it has 1 PPE and 6 SPE for games, which are like extra physical processors). If each of the PS3’s 6 SPE used for games are working on a specific task such as collision, cloth physics, animation, water surface simulation or particles, they wouldn’t need to worry about processing power being taken away from another part of the game because the SPE don’t share processing power.

The only cause for concern would be the 512KB L2 cache being shared by 7 simultaneous running SPE and a PPE, but that’s what developers are for; they work around things like this. In practice, this should allow PS3 games to potentially have more things going on at once than 360 games. Ignoring the difficulties of programming for the PS3 CPU, it should be known that the PS3’s CPU is very good when it comes to vertex-related operations because the PS3’s CPU handles graphics code better than the 360’s CPU. It is also possible that through good parallelism of physics code on the SPE that physics code could also run better on the PS3 CPU due to the concurrency advantage.

The 360 CPU however, due to its 3 symmetric General Purpose Cores, is not only much easier to program for than the cell, but having 3 PPE capable of handling things such as AI also means the 360’s CPU will be the better of the 2 CPUs when it comes to AI code. Either way we can look forward to great things from both CPUs in the future.

Before I end off, I’d like to point out a game that in my opinion, from a technical standpoint, is one the most brilliant uses of the PS3’s CPU. All things considered, such as in-order execution and the other complications of the architecture, Heavenly Sword is quite the standout in nearly every regard: incredible combat animations, awesome group enemy AI, and great physics. At the very least this is what I gathered from seeing videos of the E3 demo; it’s a reminder that regardless of the challenges, there are developers that are up to the challenge and its only going to get better with time.

The PS3 has it's share of advantages & it's disadvantages. Having said that, to quote another poster:

"All I know is what Sony promised and all I see is what Sony delivered. The 360 has proven to be the most powerful console, based on the games."

In the end, I favor the 360's architecture: easier to program for, powerful graphics, more memory, better AI, smoother gameplay & framerates, much faster laser, better textures, & most importantly, much more software & at a reasonable price. Not to mention, rumble, achievements, online multiplayer chat, marketplace content, tons of free demos, and of course, XBL.

If someone from Ubisoft say's this, then it must have some merit, as much as the fanboys want to deny it. There is no denying that the 360 is closer to a PC than the PS3, so just maybe, they knew what they where doing. Believe me, I will get a PS3 when I think its worth it, but as of now, it just isn't, and every game that is on both systems, is far superior on the 360.

good point Jason. I have read and heard in podcasts that a few developers have off the record said they are very unhappy that they have to make games on PS3 as well as 360 even though PS3 has no install base. The thing is an absolute pain in the butt for these guys to work with, costs more takes longer but they still have to deal with porting games for fear that one day the PS3 may be a real contender and they don't want to loose its supporters. Imagine if all that energy and cash used to port to the @ss backwards PS3, could be used to make better games for Wii and 360.

Painful news, but as we all know pretty much every game that comes for both consoles (360/PS3) works/looks a bit better in 360. So this A.I. "news" is not surprise at all.

Maybe someday devs learn how to work with PS3.

As the APIs and programming for SPE are becoming more mature more things have been found capable on SPEs that in early development were unsure on not even thought possible. One of these capabilities that were found out later in the development stage to utilize the SPEs of the Cell was AI.

I remember quite clearly that the first admitted weakness was AI and that most technology review sites, who had little programming knowledge at the time for the Cell, doubted. I do remember Sony, IBM, and a few supporters saying there was some unexplored "possibilities"

Now AI is fully realized using the SPEs. Problem is that this is still not widely known to most people including a lot of developers. In a way this is Sony's fault because all this cool stuff is sort of lock up amoung key first/second and a couple of really good third party developers. There is no Fantastic Sony Dev Kit that gives easy access to all Developers - yes, even thoughs who don't have the resources to learn all these Advance Cell processing techniques.

So there you have it. Sony's PS3 can do Physics and AI and can do it just as well if not better than the 360. Problem is they just can't do it very easy.

Eventually Sony will release that dev kit that will make even the really, really, small time software developer smile.

It just might take 2-3 years to see it. Until then only the Big Boys of Game Development will get to partake of the PS3 fruit.
