22% Of 360's Good Titles Are Shooters

Crazed Geek, in response to X3F's aticle where they listed the percentage of shooters in the whole Xbox 360 library, has weeded out the titles not expected to make the high grades all of us gamers go for in a title and have looked at how many shooters are in the library that are expected to get high ratings.

The reviewer took in the elements which make it appeal to the larger audience, gameplay, story, etc. Think Halo, it's obviously going to get high marks, Mass Effect obviously seems on track and Bioshock is already getting 10/10's.

While I agree with you that this is a stupid article and I have reservations in seeing it getting approved (for reasons I'll outline below) I'm going to resist my urge to report it as 'lame'.

Reasons why this article is stupid:

1) See Bladestar's comment, above. How 'good' a game is, is completely subjective.

2) The source of this article leads me to believe that this is nothing more than a blog. Who is 'a crazed geek'? I could just as easily go start a blog of my own, write up an opinion, and post it as an 'article'.

However, I'm going to avoid reporting it as lame because, frankly, I think the original article was *ALMOST* as stupid.

After a bit more research it's blatantly obvious that this is nothing more than a blog - one that was created within the last couple of days, no less, and contains a total of maybe 3 posts! Yeah, I'd say this qualifies as lame.

If everyone thinks the Earth is flat, then the Earth is flat. This is the same basis you must equate when considering the "meta" scores of the game. So, you can't simply dismiss the article because your "personal" tastes are not met. That also doesn't mean your opinion isn't true either.

Now, that doesn't mean I agree with this article. And frankly 17% and 22% doesn't make a big difference. And what percentage of games are shooters shouldn't create an assumption of the system. What matters is what type of games sale on the console. And when it comes to games selling well on the 360 there is one genre that sticks out, and that is the shooter genre.

March 2007:

These numbers are from March 07, but the game list shouldn't be too different. Other then The Darkness and GRAW2 being in the list, but we will exclude them since they won't make a big difference.

4 of the top 5 games are shooters, and 7 of the 10 best selling games are shooters. What does that imply? Simple.. it means the 360 is a shooter console. Now is that a bad thing? NO, it simply means people who own a 360 prefer to play FPS / TPS games over other genres.

This doesn't fit my personal taste so I opted for a different console. But for people who like shooters, the 360 is the best option. As it will always have some of the best FPS / TPS games on any console.

I hope they release Banjo and Kazooi soon, I was hoping to play it. xD

Elder scrolls is a shooter? really? where do you shoot any thing but a magic spell or an bow and arrow? no infact its an FPS RPG!....

Sorry for the mix up, Oblivion obviously isn't a shooter. It is an Action / RPG, however Dead Rising is an Action / TPS and so is, Saints Row. Dead or Alive is a fighting game, not a shooter.. xD

But it still doesn't change the numbers all that much. Remember, as I had stated GRAW2 and The Darkness are not included on this list. So the numbers won't make a big difference. Since they will relatively stay the same.

On having Project Offset up on that list! Looks fantastic! I am envious that the PS3 does not get Two Worlds, it looks like a fun game with hella fun multiplayer.

Anyways either post is a big plus when combating the fanatic myth the Xbox is a shooter console when in reality it lacks or has low amounts of shooters. When looking at lists theres actually more Action adventure games then any other genre I didn't post them because i'v read nothing on them none-the-less i seen about 20 other games that are not shooters.

What's good or not depends on the gamer.

Problems have been resolved with the 7/07 consoles.
Articles have proven it has a wide variety of genres and highly rated games in it, taking away the 'ShooterBox' myth.

PS3:

It's slowly gaining titles, the more the merrier.

Wii:

Same as the PS3 ^^^.
WiiMote is finally being utilised well.

in my opinion 100% of the "good" games are shooters on the 360... thats particularly because i like shooters moreao than any other genre.. Gears, Vegas, Oblivion, and Forza are the Good Games and I guess CoD2.. so 60% of the good games are shooters.. whose to gauge whats good and whats not.. its up to the consumer.. but i agree, i would like to see MORE shooters.. i've worn Resistance FoM thin, can't wait for Halo 3, Haze, CoD4 and UT3.. and I guess bioshock, even with its Role-playing undercurrent is still at it's core a good shooter (i hope a damn good one)... oohh yea, KILLZONE 2 PWNS all!!

are one of the more dominate genres currently. I would have expected the number to be a little higher, but it really depends on what one defines as a good game and what is a shooter.

I thought Dead Rising was a very good game, but really can't figure out how to define it's genre. Is it an action game, action RPG, a third person shooter, etc?

Both Microsoft and Sony ended their E3 shows with shooters. This is the year of the shooter...We love our shooters and we ain't gonna apologize for it either...

That's a good point. If I recall, even Ubisoft at their event ended off with a shooter, be it Splinter Cell or Haze.

Either way, my personal opinion is that first person games (not shooters) do alot more to immerse a player. With today's console technology, that experience is taken farther then other game genres.

Noway, most of good games are shooters according to the general consensus. Look at Gamespot.com and 8.5 and above is a good game. They have 22 games about 8.5. You can't count games that don't have the hype either. 10 out of the 22 are shooters. The games that are not shooters and are hyped by the general consensus are oblivion, forza, GH, PGR, doa, command and conquer. The 360 has 16 hyped games about 8.5. 10 are shooters and 6 are not shooters. The 360 has too many shooters and not enough other games end of discussion!

I'm a 360 fan and all, but Microsoft has a terrible habit of just buying off all the Sony/PS3 games instead of attempting something new. But I won't say anything about a percentage of good 360 titles being FPS, but that a large majority of the 360 games that aren't some type of shooter(or bought off PS title), are complete sh!t.

For example: Kameo, Viva Pinata, Scene It?(are you sh!tting me).
But, with Sony and Nintendo there is always innovation, and some new "genre" I've never played before. Eye of Judgement(Eyetoy too), LBP, Wii itself(this is King), Guitar Hero(singstar now), Microsoft remains very generic.

Generic is cool with me, and to be honest, shooters are the reason I got my 360, I knew a majority of good shooters would be on this console. If I was lookign for an innovative experience I would have a Wii.

360 has a lot of good shooters, oh well.

It's funny how the same rules don't apply if you own a Sony machine. I realize now what the problem is. Instead of making and/or playing games.

Alot of the games on the Xbox/360 arent realy true FPS anyway, most of the good ones give the players cameras that switch between FP and TP. The gameplay features of FP/TP offer a wide range of comfortable gaming and I actualy see more action/classic FPS/TPS hybrid shooters more.

You have Unreal Championship 2 (xbox) that gives you TP/melee and FPS action and so does Shadowrun, Halo, Mass Effect, GRAW, GEARS, Killswitch, Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six, Saints Row, Crackdown and Battlefront. Some get confused about those and a game like Half life, Battlefield, The Darkness and Bioshock, they are true first person because they never leave the FPS perspective.

Now I'm a FP/TP lover but we still need those sleeper,artfull and suprise hits that are just fun to play like Indigo Prophecy, Silent Hill, RE5, Ninja Gaiden, God of War, Full Spectrium Warrior or Evil Dead.

The most recent was the boy was given life for killing his younger brother.

Microsoft needs to cut down or eliminate the shoot-em-up games. This was one of the reasons why i returned to Playstation.
