Aftermath of Good Samaritan murder blamed on video games

According to ABC News, on April 18th in Queens, New York a homeless man bled to death on the sidewalk while numerous pedestrians walked past. Most completely ignored Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax, 31, as he lay unmoving on the ground, bleeding from numerous stab wounds he had endured in the torso at the hands of a would-be mugger. One person rolled him over, saw the blood and kept walking. Someone even stopped to take a picture of Tale-Yax on their mobile phone before continuing on their way."

If you grow up watching violent movies it doesn't mean you're going to leave a man to die on the streets. These people are just too absorbed with themselves to help out another human being.

I'm with darkride66 I've played and watched many violent video games and such, yet I do quite a bit of charitable things and do whatever I can to help if someone is down.

The main problem with society is just being self-absorbed as darkride stated. Not only that, but also finding that personal life goals are much farther ahead than another person's life especially if they are not family or even immediate family.

Sad state, but I guess that is how life is becoming. Though would I go so far as to track them down because they didn't save the man's life? Well who knows, a few I would though especially the person who took the picture that's just low...

Media shouldn't be blaming Video Games, they should be blaming themselves for producing the garbage we see in TV, specially those "Reality" Shows which everybody in it are all for themselves, bashing the living crap outta each other... I remember this being discussed on a forum I usually visit. One of members had stated that it is perhaps the thought of 'Oh, someone else will do it.' going through the minds of those who pass by. As many people as there are in New York this could be a prevalent thing out there [not sure never been]. With multiple people passing by and doing nothing they are all probably thinking one of them will do something.

I do believe the obsession with cheap shallow violent entertainment has a large negative impact on society. We live through the perceptual lenses our culture gives us. This is why the army loans out it's fighter jets and tanks to Hollywood filmmakers. They know people looking for excitement and adventure will see those very things acted out on screen by military men in cool looking vehicles and will want some of that experience, then they will sign up for the army.

The solution is not to ban anything though. The solution is for more creators and producers of art to have the responsibility to help produce some deeper and more educational art.

If you stick a kid in a room with nothing but a DVD of Pulp fiction and a Notorious BIG album for entertainment that kid may grow up with some twisted values. If you stick a kid in a room with a DVD of Pulp fiction, a DVD of Waltz with Bashir, a Notorious BIG album and a Bob Dylan album, he's probably going to grow up with a far better perspective on things and be able to kick back with some fun mindless violent videogames or movies without thinking he's being given brand new and useful guidelines for his personal morality.

Okay, this probably wasn't the place for this kind of rant but to sum it up. It's not getting rid of the shallow violent art that you need to do, it's making sure there's deeper and more thoughtful art there to put the fun stuff in perspective. Sadly, this demands a responsibility and commitment to growth on the part of both the consumer and the producer ... which probably ain't gonna happen.

I had no shortage of violent media thrown at me in the 80's - rewatch RoboCop for a prime example, but it didn't deaden my sense of right and wrong, even if it may have desensitized me to violence. Walking by and not helping someone in need is wrong. Stopping to take a picture of them without offering assistance is wrong.

The problem isn't with violence in culture as much as it is with the "not my problem" attitude that many live by. That has zero to do with the amount of violence a person is exposed to, although I really don't have an explanation as to why this type of mentality is so prevalent in society now.

I have to admit to being somewhat unsympathetic to the plight of a lot of homeless people but I've seen enough homeless to know when someone is in trouble as opposed to simply passed out. I may shake my head and wonder where it all went wrong for someone who reeks of alcohol, snoring away near the side of a building. Someone stabbed in the middle of a sidewalk bleeding from said stab wounds is another matter altogether. I don't think I could live with myself if I just walked by without offering some sort of assistance.

I can think of a far simpler reason that doesn't involve "people are desensitized to violence because of the video games". Maybe they don't want to get killed too?

I play every violent videogame out there, and have been since i was six, and while i'd agree that i am desensitized to violence, it doesn't mean that my morals are fuc%ed. people nowadays have this sense of responsibility, this arrogance that makes them think they're somehow free from the sh!t of life. it's the layer cake status where once people feel like they are at a certain point they're no longer responsible for anyones needs but their own. being desensitized i feel like i would be able to act more accordingly if someone was bleeding out, not walk by like it was some fuc%ing sideshow. in the end, I'd prefer to be desensitized, because i wouldnt want to be the one running screaming in a situation where i could actually put myself to use and help people, or act when the situation called for it.

There was a different situation in Hartford, Conn. where a 78-year-old man was in a hit-and-run accident. People did nothing, one guy stops briefly and then left, and another just circled around the guy and then left.

This has nothing to do with violent video games. It has to do with the "me" attitude in society. It's the mindset of "if it didn't happen to me, it's not my problem."

Rather than the media and such addressing the TRUE problem, they just want to use everything else as scapegoats, whether it's Video Games, Movies, TV, etc. This whole mindset happened YEARS ago before the trend of harping on forms of entertainment.

I agree with you though, this is more a urban big city problem I think. And using movies/games as a scapegoat is not really helping the problem.
